{allcanada} Maple Leafs alumni eager to see if Tavares, Matthews can deliver Cup

TORONTO -- Wendel Clark can see the blue-and-white Auston Matthews and John Tavares banners dangling from the light poles on the streets below his swank penthouse in downtown Toronto.

For the former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, it's yet another example of how the hype surrounding the 2018-19 team has gone off the charts.

"You see it everywhere. It's crazy, isn't it?" Clark said. "But it's a fun crazy. It's a great thing for your city when there is optimism for the hometown team.

"Everyone is walking around happy. We're like psychiatrists because you're taking people's minds away from their other problems. Everybody has it and everyone is pulling in the same direction."

Zeis Leafs Group Shot

The Maple Leafs open the season at home against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; SN, RDS, NHL.TV). The anticipation is frenzied, especially after Toronto won six of eight preseason games. Clark, 51, said he hasn't seen the city this pumped for an NHL season since he, Doug Gilmour and the Maple Leafs went on back-to-back runs in the Stanley Cup Playoffs that featured trips to the conference final in 1993 and 1994.

Patrick Marleau, 39, was still a teenager then and watched the Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada, dreaming of one day playing in the NHL. More than two decades later, he, like Clark, is getting a taste of the hysteria for this season.

For Marleau, a forward who is starting his second season with Toronto after playing the previous 19 with the San Jose Sharks, he is embracing every moment.

"I'll be going to pick up the kids at school, and the parking attendants who move the car along will always stop me and want to talk Leafs," Marleau said. "I see them every day. They're great guys. I love talking to them."

The daily message to Marleau is always the same: This could be the season the Maple Leafs, who haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1967, end the drought.

"I hear the same thing everywhere around town," Marleau said. "Everybody's really pumped up about this year. It would be hard not to be.

"We have a great group of players who are really skilled. Now it's up to us."

Zeis Matthews banner

There are plenty of reasons for such optimism.

The Maple Leafs set team records for points (105), wins (49) and home wins (28) last season. The signing of Tavares to a seven-year, $77 million contract as an unrestricted free agent on July 1 served to boost hopes even more after the promise of last season, which ended with a seven-game elimination against the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference First Round.

"There are a lot of positive vibes coming right now from the fans," Clark said. "They're all excited because of last season, because of making the playoffs for two consecutive years, because of [Tavares], because of the success in the exhibition season … yeah, it's only exhibition season, but winning is fun. As a fan, this is fun."

Tavares, 28, and Matthews, 21, are the Maple Leafs top two forwards and have become the unofficial faces of the franchise. Matthews, the No. 1 pick at the 2016 NHL Draft, is featured on the tickets for the season opener. He appeared in a fashion shoot in an edition of GQ magazine that was published last week.

Zeis Tavares banner

But as popular as Matthews is, Clark said Maple Leafs fever escalated when Tavares, the No. 1 pick in 2009 by the New York Islanders, elected to go home and play for Toronto.

"He knows all the teams in the League better than I do as a fan," Clark said. "And he thinks that, 'Oh, in this window for [the] next five years, this might be the best place for me to win.'

"As a fan, that's what has me encouraged. Players don't decide not to come to Canada because of the pressure; players come to a market because they think they can win there."

The Maple Leafs haven't experienced much success over the past half century. Since the Cup championship in 1967, they have reached the final four of the playoffs four times and failed to reach the Cup Final each time: 1993 (lost to the Los Angeles Kings), 1994 (lost to the Vancouver Canucks), 1999 (lost to the Buffalo Sabres) and 2002 (lost to the Carolina Hurricanes).

Former Maple Leafs goaltender Curtis Joseph thought they were ready to go to the next level during his time with Toronto from 1998-2002. Twice he helped them reach the Eastern Conference Final (1999, 2002); twice they fell short.

Zeis tickets

"The buzz around town right now about the Leafs is awesome," Joseph, 51, said. "I wish I would have appreciated it more when I played. When you're living in the moment, you're kind of sheltered. … I was too focused and engaged in my surroundings. It was just home and work.

