{allcanada} Matthews scores 3 as Maple Leafs rally past Devils 6-4

TORONTO (AP) Auston Matthews had three goals and an assist, and the Toronto Maple Leafs scored four times in the third period to rally to a 6-4 win over the New Jersey Devils on Monday night.

Mitch Marner had a goal and two assists, Ilya Mikheyev had a goal and an assist, and Jason Spezza also scored to help the Maple Leafs win their fourth straight. Jack Campbell started and gave up three goals on nine shots before he was pulled midway through the first period. Petr Mrazek had 19 saves the rest of the way.

''Jack hasn't played to the same level he established for himself,'' Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. ''But neither has the team in front of him. That's on us. That's not nearly enough. We've got a guy who battled for us and has been the backbone of this team.''

Campbell's play earned him a trip to the NHL All-Star game in Las Vegas this weekend. But he has given up 16 goals in his last nine-plus periods.

''Our start wasn't very good,'' said Matthews, who now has 28 goals in 38 games. ''We weren't ready from the start. ... Soup (Campbell) didn't play bad. We just gave them some Grade-A chances.''

Jesper Boquist had a goal and an assist for New Jersey, and Pavel Zacha, Andreas Johnsson and Nathan Bastian also scored. Akira Schmid had 27 saves as the Devils lost their fifth straight.

New Jersey had three two-goal leads and was up 4-2 after two periods.

''We put ourselves in good position to win the game against a good team and came up short in the end,'' Devils assistant coach Alain Nasreddine said. ''Gave them too many opportunities there in the end and they made us pay.''

The Maple Leafs trailed 4-2 after 40 minutes before Spezza lifted a shot high into the top of the net 4:16 into the third.

Marner then tied it with 6 1/2 minutes left off a faceoff thanks to some hustle from teammate Michael Bunting, who retrieved a loose puck after Matthews lost the draw. He fed it back to Matthews, who found Marner in front for his sixth goal in a personal best six straight games.

Mikheyev put Toronto ahead 5-4 with a short-handed goal on a rush with Alex Kerfoot with 3:04 remaining, and Matthews completed his fifth career hat trick with an empty-netter in the final minute.

''We just did what we do best in the third period,'' Marner said.

The win came two days after the Maple Leafs overcame a two-goal, third-period deficit in Detroit to beat the Red Wings. It also denied the 21-year-old Schmid his first career win.

''We had a good plan going into the third and I don't think we executed it,'' Zacha said. ''We let them have chances net-front. ... We have to learn from it. That's a tough loss to have but thankfully we have a rematch tomorrow.''

The Devils got off to a fast start as Zacha scored just 47 seconds into the game, and Boqvist made it 2-0 at 6:20.

Matthews' first of the night 13 seconds later pulled the Maple Leafs within one.

After Johnsson restored New Jersey's two-goal lead at 9:10, Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe called a timeout to scold his players and lift Campbell in favor of Mrazek.

Matthews got Toronto back within one on a tip-in with just under five minutes remaining in the opening period.

Bastian pushed the Devils' lead to 4-2 at 7:33 of the second.

SOMBER

New Jersey was without veteran head coach Lindy Ruff, who left the team to be with his family back in Warburg, Alberta, after the death of his 88-year-old father, Leeson.

The teams conclude a home-and-set in New Jersey on Tuesday night before the All-Star break.

{allcanada} Whitecaps transfer Bair to Scotland's St Johnstone FC

The Vancouver Whitecaps have transferred Canadian forward Theo Bair to Scottish side St Johnstone FC, it was announced on Monday.

The 22-year-old Bair made 39 appearances across all competitions for the Whitecaps over three seasons after originally joining the organization via the Whitecaps FC Residency program in 2015.

Bair spent most of the 2021 season on loan with Norwegian second division club Hamarkameratene, where he tallied four goals in 18 appearances. A native of Ottawa, Bair appeared in four games for the Whitecaps at the MLS level in 2021.

