{allcanada} Whitecaps fall to Earthquakes in first loss of MLS season

Lucky Strike AMF

VANCOUVER — Beau Leroux scored and the San Jose Earthquakes downed the Whitecaps 1-0 on Saturday, marking Vancouver's first loss of the Major League Soccer season.

The 'Caps (4-1-0) controlled play through much of the game and outshot the visitors 11-7 but couldn't beat Daniel De Sousa Britto in the San Jose net.

Leroux put away the lone goal of the match in the second minute of first-half injury time, blasting a long-distance shot past Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.

The announced crowd of 21,261 at B.C. Place expressed their displeasure with the officiating several times across Saturday's match, heartily booing a series of perceived missed calls.

San Jose improved to 4-1-0 on the season, with their lone loss coming at the hands of the Seattle Sounders last week.

It's been a difficult week for Vancouver, which was eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions Cup Thursday after falling 5-1 to the Sounders on aggregate over a two-game, round-of-16 series.

The Whitecaps had ample chances to open the scoring across the first half on Saturday.

Edier Ocampo floated a cross in to Brian White in the 22nd minute and the 'Caps striker put a header on target, only to see the Brazilian 'keeper make the stop.

Eight minutes later, White got his head on another ball at the side of the six-yard box, ticking a shot on target. Britto dove, stretched out and got a hand in the ball's path to make another save.

San Jose opened the scoring in first-half injury time when Leroux collected a rebound above the penalty area and blasted a right-footed rocket into the Vancouver net.

The 'Caps went into the locker room down 1-0. It was the first time this season they've trailed in MLS play

Vancouver controlled 55.7 per cent of possession across the first half and held a 3-2 edge in on-target shots. Each side had six total shots.

The home side continued to press in the second half but had trouble getting through San Jose's high-pressure defence.

Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sorensen tinkered with his lineup in a bid to spark more offence, bringing German legend Thomas Muller in out of the break, then adding playmaking midfielder Sebastian Berhalter off the bench in the 75th minute.

Vancouver got several solid shots in the game's dying minutes, including a blast from Kenji Cabrera in the second minute of stoppage time that sailed just wide of the post.

NOTES

Former Germany teammates Muller and Timo Werner faced each other for the first time in MLS in the second half. The two came into the game having faced each other 13 times in Bundesliga play, with Muller holding a 8-4-1 record in those matchups. … Earthquakes left back Dejuan Jones suffered a game-ending injury in the 52nd minute. The American defender was running up field solo with the ball when he fell. He lay on the turf for several minutes before being helped off by trainers.

UP NEXT

The Whitecaps will return from the March international break on April 4 when they host their regional rivals, the Portland Timbers. The Earthquakes face San Diego FC in San Jose the same day.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) The Ottawa Senators had a dominant game against their provincial rivals beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Saturday night.

Anthony Stolarz was expected to get the start but took a puck to the throat during warm-ups and was sent to hospital for precautionary imaging putting Joseph Woll back in action. Woll had faced 36 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to Carolina on Friday night.

Tim Stutzle, Claude Giroux, Warren Foegele, Michael Amadio and Ridly Greig scored for Ottawa. Tyler Kleven and Jordan Spence added two assists each, and Woll stopped 38 shots.

John Tavares and Easton Cowan scored for the Maple Leafs, who were without captain Auston Matthews who had knee surgery on Thursday. Linus Ullmark made 12 saves.

Trailing 3-1 to start the third the Leafs made it close with a goal by Cowan.

The Senators regained the two-goal lead midway through the period when Amadio scored his 12th of the season, tucking in Spence's rebound. On an odd-man rush Dylan Cozens found Greig in the slot.

The Senators made it 2-0 midway through the period when Giroux grabbed Kleven's rebound and backhanded it past Woll.

Foegele made it 3-0 with just over two minutes remaining when his shot deflected off Simon Benoit, but 21 seconds later Tavares completed the give-and-go with Cowan and beat Ullmark under the arm.

Ottawa opened the scoring at 14:58 of the first with a power-play goal. Stutzle stepped into the faceoff circle and wristed a shot clean past Woll.

Morgan Rielly missed the game and is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

{allcanada} Toronto FC keeps points streak alive with comeback victory over Columbus

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Lucky Strike AMF

TORONTO — It was a day of firsts for Toronto FC's Jose Cifuentes and Walker Zimmerman

The Reds extended their points streak to three games with a 2-1 comeback victory over the visiting Columbus Crew at BMO Field.Cifuentes, a midfielder, and Zimmerman, a centre back, both scored their first-ever goals for TFC.