"Now that I'm out of it, I see the signing of John Tavares and just all the hype and the expectations, and it's amazing. It's such a great, great place to play. I wish I would have stepped out of my box and looked around a little bit. I don't know if I would have played at my level; I'm sure I could have, but as a fan now it's so exciting. I want to play now. It makes me want to play.

"The fans' excitement is intoxicating."

{allcanada} Hellebuyck preseason favorite for Vezina Trophy

Connor Hellebuyck is on a mission this season.

Not only is the Winnipeg Jets goaltender out to prove that his accomplishments last season weren't a fluke, but he's armed with the task of being the last line of defense on a team that is expected to play well into the spring.

"My goal is to prove, and I've always believed in myself, that I have the right people around me," said Hellebuyck, who signed a six-year, $37 million contract with the Jets on July 12. "I have the right agent and the right organization and the right trainer and the right goalie coaches to help me succeed. Anytime something falters, we know exactly what to fall back on."

Hellebuyck won 44 games last season, which tied with Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning for most in the NHL and set a record by a United States-born goalie in a single season (Tom Barrasso won 43 with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992-93). Hellebuyck also tied the NHL record for home wins in a season (30), set by Wayne Stephenson of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1975-76.

Hellebuyck's play helped the Jets (52-20-10) finish second in the Central Division and reach the Western Conference Final, where they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. Hellebuyck, who had a 2.36 goals-against average, a .924 save percentage and six shutouts, finished second in the Vezina Trophy voting behind Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators.

Those are the biggest reasons why Hellebuyck was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender, according to a panel of 18 NHL.com writers.

"[Hellebuyck] has always been projected in our mind as a number one goaltender and the goaltender of the future for us," Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said. "We're very excited we were able to come to a long-term agreement for now and the future."

Hellebuyck received five first-place votes and edged Vasilevskiy (seven first-place votes) by two points in the poll. Martin Jones of the San Jose Sharks (two first-place votes) finished third.

"I expect the most out of myself and I want everyone to expect the most out of me because I want to bring my A-plus game every single night," Hellebuyck said. "If it's not A-plus, (hopefully) it's good enough to win. That's the key for this team, everyone wanting to do more."

Voting totals (points awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis): Connor Hellebuyck, Jets, 55 points (five first-place votes); Andrei Vasilevskiy, Lightning, 53 points (seven first-place votes); Martin Jones, Sharks, 30 points (two first-place votes); Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets, 28 points (three first-place votes); Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals, 18 points; Marc-Andre Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights, 17 points; Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings, 14 points (one first-place vote); Matt Murray, Penguins, 14 points; Tuukka Rask, Boston Bruins, 13 points; Frederik Andersen, Toronto Maple Leafs, 12 points; Pekka Rinne, Predators, 11 points; John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks, 2 points; Roberto Luongo, Florida Panthers, 2 points; Antti Raanta, Arizona Coyotes; 1 point

{allcanada} 18 storylines to watch entering 2018-19 season

The 2018-19 NHL season begins with four games Wednesday, including a banner-raising ceremony in Washington and the debuts of a few star players who changed addresses during the offseason.

Here are 18 storylines that will play out throughout the 2018-19 season.

1. Four more rounds in Washington

The Washington Capitals won their first Stanley Cup championship last season, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. Along the way they got past the Pittsburgh Penguins, who had won the previous two titles. Washington returns 18 of the 20 players who dressed in their Game 5 victory. The big change is behind the bench, where coach Todd Reirden replaces Barry Trotz, who now is coaching the New York Islanders.

2. Window in Vegas wide open

There's only one way for the Golden Knights to top their historic inaugural season, and that's to win the Stanley Cup. It's not farfetched to think they can. A year ago the Golden Knights were brand new and expectations were low. Then they finished first in the Pacific Division with 109 points and defeated the Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks and Winnipeg Jets in the playoffs. Vegas is primed for another run this season, especially with the additions of center Paul Stastny and left wing Max Pacioretty.

3. Tavares' return to his roots

If they were holding a parade in Toronto before the season, center John Tavares would be the homecoming king. He's the local boy who slept on Toronto Maple Leafs sheets and grew up being inspired by his hometown team, who spurned offers from other teams, including the Islanders, to sign a seven-year, $77 million contract with the Maple Leafs. Tavares, though, signed with the Maple Leafs to help bring a parade to the city after the season. His homecoming will be judged on that.