"This is a good move for Theo to continue to evolve at this stage of his career. After he made strides forward last year in Norway's second division, this transfer will provide him the best opportunity to progress by playing meaningful minutes at Scotland's highest level," said Whitecaps FC sporting director Axel Schuster in a news release. "We will follow Theo closely because the door is always open for a return to the Whitecaps in the future."

"Thank you, Vancouver. After seven years, it's time to part ways with the club that means so much to me and my family. From entering the academy as a young boy from Ottawa to playing at BC Place in front of all the amazing fans, thank you," added Bair in the same release. "This was a very difficult decision to make but one that lets me explore my dream even further. I am thankful to my teammates, the academy, all the staff and fans who supported me through it all. Without the city of Vancouver, I wouldn't be the man I am today. Vancouver will always be my home and no matter where football takes me, I will always be a Whitecap. Thank you all for everything and I am excited for my next step. See you soon."

{allcanada} Stampeders extend star running back Carey

Ka'Deem Carey is staying in Calgary.

The Stampeders announced Monday that Carey has signed a two-year contract, keeping the star running back in Calgary through 2023.

TSN Football Insider Farhan Lalji reports Carey is receiving $130,000 in hard money per season, plus incentives. He was set to become a free agent on Feb. 8.

Carey finished second in the CFL last season with 869 rushing yards, while scoring a league-leading seven rushing touchdowns.

The 29-year-old Arizona product originally joined the Stamps for the 2019 season after playing 37 games for the Chicago Bears from 2014 to 2016.

"Ka'Deem is a dynamic playmaker who was outstanding for us in 2021," said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel in a news release. "The ability to run the ball is a critical part of a balanced offence and we're confident Ka'Deem will be able to do that for us over the next two seasons."

"I'm so happy to be back with all my guys on the offensive line – we are locked and loaded!" said Carey in the same release. "We have the best o-line in the league and I think Coach Dickie (Dave Dickenson) is the best offensive mind in the CFL.

"I love working with him and the rest of the Calgary coaching staff. It's a great bunch of guys in that locker room and I love playing in front of the fans in Calgary. Thanks to Huff for having faith in me and I can't wait to get out there and for us to finish what we started. God is good."

{allcanada} Kadri leads 3 Stars of the Week

NEW YORK - Colorado Avalanche center Nazem Kadri, Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen and Calgary Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending Jan. 30.

FIRST STAR - NAZEM KADRI, C, COLORADO AVALANCHE

Kadri topped the NHL with 3-5-8 and three game-winning goals in four outings to help the Avalanche (32-8-3, 67 points) move into first place in the overall League standings via a perfect week and their 10th straight victory dating to Jan. 14. He scored the decisive goal in a 2-0 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks Jan. 24. Kadri then recorded consecutive three-point performances, collecting three assists (including the primary helper on Cale Makar's overtime winner) in a 4-3 victory against the Boston Bruins Jan. 26 and 1-2-3 (including the GWG) in a 6-4 triumph over the Blackhawks Jan. 28. He capped the week with his 30th career game-winning goal and fifth of the season in a 4-1 victory against the Buffalo Sabres Jan. 30. The 31-year-old London, Ont., native - who is set to make his NHL All-Star Game debut this Saturday in Las Vegas (3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT, ABC, Sportsnet, TVA Sports) - has skated in 40 total contests in 2021-22, ranking second in the League with a career-high 41 assists and third with 59 points (two shy of his personal best set in 82 games in 2016-17 w/ TOR).

SECOND STAR - FREDERIK ANDERSEN, G, CAROLINA HURRICANES

Andersen went 3-0-0 with a 1.91 goals-against average and .938 save percentage as the Hurricanes (31-9-2, 64 points) moved into first place in the Metropolitan Division via a perfect four-game week. He turned aside 26 shots in a 4-3 overtime win against the Vegas Golden Knights Jan. 25. Andersen then made 37 saves and denied all three shootout attempts he faced in a 3-2 triumph over the Ottawa Senators Jan. 27. He finished the week with 27 stops in a 2-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks Jan. 30, his sixth straight win dating to Jan. 15. The 32-year-old Herning, Denmark, native - who is scheduled to participate in his second career NHL All-Star Game (also 2020 w/ TOR) - has played in 30 total contests during his first season with Carolina, placing among the League leaders in wins (t-1st; 24), goals-against average (2nd; 2.01) and save percentage (3rd; .929). His 24 victories are the most by any goaltender through their first 30 appearances with an NHL franchise.

