OTTAWA - Relief washed over the Ottawa Redblacks Thursday night as they finally snapped a four-game losing streak with a convincing 31-11 win over the Calgary Stampeders.

The win, the first this season at home, not only delivered crucial points, but a much-needed dose of confidence.

"I think everybody knew what we had going on coming off the bye week," said Ottawa receiver Justin Hardy, who had four receptions and two touchdowns. "The first phase of the season didn't go as planned.

"We just wanted to flush that, come out and get started 1-0 and we prepared that way and came out with a win."

Complete 60-minute efforts have been few and far between this season, but the Redblacks (2-6) benefited from some solid defence and capitalized when needed.

Dru Brown was solid in the first half, going 13-of-19 passing for 174 yards and two touchdowns. However, he struggled in the second getting picked off once and sacked twice to finish 19 for 27 for 275 yards.

"I think at times we executed very well and we moved the ball at will," said Brown. "When we're doing that, everyone's doing their job."

The Stampeders (5-3), playing without starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., dropped their second straight.

Head coach Dave Dickenson felt his team had a number of self-inflicted mistakes that forced the team to play from behind.

"We didn't take advantage of our scoring opportunities early and that hurts," he said. "We started to play from behind, and then we started turning the ball over and that hurt. Then we're even more behind and we started taking a lot of penalties … credit to Ottawa, they beat us."

P.J. Walker got his first CFL start under centre and went 30-of-57 passing for 273 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

"You can't win games having three turnovers, let's start with that," said Walker. "I've just got to play better the next time I get the opportunity to go out there and play."

Ottawa had its best first half of the season, with the defence limiting Calgary to just three points and Brown finding Hardy for a pair of touchdowns. An 18-yard field goal from Lewis Ward gave the Redblacks a 17-3 lead at the half.

Calgary's defence rallied in the third quarter picking Brown off once and sacking him twice.

Walker didn't fare much better with Alijah McGhee picking him off and running the ball back 61 yards to make it 24-4 early in the fourth.

"That was just a bad read by me," admitted Walker. "I should have just plugged the inside guy."

Walker redeemed himself shortly after with a 29-yard TD pass to  Dominique Rhymes to make it 24-11.

Pinned deep in their own end late in the game, Calgary gambled on third-and-10 and came up short, turning the ball over on downs. Ottawa wasted no time capitalizing, as Dustin Crum punched in a one-yard touchdown on the very next play making it 31-11.

Calgary settled for a single after Rene Paredes missed a 31-yard field goal attempt early in the second half.

Redblacks head coach Bob Dyce gave full credit to his team's defence.

"That was a hell of a performance by those guys," shared Dyce. "Three points at the half, I think they scored a touchdown the second half. Those guys made plays every single time they had an opportunity."

Dyce has been preaching the need to maximize opportunities in critical situations and felt his team finally did that and were rewarded for their efforts.

Now the challenge will be to build off it as they face the division rival Toronto Argonauts next Saturday.

{allcanada} Mboko rallies to beat Bouzkova to move to fourth round of National Bank Open

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MONTREAL - Victoria Mboko's magical run at the National Bank Open will continue into the weekend.

The 18-year-old from Toronto earned a third-round win over world No. 39 Marie Bouzkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 on Thursday night at IGA Stadium. Mboko overcame a one-set deficit, the first set she dropped all tournament, to defeat the Czech native in front of a loud and raucous crowd.

"There were so many people today," said Mboko. "It was a very difficult match, I feel like, mentally and physically for me.

"I'm just really happy to have come out with the win and felt really great coming off the court with the tennis I was able to produce towards the end of the match."

The last of nine Canadians remaining in the WTA 1000 main draw, Mboko collected her sixth win against a top-50 player.

Mboko will next play top-seeded American Coco Gauff, who defeated Russian Veronika Kudermetova in three sets earlier Thursday, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Gauff and Mboko will meet for the second time this season at a WTA 1000 tournament. The American got the better of Mboko in a second-round three-set battle on the clay courts in Rome in May.

"I'm really excited for it," said Mboko. "She's the No. 1 seed of this tournament. I've played her before and I know what I'm going to expect. I'm going to really expect a hard fight."

Gauff also expects a tough battle this time around against a new and improved Mboko.

"She's a great player," said Gauff. "We played on clay, so it will be a different match. Obviously, she's gotten more experience just being on tour and playing high-level players. It's going to be a tough match."