4. Karlsson goes west

The new chapter in defenseman Erik Karlsson's award-winning career begins Wednesday, when his new team, the Sharks, host the Anaheim Ducks at SAP Center (10:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, NHL.TV). The two-time Norris Trophy winner was traded from the Ottawa Senators, where he had played since 2009-10 and was captain since 2014-15, to San Jose on Sept. 13. Karlsson, 28, is in the final season of his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

5. Kovalchuk goes Hollywood

Los Angeles Kings left wing Ilya Kovalchuk's first NHL game in more than five years will be against Karlsson and the Sharks at Staples Center on Friday (10:30 p.m. ET; SN360, FS-W, NBCSCA, NHL.TV). Kovalchuk, 35, signed a three-year, $18.75 million contract with the Kings on July 1 after playing for SKA St. Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League the previous five seasons. He has 816 points (417 goals, 319 assists) in 816 NHL games. Will he be the same player he was when he left the NHL five years ago?

6. Trotz, Lamoriello take on New York

Lou Lamoriello, the three-time Stanley Cup winning general manager, has taken on a new challenge as Islanders GM and president of hockey operations. Lamoriello, who was the GM in charge of restoring the Maple Leafs to respectability the previous three seasons, hired Trotz as coach. Tavares is gone, and the Islanders are starting over with two veteran winners in charge.

7. Oilers looking for rebound

Connor McDavid led the NHL with 108 points (41 goals, 67 assists) last season and the Edmonton Oilers still missed the playoffs by 17 points. Edmonton was 31st on the power play at 14.8 percent last season despite having McDavid. Edmonton's captain is expected to do his part again, but the Oilers must revamp their special teams (their penalty kill was 25th at 76.7 percent), and goalie Cam Talbot has to bounce back (31-31-3, .908 save percentage, 3.02 goals-against average, 67 games) if they're going to be a playoff contender.

8. Chicago's primary concern

Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford still is trying to come back from a concussion that kept him out for the final 47 games last season. He isn't expected to be ready for the Blackhawks' opener against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Center on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET; TSN5, RDS, WGN, NHL.TV). Cam Ward and Anton Forsberg are the backups, but neither has impressed enough in training camp to warrant optimism if Crawford misses a chunk of time.

9. Dahlin's debut in Buffalo

All eyes will be on rookie defenseman Rasmus Dahlin when the Buffalo Sabres open their season against the Boston Bruins at KeyBank Center on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; MSG-B, NESN, NHL.TV). Dahlin, the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, has a chance to be the best defenseman in Sabres history, at least since Phil Housley, who is his coach, played for Buffalo from 1982-90.

10. Svechnikov's arrival in Raleigh

Carolina Hurricanes fans are champing at the bit to find out what they have in rookie forward Andrei Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft. Svechnikov arguably is the most exciting Hurricanes prospect since the arrival of Eric Staal 15 years ago as the No. 2 pick in the 2003 NHL Draft.

11. Other rookies to watch

If Dahlin or Svechnikov aren't going to win the Calder Trophy, Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson might be the best bet. Pettersson, the No. 5 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, has had a strong preseason and could make Canucks fans quickly get over the absences of the retired Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin. Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen also could make a strong case for the award, as could New York Rangers center Filip Chytil, Detroit Red Wings forward Filip Zadina and Senators forward Brady Tkachuk.

12. College coaches graduate to NHL

Jim Montgomery is coach of the Dallas Stars after spending the past five seasons at the University of Denver, where he led them to the 2017 NCAA championship. David Quinn is the Rangers coach after spending the past five seasons at Boston University. The Philadelphia Flyers' Dave Hakstol (University of North Dakota) is the last coach to make the jump from college to the NHL. He did it in 2015 and made the playoffs in his first season.

13. Fluke or for real?

The Colorado Avalanche made the playoffs last season with 95 points after finishing last in the League in 2016-17 with 48 points. The New Jersey Devils made it last season with 97 points after finishing last in the Eastern Conference with 70 points in 2016-17. Neither won a round, nor did they make massive changes during the offseason. Yet expectations are higher this season for each team. Will they be met? Or will either team regress?

