VANCOUVER — Thomas Muller scored twice, powering the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-0 Major League Soccer victory over visiting Toronto FC on Saturday.

The German soccer legend converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute, then added another goal in the 37th minute as the 'Caps (2-0-0) stretched their season-opening unbeaten streak to four games across all competitions.

Brian White also scored for Vancouver, firing in his first goal of the season in first-half stoppage time.

The 'Caps held 58.1 per cent possession across the match and outshot TFC 14-4, with a 5-3 advantage in on-target shots.

It was a relatively quiet night in net for Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, who made three saves to collect his fourth clean sheet across all competitions. Vancouver has yet to concede a goal in 2026.

Toronto's newest marquee player Josh Sargent was not in the lineup. The 26-year-old American striker signed with the club as a designated player earlier this week, bringing an end to his contentious time with Norwich City.

The Whitecaps took control of the game early, maintaining possession as TFC applied pressure and attempted to strip the home side of the ball through the midfield.

Toronto's aggression backfired in the 24th minute when centre back Walker Zimmerman tripped midfielder Aziel Jackson as he steamed into the penalty area. Referee Fotis Bazakos quickly pointed at the penalty spot.

The announced crowd of 24,533 rose to its feet as Muller stepped up to take the kick. The 36-year-old attacking midfielder stutter stepped in place, took a few long, slow strides toward the ball and sent a right-footed shot swinging into the bottom-left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

He added to the tally in the 37th minute, directing in a corner kick from the top of the six-yard box to give Vancouver a 2-0 lead.

Muller now has 11 goals across all competitions since joining the 'Caps in mid-August.

Vancouver took a 3-0 lead into the locker room when White capitalized off another corner.

Sebastian Berhalter floated the ball into traffic, where it bounced off the shins of a Toronto defender. White took advantage, sending an unbalanced kick in past TFC 'keeper Luka Gavran for his first goal of the season.

The tally marked the American striker's 80th goal for the Whitecaps, giving him sole possession of second place on the club's all-time scoring list behind Domenic Mobilio (170).

Toronto nearly got on the board in the 55th minute when Djordje Mihailovic sent a shot in past Takaoka, only to see the offside flag raised.

The visitors registered their first shot of the night in the 67th minute when Daniel Salloi's right-footed shot sailed wide of the post.

They peppered Takaoka late in the game, including a shot off the foot of Jose Cifuentes that tested Takaoka in the 75th minute. The 'keeper dove and got a touch on the ball to preserve the shutout.

NOTES

Senegalese striker Cheikh Sabaly made his debut for Vancouver, coming on for Jackson in the 71st minute. … The Whitecaps were without forward Emmanuel Sabbi who was serving a one-game suspension for a bad tackle in last week's 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake. … Toronto has not beat Vancouver on the road in league play since March 2017.

UP NEXT

TFC: Visits FC Cincinnati on Sunday, March 8.

The Canucks, who dropped their fifth straight, got a goal from Liam Ohgren. Kevin Lankinen made 20 stops but has now allowed 15 goals over his last three starts.

Stephenson scored on a rebound with 9:40 remaining in the first period to make it 2-0. Adam Larsson recorded his 200th career assist on the goal.

Ohgren's slap shot beat Daccord at 8:28 of the second period to cut the lead 2-1.

Beniers scored a power-play goal to make it 4-1 with 8:04 remaining in the third period. WASHINGTON (AP) — Immanuel Quickley had 27 points and 11 assists to lift the Toronto Raptors to a 134-125 victory over the Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

Brandon Ingram added 24 points for the Raptors, who rebounded from back-to-back home losses to Western Conference contenders Oklahoma and San Antonio earlier in the week. Toronto is in fifth place in the East, now three games clear of the play-in group.

Will Riley scored 19 points for Washington, which lost its fourth straight game after beating Indiana twice in a row coming out of the All-Star break.

The Wizards remain without newly acquired Anthony Davis (finger) and Trae Young (knee, quad), and seven-footer Alex Sarr (hamstring) didn't play either. Collin Murray-Boyles (thumb) did not play for Toronto.

Washington led by three in the middle of the third quarter before an 11-2 Toronto run capped by Ingram's 3-pointer. The Raptors were up 98-92 after three and pushed the lead into double digits early in the fourth.

All five Toronto starters scored at least 18 points. Canadian RJ Barrett contributed 21, and Scottie Barnes scored 18 and Jakob Poeltl had 18 with 10 rebounds.