Bouzkova came out strong, breaking Mboko in her opening two service games to take a 3-0 lead.

Mboko got one of those breaks back the following game to cut the deficit to 3-1, but a trio of double faults in the fifth game gave the Czech her two-break cushion right back.

Bouzkova broke Mboko for the fourth time to take the opening set 6-1 in just 29 minutes.

"In the first set, of course, it was a very shaky start for me," said Mboko. "It felt like one of those days where you couldn't really understand what was going on, and you feel very off. Nothing is really working in your favour."

After a few moments spent in the locker room, Mboko returned to the court with a vengeance.

Mboko immediately broke her rival in the opening game of the second set, a break of serve she consolidated thanks to a fortuitous bounce off the net cord that landed fair. However, Mboko's second service game with three double faults in the match leveled the set at 2-2.

But it didn't faze Mboko, who got the break back, thanks to a double fault by her opponent.

She broke again in the ninth game to take the set 6-3.

Mboko said she shifted her mindset after that opening set, focusing particularly on her overall mobility on the court.

"In the second set, I wanted to make sure my movement was at least twice as better than it was in the first set, and my concentration as well," said Mboko. "I feel like I wasn't really as focused as I wanted to be.

"I wasn't very sharp with my movement and how I was kind of moving on the court laterally, front and back and side to side."

Bouzkova was forced to take a medical timeout after the second set with an apparent right thigh injury. Mboko took full advantage, breaking three times on her way to a 6-0 third-set.

In other results, Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, seeded 24th, came from behind to beat 15th seed Daria Kasatkina, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Centre Court. Mirra Andreeva, the fourth seed, was bounced prematurely, falling to American McCartney Kessler in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The No. 8 seed, American Emma Navarro, also suffered a disappointing loss to the 30th seed Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine, 7-5, 6-4. Ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan ousted Romania's Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 7-6 (5) in the late match.

The tournament continues through until the finals on Aug. 7.

TORONTO - The CFL has fined Saskatchewan defensive back Tevaughn Campbell for a high hit on Edmonton Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo.

Campbell smashed into a sliding Fajardo early in the fourth quarter of Saskatchewan's 21-18 win over the visiting Elks last week.

Campbell was given a 15-yard roughing-the-passer penalty that survived a challenge by Saskatchewan.

Fajardo finished out the game and threw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

The CFL doesn't disclose the amount of player fines.

Saskatchewan (6-1) visits the Montreal Alouettes (5-2) on Saturday when the Edmonton (1-5) is at home to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-2).

{allcanada} Samberg signs 3-year, $17.25 million contract with Jets, avoids arbitration

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Dylan Samberg signed a three-year, $17.25 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $5.75 million.

The 26-year-old defenseman, who was a restricted free agent, avoided a scheduled salary arbitration hearing. He had 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 60 regular-season games last season to help the Jets (56-22-4) win the Presidents' Trophy, given to the team with the best regular-season record in the NHL, and three assists in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"I'm very excited to be back with this group," Samberg said Thursday. "As we showed last season during the regular season, (we were) the best team. I think along with some of our new additions this year, it'll be good. With adding 'Schenner' (defenseman Luke Schenn) last year, I think he was another important piece for us, with being another voice to hear from, he's had a lot of experience, won Stanley Cups, so that was huge.

"We have a good group here. Everyone is very close, and I'm really excited to get back and get to work."

Samberg missed 21 games with a lower-body injury sustained after blocking a shot from Steven Stamkos in the second period of a 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators on Nov. 23. A second-round pick (No. 43) by Winnipeg in the 2017 NHL Draft, he has 51 points (nine goals, 42 assists) in 216 regular-season games and three assists in 23 playoff games.

The Jets re-signed all three of their RFAs who filed for arbitration July 5, according to the NHL Players' Association. Morgan Barron signed a two-year, $3.7 million contract ($1.85 million AAV) on July 14, and Gabriel Vilardi signed a six-year, $45 million contract ($7.5 million AAV) July 18.

"I'm obviously very excited about it," Samberg said. "Excited to be back in Winnipeg for three years. There's some nerves that go into it, especially as you get down to the deadline (before arbitration), but I'm glad we were able to agree to a deal and get things moving forward."