14. Canadiens banking on Price

Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price, 31, is in the first season of an eight-year contract. He went 16-26-7 with a .900 save percentage and 3.11 goals-against average in 49 games last season, and the Canadiens finished 26 points out of a playoff spot. Blame for the failures last season can be laid throughout the organization, including with Price, who must revert to his old form if the Canadiens want to be a postseason contender this season.

15. Futures of 'Bread Man' and 'Bob'

The Columbus Blue Jackets need their No. 1 goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky, and their best forward, Artemi Panarin, their leading scorer last season with 82 points (27 goals, 55 assists), to have big seasons if they want to reach the playoffs for a third straight season. It's not clear if Bobrovsky and Panarin will play the full season in Columbus. Both are on the last year of their respective contracts and each can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. The Blue Jackets want to re-sign each of them, but if they determine that they can't, it's possible one or both could be traded.

16. Ottawa's answer

Karlsson is gone and external expectations for the Senators have dipped to the point where it's hard to remember they were an overtime goal away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2016. The Senators, though, are trying to remain hopeful. Matt Duchene is in the final season of a five-year contract and Mark Stone signed a one-year contract Aug. 3. Both forwards can become unrestricted free agents after the season. Signs of a bright future could convince them to want to re-sign. Defenseman Thomas Chabot, 21, showed promise last season with 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) in 63 games. He should get more ice time and a chance to grow. Tkachuk also is a player to watch.

17. Hughes Watch

Jack Hughes, the 17-year-old center with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program under-18 team, is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Last season he had 116 points (40 goals, 76 assists) in 60 games with the NTDP U-17 and U-18 NTDP teams last season. He was one point away from tying Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews' single-season program record of 117 points in 2014-15. Hughes will be the big prize for one team in June.

18. Seattle Watch

The biggest news story this season could involve Seattle. The NHL Board of Governors will meet Tuesday, and the executive committee will hear a presentation from the ownership group trying to bring a team to the Pacific Northwest. Approval has been granted for a $700 million renovation of KeyArena. The next step is for the BOG to vote on granting an expansion team to Seattle.

{allcanada} Oct. 1: Gretzky's No. 99 retired by Oilers

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Oct. 1

1999: The Edmonton Oilers raise Wayne Gretzky's No. 99 to the rafters at Skyreach Centre before their season-opening 1-1 tie against the New York Rangers.

Gretzky gets a five-minute standing ovation from a crowd of more than 17,000 that includes his family and many former teammates. He's hugged by former coach Glen Sather and given a portrait by longtime Oilers teammates Mark Messier, Jari Kurri and Dave Semenko.

Gretzky says he accepted his retirement decision the moment he announced it in the final week of the 1998-99 season; he played his final NHL game on April 18, 1999, with the Rangers.

"The fact I can't do it, it kills me," he says of continuing to play, "but I've got peace of mind because it was time to move on.

"When I saw that banner go up, there was no turning back."

MORE MOMENTS

1960: Rangers forward Andy Hebenton scores the first shorthanded, game-winning goal in the history of the NHL All-Star Game. The goal gives the All-Stars a 2-1 victory against the Stanley Cup-champion Montreal Canadiens. It's Hebenton's only All-Star Game appearance.

1981: The New York Islanders trade defenseman Bob Lorimer and forward Dave Cameron to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for a first-round choice in the 1983 NHL Draft. The Islanders use the pick (No. 3) to select future Hall of Fame center Pat LaFontaine.

1991: The Pittsburgh Penguins name Scotty Bowman coach. Bowman steps in for Bob Johnson, who is ill and dies on Nov. 26. Bowman goes on to lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup for the second straight season.

1997: Lindy Ruff is a winner in his NHL coaching debut when the Buffalo Sabres defeat the St. Louis Blues 3-1.

1999: Daniel Alfredsson is named captain of the Ottawa Senators, a position he holds until signing as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings on July 5, 2013.

{allcanada} Hasselborg, Gushue win Elite 10 Grand Slam

CHATHAM, Ont. — Brad Gushue of St. John's, N.L., has picked up his second Elite 10 title with a win over Winnipeg's Reid Carruthers in the men's final to open the Grand Slam of Curling season on Sunday.

