{allcanada} Roughriders edge Blue Bombers in wild finish in Labour Day Classic

REGINA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders have stressed the importance of making the right play at the right time this season.

On Sunday, Tevaughn Campbell did just that.

When the Winnipeg Blue Bombers set up for a two-point conversion that could have tied the game in the final minute, Campbell leapt up and picked off the pass. The defensive back then dashed 112 yards up the field to give the Riders two points — and a 34-30 win.

"I just knew I had to jump it," Campbell said. "Then it was 'Catch it, catch it, catch it.' I think I stumbled a bit, but I just had to get into the end zone."

Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace said it would have been fine if Campbell had simply batted the pass down.

"(Campbell) is one of the fastest guys on the team, so if he catches the ball with a couple yards lead, I don't believe there's very many people who are going to catch him," he said. "But I wasn't going to say anything until I saw him cross that goal line. Incredible play by him."

The play tied the Riders franchise record for longest interception return. Bruce Bennett set the record with a 112-yard pick six in a 35-3 victory over the Calgary Stampeders on Aug. 27, 1972.

Sunday's victory in front of a sellout crowd of 34,243 at Mosaic Stadium improved Saskatchewan's record to 9-2, good for first place in the CFL's West Division, while Winnipeg dropped to 6-5 for third place in the West.

Riders QB Trevor Harris connected on 17-of-27 pass attempts for 219 yards with a touchdown, while Mario Andersson drove in two rushing majors.

Zach Collaros put up 326 passing yards for the Blue Bombers, making good on 26 of his 37 attempts with three TDs and one interception.

Saskatchewan held an eight-point lead heading into the final minute of the fourth quarter.

With the Bombers facing third and 14 from their own 36-yard line, Collaros attempted a long pass to Nic Demski. The pass fell incomplete but Riders safety Jaxon Ford was penalized for pass interference, giving the Bombers the ball on the Saskatchewan 17-yard line.

Three plays later Collaros hit Dalton Schoen on a six-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 32-30. Campbell's big play came on the ensuing conversion attempt.

The Riders took control of the contest in the fourth quarter when a disastrous offensive series by the Bombers led to a golden opportunity for Saskatchewan. After an offensive pass interference penalty against Demski, the Bombers proceeded to take two additional penalties that left them facing a second and 24 scenario from their own 17-yard line.

Winnipeg resorted to a draw play with tailback Brady Oliveira who fumbled at the 26-yard line with Saskatchewan's Jameer Thurman recovering the loose ball. Four plays later Anderson scored on a five-yard run.

The touchdown, Anderson's second of the game, was followed by a two-point conversion where Harris connected with Ajou Ajou to give the Riders a 31-17 lead with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

That costly series is one Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea wanted back.

"I think we survive that with a punt, or we convert without taking the penalties," he said. "I think it's a difficulty, but they're going to have things they say too, that they would have wanted done differently. It's a four-point game."

Winnipeg made things interesting when Collaros hit Keric Wheatfall on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 4:03 left in regulation to cut the Riders lead to 31-24.

The Riders scored a single on a third-down quick kick by Harris with 1:21 left to make the score 32-24.

The Bombers started the game strong with Oliveira scoring the game's first touchdown on the opening play of the second quarter on a five-yard run. The play was set up by a pair of long completions from Collaros to Demski, for 33 yards, and to Kevens Clercius, for 51 yards.

Clercius made a spectacular twisting grab despite tight coverage from Marcus Sayles. The reception put the Bombers on the Riders eight-yard line and Oliveira scored two plays later.

On Saskatchewan's next play, Harris fumbled deep in the Riders zone with Winnipeg linebacker Tony Jones recovering the ball on the Saskatchewan five-yard line. The Riders defence stiffened on two Winnipeg running plays with the Bombers settling on a 10-yard field goal from Castillo for a 10-0 lead.

With the Saskatchewan offence struggling, the defence came up with another big play as Malik Carney sacked Collaros on the Winnipeg seven-yard line with the tackle forcing a fumble. Carney recovered the ball on his second sack of the game and the Riders took over.

Tailback A.J. Ouellette then scampered seven yards for the touchdown, cutting Winnipeg's lead to 10-7 midway through the quarter.