THIRD STAR - JOHNNY GAUDREAU, LW, CALGARY FLAMES

Gaudreau registered 2-6-8 in four games, pacing the NHL with six assists and a +8 rating to propel the Flames (21-13-6, 48 points) to a 3-1-0 week and into the final Wild Card position in the Western Conference. Gaudreau compiled seven points over his first two outings, including 1-3-4 (his 11th career four-point performance) in a 7-1 victory against the St. Louis Blues Jan. 24 and three assists in a 6-0 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets Jan. 26. After being held off the scoresheet in a 5-1 loss to the Blues Jan. 27, Gaudreau rebounded with his 10th career overtime goal (all w/ CGY) - the second-most in franchise history - in a 1-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks Jan. 29. The 28-year-old Salem, N.J., native - who will be making his sixth career NHL All-Star Game appearance this weekend - has appeared in 40 total contests this season, sitting among the League leaders in plus/minus (t-3rd; +29), assists (t-7th; 35) and points (8th; 52).

{allcanada} Muzzin to miss next two games before break for Maple Leafs

Jake Muzzin will not play the next two games for the Maple Leafs while the defenseman continues to recover from a concussion.

The Maple Leafs face the New Jersey Devils at Scotiabank Arena on Monday (7:30 p.m. ET; SNE, SNO, MSG, ESPN+, NHL LIVE) and Tuesday at Prudential Center before having a week until their next game, Feb. 7 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

"He's going to take a bit of a step back here with the break upcoming," coach Sheldon Keefe said. "He was not going to be available to play in either of these games, so it just made sense to do that. The [medical staff] is going to continue to monitor him and work with him with hopes to ramp things up as we get back from the break and perhaps even throughout the break in his case."

Muzzin sustained a concussion Jan. 15 against the St. Louis Blues in a collision with forward Klim Kostin and has missed the past four games.

"The recovery takes time in a lot of cases," Keefe said. "The fact he was able to do so much work leading up to this last little bit, with the break upcoming it's been a little easier to pull back, so my concern level is right where it should be. Any time a player has a head injury, the concern is significant, but I believe he is on the right track and the medical team is on top of it. We're going to do everything we can do to give him the best care possible and when he is ready to play, we will welcome him back."

{allcanada} Canada takes another step, beats U.S. in Hamilton

HAMILTON — Cyle Larin shot his way into the record book and Canada continued its march towards Qatar 2022 with a 2-0 win over the U.S. in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying play Sunday.

The 40th-ranked Canadians went ahead early with an opportune goal through Larin and then stood their ground, bending but not breaking as the 11th-ranked Americans — who had more of the ball — probed the home defence without success.

It came down to Canada finishing a chance and the Americans unable to take theirs. Still it made for a tense finale as the U.S. pressed hard through five minutes of extra time.

Sam Adekugbe added the insurance goal in the 95th minute, on a solo rush after the Americans were caught deep in the Canada end. It was his first goal in 26 international appearances.

Canada (6-0-4, 22 points) remains atop the eight-team standings in the final round of qualifying in CONCACAF while moving another step closer to Qatar 2022. The U.S. (5-2-3, 18 points) lost ground and faced losing second place in the table to Mexico pending later results.

The match at Tim Hortons Field was Canada's 16th in World Cup qualifying since last March, with John Herdman's team improving to 12-0-4 while notching a fifth straight win.

Canada took the lead after just seven minutes when a Matt Turner goal kick hung up in the wind. Kamal Miller headed to the ball to Jonathan Osorio, who flicked it to Larin. The Besiktas striker played a give-and-go with Jonathan David and beat Turner with a right-footed shot as defenders struggled to catch him.

