{allcanada} Revolution score three times in second half, blank CF Montreal

MONTREAL - CF Montreal's struggles continued Saturday night at Stade Saputo, with the Major League Soccer team dropping its fifth straight match, a 3-0 loss against the New England Revolution.

New England (6-4-5) scored three times in the second half, taking advantage of a red card given to Montreal forward Giacomo Vrioni in the latter stages of the opening half.

"I just want to say that I'm proud of these guys, of how they fought for the entire game," said CF Montreal interim head coach Marco Donadel in an abbreviated 50-second post-game press conference. "The first half, 11 versus 11, I think that we dominated. Even at 10 versus 11, at the end of the first half and the second half. I just wanted to say that."

The Montreal bench boss refrained from taking any questions from members of the media, simply saying "I want to stay on the bench for the next games and not be disqualified." In addition, no players were made available post-game, with the team's media relations team calling it "a club decision."

Donadel and the team's frustration likely stemmed from that straight red card issued to Vrioni in the 36th minute of play for what was deemed "violent conduct" on New England defender Keegan Hughes. The former Revolution forward, who was acquired by Montreal from New England last January, and Hughes had been battling for the ball when Vrioni kicked his rival, who writhed in pain along the New England sidelines.

Up to that point, Montreal had largely controlled play, outshooting New England 8-2 through the first 45 minutes and controlling possession 61 per cent of the time. However, the club failed to capitalize on its scoring chances, most notably on a chance by Caden Clark inside the box off a Dante Sealy free kick in the 23rd minute that was ultimately blocked by Revolution defender Tanner Beason.

Montreal's Nathan Saliba (who accounted for the club's only shot on target of the half) and Vrioni also followed with chances of their own in the ensuing minutes. However, both of their attempts missed the target.

Upon their return to the pitch for the second half, New England wasted little time profiting from their man advantage.

After winning a free kick after being fouled by Montreal's Sealy, Revolution midfielder Peyton Miller accepted a cross from defender Ilay Feingold. Miller froze Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois, scoring his first career MLS goal with a left-footed deflection to the bottom right corner of the net.

The Revolution doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Feingold made a run inside the right side of the box, using his left boot to beat Sirois.

Feingold struck again in the dying minutes of the match, scoring from the right side of the box on a lateral feed from Miller in the 87th minute. All three of the Israeli international's goals this season have come in the past two games.

With the team officially at the halfway point of its 2025 MLS season, Montreal (1-11-5) has yet to win a game on home turf (0-4-3). The club remains firmly entrenched at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, with eight points accumulated out of a possible 51.

For New England, the win helped run their MLS unbeaten streak to nine games (5-0-4) dating back to April 12. It also marked the seventh straight road result for New England, tying a franchise record established in 2019.

Revolution goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic earned his seventh clean sheet of the season, helping New England improve upon its stingy defensive record since the start of this 2025 MLS campaign. The club has allowed just 14 goals through its opening 15 games, tops in the league.

PIETTE HITS 200 GAME MARK

Midfielder Samuel Piette became the first player in club history to appear in 200 career MLS games, all with Montreal. Already the franchise leader in games played, the Le Gardeur, Que. native, also paces Montreal in career starts (178) and minutes played (15,534). Saturday's match also marked the 30-year-old's 225th game across all competitions with Montreal, passing goalkeeper Evan Bush for sole possession of sixth place since the founding of the club in 1993.

CARD TROUBLE

In addition to Vrioni's red card, Montreal's Saliba and Joel Waterman were issued yellow cards. Both Saliba and Waterman entered the match on the MLS' caution accumulation warnings, meaning a single yellow card would likely result in a suspension for both players during the team's next match.

{allcanada} Toronto FC's miserable May ends with loss to visiting Charlotte

--

TORONTO - A miserable May ended in another loss for Toronto FC.