Harris got the offence rolling late in the half, directing a four-play, 102-yard drive that culminated with a 69-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Nield. The major, coming with 2:36 left in the half, gave Saskatchewan a 14-10 lead.

After the Riders increased their lead to 17-10 midway through the third quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Brett Lauther, the Bombers responded with a five-play, 70-yard drive culminating with a 22-yard touchdown grab by Demski. On the drive Demski had three catches for 47 yards.

Saskatchewan answered Demski's major with a seven-play, 87-yard scoring drive. Anderson finished it with a 26-yard run around the right end, breaking a number of tackles on the way to the end zone with 22 seconds left in the third. Lauther missed the point after attempt and the Riders had a 23-17 lead.

Sunday's game was simply two good teams doing battle, Mace said.

"So inevitably, what was going to happen was adversity. We talked about that this week," the coach said. "But for us, whether the adversity hit or things were in our favour, the work shouldn't look any different, let's just focus on executing each play.

"I thought the guys did that. There was zero panic. There was no finger pointing. It was just, 'Let's get our job done.' Super proud of the guys."

UP NEXT

The teams will meet in the second game of a home-and-home series on Sept. 6 when the Bombers host the Riders in the Banjo Bowl.

{allcanada} Top prospects for Winnipeg Jets

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

1. Brad Lambert, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 30 pick in 2022 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Winnipeg (NHL): 5 GP, 0-1-1; Manitoba (AHL): 61 GP, 7-28-35

Lambert is expected to make the jump to the NHL full time this season after playing the past two seasons in the American Hockey League. The 21-year-old center is a fast, talented offensive player who will continue to work on his defensive game.

"His strength is going to be his speed and his ability to push people back," Jets director of player development Jimmy Roy said. "It's not quite [Nikolaj] Ehlers speed, but it's close and that ability to make plays off the rush and use his speed, I think this past year, he understood how to get more pucks to the net, get inside defensemen."

Lambert (6-foot-1, 173 pounds) got a taste of the NHL last season, and the Jets hope he can help fill the void left by the departure of Ehlers to the Carolina Hurricanes in free agency.

"His biggest thing to make that jump is getting stronger, physically getting stronger, from his legs to his upper body," Roy said. "I think he's done that this summer."

Projected NHL arrival: This season

2. Elias Salomonsson, D

How acquired: Selected in second round (No. 55) in 2022 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Manitoba (AHL): 53 GP, 5-22-27

Salomonsson (6-0, 172) won a championship with Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League in 2024 and had a productive first season with Manitoba of the AHL last season. The 21-year-old is a talented two-way defenseman who Winnipeg would like to see develop into a top-four role.

"The thing that I really like about his game is his ability to get back for pucks and make a good first pass," Roy said. "He's so consistent at that. When he was with the Moose (AHL) last year, you could see how much more confidence our team had when he was in the lineup, because they knew he was going to be first on pucks. Even when he went into the corner and he was second there, all those 50-50 puck battles, 80 percent of the time he was coming out of the corner with that puck. He also has tremendous skating ability."

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

3. Brayden Yager, F

How acquired: Trade with Pittsburgh Penguins on Aug. 22, 2024

2024-25 season: Moose Jaw (WHL): 21 GP, 11-19-30; Lethbridge (WHL): 33 GP, 14-38-52

Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the No. 14 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, the 20-year-old center was acquired by Winnipeg for forward Rutger McGroarty in 2024 and will play professional hockey this season after a successful junior career in the Western Hockey League, which included 82 points in 54 games last season.
Yager (5-11, 180) is and offensively skilled player who played for Canada at the World Junior Championship the past two years.

"His explosiveness and his first five steps and separation speed is tremendous," Roy said. "With a lot of players coming from junior, strength is the big thing, and playing against men and understanding that you're playing 82 games a year and how to maintain that strength throughout the year, that's going to be one of the big things for him. On the positive side, his awareness and his vision and his ability to make plays is elite."

Projected NHL arrival: 2027-28

4. Colby Barlow, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 18 pick in 2023 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Oshawa (OHL): 62 GP, 32-29-61

The 20-year-old left wing had a strong final season of junior hockey and an outstanding postseason with 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) in 21 games to help Oshawa reach the Ontario Hockey League Final.

