Dane Evans is set to get his second straight start at quarterback Thursday night as his BC Lions travel to Winnipeg to take on the Blue Bombers, the team announced Monday.

The 29-year-old from Chickasha, Okla., got his first start of the 2023 CFL season in Week 8 against the Edmonton Elks after starter Vernon Adams Jr. suffered a lower-body injury a week earlier against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Evans entered that Week 7 game in Adams' place and threw for 219 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

"It felt good to get back out there," Evans said Monday reflective of Saturday's win. "I look to do it again. We know we've got a good opponent coming up in a tough environment so it'll be fun to do it again."

"(It's) just another opportunity to go out there and lead the guys," Evans said on the opportunity to start.

"I know when I got traded here, it would be in a backup capacity or something like that. (I was) fully excepting of that; when this team calls on my number I just want to be there and respond."

Evans threw for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Lions' 27-0 win at Commonwealth Stadium, seeing the Elks set a mark for the longest home losing streak in North American pro sports with 21 consecutive losses.

Evans spent four seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2018-19, 2021-22), helping them reach back-to-back Grey Cup games against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in his final two seasons with the Black and Gold.

In seven games this season. Evans has completed 41 passes for 549 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

"I kind of always view myself kind of as that [a starting quarterback]," Evans said when asked if he should be the starter with the Lions or elsewhere. "I knew what I signed up for when I got traded here, I'm, not coming to step on anyone's toes."

" V.A., when comes back, (he) is going to continue his MOP-like season...I'm just trying to do what I can do to help this team win."

{allcanada} Elks preparing to make change at QB under new OC Jackson

Newly-promoted Edmonton Elks offensive coordinator Jarious Jackson told TSN's Ryan Rishaug on Monday that change is coming at quarterback for the winless Elks this week.

The new starter has not been named yet, as Jarret Doege and Canadian Tre Ford will battle for the spot in practice. Taylor Cornelius, who has been the primary QB throughout the year, has been demoted to the third spot in the depth chart.

Cornelius, 27, has completed 101-of-173 pass attempts this year for 1,250 yards with four touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Through eight games, the Elks are last in the CFL in points for (105), offensive points (99), net offence (2,336), and completion percentage (60.1).

If Ford is chosen as the starter, he will become the first Canadian quarterback to start a game in the CFL since Nathan Rourke quarterbacked the B.C. Lions in the Western Final against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last season.

Edmonton set a North American sports record with their 21st consecutive home loss over the weekend when they were shut out by the Lions 27-0.

{allcanada} Atlas FC downs Toronto FC in Leagues Cup; Dunfield falls to 0-6 as TFC coach

--

TORONTO — Terry Dunfield has experienced plenty of tough moments in his brief tenure leading Toronto FC.

He's also had time to reflect.

And if Sunday night was his last patrolling the touchline at BMO Field, the former Canadian international made sure to soak up the atmosphere.

"It's been an incredible ride and such a privilege," Dunfield, the club's interim head coach, said after a 1-0 loss to Mexico's Atlas FC eliminated TFC from the inaugural Leagues Cup tournament.

"Unfortunately, the results and goals haven't represented the work that's gone into it. But we'll continue to keep pushing and finding a way to help give a result to an incredible fan base — man, almost 30,000 people there pushing the guys on.

"It was another special night. Maybe a couple of times I've been able to just live in the moment, and take it in looking across at that big stand."

Dunfield was put in a tough spot when injury-riddled, severely underperforming Toronto fired Bob Bradley on June 26 and elevated the club's under-17 coach to the top job on a trial basis for at least four matches.

The 41-year-old from Vancouver, who declined to answer when asked directly if he'll continue on in the role when Toronto returns to action Aug. 20, endured a sixth straight loss after the struggling Major League Soccer club allowed a goal to Atlas striker Jordy Caicedo in the second minute.

