{allcanada} Canada’s Andreescu gets top seed, first-round bye for Grampians Trophy

MELBOURNE, Australia — Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu is the top seed for her first tournament in 15 months.

Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ont., received the top seed Monday for the Grampians Trophy, which starts Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Andreescu, ranked eighth in the world, will get a first-round bye and will face the winner of a match between fellow Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez and American Sloane Stephens in the second round.

The Australian Open tune-up is for players coming out of hard quarantine following COVID-19 exposure on charter flights to Australia.

Andreescu, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, hasn't played a competitive match since suffering a left knee injury at the WTA Finals in October 2019.

{allcanada} McDavid, Draisaitl pile up points, Oilers beat Senators 8-5

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Connor McDavid had a goal and four assists, linemate Leon Draisaitl had six assists and the Edmonton Oilers outscored the Ottawa Senators 8-5 on Sunday night.

McDavid moved into a tie for the league goals lead at eight with Vancouver's Brock Boeser and leads the points race with 22, one ahead of Draisaitl.

Draisaitl was an assist off the team record held by Wayne Gretzky and Billy Taylor. The German leads the NHL in assists with 15, one more that McDavid.

Dominic Kahun, James Neal, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Tyson Barrie and Darnell Nurse and Kailer Yamamoto also scored, and Stuart Skinner made 33 saves in his NHL debut.

The teams will complete the two-game set in Edmonton on Tuesday night.

It took eight seconds for the Oilers to score. Off a faceoff win by Draisaitl in the Senators' zone, Kahun took the pass from his center and fired a shot towards the net. The puck deflected off Ottawa forward Josh Norris' stick and went past Matt Murray into the goal.

McDavid scored on a power play 42 seconds into the second period.

Colin White, Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzle and Austin Watson scored for Ottawa.

Murray allowed three goals on nine shots before being pulled in the first period. Marcus Hogberg stopped 17 of 22 shots the rest of the way.

Because of events, mostly due to folk's habits changing over time, I will now start to rationalise the membership and for those that are obviously, not involved any more, I will be closing down the account. {allcanada} Jets' Dubois stuck in quarantine as federal government mulls exception

A week after flying to his new team's home city, Pierre-Luc Dubois is still sitting in a hotel room.

The newest Winnipeg Jets' centre arrived in Canada on Jan. 23 after the Jets and Blue Jackets completed a blockbuster trade that sent Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic to Columbus. But as Chris Johnston explained during Hockey Night in Canada's Headlines segment on Saturday, Dubois and the Jets are still waiting to find out when his quarantine can end.

"The Manitoba government is comfortable with Pierre-Luc Dubois being granted what was called a 'working quarantine' for players during training camp, which would allow him to skate in this upcoming week," Johnston said. "But the federal government has yet to weigh in on that matter."

The standard quarantine period for people entering Canada is 14 days. Last week, Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said that Winnipeg had requested to get that period reduced to seven days.

"It makes a big difference on his availability," Johnston said. "Obviously, if he can get on the ice this week, it would set him up to start about a week from now. If he doesn't skate in that time, well, the timeline gets pushed back."

The week of Feb. 7-13, which is presumably Dubios's first week of potential game action for Winnipeg, features three games on the Jets' schedule: at Calgary (Feb. 9), vs. Ottawa (Feb. 11) and vs. Ottawa (Feb. 13).

{allcanada} Connor McDavid lifts Oilers past Maple Leafs, 4-3 in OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Connor McDavid scored his second goal of the night 42 seconds into overtime to give the Edmonton Oilers a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

In overtime, McDavid redirected a pass from Leon Draisaitl off the rush for his seventh goal of the season. McDavid also had an assist.

"Every game against Toronto's been a real competitive game," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. "It's a bounce here or there or a save here or there or capitalizing on a chance here or there."

Dominik Kahun and Josh Archibald also scored, and Mikko Koskinen stopped 26 shots to help Edmonton improve to 4-6-0. Draisaitl and Tyson Barrie each added two assists.

Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Zach Hyman scored for Toronto, John Tavares had two assists, and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves. The Maple Leafs dropped to 7-2-1. They had won four in a row.

"It was a pretty positive road trip, taking three out of four, playing some good teams," said Matthews, who scored in his fifth straight game. "When you're playing the same team back-to-back twice in a row it's hard to win twice."

McDavid scored on a jaw-dropping individual effort in regulation.

McDavid collected the puck in Edmonton's end on a power play with his team up 2-1 in the second period, sliced through the neutral zone and stepped around defenseman Jake Muzzin as if he wasn't even there.

The center then went from his backhand to his forehand on Andersen in the blink of an eye to bury his sixth of the campaign.

"That's just what he does," said Barrie, the defenseman who assisted on both of McDavid's goals. "He's been doing it since he came into the league. Just an incredible play from an incredible player."

The superstar from Newmarket, Ontario, seems to save his best for the Leafs.

"What impresses you the most about Connor when he does that is the speed he carries the puck," Tippett said. "There's a lot of fast players, but to do it carrying the puck and having control of the puck, that's what makes it so dangerous. He's as fast or faster than anybody in the league.