Barlow (6-0, 190) had 40 goals in 50 games with Owen Sound of the OHL in 2023-24 and scored at least 30 goals in each of his four OHL seasons.

"He has such a strong ability to shoot the puck," Roy said. "It's an NHL shot already and now he has to understand how he can get that off quicker and in less time against better goalies and better players. I think that's going to be one of the things he's going to have to work on."

Projected NHL arrival: 2027-28

5. Nikita Chibrikov, F

How acquired: Selected in second round (No. 50) in 2021 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Winnipeg (NHL): 4 GP, 2-1-3; Manitoba (AHL): 30 GP, 7-11-18

The 22-year-old right wing had his season cut short with a lower-body injury sustained Jan. 20. A talented offensive player, Chibrikov (5-10, 170) is healthy heading into this season and could challenge for an NHL roster spot in training camp.

"He's a highly skilled player," Roy said. "The one thing that's unique about him is the will he has to want to play in the NHL and how badly he wants it. When he turns the puck over, he works his butt off to get it back. He can play in the high-traffic areas as a small, skilled guy, he's not one of those perimeter players that looks to make plays, he gets on the inside, he goes to the net. He's stocky, he's strong on his skates and he plays with some edge too, which is really nice."

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

{allcanada} 3 questions facing Winnipeg Jets

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

1. How will the Jets make up for the loss of Nikolaj Ehlers?

The departure of Ehlers as a free agent to the Carolina Hurricanes has opened the door for some of Winnipeg's young offensive forwards to make an impact. Cole Perfetti, 23, had a strong third full NHL season with 50 points (18 goals, 32 assists) in 82 games, and forwards Brad Lambert, 21, and Nikita Chibrikov, 22, each will have an opportunity to make the team out of training camp.

If those players are able to produce, it will help mitigate the loss of Ehlers, who had 520 points (225 goals, 295 assists) in 674 games with Winnipeg over the past 10 seasons, including eight seasons with at least 20 goals. Winnipeg was tied for third in the NHL with 275 goals scored and should still have plenty of offensive power, but some new names on the score sheet would be welcomed by the Jets.

2. What impact will Jonathan Toews have?

A three-time Stanley Cup Champion with the Chicago Blackhawks and two-time Olympic gold-medal winner with Canada, Toews undoubtably brings a winning pedigree to Winnipeg. The question for the veteran of 1,067 NHL regular-season games and 137 Stanley Cup Playoff games is how much he has left in the tank, particularly after not playing the past two seasons due to illness.

Having Toews around the dressing room will be beneficial to a team desperate to replicate its regular-season success in the playoffs. If he can also help the Jets by being a strong supporting member to a talented core and chip in offensively, they should be able to take another step forward this season.

3. Can Connor Hellebuyck put together another MVP season and carry it into the playoffs?

Hellebuyck won the Vezina Trophy as the top goalie in the NHL as well as the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP after going 47-12-3 with a 2.00 goals-against average, .925 save percentage and eight shutouts in 63 games (62 starts) in the regular season. But he was again unable to translate that to the postseason, going 6-7 with a 3.08 GAA and .866 save percentage in 13 playoff games.

Winnipeg's success will rely largely on Hellebuyck when it matters. He is 322-185-44 in the regular season in his career but just 24-34 in 58 postseason games. In his 10 NHL seasons, he has won four playoff series and only advanced past the second round once.

{allcanada} Inside look at Winnipeg Jets

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Winnipeg Jets have gotten serious and hope the addition of center Jonathan Toews brings them closer to the Stanley Cup this season.

The 37-year-old Winnipeg native, nicknamed Captain Serious, returns home after not playing in the NHL the past two seasons, signing a one-year contract July 1.

"The first thing is that it's exciting to hear that he feels he's healthy and then to hear that he wants to play, that was an exciting moment there," general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said July 4. "I can't tell you it was smooth sailing to try to get him back (to Winnipeg) -- there were lots of teams that threw their hats in the ring -- but we were confident that we would be someone that he would want to play for."

Toews missed the entire 2020-21 season with Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and battled the effects of long COVID-19 in 2022-23, last playing with the Chicago Blackhawks on April 13, 2023.