Gushue picked up his 11th Grand Slam of Curling championship by holding off Carruthers for a 1-up victory at a soldout Thames Campus Arena.

"I didn't know what to expect seeing as how (third Mark Nichols) and I only got on the ice last Sunday," said Gushue

"We had low expectations, but to come out here and win against teams that have played two, three or four times, it's good but a little bit of luck. We had some fortunate misses against us and also made some key shots too."

Earlier Sunday, Olympic champion Anna Hasselborg of Sweden defeated Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni to win the inaugural Elite 10 women's championship.

"This has been a goal for us since we came into the Slam series", said Hasselborg.

"To (win) this early in the season really proves that we are on the right track. I'm just so happy with how the team performed today. We played the best game so far."

Hasselborg won 4-and-2 to claim her first Grand Slam title and first for a Swedish women's team.

Hasselborg's rink was undefeated through the tournament, going 6-0 en route to the championship. She beat Rachel Homan of Ottawa in Saturday's semifinal to earn her spot in Sunday's match.

Tirinzoni had knocked off Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg in her semi.

Originally a men's invitational, the Grand Slam series added a women's division to the Elite 10 this season.

The tournament uses a unique format.

Points are scored in match play by either counting two or more rocks (with the hammer) or stealing at least one rock (without the hammer).

Teams earned three points for a regulation win, two points for a shootout win and one point for a shootout loss. The top six teams overall, regardless of pools, qualified for the weekend playoffs.

The Elite 10 has three additional unique rules: Stopwatches are banned, tick shots cannot be performed on guards sitting on the centre line until the fifth rock of play and teams have four minutes of thinking time per end.

{allcanada} Manziel throws first two CFL TDs in Alouettes' loss to Roughriders

MONTREAL — Johnny Manziel finally got his first CFL touchdown, but the quarterback wants to start winning football games.

Manziel threw two touchdowns in a losing effort as the surging Saskatchewan Roughriders beat the Montreal Alouettes 34-29 on Sunday afternoon.

"If we would have come out here and gotten a win, and there were zero touchdown passes on the board, I would be sitting here happier than I am right now," said Manziel, who's still looking for his first victory of the season. "But I got the monkey off my back."

Manziel completed 9 of 16 passes for 138 yards. The former Heisman Trophy winner added 45 yards on the ground. He was sacked five times.

The Alouettes starting quarterback found the end zone for the first time this season on one of Montreal's nicest plays of the year.

On a carefully executed trick play early in the second quarter, Manziel handed the ball off to running back William Stanback, who reversed it to receiver B.J. Cunningham with another handoff. Cunningham flicked the ball back to Manziel, who went deep for the 47-yard score to a wide-open Adarius Bowman.

"I'm not going to lie, I didn't have 100 per cent faith in it because it didn't really work in practice," said Bowman. "But coach said it would and he said it was up this week. It was nice for the team to execute it and get it done."

The touchdown put the Alouettes ahead 14-13 in Manziel's fourth CFL start.

"We had been trying to call it since the first play of the game," said Manziel, the former first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns. "I was just trying to get B.J. to get me the ball as quick as possible because I could see what was happening down the field."

In the fourth quarter, Manziel threw his second touchdown of the game when he found Ernest Jackson in the end zone for the 20-yard score to make it 31-29. Montreal almost tied the game with a two-point conversion but Manziel was stopped on the one-yard line.

That's as close as the Alouettes would get, as Saskatchewan's Brett Lauther kicked a 23-yard-field goal with 4:14 left in the game.

Montreal has lost three games in a row and dropped to 3-11-0 on the season.

"If you ask me what's most frustrating, it's our inability to win here in this stadium in front of our home crowd," said coach Mike Sherman. "It saddens me that we can't let them go home with a win in their pockets. We're competitive but we're not winning games."

Zach Collaros went 29 for 41 for 394 yards, a touchdown and an interception as Saskatchewan (9-5-0) won for the sixth time in seven games.

The Roughriders had 506 yards of total offence to Montreal's 187.

"They were very opportunistic," said Riders coach Chris Jones. "We unfortunately made errors that resulted in points for them which made the game remain close. The offensive line did a pretty nice job after they settled in and our running backs and our receiving core had positive games."

