TASCHEN

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired attacking midfielder/forward Aziel Jackson on loan from Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok through June 2026, the Major League Soccer club announced Friday.

The loan agreement includes an option to purchase. Jackson will officially join the club pending receipt of his international transfer certificate, work permit, and medical.

The 25-year-old from West Orange, N.J., made 11 appearances across all competitions for Bialystok, competing in the top level of Polish soccer and the UEFA Conference League.

He joined Bialystok after spending a season and a half in MLS with Columbus, helping the Crew to the Leagues Cup 2024 title.

Jackson started 14 of his 31 appearances across all competitions for the Crew, recording four goals and five assists.

He has also spent time with St. Louis and Minnesota in MLS, and played in France as a youth with the under-17 side of Toulouse FC and fourth-tier Blagnac FC.

Jackson has made one appearance for the United States men's national team as a substitute in a friendly against Slovenia in January 2024, joining Whitecaps striker Brian White on the roster.

"Aziel is a player we are very familiar with from his time in the league, and he understands the demands of MLS," Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a release. "He is a dynamic, versatile attacker who will provide another option going forward. Aziel will join the camp in Spain in the coming days, and we look forward to welcoming him into our environment."

TASCHEN

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Elks have released Canadian quarterback Tre Ford and committed to Cody Fajardo under centre for the upcoming CFL season.

The 27-year-old Ford, from Niagara Falls, Ont., started the 2025 season as the Elks' starting quarterback but lost the job to Fajardo after a 1-4 start to the season.

Fajardo, who was traded by the Alouettes to Edmonton in December 2024 after being displaced in Montreal by rising star Davis Alexander, went 6-7 for the remainder of the season and passed for 3,408 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Ford was originally selected by the club in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2022 CFL Draft.

In 60 career games with the Elks, Ford passed for 4,651 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions.

The 33-year-old Fajardo, from Brea, Calif., is entering his 11th CFL season. He was named the MVP of the 2023 Grey Cup when he led Montreal to a 28-24 win over Winnipeg.

The commitment to Fajardo comes a day after the Elks signed star receiver Austin Mack, who was a favourite target of Fajardo that season.

"We believe a fresh start is in the best interests of both Tre and the organization," Elks general manager Ed Hervey said in a release.

"This decision should not be viewed as a reflection of Tre's character or ability as a player, but rather as a strategic move aligned with our goal of building the most competitive football team possible for 2026."

Fields re-signs with Riders

REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed defensive back DaMarcus Fields to a two-year contract extension.

The native of Taylor, Texas, posted career-highs in 2025 with 57 defensive tackles, 11 special teams tackles, two interceptions and a team-leading eight pass knockdowns over 18 regular season games.

Fields added five defensive tackles and one special teams tackle in the playoffs as Saskatchewan defeated Montreal 25-17 in the Grey Cup.

Fields has played all 36 regular-season games since joining the Riders in 2024.

---

Tiger-Cats re-sign Talbert

HAMILTON — The Tiger-Cats have re-signed defensive back Destin Talbert.

The 26-year-old from Darien, Ill., has recorded 113 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, five interceptions and one defensive touchdown since joining the Ticats in 2024.

He led the team and was second in the league with 12 pass knockdowns last season.

---

Mayala is back in B.C.

VANCOUVER — The B.C. Lions have re-signed wide receiver Hergy Mayala to a one-year contract.

Mayala was originally signed to the Lions' practice roster last August after a stint with the Toronto Argonauts, where he made three receptions for 40 yards in seven appearances.

A veteran of 72 CFL games, the Montreal native was selected eighth overall by the Calgary Stampeders in 2019.

He hauled in 67 receptions for 846 yards and five touchdowns across two seasons with the Stamps.

Mayala moved to his hometown Alouettes from 2022-23, recording 40 catches for 527 yards and two majors in 20 games.

{allcanada} Catherine O’Hara Dies: Beloved ‘Schitt’s Creek’, ‘SCTV’, ‘Home Alone’ Actor Was 71

Catherine O'Hara dead

TASCHEN

Catherine O'Hara, the beloved, multi-award-winning actor, writer and comedian died today at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness. She was 71.

O'Hara launched her extraordinary career as one of the ensemble members of the star-making cast of SCTV before gaining acclaim in such films as Beetlejuice, Home Alone, A Mighty Wind and, in a full-circle embrace of her TV roots that earned her an Emmy Award, Schitt's Creek.