The Liga MX side secured first place in the three-team group with a pair of victories, ahead of New York City FC (1-1-0) and Toronto (0-2-0).

The inaugural Leagues Cup — a two-league, three-country, 47-team competition — runs through Aug. 19.

TFC, which hasn't found the back of the opposition net in 619 minutes and has been outscored 13-0 with Dunfield in charge, needed to win by three or more goals to advance after Wednesday's 5-0 road throttling at the hands of NYCFC.

"A great person and a great personality," midfielder Jonathan Osorio, Toronto's longest-serving player, said of Dunfield. "He is a good coach. He is putting us in the position to be successful. But there's a lot of variables right now that we have to deal with that even he does not have control over.

"He's doing everything he can, and as players we're backing him."

Toronto, which started the season with such promise thanks to a roster accented by Italian stars Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, has been thumped 18-1 over its last eight matches — all losses — is winless in 11 (0-8-3), and has a solitary victory in 17 games (1-12-4) since late April.

"It's on us, on the pitch," defender Raoul Petretta said. "We have to work harder, we have to be better."

An abysmal 3-11-10 in MLS action, TFC won't play again until CF Montreal visits BMO Field in three weeks.

"We're all aware of the situation with goals," said Osorio, who twice hinted in his post-game scrum that management needs to look in the mirror along with the players. "We have to work collectively.

"The responsibility, as well, is on the club … those higher up."

Guadalajara-based Atlas, which is three games into its domestic campaign, opened the scoring just 95 seconds into Sunday's proceedings when Caicedo took advantage of a turnover and curled his shot past outstretched TFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

"Another tough goal," Dunfield said. "I don't think we can hide from that."

Toronto settled down from there, with Osorio testing Camilo Vargas from distance on a deflected effort in the 13th minute before Brandon Servania fizzed a shot at the Atlas 'keeper in the 35th.

Caicedo nearly doubled the visitors' lead just before halftime off another giveaway, but the Ecuador striker's shot hit the post.

Osorio had a penalty shout waved away by referee Nima Saghafi early in the second half as Dunfield's team tried desperately to find a breakthrough.

Atlas was never really troubled, however, and Caicedo again almost had his second in the 80th minute when he rattled the crossbar.

"Maybe this is a blessing that we have these three weeks now to really prepare for the last 10 games (of the MLS regular season)," Osorio said. "And to show the fans that we are doing everything to make them proud.

"We know there's a lot of work. That's what I'll say for now."

Its campaign already in tatters, Toronto was embarrassed in that disastrous Leagues Cup opener at NYCFC in mid-week — a performance that had some observers questioning the roster's commitment and professionalism.

Dunfield dropped Bernardeschi, who is dealing with a minor hamstring issue and hasn't scored in 17 straight matches, to the bench Sunday.

The Vancouver product started two players from TFC's feeder team, including 16-year-old defender Lazar Stefanovic of Oakville, Ont.

"Fantastic performance," Dunfield said. "He was comfortable on the ball. He was immense in defensive transition, defending numbers down.

"I'm excited to continue working with him, hopefully."

Toronto has experienced selection issues throughout Dunfield's time at the helm, with Insigne having seen a solitary half of action because of injury a prime example.

"If we were going to pull it off, we needed nines," Dunfield said of Sunday. "We needed nines out of 10.

"I don't think we quite had that in each moment."

Dunfield will hope his moment in the sun with TFC — as difficult as its been — isn't up.

{allcanada} Argos remain perfect with Touchdown Atlantic victory over Roughriders

HALIFAX — For the second straight Touchdown Atlantic game, the Toronto Argonauts defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders, this time 31-13 in front of another sold-out Nova Scotia crowd.

The Argos, 6-0 for the first time since 1935, got it going early in front of more than 11,000 fans at Huskies Stadium in the heart of Halifax, with Boris Bede kicking it off on a field goal from 35 yards just over a minute into the game, then running back Javon Leake going for 71 yards off an Adam Korsakpunt punt for a touchdown.