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nicholas Robertson is the lone RFA out of the 11 who remains without a contract. Hearings are scheduled to be held through Aug. 4 (dates were not announced). A player can sign a contract with his current team anytime before his hearing.

{allcanada} Fritz beats rain, Carballes Baena, to advance in Toronto

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Second-seeded Taylor Fritz struggled with three rain delays and a stubborn Spanish opponent on Wednesday, pulling out a tight 7-5, 7-6 (7/1) win over Roberto Carballes Baena at the ATP Toronto Masters.

The second-round match was halted repeatedly by light rain, with the final 18-minute pause coming just as the second-set tiebreaker was about to start.

But Fritz, winner of Stuttgart and Eastbourne titles this season, quickly sprinted to victory before heavier rains were expected to set in.

The American was far from pleased with a win which was marred by 45 unforced errors and confessed that he has not yet felt on his game in Canada.

"Even in practice I'm having a hard time putting the ball into the court," he said. "But I'm happy to get through this one.

"Everything is not feeling great, it's tough to control the ball.

"Since I've been here it's been absolutely brutal. But I have another match to figure it out and hopefully I can play myself into the tournament."

Fritz's fourth-seeded compatriot Ben Shelton had no complaints after earning his first career win over gritty Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3.

Shelton had dropped two prior meetings with 37-year-old qualifier Mannarino but said he was able to vary his serve to get over the line this time.

"This win was huge for me. He's a shotmaker, he can take the racquet out of your hands," Shelton said. "I've played well against him in the past and come up short, he can make things really difficult."

- Tiafoe hangs on -

American Frances Tiafoe squeezed out a win after more than two and a quarter hours against Japan's Yosuke Watanuki, hailing his opponent's fighting spirit after a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5) triumph.

"He can hit a winner on any shot," Tiafoe said. "I needed some luck in those last two sets to win."

Tiafoe managed just 19 winners to the 45 of his 158th-ranked foe, but now lines up against Australian Alexsandar Vukic, who defeated Briton Cam Norrie 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3.

Andrey Rublev, runner-up in Canada a year ago to Alexei Popyrin, won his 250th career match on hardcourt as he beat France's Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3.

The sixth seed needed four match points to advance after 86 minutes and now plays Italian Lorenzo Sonego, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over China's Bu Yunchaokete.

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Flavio Cobolli of Italy delivered four aces in the final game of a rain-interrupted match to clinch a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Canadian Alexis Galarneau.

But Canadian Gabriel Diallo came out on top against his Italian opponent, beating Matteo Gigante 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) to next face Fritz.

Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime suffered another early disappointment, losing his opening match in his home Masters for a third straight year as he fell to Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 6-4.

Former top 10 ranking regular Stefanos Tsitsipas, now 30th in the world, continued a downward slide with a 6-4. 4-6, 6-2 loss to  Australian Christopher O'Connell.

Alex de Minaur, winner in Washington on Sunday, defeated Francisco Comesana 6-4, 6-2.

"It was not pretty by any means," Australia's de Minaur said. "The wind and rain made it quite tough. I'm happy I was engaged and focused from the first point to the last.

"Backing up a good week is the toughest ask in tennis. You don't have a lot of time to enjoy the moment after a week of emotional highs.

"You have to find a way to re-set and do it all over again."

{allcanada} Jets sign Toews for leadership, add Nyquist, Pearson for depth

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

2024-25 season: 56-22-4, first in Central Division; lost in Western Conference Second Round

Key arrivals

Jonathan Toews, F: The 37-year-old returns for a 17th NHL season after stepping away from hockey following the 2022-23 season because of health issues, including Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and the effects of long COVID-19. A three-time Stanley Cup champion (2010, 2013, 2015) and former captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, for whom he played from 2007-23, Toews signed a one-year contract with his hometown team on June 20. … Gustav Nyquist, F: The 35-year-old signed a one-year contract July 2 and will help bolster the top six following the loss of Nikolaj Ehlers in free agency. Nyquist had 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) in 79 games for the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild last season but an NHL career-high 75 points (23 goals, 52 assists in 81 games) two seasons ago, when Nashville utilized him in a role similar to how Winnipeg plans to deploy him. … Tanner Pearson, F: The 30-year-old signed a one-year contract July 1 after he had 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists) in 78 games for the Vegas Golden Knights. Pearson could find a role in Winnipeg's middle six. The need there will be magnified. Jets captain and center Adam Lowry is expected to miss the start of the season after having hip surgery May 27, with a 5-6 month timeline for recovery.