Deadline confirmed her passing with her reps.

O'Hara was most recently seen reprising the role of Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, as well as season two of the HBO Max critically acclaimed series The Last of Us, and in the hit comedy series The Studio from Point Grey Pictures for Apple TV. For her performances in both The Last of Us and The Studio, O'Hara earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Her film credits include lead and supporting roles in Beetlejuice, Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, After Hours, Heartburn, The Life Before This, Penelope, Away We Go, Where the Wild Things Are, A.C.O.D., The Right Kind of Wrong, Nightmare Before Christmas and many more.

O'Hara collaborated with Christopher Guest and co-writer Eugene Levy four times on the critically acclaimed mockumentary films Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration. Her performance in the latter won her the 2007 National Board of Review Award for Supporting Actress

Among her many guest appearances on TV are Six Feet Under and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Her role in the HBO's Temple Grandin earned her Primetime Emmy, Satellite, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.

She first performed with Toronto's Second City Theatre and later, with fellow alumni including Levy, created the iconic sketch comedy show SCTV. O'Hara won an Emmy Award and earned four Emmy nominations for her writing on the show.

Launching in 1976, the hugely influential SCTV would feature some of the most soon-to-be-superstar comedians of the era. In addition to O'Hara, the show also known as Second City Television, starred John Candy, Harold Ramis, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas and Martin Short. It aired from 1981-83 on NBC as SCTV Network 90.

Among O'Hara's most indelible SCTV characters were edge-of-a-breakdown lounge singer Lola Heatherton (a portmanteau of real-life performers Lola Falana and Joey Heatherton), whose fawning catchphrase "I love you! I wanna bear your children!" was enthusiastically offered to bigger-name stars, and Lorna Minnelli, a mash-up of the Judy Garland daughters Lorna Luft and Liza Minnelli.

Other notable characters included bawdy nightclub singer Dusty Towne, and Sue Bopper Simpson, the self-actualized feminist writer-performer who, along with Andrea Martin's Libby Wolfson wrote and performed the not-so-big-hit musical I'm Taking My Own Head And Screwin It On Right And No Guy's Gonna Tell Me That It Ain't. In the latter, O'Hara and Martin skillfully if lovingly mocked the Gretchen Cryer-Nancy Ford 1978 hit musical I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road.

O'Hara's celebrity parodies for SCTV included Brooke Shields, Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor, Katherine Hepburn, Morgan Fairchild and gossip columnist Rona Barrett.

Decades later, in the final two seasons of the hit CBC series, Schitt's Creek, in which she played charmingly eccentric Moira Rose, wife of Eugene Levy's Johnny Rose and mother of Daniel Levy's David and Annie Murphy's Alexis, O'Hara received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Comedy Television Series, a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, a Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, a TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Comedy, and multiple Canadian Screen Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role amongst others. O'Hara also garnered Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards in the Best Ensemble categories alongside her castmates Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy.

O'Hara is survived by her husband Bo Welch and sons Matthew and Luke, along with siblings Michael O'Hara, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Maureen Jolley, Marcus O'Hara, Tom O'Hara, Patricia Wallice.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family.

TASCHEN

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Zach Hyman scored 1:06 into overtime after Evan Bouchard tied it with 59 seconds left in regulation as the Edmonton Oilers stormed back from a three-goal deficit in the third period to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Thursday night.

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and two assists and Connor McDavid also scored and assisted on Hyman's winner for the Oilers, who trailed 3-0 after one period. Connor Ingram stopped 17 shots after a rough start.

Collin Graf, Adam Gaudette and Michael Misa had first-period goals for the Sharks. Yaroslav Askarov made 28 saves.

Edmonton began its comeback with Draisaitl's 26th goal 1:34 into the third period. McDavid's 34th goal with 3:05 left in the third made it 3-2.

Bouchard, who also had two assists, tied it at 3 when he blasted a shot from inside the blue line for his 15th goal.

The Sharks took an early lead on their first two shots of the game when Graf scored just 26 seconds into the game and Gaudette made it 2-0 1:09 later.

Macklin Celebrini's assist on Graf's goal was the 90th of his young career. At 19 years, 230 days old, he became the second-youngest player in NHL history to achieve the feat, behind only Sidney Crosby (19 years, 126 days in 2006).