Toronto coach Robin Fraser had hoped his team could pick up points in a home-heavy month. Instead TFC went 2-5-0 in May, culminating in a disappointing 2-0 loss to Charlotte FC on Saturday.

Toronto (3-10-4) lost five of six at BMO Field in May, with the lone home win May 10 over D.C. United. And it followed the 6-1 victory May 17 at CF Montreal with home losses to Nashville, Philadelphia and Charlotte.

Fraser had asked for a response from his team after a painful 2-1 mid-week loss to Philadelphia that saw his team concede goals in the 86th and 92nd minute. He didn't get it Saturday.

"It's just disappointing that we see good and bad within each game," said Fraser, his voice still hoarse from Wednesday's post-game address to the team. "I think last time we talked about having more good and less bad. … And I felt like today we just didn't see enough (good)."

Second-half goals by Pep Biel and Patrick Agyemang lifted Charlotte to a comfortable win that left 14th-place Toronto 12 points below the playoff line at the midway point of the Major League Soccer season.

It was largely one-way traffic in the first half with Charlotte, with the wind at its back, in control on a sunny, blustery evening before an announced crowd of 19,406. The visitors outshot TFC 12-0 (4-0 in shots on target) in the first 45 minutes with Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson, celebrating his 36th birthday, once again keeping Toronto in the match.

TFC began to show signs of life in the second half, only to fall behind to Biel's 56th-minute strike. Ivory Coast attacker Wilfried Zaha started the play, finding Liel Abada on the right edge of the penalty box. The Israeli forward cut inside, drawing defenders, before feeding an unmarked Biel for a tap-in in front of goal.

Johnson continued to make big stops in the second half. But he could not stop Agyemang, on a solo run, in the 90th minute. It was the sixth goal of the season for the U.S. international.

Charlotte outshot Toronto 18-7 (9-2) in shots on target.

"We, just in a way, weren't sharp enough today," said 18-year-old Toronto defender Lazar Stefanovic, who drew the short straw in having to speak to the media after the loss.

The game marked a return for Toronto fullback Richie Laryea, out since March 1 with a hamstring injury, and former Toronto winger Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, on loan to Charlotte from CF Montreal, in his first game back at BMO Field since being traded in August 2024

Laryea came off the bench to cheers in the 77th minute, his first action since TFC's second league game of the season. And the abrasive fullback wasted no time getting in the face of Zaha and Charlotte captain Ashley Westwood.

Laryea was shown a yellow card nine minutes after coming on.

Charlotte (8-8-1) went into weekend play in ninth place, the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference — five places and nine points ahead of Toronto. Charlotte also had a poor May, going 2-6-0 in all competitions before the Toronto visit.

It was a rare road win for Charlotte, which ranked 28th in the 30-team league at 1-6-1 away from home before Saturday. Toronto's home record, now a dismal 1-7-2, ranked 29th.

Toronto brought on Derrick Etienne Jr. and Sigur Rosted to start the second half and began to show signs of life, only to fall behind soon after.

Captain Jonathan Osorio recorded Toronto's first shot, albeit off target, in the 53rd minute. And Charlotte goalkeeper David Bingham was finally called into action a minute later, coming off his line to stop Ola Brynhildsen

Toronto was coming off a painful 2-1 mid-week loss to visiting Philadelphia, which scored 86th- and 92nd-minute goals for the win.

Charlotte lost 4-2 mid-week at the New York Red Bulls after a 3-2 home win over Columbus last Saturday that snapped a five-game league losing streak.

Toronto coach Robin Fraser made four changes to the starting 11 that faced Philadelphia with Stefanovic, Kosi Thompson, Maxime Dominguez and Lorenzo Insigne slotting in. Winger Federico Bernardeschi, who like Thompson was suspended mid-week, did not dress due to a muscle strain.

Bingham, making his first league start since October 2023, replaced Kristijan Kahlina, last year's MLS Goalkeeper of the year, in the Charlotte goal. Kahlina's form has been spotty of late.