It was Larin's record 23rd goal for Canada in his 46th appearance, moving him past Dwayne De Rosario atop the men's scoring list. Canada's Christine Sinclair is the world's all-time leading goal-scorer with 188.

"Goooaall. Congrats Cyle Larin, well done young man and a great way to capture leading scorer," tweeted De Rosario. "Keep it going."

It was also the kind of rapid-fire goal the Canadian men, always dangerous in transition with their speed and finishing ability, have become known for.

In later games Sunday, it was No. 49 Costa Rica at No. 40 Mexico, No. 57 Jamaica at No. 63 Panama and No. 70 El Salvador at No. 76 Honduras.

The Canadian men were coming off a 2-0 win Thursday in Honduras, their first victory there since 1985, while the Americans downed El Salvador 1-0 in Columbus.

Canada now flies south to wrap up the international window against El Salvador in San Salvador on Wednesday while the Americans host Honduras in St. Paul, Minn.

The Canadian men will have three remaining games after that. Come March, the top three teams will book their ticket t Qatar 2022 while the fourth-placed side will face an Oceania country to see who joins them in representing North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The game sold out within hours with Canada Soccer expecting a crowd of 24,000. But stricter pandemic-related restrictions limited the crowd to 12,000, after the first ticket sale was voided and a smaller second one was held.

Despite such limits, there was plenty of atmosphere. The Canadian bus arrived at the stadium Sunday to cheers, flares and streamers from jubilant fans.

"It was pretty amazing … Goosebumps. You could feel it on the bus," Herdman said of the welcome.

It was -5 C, feeling like -7, at the 3 p.m. ET kickoff, and got colder as the afternoon wore on. Despite the chill, there was a festive feel with flag-waving fans singing along to "Sweet Caroline" while waiting for teams to take the field. The crowd then delivered a passionate rendition of "O Canada."

Mexican referee Cesar Ramos let the teams play, allowing for some physical challenges on both sides.

After going down 1-0, the Americans began to mount some attacks but lacked a clinical finish. Canadian defenders did their part, throwing their body in the way as the U.S. held the edge in possession.

Canadian defender Steven Vitoria was cautioned for a professional foul in the 31st minute, a second yellow that means he will miss the El Salvador game.

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic had a chance from a free kick just outside the Canadian penalty box in the 36th minute but fired his shot well high.

It was Milan Borjan, who grew up in Hamilton, to the rescue with a spectacular reflex save in the 43rd minute, using his right hand to claw away a Weston McKennie header off a Pulisic corner. The Red Star Belgrade 'keeper, who made two crucial saves in the win over Honduras, pounded the Canada badge on his chest after denying the Americans.

The U.S. had 64 per cent possession in the first half but only one of its seven shots was on target in the first 45 minutes.

The Americans kept pressing in the second half, with Canada looking to counterattack through David and Larin. Borjan comfortably handled a Brenden Aaronson shot in the 59th minute.

Turner came up big in the 70th, stopping David's long-range shot and then Larin's close-range effort off the rebound.

Larin exited in the 73rd minute, to a standing ovation. U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter turned to his bench, bringing on all his available substitutes by the 76th minute.

The visitors finished with 10 men with defender Chris Robinson limping off in the dying minutes and Berhalter out of subs.

Borjan easily handled a Pulisic free kick in stoppage time.

Canada was without Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, who has been sidelined by myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, after testing positive for COVID-19.

"Time to show #canmnt is here to stay. Good luck to my teammates tonight," Davies tweeted before kickoff.

Once again, the 21-year-old from Edmonton still managed to entertain, livestreaming on Twitch as he watched the game and celebrated Larin's goal.

Influential midfielder Stephen Eustaquio was also still missing, in wake of reports in Portugal he had tested positive for COVID.

Herdman made four changes to his starting 11, introducing Miller, Osorio, Mark-Anthony Kaye and Richie Laryea. Borjan captained the team with Atiba Hutchinson rested.