"I would dare to say he's the fastest guy by a wide margin carrying the puck. It's hard to defend."

{allcanada} Canada's Gagnon 3rd in World Cup super-G

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany — Canada's Marie-Michele Gagnon stood on alpine skiing's World Cup podium for the first time in nearly five years with a bronze medal, while Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami won her third straight super-G Saturday.

A week after winning her home race in Crans-Montana, Gut-Behrami edged runner-up Kajsa Vickhoff Lie of Norway by just under seven-tenths of a second.

Gagnon was .93 back of Gut-Behrami for her first medal in a speed discipline.

Gagnon won a pair of alpine combined events and twice finished third in slalom during her career, but the 31-year-old from Lac-Etchemin, Que., shifted to racing downhill and super-G in 2017.

Starting 29th, the Canadian knocked Italy's Soffia Goggia, holding down third spot, off the podium

"I was very surprised, but I had a good feeling all day," Gagnon said. "The snow conditions allowed for a good result from the back and I could attack the whole course."

Gagnon's last World Cup podium was a super-combined victory in Soldeu, Andorra in February 2016.

Gut-Behrami claimed her 29th career victory and 15th in super-G. Only Lindsey Vonn (28), Renate Götschl (17) and Katja Seizinger (16) have won more races in the discipline.

Overall leader Petra Vlhova of Slovakia finished 10th and saw her advantage over Gut-Behrami in the overall season standings reduced to 62 points.

Gut-Behrami was seven-hundredths of a second behind Lie at the first split but charged down the Kandahar course, sticking to the ideal race line in a clean run.

"A few months ago, people asked me if I was still able to win a race at all. Now people start talking about the (overall) World Cup. It shows how fast things can change in sport," said Gut-Behrami, who had not won a race between 2018 and 2020.

"For me it's important that I keep my level of skiing, that I can be fast like today and enjoy it."

The race was initially scheduled as a downhill, but bad weather wiped out both training sessions this week.

A downhill race can only take place after the athletes had at least one training run on the course. Another super-G is scheduled for Sunday.

Several racers sat out Germany's World Cup to prepare for the world championship Feb. 8-21 in Cortina d'Ampezzo Italy, most notably Mikaela Shiffrin and Switzerland's Michelle Gisin.

Shiffrin, who won the super-G world title in 2019, has not competed in a speed race for over a year. She had a 10-month break from racing in 2020 and only just resumed training in super-G.

Gagnon's career best world championship result was finishing sixth in alpine combined in 2017 in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

"It's great to be confident going into world champs," Gagnon said. "It gives you a 10 per cent edge over the competition. I just have to ski the skis. I'm really excited for Cortina."

"Having both Greg and Derel in the same offense gives us two #1 WRs on the field at the same time and we're excited about the potential of how explosive we can be as an offense with this dynamic duo. On top of all his attributes on the field, Greg is a great leader and consummate pro with the character we want in our locker-room."

Ellingson joined the CFL in 2013, signing with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. He led the league with 12 receiving touchdowns in 2017 while a member of the Ottawa Redblacks. Ellingson also had stints with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

{allcanada} Alberta-based WHL teams get approval to play condensed season

CALGARY — The Western Hockey League has received government approval to play a rejigged season in Alberta.

The league announced Thursday that its five clubs based in the province — the Red Deer Rebels, Edmonton Oil Kings, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers and Calgary Hitmen — will form a Central Division and play the entire 24-game season in Alberta, starting on Feb. 26.

The 22-team WHL also has clubs in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and B.C., as well as a U.S. Division featuring five teams in Oregon and Washington state.

The league said in a statement that it's still working to get approval to play from government and health authorities in those jurisdictions so start dates can be set for an East Division, B.C. Division and U.S. Division.

COVID-19 protocols will limit the Alberta-based teams to playing one opponent per week, with a five-day break before facing another club.

Testing will be conducted by a private company, and if a player or staff member tests positive for the virus, the team will be required to suspend operations for a minimum of 14 days.

Players will begin quarantining on Jan. 30 before reporting to their clubs on Feb. 6. Once with their teams, players will be tested and undergo another quarantine period before on-ice training begins.

"With our extensive protocols and the necessary approvals now in place, we are looking forward to play getting underway in Alberta and allowing our players to continue their development at the highest level in the Canadian system," WHL commissioner Ron Robison said in a statement.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League resumed its 2020-21 season last week after suspending play in December due to COVID-19 concerns.

All 12 of the league's Quebec-based teams are playing in so-called bubbles in Chicoutimi, Drummondville, Rimouski and Shawinigan, and the three teams based in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. are returning to play this week.

The Ontario Hockey League was originally targeting Feb. 4 to start its season but plans have been put on hold indefinitely due to COVID-19 restrictions.

{allcanada} QMJHL: Islanders blank Eagles as junior hockey returns to Nova Scotia

SYDNEY, N.S. — Colten Ellis stopped 21 shots in his return to action, and the Charlottetown Islanders blanked the Cape Breton Eagles 2-0 on Friday in the first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game for either team in two months.