Charlotte, which joined the league in 2022, recorded its second-ever win north of the border (the first came April 12 in a 1-0 decision at CF Montreal). It is now 2-5-2 in Canada.

Saturday's victory was also Charlotte's 50th in all competitions (50-50-29).

Toronto was missing injured defenders Nicksoen Gomis, Henry Wingo and Kobe Franklin and forward Deandre Kerr.

Saturday's game was TFC's annual Indigenous Heritage Night.

It also marked the working debut of one of the four new video screens to be installed ahead of next year's World Cup — one at each corner of the stadium. The two screens at the north end are now in place but only the northwest one is working at this time.

With the FIFA international window looming, Toronto doesn't play again until June 13 at Los Angeles FC. Seven of TFC's 17 remaining games after the break are on the road.

{allcanada} Alouettes release RB Fletcher after career season in 2024

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Veteran running back Walter Fletcher and rookie Canadian quarterback Jonathan Senecal were among the Montreal Alouettes' final cuts Saturday.

Canadian Football League teams had until 10 p.m. ET on Saturday to make final roster selections. The '25 regular season kicks off Thursday night with the Ottawa Redblacks visiting the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina.

Montreal begins its season Friday night hosting the Grey Cup-champion Toronto Argonauts.

While final roster decisions had to be made Saturday, only Montreal, the Ottawa Redblacks and Saskatchewan Roughriders announced their final cuts.

The five-foot-eight, 200-pound Fletcher was entering his fifth CFL season and fourth with Montreal. Fletcher, 28, ran for a career-high 764 yards on 141 carries (5.4-yard average) and four touchdowns in 17 games — also both personal bests

He appeared in seven regular-season games in 2023 when Montreal won the Grey Cup. Fletcher signed a two-year deal with the Alouettes this off-season.

Fletcher appeared in 48 career regular-season games with Edmonton (2021) and Montreal (2022-24). The former Ball State star ran for 1,818 yards on 351 carries (5.2-yard average) and five touchdowns.

Fletcher added 145 catches for 1,388 yards and four touchdowns. He had 71 receptions for 682 yards and three TDs last season.

The Alouettes selected Senecal, the '23 Hec Crighton Trophy winner from Montreal, in the seventh round, No. 62 overall, in the '2025 CFL draft. The six-foot-one, 201-pound Senecal completed 71.5 per cent of his passes last season for 2,320 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions in eight regular-season games.

He also ran 27 times for 278 yards (10.3-yard average) with three touchdowns. In 2023, Senecal led the Carabins to a Vanier Cup title.

Montreal placed the following players on the practice roster: Defensive backs Don Callis and Robert Kennedy; offensive linemen Des Holmes, Nouredin Nouili and Ed Montilus; defensive linemen M.J. Sherman and Kori Roberson; linebacker K.D. Davis; receivers Jalen Wayne and Daniel Oladejo; defensive back Vincent Delisle; punter Joshua Sloan and kicker Joshua Hutley.

Receiver Isaac Gaillardetz, linebackers Riley MacLeod and Gabriel Lessard and defensive lineman Gabriel Maisonneuve — all Canadians — were placed on the retired list as they're returning to their respective schools.

Meanwhile the Redblacks released 21 players, including former NFL running back Jaylen Samuels. The six-foot, 225-pound American was a 2018 fifth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers (2018-2021) and also spent time with the Houston Texans (2021) and Arizona Cardinals (2022).

Samuels, 28, appeared in 42 games with Pittsburgh, rushing for 459 yards on 131 carries (3.5-yard average) and a touchdown. He added 82 receptions for 550 yards and four TDs.

Receivers Ayir Asante, Latreal Jones, Ethan Jordan and Andre Miller, running back Elijah Collins, offensive linemen Eric Miller and Isaac Moore, defensive linemen Muftah Ageli and Chase McGowan, linebacker Ayinde (Ace) Eley and defensive back King Ambers earned practice-roster spots.