The win was especially gratifying for the Reds after they allowed a goal in the 98th minute to the New York Red Bulls last weekend, settling for a disappointing 1-1 tie in the club's home opener.

"To be on the right side of a late goal (today) felt really good and I'm really happy for the guys going into this international break that we can have some momentum and be proud of the way we played," said Zimmerman. "It was frustrating last week, not only with the result, but the way we played at home.

"We felt we left a lot on the table there and wanted to be a lot more aggressive this game and I thought our performance in general was more deserving of three points this week."

Wessam Abou Ali of Columbus, in the fourth minute, opened the scoring for the visiting side, but Cifuentes got TFC on the board in the 56th minute. It was the Ecuadorean international's first career goal for the Reds since joining the club last August on loan from the Glasgow Rangers.

Cifuentes was listed as questionable before the game because of a knee issue but was in the starting XI. He left the game in the 75th minute and was replaced by Malik Henry.

Zimmerman, who joined TFC as a free agent in January after six seasons with Nashville SC, scored the winner in the 83rd minute when he headed a hard corner kick by Djordje Mihailovic from the centre of the box into the Columbus goal, giving the Reds a lead that they never relinquished.

"(The goal feels) special in the sense that you always want to score at an important time (in a match)," said Zimmerman. "I knew we needed three points and it felt like, at the time, it would secure us the win.

"So … game winning goal, first one for the club, having my family here, all those things make it special. We live to score and have those moments so every time I score, I mean, jubilation, I'm pumped, I'm freaking out and excited to get back to the next play."

The Crew, winless in five games this season, held a slight advantage in possession (54 per cent to 46 per cent) but was outshot 12-7. Toronto also had seven shots on goal to four by Columbus.

The win improved TFC's season record to two wins, a draw and two losses.

The match represented the first TFC start for DP striker Josh Sargent buthe was replaced by Mihailovic to start the second half. TFC coach Robin Fraser said Sargent being substituted to start the second was planned.

"Today, compared to last week, I thought we were much more aggressive _ earlier, higher up the field, and as a result it made it very difficult for them to play out at times," said Fraser. "So, I was really proud of the engagement and the aggressive mindset.

"I think that set the tone for the entire game."

Despite TFC dominating possession early in the first half, the Crew jumped ahead 1-0 in the fourth minute when midfielder Max Arfsten received a long pass down the left side of the field from midfielder Dylan Chambost. Following a nice cross into the box by Chambost, Ali headed the ball into the corner past TFC keeper Luka Gavran for the lead.

The Reds kept pushing in the half and were awarded three straight corner kicks in the 40th minute. All were taken by attacking midfielder Alonso Coello, who almost connected on all three, the second of which was saved at the last minute by a Columbus defender as the ball headed toward the goal.

Later, veteran TFC midfielder Jonathan Osorio intercepted a bad clearing attempt by Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte in the box and found Daniel Salloi alone in front. The Hungarian winger directed his hurried strike just wide of the goal.

Osorio, of Brampton Ont., played in his 400th game in all competitions for TFC.

"I'm glad it's over with," said Osorio, with a laugh when asked about his milestone. "No, it's great.

"Again, I don't take being here for granted, I don't take playing football for granted. It's a blessing every day and I come into every day enjoying it and really giving it my all. And to do it with my home club is more than anybody can ask for."

In the 52nd minute, Columbus midfielder Diego Rossi almost put his team two goals ahead when he picked up a pass on a counterattack and right-footed a hard shot off the left goalpost.

The tying goal came in the 56th minute when Cifuentes collected a pass from Daniel Salloi, settled it down, and then right-footed a shot from the centre of the box into the far corner. Canadian international Richie Laryea also picked up an assist on the goal.

Seconds later, Schulte was forced to make a diving save on a right-footed shot by Salloi from just outside the box.

Due to the international break, the Reds don't play their next game until April 4 when they host the Colorado Rapids.

{allcanada} Draisaitl hopes to return for Oilers 'at some point' in playoffs: report

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Simply Wholesale

Leon Draisaitl is hoping to return for the Edmonton Oilers this season in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, should the team qualify.