William Trudeau and Zachary Beauregard supplied the offence to help the Islanders (13-2-0) pick up their fifth win in a row dating back to November.

Goaltender William Grimard stopped 30-of-32 shots for the Eagles (7-9-0).

The QMJHL was the only one of three Canadian major junior leagues to open play around its normal start date this season. But it suspended play Dec. 1.

The QMJHL teams in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island were given government permission to return to action this week, while the league's three teams in New Brunswick continue to sit out.

The QMJHL released a schedule Monday for a series of games between the Eagles, Islanders and Halifax Mooseheads after it said public health officials in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. approved the league's plans to continue the 2020-2021 regular season.

The schedule opened tonight and runs through a Feb. 28 contest between Charlottetown and Cape Breton.

The league said it remains in dialogue with public officials in New Brunswick, which has delayed the return of the Saint John Sea Dogs, Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Moncton Wildcats until the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic in that province improves.

The 12 Quebec-based teams in the QMJHL returned to play last week in protected environments in Chicoutimi, Drummondville, Rimouski and Shawinigan.

{allcanada} O'Ree hopes receiving COVID-19 vaccine will inspire Black community

Willie O'Ree took shots against opposing goalies as an NHL player. He took a shot against the coronavirus Thursday.

O'Ree, the first Black player in NHL history, and his wife, Deljeet, received their first of two doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at a medical facility near their home in San Diego.

The 85-year-old Hockey Hall of Famer, who made his NHL debut for the Boston Bruins against the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 18, 1958, hopes his immunization will inspire people, especially in communities of color, to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as they can.

"There are not a lot of Black people getting their shots," O'Ree said. "Maybe, well, they can say, 'Now Willie O'Ree, he stood in line and he's getting the shot. Maybe it will help out.' Everybody should get it."

The coronavirus has disproportionately impacted minorities, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but polls have shown a greater hesitancy within Black and Hispanic communities to get the vaccine.

In a December poll by the Pew Research Center, 42 percent of Black people said they would definitely or probably get a vaccine if one were available. At the same time, 83 percent of Asian Americans, 63 percent of Hispanic people and 61 percent of White people in the survey said they would do same.

"History absolutely plays a role as to why communities of color are hesitant to get the vaccine," Patrice Harris, the former head of the American Medical Association, told the news website Axios. "We need to earn their trust."

Several notable people of color, from Vice President Kamala Harris to basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, have publicized receiving their COVID-19 shots in hopes of allaying fears and concerns about the vaccines.

Wendell Taylor, president of S.C.O.R.E. Boston, an affiliate of the NHL Hockey is for Everyone initiative, said O'Ree receiving his vaccine will go a long way in helping to encourage reluctant people of color to roll up their sleeves.

"We must build trust within communities of color so they will be willing to get vaccinated," said Taylor, who is chief corporation counsel for a Massachusetts biotechnology firm. "For this reason, it is great to see Willie once again stepping into the forefront to show leadership and begin the process of restoring this trust. His actions help demonstrate that the vaccine is safe, effective and an important part of protecting the safety and welfare of communities of color."

The NHL community has felt the coronavirus' devastating effects. Fred Sasakamoose, one of the first Indigenous players in the NHL, died Nov. 24, 2020, at 86 of complications stemming from COVID-19.

Marlow Stoudamire, a 43-year-old Black Detroit resident who was a driving force in the Detroit Red Wings, NHL and NHL Players' Association's 2020 launch of the $1 million "Learn, Play Score" program to benefit the city's children, died in March 2020 from COVID-related complications.

And former players, from Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Borje Salming to rugged forward Georges Laraque, have been hospitalized because of severe coronavirus symptoms.

{allcanada} Calvillo named Alouettes team ambassador

Anthony Calvillo is back with the Montreal Alouettes.

The Alouettes announced Friday that Calvillo, who led the team to eight Grey Cup games and three championships during his playing career, has taken the position of team ambassador.

"It is almost impossible to mention the name Alouettes without thinking of Anthony, as the two will be forever linked. So it was only natural for us to maintain our family ties with the team and league's greatest quarterback of all-time,"  Alouettes President Mario Cecchini said. "On top of his on-field feats, this adoptive son of Quebec took roots here and we will mutually help ourselves extend then. There is no doubt that his presence will allow us to depeen our relationship with our fans."

The team said Calvillo will remain a member of the Université de Montréal Carabins' coaching staff, in addition to his new role.

"I am very happy to once more be implicated with the Alouettes, and it will be a natural fit for me to represent the organization for which I will be associated with for all of my life. The Alouettes, the City of Montreal and the Province of Quebec will always hold a special place in my heart and I plan on using my new role to connect even more with our fans, as well as with people of the business community," said the CFL's most prolific passer.

Calvillo spent 20 seasons in the CFL, including the last 16 with the Alouettes. He holds numerous CFL passing records, including all-time passing yards with 79,816. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2017.