Montreal opened the scoring 6:51 into the game with an Antonio Pipkin QB sneak to take a 7-0 lead.

The Roughriders tied the game three minutes later on a 27-yard touchdown by Tre Mason, his first of the season.

Saskatchewan went up 13-7 on a 23-yard pass from Collaros to Kyran Moore in the dying seconds of the second quarter.

Manziel's TD and a Boris Bede field goal gave the Alouettes a 17-13 lead.

Nick Marshall punched the ball into the end zone from one yard out late in the first half and the Riders added a two-point conversion.

Saskatchewan went up 24-17 on a Lauther field goal.

Marshall scored another one-yard touchdown at 4:30 of the third quarter to put the visitors up 31-17.

Stefan Logan cut the deficit to 31-23 on a 74-yard punt return at 14:21 of the third quarter. He became the Alouettes' all-time franchise leader for punt return yards.

"I saw progress today in a lot of areas for us," said Manziel. "It's tough to keep coming up short like this. Nobody likes sitting here with the record that we have and the position that we're in. But I'm not discouraged and I don't see any discouragement throughout the locker room."

{allcanada} Alouettes' Manziel throws first CFL touchdown pass in fourth career start

MONTREAL — Johnny Manziel has his first CFL touchdown pass.

The former Heisman Trophy winner and Alouettes starting quarterback found the end zone with a TD strike to slotback Adarius Bowman early in the second quarter of Montreal's home game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday afternoon.

The touchdown put the Alouettes ahead 14-13 in Manziel's fourth start in the CFL.

On a carefully executed trick play, Manziel handed the ball off to running back William Stanback, who reversed it to receiver B.J. Cunningham with another handoff. Cunningham flicked the ball back to Manziel, who went deep for the 47-yard score to a wide-open Bowman.

Manziel, who was acquired by Montreal from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats earlier this season, came into the game 45 for 71 passing for 484 yards and five interceptions.

The 25-year-old is still looking for his first victory of the season.

{allcanada} TFC rallies to beat Revs, keep playoff hopes alive

Toronto FC turned back the clock Saturday night, providing a reminder of how good they can be.

Toronto scored four unanswered goals to keep its slender playoff hopes alive with a 4-1 win over the New England Revolution. It may be too little too late but, like a good wedding photo, served as a pleasant reminder of past good celebrations.

"I'd be lying if I said that it didn't cross my mind how is this team not in the playoffs picture right now," said coach Greg Vanney.

"It for sure went through my mind ... What I'm happy about is the group tonight, they put their foot on the gas and they never took it off once we really got rolling. That was a good sign. It looked like they were having fun again in a season that obviously has been challenging in many ways."

"For me it was a lot of the team that we saw last year ... It was nice to see that again," added Vanney.

Toronto — which won the MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield and Canadian championship last year — came into the game knowing that a loss or tie coupled with a Montreal win would end its post-season chances.

D.C. United did its bit, thumping the Impact 5-0 to keep Toronto mathematically in the hunt. With four games remaining — including one at Montreal, which currently occupies the sixth and last playoff berth in the East — TFC is seven points out of the post-season.

New England was poor on the night while Toronto — at least in the second half — showed signs of the team that rolled through the league last year.

Sebastian Giovinco, Lucas Jansson, Victor Vazquez and Marky Delgado scored for Toronto (9-15-6) before 24,710 at BMO Field on Canadian Forces Appreciation Night.

Cristian Penilla replied for New England (8-11-11), which was second-best in the second half.

It marked the first time this season in league play that Toronto has won after conceding the first goal (1-14-1).

Tied 1-1 at the break, Toronto thought it had gone ahead on a Jonathan Osorio goal in the 48th minute. But, much to TFC's disgust, it was called off for an Osorio foul in the buildup to the play.

Jansson gave Toronto the lead in the 53rd minute, taking a nifty flick from Giovinco, who was lively all night, and then knocking his own rebound in off a defender. Vazquez then scored from the penalty spot in the 58th minute — his eighth of the season — after Jalil Anibaba brought down Bradley in the box.

Delgado put the cherry on the cake in the 81st minute, heading in his first of the season after a Brad Knighton save came right to him.