Twins Jordan and Justin Herdman-Reed topped the list of 17 players released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Both were heading into their seventh CFL seasons and they'd spent three years together in Regina (2021-22, 2024).

Jordan Herdman-Reed began his CFL career with B.C. (2017-19) before his first tour of duty with Saskatchewan (2021-22). After playing for Calgary (2023), he returned to the Riders (2024).

Justin Herdman-Reed's first CFL stop was with Toronto (2017-19) before heading to the Riders (2021-24). The twins played collegiately at Simon Fraser.

The Riders added running back Mario Anderson, defensive backs Antoine Brooks Jr. and Eddie Heckard, defensive linemen Kendy Charles and Benoit Marion, offensive linemen Payton Collins and Noah Zerr, punter Joe Couch and receivers Drae McCray, D'Sean Mimbs and Joe Robustelli to the practice roster. Punter Bailey Flint was placed on the suspended list.

{allcanada} Knights eliminate Wildcats to return to Memorial Cup final

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

RIMOUSKI - The London Knights are going back to the Memorial Cup final and they're determined to redeem last year's devastating defeat.

Blake Montgomery scored the winner 3:35 into the third period to lift the Knights past the Moncton Wildcats 5-2 in the tournament's semifinal Friday. London will take on the Medicine Hat Tigers in Sunday's battle for the top prize in Canadian major junior hockey.

It's also a chance for players from last season's Knights team to redeem themselves after a 4-3 loss to the Saginaw Spirit in the 2024 final.

"We were playing for this all year to get back in that game," said forward Landon Sim. "It was the worst day of all of our lives last year, losing that final game.

"To finally get back — super, super happy."

Denver Barkey — with an assist — Sim and Jesse Nurmi also scored, while Austin Elliott made 21 saves for the Knights.

Easton Cowan had an empty-net goal and added an assist, and Jacob Julien provided two helpers.

"I thought that was our best game of the tournament so far," Cowan said. "Had a really good first, kind of laid back in the second. Then our third was definitely the best period of the tournament.

"We had everyone scoring today, lots of depth and a huge win for us."

It's a fifth Memorial Cup final appearance for London, the Ontario Hockey League champions. Only the Peterborough Petes and Kitchener Rangers have more with six apiece.

The Knights fell short of clinching a spot in this year's championship game earlier in the tournament with a 3-1 loss to the Tigers in their round-robin finale.

London has lost consecutive games only once in its past 120 games — including playoffs and Memorial Cups — dating back to March 1, 2024.

"It comes out of the consistency that we play with," Dickinson said. "Losing one game, it's going to happen. But something we say a lot is good teams don't lose two in a row. We live by that."

Caleb Desnoyers, a projected top-10 pick in this June's draft, had a goal and an assist while Dyllan Gill also scored for Moncton. Mathis Rousseau stopped 32 shots.

The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League champions, who also fell 3-2 in overtime to London in their tournament opener, beat the host Rimouski Oceanic 6-2 in the final-round robin game Wednesday to reach the semifinal.

The Knights — a powerhouse team that boasts 12 NHL draft picks, including four first-rounders — were too much to handle.

"We know we had a tough opponent on the other side, national championship semifinal," Gill said. "It's heartbreaking, and I think every guy in our room is going to have a little bit of regret and what if in their head, but ultimately super proud of the group."

Montgomery gave London a 3-2 lead early in the third when Sam Dickinson beat Moncton's Etienne Morin wide and set up the Ottawa Senators prospect, who'd snuck in behind Gill to score his first of the tournament.

"Amazing play. He's one hell of a player," Montgomery said of Dickinson. "Once I saw him going down the wall, I knew all I do was get to the net, he would find me, and sure enough, he did.

"Right in the wheelhouse."