Bilal Coulibaly and Kyshawn George scored 14 points each for the Wizards. Washington shot 16-of-34 from 3-point range, but Toronto countered by going 42-of-63 inside the arc.

Washington signed former Maryland standout Julian Reese to a two-way contract earlier Saturday. He was not active.

The Wizards lost despite a 64-26 advantage in bench scoring.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jonathan Bamba scored in the first half, and the Chicago Fire scored twice in stoppage time to secure a 3-0 win over CF Montréal in their home opener on Saturday.

Chicago (1-1) controlled the match throughout, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime after Bamba finished from the center of the box in the 27th minute. The Fire generated steady pressure and limited Montréal's chances despite playing the final 34 minutes a man down following a red card to Jonathan Dean in the 56th minute.

The Fire secured the match in stoppage time as Hugo Cuypers converted a penalty in the 90th minute to make it 2-0, and Robin Lod added a third moments later with a finish from close range.

Chicago dominated the attacking numbers, finishing with an 18-4 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in on-target shots while producing 4.0 expected goals. Montréal (0-2) managed just 0.1 expected goals and rarely threatened.

Goalkeeper Chris Brady made two saves for the shutout, while Thomas Gillier kept the visitors within reach for much of the afternoon with seven saves.

The win extended Chicago's unbeaten streak against Canadian opponents to six matches dating to 2024 and marked the Fire's first victory of the season after opening with a road loss at Houston.

MONTREAL (AP) Cole Caufield scored two first-period goals to help propel the Montreal Canadiens to a 6-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

Mike Matheson and Kirby Dach scored goals in the second period for Montreal, which has recorded at least a point in seven consecutive games (5-0-2).

Nick Suzuki and Jake Evans added empty-net goals in the third and Suzuki had two assists. Jakub Dobes made 27 saves as he improved his record to 9-0-2 over his last 11 games.

Caufield now has a team-high 35 goals this season. It took all of 30 seconds for the Canadiens to find the back of the net, marking the fastest game-opening goal scored by Montreal this season. Jakob Chychrun's point shot was blocked by Caufield, resulting in a breakaway for the forward. His snap shot beat Charlie Lindgren to the glove side.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals, who had their three-game win streak snapped. The Capitals captain has scored 44 goals and recorded 76 points in just 63 career matchups against the Canadiens.

Lindgren stopped 19 shots in his first start since Jan. 29.

Washington failed to capitalize four power-play opportunities.

The Bell Centre remains a tough stop for visiting teams as Montreal improved to 10-3-1 in its last 14 home games.

Capitals: Host the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday night.

TORONTO (AP) Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens each scored twice and the Ottawa Senators beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Saturday night.

Thomas Chabot also scored, Cozens added an assist and Linus Ullmark made 21 saves.

Morgan Rielly and William Nylander scored for Toronto in its third straight loss.

Rielly got the scoring started less than three minutes into the first period, but it was all Senators from there. Ottawa had the next 19 shots on goal and scored three straight to take a two-goal lead midway through the second period.

Nylander cut it to 3-2, but Batherson struck back with his second of the period less than two minutes later on a play Toronto unsuccessfully challenged for offside.

Cozens scored his second goal on the ensuing penalty, chasing goalie Joseph Woll after 23 saves on 28 shots. Anthony Stolarz stopped all 12 shots he faced.

The Maple Leafs' frustrations boiled over early in the third period in the form of a brawl in front of Stolarz, which resulted in 28 penalty minutes, including a 10-minute misconduct to Toronto's Max Domi.

Senators: At Edmonton on Tuesday night.

Maple Leafs: Host Philadelphia on Monday night.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Shakir Mukhamadullin broke a tie midway through the third period and the San Jose Sharks snapped a five-game winless streak by beating the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 on Saturday.

Mukhamadullin beat Connor Ingram with a slap shot from the point with 10:39 to play to give the Sharks their first victory since Jan. 27 at Vancouver. San Jose had been 0-4-1 since then, starting when the Sharks blew a 3-0 lead in the third period to Edmonton before losing in overtime.

Olympic star Macklin Celebrini opened the scoring for San Jose as he got the best of his matchup against his linemate from Canada in the Olympics, Connor McDavid.

Michael Misa, Barclay Goodrow and Alexander Wennberg also scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 20 saves.

Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, Trent Frederic and Jake Walman scored for Edmonton, while McDavid chipped in with three assists to give him an NHL-leading 103 points on the season.