The Canadian starting 11 came into the match with a combined 345 caps, compared to 262 for the Americans.

Tyler Adams captained the U.S. for the seventh time. The team had previously gone 4-0-2 in matches where Adams wears the armband.

The U.S. was missing defender Brooks Lennon (ankle) and forward Tim Weah, who was unable to get into Canada due to his vaccination status.

Weah, who plays his club football for Lille, had his first vaccine dose and then contracted COVID-19 while awaiting his second shot, a combination that meets full vaccination requirements in France but not in Canada, according to Berhalter.

Canada and the U.S. tied 1-1 when they met in Nashville in September in both teams' second outing of the final round.

While the Americans led the overall series between the two North American rivals at 16-9-12 (12-1-7 since 1990) coming into the match, Canada had a 6-4-4 edge in World Cup qualifying.

Sunday's game was the first between the two on Canadian soil since October 2019, when Canada downed the U.S. 2-0 in CONCACAF Nations League play to end a 34-year, 17-match winless run against its North American neighbour.

It also marked the first-ever match at Tim Hortons Field for the Canadian men.

{allcanada} Price hoping to return to Canadiens 'pretty soon'

Carey Price said he is hopeful he will be able to play again with the Montreal Canadiens sooner rather than later.

"Yeah, it's definitely an objective for me this season," Price said Sunday. "You know, it's always been my goal, ever since I got back here. Obviously, I've had a couple of setbacks that weren't foreseen. It's been a frustrating process, no doubt, but at the end of the day, I've got to take care of it. And, you know, moving forward, I'm starting to skate again, so hopefully I'll keep on progressing and be able to get back into uniform pretty soon."

The 34-year-old goalie hasn't played this season after having knee surgery July 23. The Canadiens said he would need 10-12 weeks to recover but then announced Jan. 17 that Price would have to restart his rehabilitation without a timetable to return.

It was another setback for Price, who had been making slow progress until Montreal paused activities earlier in January as a COVID-19 preventative measure, during which time he contracted the virus.

However, Price was able to skate in full equipment for the first time since mid-December on Saturday, and he said what happens "over the next couple of weeks" will determine his ability to play this season.

"I'm obviously a little bit anxious myself to find out some answers. So, I don't have them right now, but we'll find out soon enough," Price said. "It's going to be interesting to see how my knee responds. I'm hoping for the best.

"I obviously want this to go well, and you know, if I have another setback, I'm just going to start over again. That's the only option that I have."

When asked whether he had concerns about if he could return to top form, Price admitted he wasn't sure.

"It's crossed my mind," he said. "You know, when you go through an injury like this and you've had setbacks, which I've had them before, you know, there's always going to be a little bit of doubt. That's just a fact of being injured. You're an athlete performing at an apex level. You're always going to wonder if you're going to be the same player when you come back. But you know, we have such an amazing training staff here that they give you the best odds of coming back to your full capability.

"So, I'm just going to trust in the process, and hopefully that when I get back on the ice with the guys, that will be right back to where I was at."

Sunday was the first time Price has spoken with the media since he released a statement Nov. 9 after participating in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program for substance use. Price said the decision to enter the program was difficult, but that it was necessary for him to get out of what he described in the statement as "a very dark place."

"I was in a position where I definitely needed to reach out, and it was a trying time for sure," Price said. "But at the end of the day, it was one that I knew had to be made, and ultimately, it was one that was successful, and I'm very thankful for the help that I got.

"I'm tremendously grateful for all the support that I've received from not only the fans, but the Montreal Canadiens themselves, my teammates, and obviously my family. I've had quite the journey, obviously, since the start of the season, and it would have been a lot more difficult if I hadn't had such a warm sense of encouragement from everyone."

Last season, Price was 13-9 with a 2.28 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and one shutout in 22 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when he helped the Canadiens advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since winning the Cup in 1993. They lost the best-of-7 series in five games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

But the Canadiens (8-29-7) haven't been able to replicate that success this season. They are last in the NHL standings and have lost 12 of their past 13 games (1-8-4).