Misa gave San Jose what appeared to be a commanding 3-0 lead with his second goal of the season 11:40 into the opening period.

The Sharks briefly appeared to go up 4-0 midway through the second when Barclay Goodrow slammed a rebound in past Ingram, but the goal was waived off for goalie interference.

Sharks: Visit the Flames in Calgary on Saturday.

Oilers: Host the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.

SEATTLE (AP) Shane Wright scored two goals and the Seattle Kraken extended their winning streak to three games with a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

Brandon Montour and Matty Beniers also scored for the Kraken, who scored at least five goals in back-to-back games for the first time. Seattle, which beat Washington 5-1 on Tuesday, has won four of its last five games. Joey Daccord stopped 29 shots.

Nicholas Robertson and Morgan Rielly scored for Toronto, which slipped to 0-5-1 over its past six games.

Anthony Stolarz, making his second straight start in goal after missing two months with an upper body injury, allowed a goal on the opening shot for the second consecutive game and finished with 17 saves.

Wright, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NHL draft, had the second multi-goal game of his career. He hadn't scored in his last 13 games before netting his eighth and ninth of the season.

Beniers scored 1:21 into the first period for Seattle. He has a point in five straight games and set a franchise record for 10 goals in a calendar month.

Robertson tied it at 1 with 4:58 remaining in the first on a slap shot from the top of the left circle.

Wright scored on a backhand off a rebound 6:23 into the second period, and Montour added a goal 31 seconds later to give Seattle a 3-1 lead.

After Wright's holding penalty, the Maple Leafs capitalized with a power-play goal from Rielly 6:04 into the third period to cut their deficit to 3-2.

After forcing a defensive zone turnover, Wright's wrist shot put Seattle up 4-2 at 8:32 in the third.

Jared McCann the 199th goal of his career into an empty net with 2:37 left.

TASCHEN

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Danila Yurov and Vinnie Hinostroza scored in the first period and the Minnesota Wild went on to beat the Calgary Flames 4-1 Thursday night.

Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov scored late in the third period, and Filip Gustavsson made 29 saves for the Wild, who are 5-1-1 in their past seven games.

Minnesota is tied with Tampa Bay for the second-most points in the NHL at 72. Colorado has 79 points.

Playing the only road game of their final nine contests before the Olympic break, the Flames got a third-period goal from Morgan Frost. Calgary dropped to 0-3-2 in its past five games. Devin Cooley stopped 20 shots.

Down by a pair of goals, Frost took a long outlet pass from Jonathan Huberdeau and beat Gustavsson with a low shot 5:49 into the final period.

Moments after Minnesota killed off a Quinn Hughes penalty less than three minutes later, Hughes nearly restored the Wild's two-goal lead, but he was stopped by Cooley on a breakaway.

Boldy redirected a Kaprizov pass for a power-play goal with 2:43 left to secure the win. Kaprizov added an empty-net goal.

Hughes also assisted on Boldy's goal, his seventh straight game with an assist. That tied Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter for the longest assist streak in franchise history among defensemen.

Minnesota had just three shots in the first period and scored on two.

Passing to Vladimir Tarasenko in the right circle, Yurov drove through the left circle and got the puck back for a backdoor goal less than three minutes into the game.

Minnesota has scored first 33 times this season, second-most in the league.

Hinostroza scored his first goal in 25 games midway through the period, catching a long outlet pass from Jake Middleton head high at the Calgary blue line, dropping the puck and scoring from the right circle.

Minnesota is 22-0-3 when leading after two periods.

Flames: Host San Jose on Saturday.

Wild: Visit Edmonton on Saturday.

{allcanada} Former Minnesota governor says U.S. state should 'join Canada

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TASCHEN

Former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, a vocal critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, says the state should start looking into ways to "join Canada."

The outspoken former professional wrestler turned one-term governor put forward his notion of secession in a recent interview on The SpinSisters, a new Minnesota-based podcast on politics and policy.

"How about since Trump dislikes Minnesota so bad and we're so out of control, let's join Canada," he said when asked by co-host Mary Lahammer what advice he would give current Governor Mike Walz on navigating the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

"Instead of Canada becoming the 51st state of America and lose their health care… I'd like to see Minnesota, all of us become Canadians."

He proposed a petition to leave the union and join Canada who he's sure would "be happy" to welcome the Minnesotans.