Ingram made 28 saves.

The Oilers tied it wice in the opening eight minutes of the third period with Frederic making it 3-3 off a good feed from Matt Savoie early in the period and Walman answering a goal from Alexander Wennberg to tie it at 4.

But Mukhamadullin's goal gave San Jose the win.

The Sharks controlled the play for most of the first period and built a 3-1 lead with help from a major miscue Ingram midway through the period. He left his net to retrieve his lost stick after the puck cleared his zone. But San Jose got possession and Celebrini fired the puck into an open net for the first goal of the game.

The Oilers got back within one goal in the second period when they capped a long shift in the offensive zone with a one-timer by Bouchard off a feed from McDavid.

Oilers: Host Ottawa on Tuesday night.

Sharks: Host Winnipeg on Sunday.

Winnipeg Jets must deal with two significant injuries to their forwards as they attempt to get back into the playoff race in the Western Conference.

Centre Vladislav Namestnikov is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury suffered during Friday's loss to the Anaheim Ducks while winger Nino Niederreiter recently had surgery on his lower-body injury and is also considered week-to-week.

Namestnikov, 33, has seven goals and six assists over 57 games this season. Niederreiter, 33, has eight goals and 11 assists over 55 games.

Star forward Mark Scheifele missed Saturday's practice due to maintenance, but appears ready to play Sunday against the San Jose Sharks in California.

{allcanada} Ski cross star Howden back on top of the podium with World Cup win

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Meet Filmora 11, a creative video editing experience all on one platform to make and share stories.

KOPAONIK — After recent disappointments at the Milan Cortina Olympics and on the World Cup circuit, Canadian ski cross star Reece Howden returned his familiar perch on the top of the podium.

Howden, from Chilliwack, B.C., skied to victory at a World Cup event Saturday, rebounding from a frustrating Friday race in which was the only skier to cross the finish line but was disqualified for a line deviation.

He dedicated his win to teammate Kevin Drury, who was injured in a crash Friday resulting from Howden making contact with Germany's Florian Wilmsmann.

"Today wasn't about me, it's about Kevin Drury," Howden said. "I'm pretty broke up by what happened yesterday.

"I would have loved to spend more time skiing with Kevin Drury. I feel so honoured to have been a teammate with Kevin, shared the podium with him, travelled the world, and got to learn from a guy like that."

Toronto's Drury, 37, finished second in Friday's race but was injured in the pileup that also took out Wilmsmann and eventual winner Tim Hronek.

After the race, Drury wrote on Instagram that it was "not the way I wanted my career to end, but I'll take the podium."

The post included a photo of Drury lying in bed with his lower leg heavily bandaged and elevated. He has said that his 10th World Cup season will also be his last.

"Whether it's stuff outside of skiing, when it comes to personal life and relationships, Kevin Drury has been a huge role model for me," Howden said.

"Today I wasn't doing it for me, I was doing it for him. So when we're up there and we're singing O Canada, don't be singing O Canada for me, sing O Canada for Kevin Drury."

Howden finished ahead of Wilmsmann and France's Youri Duplessis Kergomard in Saturday's race to pick up his record 23rd World Cup men's ski cross victory.

"Ending this trip on a podium, another second place, it's superb," Wilmsmann said. "I wanted to give it all for the win, but Reece had really good speed in the last section. I made a little mistake in the last turn, and you have to ski perfectly to get him."

Howden leads the overall World Cup men's ski cross standings with 743 points, followed by Wilmsmann at 574.

He is seeking his second straight Crystal Globe as overall champion, and fourth overall.

Howden is coming off a frustrating experience at the Winter Games, where he was tabbed as a gold-medal hopeful but failed to advance out of the men's ski cross quarterfinals.

After his elimination he ripped off his race bib and heavily criticized the slow conditions at Livigno Snow Park.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Chris Kreider beat Connor Hellebuyck off a rebound at 4:47 of overtime to give the Anaheim Ducks a 5-4 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night.

Beckett Sennecke kept the puck and shot on a two-on-one break, with Kreider backhanding the loose puck in at the side of the net.

After Leo Carlsson, Pavel Mintyukov and Ryan Poehling scored third-period goals to give Anaheim a 4-3 lead, Winnipeg's Kyle Connor tied it with 1:22 left and Hellebuyck off for an extra attacker.

Hellebuyck made 35 saves in his first game since backstopping the United States to Olympic gold.