"There was a little while where I didn't want to give too much thought to hockey and tried to get it off my mind," Toews said July 4, "but as I got closer and started thinking I can play again, it was hard to see myself wearing any other jersey."

Winnipeg (56-22-4) won the Presidents' Trophy for having the best record in the NHL last season before losing to the Dallas Stars in six games in the Western Conference Second Round.

The Jets believe adding Toews, who helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015, can help take aim at their first Cup title.

"With elite athletes they hold themselves to a different standard and they are wired differently both mentally and physically," Cheveldayoff said. "I don't know that it's a gamble; it's certainly an opportunity. In this game here, athletes that do hold themselves to a different level of accountability, they can do great things."

Toews has 883 points (372 goals, 511 assists) in 1,067 regular-season games and 119 points (45 goals, 74 assists) in 137 Stanley Cup Playoff games through 15 NHL seasons, all with Chicago. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2010 and was voted one of the NHL's 100 Greatest Players at the League's Centennial celebration in 2017, but he has not played an NHL game in more than two years.

"I'm going to try my best to be honest and realistic with myself on what the challenges are," Toews said. "I think a couple of years ago, I missed the shortened season before I went back to Chicago. In a way, since I hit the ice and [have] really been skating a lot these last couple of months, I didn't feel like that much time had gone by.

"I know it's a long time on paper if you're playing hockey. Lots of things change in the League and teams are different, the game is different and all that, but for myself, it all went by in a blink of an eye."

Toews will help make up for the loss of forward Nikolaj Ehlers, who signed a six-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 3.

Winnipeg also signed forward Gustav Nyquist to a one-year contract to boost its offense. The 35-year-old had 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) in 79 games with the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild last season and is a five-time 20-goal scorer.

Forward Tanner Pearson (6-foot-1, 207 pounds) is another new addition, signing a one-year contract, and will bring size and strength to the lineup. The 33-year-old had 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists) in 78 games for the Vegas Golden Knights last season and won the Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings in 2014.

"Pearson is a guy that won a Cup and Nyquist is an experienced guy that two years ago had 75 points, so there's some offensive hopefully to replace [Ehlers]," Jets coach Scott Arniel said. "With the other guys, there's size, there's speed, there's heavy character, physical kind of guys. That's kind of where we were looking with that kind of group coming in."

Toews, Nyquist and Pearson join a talented Winnipeg forward group, including Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Gabriel Vilardi, Nino Niederreiter, Adam Lowry, Vladislav Namestnikov, Cole Perfetti and Alex Iafallo.

"I think day by day this is becoming more real, and it will as we get closer to the season, too," Toews said. "I'm looking forward to it, it's an exciting time and it's another fresh opportunity."

{allcanada} Canada's Auger-Aliassime stuns Zverev, advances to fourth round of US Open

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEW YORK — Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal promised fans he was "getting closer" after a recent rash of disappointing showings.

After taking down the world's third-ranked Alexander Zverev of Germany in Saturday's third round of the U.S. Open, he wagged his finger at Louis Armstrong Stadium to indicate he's not going anywhere but up at the Grand Slam in the Big Apple.

"This one feels very good," the 25-year-old smiling Canadian said moments after the milestone victory, which marked the first time he had beaten a player ranked in the top five at a major.

"I've worked very hard to get here, but the job is still not done. But this one feels so great."

Auger-Aliassime defeated Zverev 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-4 in three hours, 49 minutes to move on to the fourth round and a Monday date with Andrey Rublev of Russia.

Canada's Felix Auger Aliassime catches a break off the top of the net for set point during his third-round matchup against Alexander Zverev at the US Open.

Auger-Aliassime dominated on winners with 50 compared to Zverev's 29. The Canadian had more unforced errors (35-31) and double faults (8-5), and fewer aces (12-10).

But the tide in the match changed in the third set and by the time the players reached the fourth set Zverev appeared to run out of ways to solve his 25th-seeded rival.

Auger-Aliassime won 78 per cent of his first and second serves. He won three of six break points and 14 per cent of the return games.

Earlier Saturday, Canadian Denis Shapovalov was ousted from the U.S. Open following a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 third-round loss to top-ranked Jannik Sinner of Italy.

Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime takes match point against Germany's Alexander Zverev to cap off the upset during the third round of the US Open.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native leapt out to a 5-2 lead until Sinner stormed back to knot things up at 5-5 before the 27th-seeded Shapovalov took the opening set.

In the second set, Shapovalov held a 3-2 edge before Sinner won four of the next five games to even up the match at one set apiece.

Shapovalov again jumped out to an early lead, this time 3-0, in the third set. However, Sinner went on to win the next six games to put the Canadian on his heels.

In the fourth and final set, it was Sinner who grabbed some early momentum, taking a 4-1 lead to eventually close out the match.

Shapovalov had 15 aces to nine double faults and converted three of his six breakpoint opportunities. However, he had 47 unforced errors to Sinner's 36.

Sinner, meanwhile, had just two aces and five double faults while breaking on six of 13 chances.

In women's doubles action, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., alongside American tennis legend Venus Williams, marched through to the third round with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 win over Japan's Eri Hozumi and Norway's Ulrikke Eikeri.

Fernandez and Williams broke on four of their seven chances, won 79 per cent of their first-serve points and fired 29 winners to their opponents' 19.

The duo will next face the winner between Great Britain's Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal and Shuai Zhang and Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova.

{allcanada} TFC scores late goal for draw that ends CF Montreal's playoff hopes

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TORONTO - It was a chaotic game with a wild ending, full of the passion that often fuels derby games between Toronto FC and CF Montreal.

Played against the loud, neon backdrop of the Canadian National Exhibition, it was anything but pretty.

But when the dust settled on the 1-1 draw Saturday, Montreal (5-15-9) had been eliminated from MLS playoff contention. Toronto (5-13-10) survived but will face a similar fate all too soon.

Jonathan Osorio's 89th-minute goal off a rebound negated Dante Sealy's 83rd-minute header, making for a finale that grew even more frenetic as Toronto's Jules-Anthony Vilsaint, playing against his old team, and Montreal debutant Ivan Jaime both hit the woodwork in stoppage time.

"Probably I didn't feel it as much going into the game but about 15 minutes in, I was like 'Yup, this is a Toronto-Montreal game,'" said Toronto coach Robin Fraser. "Not a whole lot of elaborate tactics as much as it was emotion, hard work, determination.

"I don't think the game was ever going to be a beautiful game, given the rivalry. And it really became a war of attrition. It was a fitting game for Toronto-Montreal."

Montreal saw its playoff hopes end despite extending its unbeaten run in MLS play to five games (2-0-3). It was the fourth straight draw for Toronto.

A loss to Montreal, coupled with a Red Bulls victory over Columbus, would have ended TFC's playoff hopes.

Sealy's goal came off a free kick on the edge of the penalty box by substitute Bryce Duke, with Toronto's defence left wanting. But Osorio rescued Toronto with his 68th career goal for TFC in all competitions, hammering home a rebound off Vilsaint's shot after Thomas Gillier made the initial save.

Toronto 'keeper Sean Johnson had made a fine save in the 81st minute to stop Prince Owusu's header and preserve the tie, albeit it briefly.

The derby game drew a lively announced crowd of 27,076 at BMO Field.

Montreal had more of the ball as the first half wore on but failed to take advantage. TFC outshot Montreal 17-11 on the night (5-2 in shots on target).

Visiting Toronto thumped 10-men Montreal 6-1 when they met May 17 in one of TFC's few highlights this season. But Montreal won via a penalty shootout when the teams met April 30 at BMO Field in the preliminary round of the Telus Canadian Championship.

Both teams have made plenty of changes since their last meeting. And the two sides, while bitter rivals, have plenty of connections these days.

Prince Owusu, a former Toronto player, captained Montreal with TFC alumni Matty Longstaff and Luca Petrasso also starting. Owusu and Petrasso were both booked in the first half, which saw yellow cards shown to three Montreal players and one from Toronto.

Djordje Mihailovic, Toronto's new designated player who spent the 2021 and '22 seasons with Montreal, started his fourth game for TFC.

Ecuador international midfielder Jose Cifuentes, on loan from Glasgow Rangers, made his first appearance for Toronto in the 74th minute. Toronto forward Deandre Kerr also came in for his 100th appearance for the club across all competitions.