"And then all those Iowans, think of what a mess it'll be when they have to cross an international border to come up here fishing," he said of residents in the neighbouring state to the south.

Lahammer and co-host Tara Erickson both chuckled slightly at the latter, but Ventura insisted he's "serious."

"I think someone seriously should contact Canada and ask them if they're open to this."

Ventura, a former Navy SEAL who saw action in Vietnam, proceeded to admonish Trump on his lack of military experience and continued to lambaste the president throughout, often blaming him for the tension and violence in Minneapolis.

"If it weren't for President Trump, no one would be dying on the streets of Minneapolis," he said.

The hosts don't circle back on Ventura's secessionist musings during the rest of the hour-plus conversation.

The idea of individual states abandoning the American Experiment to join Canada's Confederation has come up before.

Before Trump was even elected to a second term, Democratic New York State Senator Liz Krueger proposed that the state, along with Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, should "combine and be a great new province as the southeast province of Canada."

"Basically everybody in these states are progressive Democrats," she said in an interview with news site City and State New York.

"We would fit in pretty well with the political philosophy of at least most of the Canadian elected officials."

Just before Trump's inauguration, and amid his repeated talk of Canada becoming the 51st state, Canadian Green Party Leader Elizabeth May jokingly suggested California, Oregon and Washington join Canada instead.

"Have we got a deal for you; free health care. Universal free health care. No more one-year-olds who suddenly fall off the Medicaid list and their parents are in the news because they're trying to do a GoFundMe to get their daughter to a doctor," May told reporters in Ottawa.

Meanwhile, a Leger poll last March found one in five Americans (20 per cent) say they would like their state to join Canada.

{allcanada} Global prospect Pene added to CFL national combine after stint with Patriots

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TORONTO — Wilfried Pene will be attending the CFL's national combine.

The six-foot-three, 283-pound defensive lineman was listed Thursday among the participants for the combine, which will be held in Edmonton on March 27-29. Pene, a former New England Patriot, was added to the CFL's 2026 Global list last week, making him eligible for the league's Global draft.

Pene is a native of Tours, France, who played collegiately at Virginia Tech, both as a tight end and defensive lineman. He appeared in 34 games for the Hokies, registering 73 total tackles (nine for loss) with five sacks.

In 2024, Pene recorded 33 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He joined the Patriots in 2025 as an undrafted free agent and, after attending rookie camp, signed an NFL contract with New England.

However, the Patriots were forced to release Pene after his international visa, which he obtained while playing at Virginia Tech, expired, and he wasn't able to remain in the United States.

Pene, a two-time All-New England selection in high school and in 2019, helped the St. Thomas More Prep Chancellors post a 7-1 record as a tight end and defensive lineman. He registered eight catches for 183 yards with four TDs on offence while posting 47 tackles (11 for loss), 15.5 sacks and three forced fumbles along with a blocked punt.

Eight players who were listed on the CFL Scouting Bureau's winter list of the top-20 prospects for the '26 league draft will also attend the national combine. They include East Carolina offensive lineman Darius Bell (Hamilton, No. 12), South Alabama linebacker Darius McKenzie (Ottawa, No, 13), Michigan State defensive back Devynn Cromwell (Toronto, No. 14), Louisiana Tech offensive lineman Jonathan Denis (Homestead, Fla., No. 15), Coastal Carolina offensive lineman Aamari Notice (Toronto, No. 16), North Dakota receiver Nate DeMontagnac (Mississauga, Ont., No. 18), Purdue offensive lineman Giordano Vaccaro (Winnipeg, No. 19) and Laval tight end/fullback Emeric Boutin (L'Assomption, Que., No. 20).

The CFL also announced Thursday it will hold an invitation combine on March 6 in Waterloo, Ont., on the campus of the University of Waterloo.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps are lending defender Joedrick Pupe to Belgian club Sint-Truidense V.V.

The Major League Soccer team announced the move Thursday, saying the loan will last through June and includes an option to purchase.

Vancouver picked up the 28-year-old Belgian from F.C.V. Dender in Belgium last August after the 'Caps lost centre backs Sam Adekube and Ranko Veselinovic to season-ending injuries.

Pupe arrived in Vancouver with a hamstring injury that took longer than expected to heal, and he did not play for the Whitecaps until Oct. 26 when he came off the bench in the club's playoff win over FC Dallas.