Jacob Trouba also scored for Anaheim, Sennecke had three assists and Lukas Dostal made 29 saves. The Ducks have won seven in a row at home and 11 of 13 overall.

Anaheim won two nights after returning from the break to beat Edmonton at home for coach Joel Quenneville's 1,000th NHL victory. The Ducks have five games left on a nine-game homestand.

Winnipeg rookie defenseman Elias Salomonsson had his first NHL goal and Alex Iafallo and Gabriel Vilardi also scored. Well back in the race for a playoff spot, Winnipeg has a game left on three-game trip before an eight-game homestand.

Jets: At San Jose on Sunday.

{allcanada} Macklin Celebrini's father on gold-medal loss: 'It's fuel'

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Meet Filmora 11, a creative video editing experience all on one platform to make and share stories.

After a stellar Olympic debut with five goals and five assists in just six games as a 19-year-old, it's safe to say Macklin Celebrini will probably be among those representing Canada in the French Alps in 2030.

However, the end goal for Celebrini and Team Canada fell short after they lost to the U.S.A in the gold-medal game 2-1 in overtime.

Macklin Celebrini's father, Rick, who's the director of sports medicine for the Golden State Warriors, believes the gut-wrenching loss will add extra motivation to take home gold in four years.

"He was inconsolable after the game, he was upset, he was upset at himself, he was upset at the results," said Rick Celebrini at a Warriors press conference on Friday." I think that, with a lot of athletes, it's fuel, and I really do think it's a motivator for him. I'm sure it's a long way to be thinking about it, but four years from now that will be part of additional motivation to prepare, to be ready and to hopefully influence a different outcome."

Macklin Celebrini wowed all hockey fans on the international stage with his performance in the tournament, earning a nod to the Olympic all-star team and finishing second among all players in scoring behind teammate Connor McDavid and his record 13 points.

His play in the gold-medal game was exceptional, too, with him logging six shots on net.

But while the gold medal is missing from the trophy case, Celebrini's father thinks he should be happy with the effort the Canadians put in.

"He was almost competitive to a fault and probably loses perspective in the moment, but I think at this point he can look back and be proud of his team and himself and to say that they put their best foot forward and played their butts off and lost to a better team that day," said Rick Celebrini.

The Olympic stage is not the only place Macklin Celebrini has been dominating, as the young phenom has his San Jose Sharks just five points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference on the back of his fourth-most 81 points.

{allcanada} Canada’s Drury injured in ski cross crash, still takes silver

--

Meet Filmora 11, a creative video editing experience all on one platform to make and share stories.

KOPAONIK — Kevin Drury's ski cross career ended in a pileup — and on the podium.

The Canadian freestyle veteran was injured in a violent crash in the men's big final at a World Cup stop Friday but was still awarded second place.

Contact at the front of the pack sent several racers tumbling, with Drury, from Toronto, caught in the wreckage. The extent of his injury was not immediately known.

Drury and Germany's Florian Wilmsmann were ruled tied in the heat after the crash, with qualification results used as the tiebreaker. Drury had qualified third to Wilmsmann's 11th, giving the Canadian silver.

Germany's Tim Hronek won his first career World Cup race after being the only skier to clear a key gate cleanly, where the crash unfolded.

After the race, Drury wrote on Instagram that it was "not the way I wanted my career to end, but I'll take the podium."

The post included a photo of the 37-year-old lying in bed with his lower leg heavily bandaged and elevated.

Hronek later dedicated the win to Drury, who had been planning to retire after this season.

"It's very sad, man," Hronek said. "He's such a nice skier."

The podium comes two months after Drury opened the season with a victory in Val Thorens — his sixth career World Cup win and first in five seasons — and marked the 20th World Cup podium of his career.

Canada's Reece Howden, the World Cup leader from Chilliwack, B.C., crossed the finish line first but was handed a yellow card for line deviation and placed fourth.

"It's feeling super weird because you had a crash and then you're first," Hronek said. "It's not how we want to race here, but I'm super happy. I was ready for today. I was passing all the rounds, and I was like on fire. The perfect day for me."

Wilmsmann had been quickest out of the gate, with Drury 0.06 seconds behind and Howden another 0.03 seconds back. As Wilmsmann challenged Howden early, the two made contact. Wilmsmann fell, taking out Hronek and Drury behind him.

Wilmsmann called it "a racing incident" and added: "We just hope Kevin is doing all right."