"I hope so. That's the plan, the reason I'm here right now," Draisaitl told Sky Sport on Saturday while attending an FC Bayern Munich soccer game in Munich. "(The recovery) will definitely take a few weeks. That's for sure. I hope we play long enough so I can help out again at some point."

On Tuesday, the Oilers announced the center was expected to be out for the rest of the regular season because of a lower-body injury. Sky Sport said Draisaitl is in Munich receiving treatment for the injury.

The 30-year-old was injured in a 3-1 win against the Nashville Predators on March 15. Draisaitl left the game after taking a hit from Predators forward Ozzy Wiesblatt at 4:20 of the first period. He returned for two shifts toward the end of the period but did not play in the second or third.

Draisaitl is fourth in the NHL with 97 points (35 goals, 62 assists) in 65 games.

"I'll be here in Munich until Tuesday, then I'm going back home," Draisaitl said Saturday.

The Oilers (34-27-9), who have 12 games remaining in the regular season, are second in the Pacific Division, three points behind the Anaheim Ducks and one ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Edmonton hosts the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday (10 p.m. ET; CBC, SN, CITY, TVAS2, The Spot).

"You don't fill the void," Oilers captain Connor McDavid said Monday. "We have lots of guys in here that can lead. We have lots of different guys that have a voice in here. Obviously he's got a big one. If he's not playing for a little bit or if he is, it doesn't matter. We need leaders this time of year and we need our group to be lively and energetic, and that's with or without him in the lineup."

The playoffs are scheduled to begin on April 18, two days after the Oilers' final regular-season game.

Draisaitl is a four-time 50-goal scorer, leads the NHL in goals since the start of the 2018-19 season (359) and is second in points (846), behind McDavid (941). He won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for leading the NHL in goals in 2024-25 (52) and the Art Ross Trophy in 2019-20, when he led the League with 110 points. That same season, he won the Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) and Ted Lindsay Award (most outstanding player as voted by the NHL Players' Association).

The No. 3 pick by Edmonton in the 2014 NHL Draft, Draisaitl has 1,053 points (434 goals, 619 assists) in 855 regular-season games and 141 points (52 goals, 89 assists) in 96 playoff games.

{allcanada} Panthers’ Greer to have phone hearing for boarding

Florida Panthers forward A.J. Greer will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Sunday for boarding Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary.

The hearing will be over the phone, according to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.

The incident occurred with just under nine minutes remaining in the third when Greer shoved Zary in the numbers and sent him tumbling face-first into the boards. The 24-year-old centre stayed down and clutched at his upper-back/neck area before eventually skating off the ice and going down the tunnel under his own power accompanied by a trainer.

Greer was handed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit. He was also called for hooking at the start of the sequence, which initially caused Zary to lose his balance. Calgary scored twice on the extended power play to give them a multi-goal lead late.

"Terrible hit. It was awful," Flames head coach Ryan Huska told reporters after the game.

Zary had three hits in 13:20 of ice time before departing. Greer had a goal and four hits in 13:23 of action.

Zary has 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points in 68 games so far this season, his third with Calgary.

{allcanada} Thunder will not visit White House to celebrate NBA championship, citing 'timing issue'

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Oklahoma City Thunder will not be making the customary visit to the White House to celebrate their 2025 NBA Championship, a team spokesperson told The Athletic on Friday. In a statement to The Athletic, the team cited "timing issues" as a reason for not holding the visit.

"We have been in touch with the White House and we are appreciative and grateful for the communication we have had, but the timing just didn't work out," the team told The Athletic.

The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals last June to secure the championship. The title was the team's first since the franchise moved from Seattle in 2007.

Though visiting the White House after winning the NBA championship dates back to the 1960s, President Donald Trump's election in 2016 disrupted that tradition. The Golden State Warriors chose to decline the White House's invitation after winning the Finals in 2017, before doing the same in 2018.

Oklahoma City would have been the first team to visit the White House since President Trump took office for his second term. The Boston Celtics, who won the championship in 2024, visited the White House later that fall while President Joe Biden was still in office.

The Thunder are in the middle of a five-game road trip. Oklahoma City does play the Washington Wizards on Saturday, a trip that would have been a logical time for a White House visit, but the tight turnaround before playing the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday may have contributed to the "timing issues."

Oklahoma City is on pace for another strong postseason run this year, currently leading the NBA with 55 wins. They became the first NBA team to officially punch their ticket to the playoffs earlier this week.