TFC came on in the second half and appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty in the 54th minute when Johnson found Mihailovic behind the defence with a fine clearance from goal. Polish defender Dawid Bugaj and Mihailovic both went down in the Montreal penalty box but referee Drew Fischer waved play to continue.

Video review had a long look at a play minutes later when Osorio went down in the box. Again play continued without sanction.

The two rivals went into weekend play with 12th-place Toronto one point ahead of 13th-place Montreal in the Eastern Conference. The Red Bulls, who tied Columbus 0-0, went into weekend play occupying the final playoff spot in the East, 15 points above TFC.

TFC has not made the playoffs since 2020. Montreal reached the post-season last year for the first time since 2022 but lost a penalty shootout to Atlanta United in a wild-card match.

Montreal was missing the injured Fabian Herbers, Jalen Neal, Sam Piette and Giacomo Vrioni.

Toronto was without five defenders — long-term casualties Nicksoen Gomis, Henry Wingo and Zane Monlouis, plus Sigurd Rosted, who went down in training Friday, and Raoul Petretta, who was unwell.

That forced Laryea, normally a fullback/wingback, to play centre back alongside veteran Kevin Long. Laryea was a storming presence all night, both in defence and attack.

UP NEXT

With the September FIFA international window looming, both teams are off until Sept. 13 when Montreal hosts St. Louis City and Toronto visits the New England Revolution.

{allcanada} Canada's Shapovalov falls to Sinner at US Open, Fernandez-Williams advance

Canada's Denis Shapovalov was ousted from the U.S. Open following a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 third-round loss to top-ranked Jannik Sinner of Italy on Saturday.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native leapt out to a 5-2 lead until Sinner stormed back to knot things up at 5-5 before the 27th-seeded Shapovalov took the opening set.

In the second, Shapovalov held a 3-2 edge before Sinner won four of the next five games to even up the match at one set apiece.

Shapovalov had 15 aces to nine double faults and converted three of his six break-point opportunities. However, he had 47 unforced errors to Sinner's 36.

Sinner, meanwhile, had just two aces and five double faults while breaking on six of 13 chances.

In women's doubles action, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., alongside tennis legend Venus Williams, marched through to the third round with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 win over Japan's Eri Hozumi and Norway's Ulrikke Eikeri.

Later Saturday, Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime was scheduled to face third-seeded Alexander Zverev in third-round action.

NEW YORK — Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez reached the third round of women's doubles at the U.S. Open by defeating Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi 7-6 (1), 6-1 on Saturday.

Williams and Fernandez fell behind early, like they did in the first round, before rallying and finding their rhythm. The 45-year-old American and 22-year-old Canadian had never played together until this week, when they received a wild-card entry into the field.

"We have a few secrets," Williams said. "I was telling her a few things, but, yeah, I guess we forgot we got down. We were focused on winning the match. The score doesn't matter. All that matters is you keep putting it in and keep being the one to win the point, and then here you are at the end."

Williams, a 14-time Grand Slam women's doubles champion with sister Serena, got to again do her signature twirl-and-wave in front of an adoring crowd at Flushing Meadows. During the match, she even encouraged fans to get on their feet.

"I actually have never done that," Williams said. "But we were down, so we wanted the energy that you guys bring. We needed that."

Williams had been off the tour for 16 months until returning to action by playing singles and doubles at Washington in July.

In singles at the U.S. Open, she pushed 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova to three sets Monday in the first round before bowing out.

Fernandez, who reached the singles final at the U.S. Open in 2021, called Williams an inspiration who has kept her motivated.

"It was a lot of fun," Fernandez said. "I love Venus. She kept asking me how am I feeling between changeovers, and I was like: 'I'm feeling good, I'm excited.'"

The Edmonton Elks have signed defensive lineman Richard Jibunor.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound defender was selected by the Elks in the first round (third overall) in the 2025 CFL Global Draft in April.

The linebacker/edge player spent four seasons at Troy University from 2020-2023 where the product of Delta State, Nigeria suited up for 50 games with the Trojans. At Troy, Jibunor recorded 174 total tackles, 46 tackles-for-loss, 30 sacks, three interceptions, and forced nine fumbles. Jibunor's accolades include being named to the All-Sun Belt Third Team every season from 2020-2022, while being named to the All-Sun Belt First Team in 2023.