Ninth-place Toronto remains under the gun. Even if it wins its remaining games, it can finish no higher than 45 points. In that scenario, Montreal can finish with as many as 46. Seventh-place D.C. United could be the wild card, given it has a game in hand and could reach 50 points.

TFC hosts Vancouver next Saturday before playing at D.C. United and Montreal and then wrapping up the regular season against Atlanta.

Bradley, who allowed himself a smile on the pitch after the final whistle, liked the performance but was not about to pop champagne.

"It's one game, a good game for sure. But we're not going to make any sweeping conclusions based on one game," he said. "We have a good team, we know that. We've let ourselves down on a few too many days this year. We've also been let down by a lot of things this year.

"So it's not the time to talk about that kind of stuff. We're going to continue to fight, we're going to continue to play, we're going to continue to try to take care of our business. We still have direct games with D.C. and Montreal. Until someone says the math no longer checks out, we're going to keep trying to play and put wins together and we'll see where that takes us."

TFC had lost three of its last four league outings (1-3-0) and won just four of its last 16 (4-8-4)

Eighth-place New England remains five points out of the playoffs with four games left. The Revolution arrived unbeaten in their last four (1-0-3), a stretch that followed an eight-game winless streak (0-6-2).

Toronto rolled out a strong lineup, arguably its top selection other than the injured Drew Moor. But striker Jozy Altidore, who left last weekend's 2-0 loss at the New York Red Bulls early in the second half, lasted just 16 minutes before limping off with a recurrence of an ankle injury.

Penilla put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute after Andrew Farrell found Luis Caicedo behind the defence. Gregory van der Wiel failed to clear Caicedo's attempted cross in the box and the ball eventually bounced back to Penilla, who banged it home for his 11th of the season.

At first glance, Caicedo looked offside but replays show Bradley, who started at centre back again, playing him onside.

Giovinco tied it up in the 36th minute after a New England giveaway in midfield. Vazquez found a streaking Giovinco and the Italian, after managing to stay onside, buried a shot high in the corner of the goal for his 12th of the season.

{allcanada} Ibrahimovic scores two in win over Whitecaps

CARSON, Calif. — Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in each half in the Los Angeles Galaxy's 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.

The Swedish star opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the fourth minute, finishing into the lower left corner. Romain Alessandrini drew the foul against Marcel de Jong.

The Galaxy (12-11-8) made it 2-0 in the 58th minute when Ibrahimovic drove in from 40 yards out, faked out defender Aly Ghazal and sent home a right-footed blast from the top of the box. It was Ibrahimovic's 20th goal of the season.

Alessandrini converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute to cap the scoring for LA.

The Whitecaps (11-12-7) dropped their third in a row.

{allcanada} DC United blast Impact to close playoff gap

WASHINGTON — In the biggest game of the season, the Montreal Impact faltered badly in the second half.

Luciano Acosta had a goal and three assists, Wayne Rooney and Paul Arriola each scored two second-half goals, and D.C. United beat the Impact 5-0 on Saturday night.

United (10-11-8) closed within two points of the Impact (12-15-4) for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. D.C. has two games in hand.

"In the first half, I wasn't under the impression that we would play such a horrible second. There are certain behaviours we need to correct," said Impact coach Remi Garde. "These are important games in which we need all 11 players on the field to be at their best physically, mentally, and in their aggressiveness. Today, we were outclassed by our opponent in these categories."

Acosta turned on Yamil Asad's lead pass with a right-footed shot to open the scoring in the 17th minute.

Rooney swerved past Acosta's cross, created an opening with his first touch and slotted it back inside the left post to make it 2-0 in the 48th.

United made it 3-0 in the 61st when Rooney found Acosta open on the left side of the area and Acosta sent a pinpoint pass to Arriola for the tap-in. Arriola chipped home Acosta's pass in the 78th and Rooney caught the goalkeeper out of the net in the 82nd.

Bill Hamid had five saves for his second shutout of the season.

"When we look back on the season, this will be the moment that we decided if we stepped up or we crumbled," said Impact striker Quincy Amarikwa. "I'm confident of the quality we have in the locker room, and we're going to use this as motivation to move forward into the playoffs."