He also came in as a substitute in the MLS Cup final, where the 'Caps fell 3-1 to Inter Miami.

The Whitecaps are currently holding training camp in Marbella, Spain, and will play their first game of the year on Feb. 18 when they visit Costa Rican side C.S. Cartaginés in CONCACAF Champions Cup play.

MELBOURNE — Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil's Luisa Stefani fell 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4 to Kazakhstan's Anna Danilina and Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic in the women's doubles semifinals at the Australian Open on Thursday local time.

Dabrowski and Stefani, the fifth seeds, were ahead 3-1 in the final set before dropping the following four games.

An unforced error helped seal the next game for Dabrowski and Stefani to pull to within one. However, they were quickly put away with four straight winners from Danilina and Krunic.

Dabrowski and Stefani broke on four of their eight chances and had four aces to two double faults.

Danilina and Krunic broke on four of their six opportunities to go along with three aces and one double fault.

The seventh seeds also had 31 winners to their opponents' 27.

MONTREAL — The Colorado Avalanche will wear Quebec Nordiques jerseys tonight against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.

The look recalls the heated Canadiens-Nordiques rivalry, known as the Battle of Quebec, that played out in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The Nordiques were founded in 1972 and played in the World Hockey Association before joining the NHL in 1979.

The franchise relocated to Denver in 1995 and became the Avalanche.

Backstopped by former Canadiens goaltender Patrick Roy, Colorado won the Stanley Cup in its first season after the move.

Colorado sports an NHL-best record of 35-7-9, while Montreal is 29-17-7 and is tied for third in Atlantic Division standings.

The Edmonton Elks have signed wide receiver Austin Mack to a two-year contract, TSN's Farhan Lalji reports.

The deal, which is worth $205,000 in 2026 and $220,000 in 2027, comes after Mack was released by the Montreal Alouettes earlier this week.

"We released Austin to accommodate him and allow him to explore his options," Alouettes GM Danny Maciocia said at the time. "We appreciate the seasons he gave us in Montreal, and our lines of communication with him remain open."

Mack was due a $45,000 bonus Feb. 1 as part of a four-year deal he signed with Montreal in 2024.

Mack, 28, spent three seasons with Montreal, registering 136 catches for 1,973 yards and six TDs in 32 regular-season games. He helped the Alouettes win the '24 Grey Cup but didn't play in the club's championship loss in 2025 due to a hamstring injury.

The six-foot-one, 208-pound Mack had 48 catches for 674 yards and two touchdowns in 12 regular-season contests last season.

Mack's best season with Montreal was 2023, when he had 78 catches for 1,154 yards and four TDs and earned All-CFL honours. He appeared in just three regular-season contests in 2024 after signing with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons following the '23 campaign.

TORONTO — Mikal Bridges scored 30 points, including 19 in the third quarter, as the New York Knicks rolled past the Toronto Raptors 119-92 on Wednesday.

OG Anunoby had 26 points and a season-high six steals against his former team as New York (29-18) won its fourth straight.

Karl-Anthony Towns had eight points but 22 rebounds for the Knicks.

Scottie Barnes had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds as Toronto (29-20) saw its four-game win streak snapped.

Brandon Ingram added 27 points and six rebounds, while RJ Barrett of Mississauga, Ont., had 14 points and eight rebounds in just 24 minutes of play as he recovers from a sprained ankle.

Rookie forward Collin Murray-Boyles (thumb) returned to the Raptors lineup, getting four points and five rebounds. Centre Jakob Poeltl (lower back) remained out.

Takeaways

Knicks: Before the game, Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic said that getting offensive rebounds would be key to victory. Towns's dominance on the boards gave New York many second or third chances and helped them reel in Toronto.

Raptors: Solid defence and efficient scoring in the first half saw Toronto lead by as much as many as 12 points. But poor ball possession — the Raptors turned the ball over eight times in the third quarter — led to a 13-0 Knicks run and New York finished the third with a 12-point lead heading into the final quarter.

Key moment

Bridges scored 11 consecutive points in the final 2:36 of the third quarter as New York jumped out to a 12-point lead.

Key stat

Toronto dropped to 0-8 against the Knicks since trading Anunoby and Precious Achiuwa to New York for Barrett and Immanuel Quickley on Dec. 30, 2023.

Up next

Toronto: Visits the Orlando Magic on Friday.

New York: Hosts the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.