The 26-year-old  finished his college career with the fourth most tackles-for-loss (46) and sacks (30) in Troy Trojans history. Prior to his transfer to Troy, Jibunor was a four star recruit by the Auburn University Tigers, where he recorded eight tackles and two sacks as a freshman.

Jibunor would go unselected in the 2024 NFL Draft, but would accept an invite to Seattle Seahawks Rookie Camp in 2024.

{allcanada} Sabalenka eliminates Canada's Fernandez from singles in straight sets at US Open

NEW YORK — Leylah Fernandez's singles run at the U.S. Open is done.

The Laval, Que., athlete was beaten 6-3, 7-6 (2) by the world's No. 1-ranked player Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus on Friday night in a third-round match that took one hour, 37 minutes to finish.

Despite having more unforced errors (18-12) and double faults (4-3) than the 31st-seeded Fernandez, Sabalenka had more winners (25-22) and more aces (6-5).

Sabalenka saved all five break points she faced and won one of three break points. Fernandez went 0-for-5 on trying to win break points, which was her undoing in the second set.

Sabalenka won 56 service points and 11 service games, while Fernandez won 39 service points and nine service games.

Sabalenka advances to the round of 16 and will face Cristina Bucsa of Moldova on Sunday.

Fernandez will be back on the court Saturday with women's doubles partner Venus Williams. The wild-card pairing will play Eri Hozumi of Japan and Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway.

Fernandez advanced to the third round with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Elsa Jacquemot of France on Wednesday.

Fernandez and Williams upset the sixth-seeded pairing of Lyudmyla Kicheno of Ukraine and Ellen Perez of Australia 7-6 (4), 6-3 in Thursday's opening round.

{allcanada} Hyman on being ready for start of season: 'I don't know'

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman had a tough end to his 2024-25 campaign.

The 33-year-old winger had just come off his most impactful game of the playoffs, recording two goals and three points with a plus-5 rating in the team's 6-1 win over the Dallas Stars in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead in the series.

But Hyman's season would end early in Game 4 after a collision with then-Stars forward Mason Marchment dislocated his wrist, knocking him out of the remainder of the playoffs.

Hyman had surgery in May and after three months of recovery, he's still unsure if he'll be ready for the start of the 2025-26 regular season on Oct. 8.

"Will I be ready for the start of the season? I don't know. But I'm on the right track, which is good." Hyman told reporters at Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp in Calgary on Thursday. "The fact that I don't know is a good thing because it could be, 'No I'm not.' [I] have one more meeting with the surgeon to wrap it up, which is great."

The Oilers went on to defeat the Stars in five games as they returned to the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year and set up a rematch with the Florida Panthers.

Florida proved to be too much for the Oilers in the final, taking the victory in six games to become back-to-back champions.

Hyman had been a key part of Edmonton's success the past two seasons, recording a career-high 54 goals in 2023-24 and followed it up with 27 goals and 44 points last year while supporting star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the top two lines.

The Toronto native added five goals and 11 points in 15 playoff games before he was sidelined. He said the idea of not being able to help his team in the final was something he struggled with mentally.

"It was miserable," said Hyman. "It's very horrible, very hard. No matter what, you're stressed, whether you're up or down. You have no control and you're helpless. At the same time, you're trying to keep it all together and be supportive for the guys who are playing.

"So, when I wasn't around them I was a stress case, and when I was, I just tried to be an emotional support system, [an] anchor for those guys."

Hyman's statistical success over the past two seasons and his ability to keep up and contribute while paired with some of the best players in the game throughout his career has put him on Canada's radar for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Italy, despite not being fully recovered from his injury.

He was also considered for Canada's roster for last year's 4 Nations Face-Off but didn't crack the team after a slow start to his season.

Hyman is using that as motivation for when he gets back on the ice this season to try to wear his country's colours on the biggest stage in international hockey.

"I'd say watching was more motivation than not making the team because it's more real," said Hyman. "I remember watching with our [Oilers] teammates and cheering for Connor [McDavid] on, and you want to be there, you want to be in those moments, you want to be on the greatest stage. It was disappointing, obviously, and I'll do everything I can to make this one."

{allcanada} Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime advances to third round of US Open

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

It's been a perfect run at the US Open for Canada's top men's tennis player so far.