Bede added the convert and another field goal to make it 13-0 over the Riders to end the first quarter.

Toronto kept that momentum going into the second quarter, with wide receiver Dejon Brissett making a two-point conversion and quarterback Chad Kelly passing it to Brissett for another touchdown to make it 21-0 before the five-minute mark. Argos defensive Back Daniel Robertson intercepted a Mason Fine pass at 6:38 into the quarter.

The Riders had a chance to earn some points late in the second quarter but fumbled before reaching the end zone and the Argos held on to their 21-0 lead going into the halftime break.

Despite the one-sided score, local fans were on their feet and cheering early in the third quarter when kicker Brett Lauther put the Riders on the scoreboard to make it 21-3 with a field goal from 39 yards at 5:40. Lauther is from Truro, N.S., and a former Saint Mary's Huskies player.

The Roughriders were able to keep the unbeaten Argos at bay going into the fourth, with Lauther adding a second field goal from 44 yards midway through the quarter to close the gap to 21-6.

The Riders continued to hold off the Argos, who lead the CFL's East Division, until late in the game, with Toronto defensive back DaShaun Amos returning a ball 58 years for the touchdown. Bede added another field goal to put Toronto up 31-6 with just over three minutes remaining.

The Riders weren't giving up, though, with quarterback Jake Dolegala passing it deep to wide receiver Shawn Bane Jr. for a touchdown, and Lauther with the convert kick, putting the final score at 31-13 for the Argos.

This year's edition of Touchdown Atlantic marks the event's second regular-season game, the last playing out last year at Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S., where Toronto topped Saskatchewan 30-24 in front of another 10,000-plus sold-out crowd.

UP NEXT

Toronto will travel to Calgary on Friday to play the Stampeders, while Saskatchewan (3-4) will host the Ottawa Redblacks on Aug. 6.

TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors named eight assistants to new head coach Darko Rajakovic's staff on Tuesday.

Pat Delany, Jama Mahlalela, James Wade and assistant coach Jim Sann will be on Toronto's front bench. Mike Batiste, Vin Bhavnani, Drew Jones and Ivo Simovic will be on the backbench.

"This coaching staff reflects the team we want to see on the court — high character, high energy, and high creativity," said Rajakovic. "We've already begun the work we know needs to be done as we head into our first season in Toronto together.

"We're excited by the talent, by our team's potential, and by the job ahead."

Rajakovic was named Toronto's head coach on June 13, the 10th in the team's history.

Sann is returning for his eighth season with the Raptors. Mahlalela returns to Toronto after two seasons as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors, where he helped capture the 2022 NBA Championship. He was an assistant coach with the Raptors during the 2020-21 campaign after two seasons (2018-20) as head coach of Raptors 905, Toronto's G League affiliate.

Delany comes to Toronto after two seasons (2021-23) as an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards. Delany has also served as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic (2018-21) and Charlotte Hornets (2014-18).

Wade joins the Raptors from the WNBA's Chicago Sky, where he spent five years as the team's general manager and head coach. In 2021, he led the Sky to the franchise's first WNBA championship, following four straight years of post-season appearances

Batiste moves to Toronto after a season as an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets. Bhavnani spent a dozen seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, including four as an assistant coach, where he worked alongside Rajakovic.

Jones joins the Raptors from the Detroit Pistons, where he spent two years as an assistant coach. Before that, he was part of the Philadelphia 76ers staff for two seasons (2019-21), focused on player development. Simovoic comes to Toronto from the University of California-Los Angeles, where he was an assistant coach last season.

The Raptors also hired Noah Lewis and Rashaun Broadus on Tuesday as assistant video coordinators/player development coaches. Lewis spent last season as an assistant coach with Raptors 905. Broadus comes to the Raptors from the Memphis Grizzlies and Hustle, where he was a video coordinator and assistant coach.