Key departures

Nikolaj Ehlers, F: The 29-year-old signed a six-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 3 after he had 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists) in 69 games last season and seven points (five goals, two assists) in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games. Ehlers had 520 points (225 goals, 295 assists) in 674 games through 10 seasons with the Jets. … Mason Appleton, F: The 29-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on July 2. He had 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 71 games last season, his lowest points-per-game average (0.31) since he became a full-time NHL player in 2020-21. … Brandon Tanev, F: The 33-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Utah Mammoth on July 1. He had 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 79 games for the Seattle Kraken and Jets last season, and no points in 13 playoff games.

On the cusp

Nikita Chibrikov, F: The 22-year-old had three points (two goals, one assist) in four games of spot duty with the Jets last season and 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 30 games for Manitoba of the American Hockey League. He is expected to be in the mix to make the jump and become an NHL regular. … Brad Lambert, F: The 21-year-old had 90 points (28 goals, 62 assists) in 125 games the past two AHL seasons. The No. 30 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft will use his speed and high offensive instincts to push for a roster spot. … Elias Salomonsson, D: Just 17 games into his first season in North America, the 20-year-old was selected to represent Manitoba at the 2025 AHL All-Star Classic. The 6-foot-2 playmaker had 27 points (five goals, 22 assists) in 53 AHL games last season and could make the Jets roster during training camp.

What they still need

Scoring and forward depth. Consider the subtraction of Ehlers' near point-per-game production, Lowry's hip rehab keeping him out until, at earliest, the end of October, and Toews' last pro game coming more than 800 days ago. The Jets need their new blood to make an immediate impact. Forward Cole Perfetti is coming off his most productive NHL season with 50 points (18 goals, 32 assists) in 82 games. Winnipeg could pair the 23-year-old (222 NHL games) with two seasoned veterans in Nyquist (863) and Toews (1,067) with the hope that the upward trajectory in Perfetti's offensive production continues entering his fourth full NHL season.

They said it

"We've talked about free agency. Sometimes it's tough for us in this market. … Last year, we really looked at our depth and a lot of it was on our back end. And that became important right out of training camp with our defense. This year it kind of flipped the other way, we went heavy with our forwards. There's a lot of similarities to these guys. There is size and speed, heavy character, physicality, physical kinds of guys. That is kind of where we were looking with that group coming in." -- coach Scott Arniel

EDGE stat to watch

The Jets ranked highly in high-danger goals (144; third) and long-range goals (29; first) last season. Winnipeg had players rank among the NHL leaders in goals from each major shot location region: Center Mark Scheifele was tied for fourth in the NHL in high-danger goals (24), forward Kyle Connor tied for fourth in midrange goals (17) and defensemen Neal Pionk and Josh Morrissey tied for fourth in long-range goals (six each). -- Troy Perlowitz

Fantasy spin

Perfetti set NHL career highs in assists, points, power-play points (15) and shots on goal (143) last season. He also averaged a career-high 15:11, compared to 13:35 in 2023-24, and should see even more ice time in his fifth season, especially on the power play after the departure of Ehlers. Another offensive option is Toews, who has not played in the NHL since 2022-23 but has bounce-back potential with the reigning Presidents' Trophy winners. -- Chris Meaney

Projected lineup

Kyle Connor -- Mark Scheifele -- Gabriel Vilardi

Gustav Nyquist -- Jonathan Toews -- Cole Perfetti

Nino Niederreiter -- Adam Lowry -- Vladislav Namestnikov

Alex Iafallo -- Morgan Barron -- Tanner Pearson

Josh Morrissey -- Dylan DeMelo

Dylan Samberg -- Neal Pionk

Haydn Fleury -- Luke Schenn

{allcanada} Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime upset at National Bank Open

TORONTO — Felix Auger-Aliassime has been upset at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers, and his run for a national title lasted just one hour and 41 minutes.

"It's tough," the 24-year-old from Montreal said, when it was over.

On Wednesday night in front of a packed centre court crowd at Sobeys Stadium, Auger-Aliassime lost his first match here, a 6-4, 6-4 decision to world No. 56 Fabian Marozsan.

Canada's top-ranked man, the tournament's 21st seed, is out.