"I know it's been a frustrating time for everybody," Price said. "It's been one for me as well. And you know, it's been a long year, and I know there's a lot of frustrations out there, but everybody out here is trying their hardest, everybody's putting the work and doing their best.

"So know for me personally, it's been a long stretch. It's been hard to be out watching your teammates, especially not having success."

Selected by the Canadiens with the No. 5 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft, Price is 360-257-79 with a 2.50 GAA, .917 save percentage and 49 shutouts in 707 regular-season NHL games (695 starts). He has the most wins in their history and is second among active NHL goalies behind Marc-Andre Fleury of the Chicago Blackhawks (506).

"It's a big part of my identity for one, being a goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens has been my life for over a decade," Price said. "Obviously, ending the season on such a disappointing note last year, I just want to be able to get back in there and just continue playing. And to be able to put that sweater on again is something that, you know, is keeping me motivated at this point."

{allcanada} Larin becomes Canadian men's team all-time leading scorer

Cyle Larin has made men's Canadian soccer history.

The 26-year-old from Brampton, Ont., scored in the sixth minute of Canada's CONCACAF World Cup qualifying game against the United States at Tim Hortons Field on Sunday to become the all-time leading scorer in Canadian national men's team history.

He now has 23 goals in 44 appearances, breaking a tie with Dwayne De Rosario.

Earlier this week, Canada defeated Honduras 2-0 at San Pedro Sula to remain undefeated at the top of the CONCACAF qualifying table.

An early own-goal by Honduras, credited to Tajon Buchanan, and a second-half Jonathan David strike accounted for Canada's two markers in the victory.

They will wrap up the current section of Qatar qualifying Wednesday in El Salvador.

{allcanada} Canucks' Tyler Myers ejected for hit to head on Flames' Trevor Lewis

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers was given a match penalty and game misconduct for a hit to the head on Calgary Flames forward Trevor Lewis.

The incident occurred midway through the first period. As both players pursued the puck behind the Canucks' net, Lewis appeared to hit Myers in the face with his glove. In response, Myers drove his body hard into Lewis -- making contact with his head.

The severity of the penalty was determined after a video review and -- because a match penalty was assessed -- the NHL's Department of Player Safety will review the play to determine whether it warrants a hearing.

Lewis was forced to leave the game after the hit but did re-join his teammates on the bench to start the second period.

Myers has 11 assists in 43 Canucks games this season.

{allcanada} Savard out eight weeks for Canadiens with ankle injury

David Savard will be out eight weeks for the Montreal Canadiens because of a right ankle injury.

The defenseman was injured Jan. 12 blocking a shot during a 5-1 loss at the Boston Bruins.

Savard played seven games before he was scratched Saturday, when the Canadiens lost 7-2 to the Edmonton Oilers.

The 31-year-old scored nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 42 games in his first season with Montreal after signing a four-year, $14 million contract ($3.5 million average annual value) as a free agent this offseason.

He scored six points (one goal, five assists) in 54 regular-season games with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning last season, and had five assists in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Lightning win the Stanley Cup.

The Canadiens played Saturday without defenseman Joel Edmundson (undisclosed); goalie Jake Allen (lower body); and forwards Paul Byron (hip), Brendan Gallagher (lower body), Jonathan Drouin (upper body), Christian Dvorak (concussion protocol) and Mathieu Perreault (undisclosed).

Gallagher and Byron are expected to play against the Blue Jackets on Sunday (7 p.m. ET; TSN2, RDS, BSOH, ESPN+, NHL LIVE). The Canadiens (8-28-7) have lost five in a row (0-3-2) and are 1-7-4 in their past 12 games.

{allcanada} VanVleet, Raptors outlast Heat in triple-OT

MIAMI (AP) — Fred VanVleet hit two 3-pointers in the third overtime and the Toronto Raptors outlasted the Miami Heat 124-120 on Saturday night.