No. 25 Felix Auger-Aliassime took down Russia's Roman Safiullin 6-1, 7-6, 7-6 in straight sets on Thursday night to advance to the third round of the US Open.

The win marks a second straight-set victory for the Montreal native, who had some Canadian fans in attendance cheering him on between points and ahead of serves.

Though he came away with the straight-set win, it was hardly a walk in the park for Auger-Aliassime, as he had to fight off six set points in the second set to come away with the victory and hold off a swing of momentum.

Auger-Aliassime dominated on the serve, losing the advantage for the first time in the third set, and made sure not to make that mistake again.

However, Saffiulin kept it tight, losing serve but managing to steady the ship and send the third set to a tiebreak. But Auger-Aliassime pulled through on the serve yet again, putting through one of his 13 aces and then ending the match on an unreturnable serve to Saffiulin's backhand.

With the win, Auger-Aliassime joins fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the third round. He's slated to face No. 3 Alexander Zverev of Germany on Saturday.

{allcanada} Canada's Shapovalov makes US Open third round; Fernandez, Venus Williams win in doubles

--

Denis Shapovalov advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open with an entertaining and error-filled 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over France's Valentin Royer on Thursday.

Shapovalov picked up his sixth break on match point in a contest where both players struggled to hold serve.

The 27th-seeded Canadian fired 29 aces but hit into 43 unforced errors, two more than Royer, in a match that took three hours 36 minutes to complete despite lasting just four sets.

Later Thursday, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., teamed with tennis legend Venus Williams to defeat sixth-seeds Ellen Perez of Australia and Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine 7-6 (4), 6-3 to open women's doubles play.

Canada's Leylah Fernandez and teammate Venus Williams defeated Ellen Perez and Lyudmyla Kichenok during the first round of US Open doubles action in two sets 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Fernandez and Williams, the 45-year-old seven-time Grand Slam winner who recently returned to action, were given a wild card into the tournament on Wednesday.

They completed the upset when Fernandez served to love in the final game and will next face Japan's Eri Hozumi and Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway.

Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand's Erin Routliffe were also victorious in women's doubles action, defeating Czechia's Miriam Skoch and Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-0. The third-seeded duo will next face Quinn Gleason of the United States and Ingrid Martins of Brazil.

Felix Auger-Aliassime was also a winner, advancing to the third round in men's singles action. The Montreal native defeated Russian Roman Safiullin 6-1, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) in the night session.

The 25th-seeded Auger-Aliassime is set to face third-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany next.

Meanwhile, Montreal's Gabriel Diallo fell to Spain's Jaume Munar 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round.

The 31st-seeded Diallo entered the match leading the career series 2-0, including a win at last year's U.S. Open. It's the first time Diallo played in a Grand Slam event as a seeded player.

Royer had broken Shapovalov early in the first three sets and looked set to do so again in the fourth game of the fourth set. But the 26-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., saved five break points before completing the hold.

Shapovalov finally went ahead in the set when he broke to love, with Royer double-faulting on game point, to take a 4-3 lead.

And after a hold, Shapovalov broke again when Royer clipped the net on match point, to the delight of the pro-Canadian crowd in attendance at Court 7.

Shapovalov will have his work cut out for him if he wants to progress further. He is drawn to face defending champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy in the third round.

Shapovalov twice fought back from being down a break in the first set, forcing a tiebreaker with Royer serving for the set.

Royer led 6-5 in the tiebreaker before Shapovalov took three straight points, winning with a forehand on set point. After the set-winning point, he cupped his ear and nodded, getting a loud response from the crowd.

Royer again scored the first break in the second set to go up 4-2, and this time he didn't relinquish the lead. Shapovalov's attempted comeback ended in the ninth game when Royer won on his third set point.

Both men had trouble keeping serve to start the third set, with the first three games resulting in breaks, including a break to love by Royer to go up 2-1.

Shapovalov broke again in the sixth game to tie the set 3-3.  He then had a chance to win the set on return, but Royer saved three set points en route to creating a 5-5 with a hold. Shapovalov had a short but animated argument with the chair umpire after losing his first set point.

Shapovalov finally took the set on his fifth set point, taking the tiebreaker 7-4 with a wicked cross-court backhand.