"Obviously playing in Canada, it's more disappointing," Auger-Aliassime said. "You feel like, okay, you want to play as many matches as possible. When you lose in an opening match, it's tough. I've been there obviously before in my career, but it never feels better. So it's not easy."

Wednesday marked the third straight year Auger-Aliassime has lost his first match at his national open.

The world No. 28 was playing in his first match since he lost in the round of 64 at Wimbledon. On the men's side, only Gabriel Diallo is left among Canadians in the NBO draw after a two-set victory earlier Wednesday.

Like Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov lost his opening round match here a night before.

It started off well for Auger-Aliassime, who went up an early break to take a 2-0 lead in the first set. He started the second set the same way, and was broken right back.

It was a windy night on centre court, and the Canadian struggled with his serve — he had five double faults and two aces. "I wasn't serving great," he said. "He just did a little bit better than I did at dealing with that, for sure."

Auger-Aliassime didn't feel like nerves were getting to him, and certainly in the early goings he looked calm and in control, dominating the first two games.

"There's always nerves, but how you're going to deal with that in the first few games — I thought I did pretty well," he said. "Then after, it's a game of him adjusting, me adjusting to him, and kind of finding the better compromise. At times he played like there was no wind. He played high-risk tennis and it paid off. Maybe I was a bit too conservative.

"That's one take, but if I had to play the match again, I don't know if I would do much differently. Sometimes he was just too good."

Fans broke out in "Let's go Felix, let's go!" cheers, urging the Canadian to rally back. When he faced a second break point in the second set, the crowd cheered loudly. Auger-Aliassime rushed the net, and Marozsan made an incredible shot to win the point.

Auger-Aliassime's best finish at the NBO was the quarter-finals in 2022.

When his 2025 edition was over not long after it began, he packed his bags and left the court, with a small wave and a clap for fans.

"That's the challenge of the sport," Auger-Aliassime said. "You can try your best — today I was trying my best on every point, and it's not enough."

{allcanada} Canada's Bouchard ends career with hard-fought loss at National Bank Open

Eugenie Bouchard waved goodbye to professional tennis with a hard-fought loss Wednesday night.

The 31-year-old from Westmount, Que., electrified the home crowd, but bowed out to 17th seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the National Bank Open's second round after announcing the tournament would be her last.

Bouchard had extended her Montreal run with a first-round upset Monday night against Emiliana Arango — her first WTA Tour victory since 2023 — and showed flashes of the aggressive game that once powered her rise to world No. 5 in 2014.

The local favourite turned back the clock again Wednesday by rallying from down a set, but Bencic held on to win the match in two hours 16 minutes.

Montrealers packed the centre court stands at IGA Stadium, chanted "Let's Go Genie!" and grew louder throughout the warm summer night, standing up for several ovations.

"It's so special to play my last match here in Montreal, on this court, in front of you guys," Bouchard said during an on-court ceremony after the match, wiping tears from her eyes. "I remember being a little kid, sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I would play on this court one day.

"It feels like such a full circle moment to finish my career here."

After winning the second set, Bouchard went up a break early in the third, taking a back-and-forth third game when Bencic sent her shot into the net on the Canadian's fifth break-point opportunity.

Bencic, however, regrouped and broke back to tie at 3-3 in an error-filled game for Bouchard.

Trailing 5-4 and needing to hold serve, Bouchard fell in a 40-love hole and sent her backhand wide while defending the second match point.

"Tennis has given me so much, I am filled with so much gratitude for this sport and all the people who helped me along the way," Bouchard said before turning to her parents and siblings in attendance. "I want you guys to know that when this crowd cheers for me, they're cheering for you guys too."

In a roller-coaster career, Bouchard peaked during a banner 2014 season, winning her only WTA title, reaching the Australian Open and French Open semis and becoming the first Canadian woman to play in a Grand Slam final in the open era at Wimbledon.

But Bouchard's rapid rise also quickly came falling down after her 6-3, 6-0 loss to Petra Kvitova at the All England Club.

Bouchard receives touching tribute, standing ovation after final match

Her highly anticipated homecoming one month later ended abruptly with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 loss against American qualifier Shelby Rogers at the then-called Rogers Cup. And the following year, Bouchard crashed out of the French Open and Wimbledon first rounds as losing streaks piled up.