In the women's race, Sweden's Sandra Naeslund captured her 45th career World Cup victory. France's Jade Grillet Aubert finished second and compatriot Marielle Berger Sabbatel third. Ottawa's Hannah Schmidt was the top Canadian in fourth place.

Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman are aware that they could be on the move.

Kadri, who leads the Flames with 41 points (12 goals, 29 assists) in 57 games, said he's spoken with Calgary general manager Craig Conroy about his situation.

"We've had internal chats," Kadri said earlier this week. "Obviously those we'll keep private, but, yeah, we've had discussions and communicated. I think that's what makes it great, is having that open line of conversation and just being able to understand where everybody's at."

The 35-year-old center has a 13-team no-trade list, Sportsnet reported. He has three seasons remaining on the seven-year, $49 million deal ($7 million average annual value) he signed with the Flames on Aug. 18, 2022.

Coleman also said he's had conversations with Conroy about his future.

"That's the good thing about 'Conny,' he's lived it," Coleman said. "He's been in my shoes and guys in the room's shoes. There's a lot of mutual respect and understanding the situation on both sides. I don't think it's a lack of appreciation for anyone here, I think it's just the situation we're in."

Coleman returned for a 4-1 win against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday after having been out since Jan. 8 with an upper-body injury. He has 21 points (13 goals, eight assists) in 45 games and is tied for second on the Flames in goals, behind Matt Coronato (14).

Both players would bring significant playoff experience; Kadri won the Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, while Coleman was part of the Tampa Bay Lightning's championship teams in 2020 and 2021.

The Flames (24-27-6) are nine points behind the Seattle Kraken for the second wild card in the West.

Tyler Myers was a late scratch for the Canucks' 3-2 overtime loss against the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday for what the team called roster management purposes.

"I found out last night it may happen and then was told after the morning skate that we'd have to take him out," coach Adam Foote said Wednesday. "This is the time of year where this kind of thing comes up and you're kind of ready for it and it's just the way it is. It comes with the (NHL) Trade Deadline.
We're all aware of what could happen, so it's our job to make adjustments."

Myers is in the second season of a three-year, $9 million contract ($3 million average annual value) the 36-year-old defensemen signed June 27, 2024.

The Canucks (18-33-7) are 32nd in the League standings, and players know moves could be coming before the trade deadline.

"It's that time of year when you're in a position we are, that business decisions are going to get made for management, for players, and obviously that's what happened," said forward Evander Kane, who is in the final year of a four-year, $20.5 million contract and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. "You have to focus on what's in front of you and just go about your day. It's a short window here that we have until the trade deadline so things can happen at the drop of a hat and guys are not naive to the situation, or guys' individual situations. You're mentally prepared. You're a pro. And whether that type of talk is going on, until it actually happens, you got to do your job."

{allcanada} Myers to travel with Canucks to Seattle amid ongoing trade speculation

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers is expected to make the trip to Seattle for Saturday's game against the Kraken, according to TSN's Farhan Lalji.

This comes after Myers sat out Wednesday night against the Winnipeg Jets for trade related reasons amid ongoing trade talks. He last played on Feb. 4, prior to the Olympic break.

With a full no-move clause, Myers controls his destiny and it appears he is not interested in waiving it for a move to the Detroit Red Wings, who TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported Thursday made an offer to the Canucks this week.

"I think at this point in time, (Detroit is) not necessarily a place that Myers is looking to go, but that doesn't mean he's not going to be moved here before the deadline," TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston divulged later in the day.

"There's still lots of time, and I think he's inclined to wait to see if perhaps some other teams step up and try to make a deal with the Canucks. The Stars, for example, are a team that are known to have some interest in him, and I believe he'd like to play there if that could work out.

"Really, the onus is on the Canucks right now to come up with something to get him to waive that no-movement clause. In the meantime, it's a waiting game."

TSN's Ryan Rishaug reported Thursday the Edmonton Oilers are not among the suitors for Myers.

Myers has appeared in 57 games this season for the Canucks and has a goal with seven assists.

The 36-year-old is in his seventh season with Vancouver after joining the team as a free agent in 2019 and is currently playing on a three-year deal that carries a $3 million AAV and expires after the 2026-27 season.

The veteran blueliner's no-movement clause will convert to a 12-team no-trade list this summer.

The Canucks sit last in the NHL with an 18-33-7 record and are on track to miss the playoffs for the fifth time in the past six seasons under first-year head coach Adam Foote this year.