Gary Trent Jr. led Toronto with 33 points, Scottie Barnes added 22, Pascal Siakam had 21, and OG Anunoby 20. Sidelined the previous two games because of right knee soreness, VanVleet finished with 19 points.

"We hung in there and certainly could've went either way several times," Toronto coach Nick Nurse said. "And to just keep hanging in there and keep fighting and keep figuring it out."

VanVleet's first 3 tied it at 117. Anunoby's dunk with 3:05 left put Toronto ahead for good before VanVleet connected again from long distance and a 122-117 lead.

"We fought through some adversity so it was good for us tonight to stick it out and keep our composure," VanVleet said.

Jimmy Butler had a triple-double with 37 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists for the Eastern Conference-leading Heat.

"It was highly competitive and wild swings, back and forth, of emotion," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was going to require a great deal of mental toughness to be able to fight through a lot of frustrating moments in the first three quarters, but I thought we responded. Just a terrific ball game in the fourth quarter and all the overtimes."

After shooting 3 for 15 in regulation, VanVleet was 4 of 7 in the overtime periods.

"At that point we tried everybody, everybody had a shot," VanVleet said. "Everybody had their chance once and it came to me again. By that point I'm going to shoot those and if we miss them we lose and if I make them we win."

Former Raptors guard Kyle Lowry missed his seventh straight game for Miami. Lowry, who joined the Heat in the offseason after nine years in Toronto, is out because of personal reasons.

Miami prematurely celebrated Gabe Vincent's dribble to the front court and 35-foot heave that bounced in and would have given the Heat a 3-point win in the second overtime. But Vincent had not seen Spoelstra signal a timeout before his attempt.

Emotionally, it was a battle for us, going in there on the second night of a back to back," said Heat guard Tyler Herro, who finished with 13 points. "The mentality is just to do whatever it takes to get the win and we came up a little short. But we battled and that's all we can ask for."

Two free throws from Trent with 16.8 seconds left in overtime tied it at 105 and forced the first additional five minutes. Trent shot 13 of 28 from the field in his third consecutive game of scoring 30 or more points.

The Heat rallied from a 16-point third quarter deficit and outscored Toronto 27-17 in the fourth period.

{allcanada} Bunting nets hat trick, Leafs rally in 3rd to beat Red Wings

DETROIT (AP) Michael Bunting had three goals, Rasmus Sandin scored the tiebreaker with 2:51 remaining and the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied for five unanswered goals in the third period to beat the Detroit Red Wings 7-4 on Saturday night.

Mitch Marner scored a power-play goal with 1:14 left and John Tavares, who assisted on Sandin's goal, made it 7-4 with 11 seconds to go. Pierre Engvall also scored for Toronto, which won its second consecutive game.

''We knew that if we got the first goal of the third period, we had a good chance of winning,'' Bunting said. ''We had our chances. They just weren't going in. Fortunately, they started going in in the third.''

Auston Matthews, Alexander Kerfoot and David Kampf each had two assists. Petr Mrazek made 31 saves.

''I felt confident we could score two goals,'' Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. ''Our best people made some big-time plays and we put pressure on Detroit. It's a great win for us. Not a great game, but a great win.''

Dylan Larkin scored twice and added an assist for Detroit. Vladislav Namestnikov and Tyler Bertuzzi each had a goal for the Red Wings, who led 4-2 after two periods. Robby Fabbri and Moritz Seider each had two assists.

The Red Wings broke a 1-all tie after the first period with goals by Namestikov and Bertuzzi less than a minute apart early in the second.

''We gave up some opportunities we didn't need to in the second period,'' Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. ''Then in the third, they had all the momentum and we didn't have enough pushback. There weren't enough shifts where we made them defend, and then obviously the third our D-zone coverage was no good.''

NOTES: Blashill coached his 500th game with the Red Wings, becoming the fifth Detroit coach to reach the milestone. ... Alex Nedeljkovic, who stopped 30 shots, started in goal for Detroit for the eighth time in nine games. ... Nedeljkovic and Mrazek both played for Carolina last season.