A run to the U.S. Open fourth round hinted at a return to form, until Bouchard suffered a concussion from slipping in the locker room — for which she later filed a lawsuit — forcing her to withdraw from the tournament.

In recent years, Bouchard has sporadically played on the pro tennis circuit, spending more time on the PPA Pickleball Tour, where she ranks 12th in singles.

She ramped up for her final event with the WTA 125 Hall of Fame Open in July — her first tournament since last year's NBO — and lost her opener in straight sets.

Bencic now holds a 4-0 head-to-head advantage over Bouchard, including a first-round win at the 2015 Rogers Cup in Toronto en route to winning the title.

The 28-year-old Bencic broke Bouchard early with a backhand winner in the third game. She then went up 5-2 with another break, with Bouchard spraying shots wide and into the net, before serving out the first set.

In the second set, Bouchard found a rhythm with her forehand ground strokes, breaking Bencic with a winner that just touched the back line to go up 5-3. She then held serve to force a third set.

Rising star Victoria Mboko is now the only Canadian remaining in the women's singles tournament. The 18-year-old from Toronto defeated 23rd seed Sofia Kenin on Tuesday and takes on Marie Bouzkova in the third round Thursday night.

{allcanada} Canada's Diallo reaches third round of men's National Bank Open

TORONTO - The National Bank Open took some body blows before the event due to some high-profile withdrawals.

The hits have kept coming since the seeded players took the court.

The two highest-seeded Canadians - No. 21 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal and No. 22 Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., - are both out after losing their opening matches at the Masters 1000 men's tournament.

Auger-Aliassime dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Hungary's Fabian Marozsan on Wednesday night, a day after Shapovalov lost his second-round match to American Learner Tien.

Montreal's Gabriel Diallo, the No. 27 seed, is the lone Canadian left in the 96-man singles draw with a full week of competition left to play.

Diallo earned a 6-3, 7-6 (5) rain-interrupted victory over Italy's Matteo Gigante in the afternoon. Wild-card entry Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Ont., dropped a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 decision to 13th-seeded Flavio Cobolli of Italy.

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner of Italy, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, No. 5 Jack Draper of Britain and No. 6 Novak Djokovic of Serbia are all skipping the US$9.19-million hardcourt event.

Germany's Alexander Zverev tops a seeding list that includes American Taylor Fritz, Italy's Lorenzo Musetti, American Ben Shelton and Denmark's Holger Rune in the top five.

Marozsan broke Auger-Aliassime's serve at 4-4 in the first set when the Canadian double-faulted. Auger-Aliassime had a triple-break opportunity early in the second set but Maroszan fought back to hold.

The Hungarian had a break point at 3-3 and delivered a brilliant lob that Auger-Aliassime couldn't chase down from the net. He closed out the match in one hour 41 minutes.

Earlier in the day, Diallo saved two set points at 2-5 before breaking back and eventually forcing a tiebreaker. Gigante took a 5-3 lead but dropped the last four points, including a double-fault on match ball.

"Tennis is sometimes pretty crazy with the momentum switches that you see throughout a match," Diallo said.

Diallo won his first ATP Tour title last month at a 250-level stop in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands.

He followed that up with a strong appearance at Wimbledon, pushing Fritz to a fifth set in a second-round loss.

Fritz could be his next opponent here if the American can get by Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena in the late match Wednesday night.

Earlier in the week, Galarneau earned his first main draw victory on the top-flight tour with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over Arthur Rinderknech of France in the first round.

"I'm really proud (of) that," said Galarneau, who's ranked 193rd in the world. "Also proud of the fight that I put up today. I thought I played pretty well, and a lot of positives that I can take away from this week."

The afternoon session was delayed for about half an hour due to showers in the northwest Toronto area.

In other second-round matches, fourth-seeded American Ben Shelton beat French qualifier Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 and sixth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev defeated Hugo Gaston of France 6-2, 6-3.

Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, the No. 28 seed, topped China's Yunchaokete Bu 6-1, 6-4 and Australia's Aleksandar Vukic upset 31st-seeded Cameron Norrie of Britain 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3.

Shapovalov withdrew from doubles competition Wednesday due to a left knee injury. He was scheduled to team with Auger-Aliassime against the American duo of Robert Galloway and Brandon Nakashima.

A replacement pairing will be named a few hours before Thursday's match, organizers said.