Nurmi converted a centring feed from Julien to double the lead with 6:49 remaining.

The Wildcats jumped on a power play with 4:36 left — and eventually pulled the goalie for an extra attacker — but couldn't cut into the lead before Cowan made it 5-2 with 1:49 remaining.

While several players from last year's team returned this season, Sim said Montgomery and Nurmi are new additions who've matched the group's hunger for a Memorial Cup title.

"We got a group that's been here for a while," Sim said. "The last dance for a lot of us."

"Those guys that are new come in and see that, how bad we want it, and I think there's no other option but to want it as badly as we do."

The Knights swarmed the Wildcats in the first period and dominated the shot count 18-5 after 20 minutes, but London struggled to hold the lead — and stay out of the penalty box.

Sim opened the scoring with a wraparound 4:07 into the game.

Desnoyers later equalized on the man-advantage, ripping a wrist shot from the left circle through Elliott at 18:20.

The Knights went ahead again 5:24 into the second period when Barkey hammered a slick feed from Cowan into a gaping net.

Nurmi, however, took a slashing penalty 22 seconds later, leading to Gill's third goal of the tournament.

Moncton almost took its first lead late in the period when Gill's point shot deflected twice before bouncing off the post.

"You need a little lady luck," Wildcats head coach Gardiner MacDougall said. "There's a couple of shots from the point that, an inch this way and we have a lead. Our goal for this game was to get the lead. We played this team twice. We never had the lead.

"We showed some resilience. We've come back four different times on them, and that's not easy to do."

{allcanada} Crown presses Hart on memory gaps at London hockey trial

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LONDON, ONT. – Crown attorney Meaghan Cunningham challenged Carter Hart Friday on the numerous gaps in his memory relating to an alleged sexual assault in a downtown London hotel room on June 19, 2018, asking how he could be certain everything that happened in the room was consensual if he couldn't recall so many moments from the evening.

"You spent more time in that room doing things for which you have no memory than doing things for which you have a memory," Cunningham suggested.

"I'm not sure," Hart answered.

Hart, who was the first of five members of Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team to testify in their sexual assault trial, maintained he was certain that all of the sexual activity in the hotel room seven years ago was consensual.

"You know for sure you never felt like things were getting out of hand in that room?" Cunningham asked.

"Yes," Hart answered.

"Even though you can remember less than half of what took place in the room?" Cunningham asked.

"Yes," Hart answered.

Hart, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Alex Formenton and Callan Foote are charged with sexually assaulting a woman in McLeod's hotel room in the early morning hours of June 19, 2018. The woman is referred to as E.M. in court documents and her identity is protected by a publication ban. McLeod faces a second charge of party to the act. The players have all pleaded not guilty.

Hart's testimony came after McLeod declined the opportunity to testify in his defence.

Hart acknowledged on Friday that he was intoxicated and has significant memory gaps about the evening of June 18 and early morning of June 19, 2018.

He testified that he didn't remember all of the players who were in McLeod's hotel room, that he couldn't recall whether E.M. got dressed and then undressed during the evening, that he didn't know if he spoke to E.M. when he entered the room, that he didn't remember if he was egging on other players to have sex with E.M., and that he didn't remember how players were reacting to E.M. when she was engaged in sexual acts with some of their teammates.

A day after he testified that he "locked eyes" with one of his teammates when he was receiving oral sex, Hart also said he couldn't remember the player he made eye contact with.

Hart testified that he couldn't remember being in the hotel room when McLeod filmed a purported consent video with E.M. at 3:25 a.m. He also previously testified that the events in the room were "awkward."

Cunningham played that video on Friday, which begins with Hart being heard telling the group of players he would invite teammate Dante Fabbro saying, "I'll get Fabs, I'll get Fabs."

Two minutes later, Hart sent Fabbro a text that said, "Come to 209."

"I suggest you wouldn't be trying to get him in the room unless you felt it was fun and exciting," Cunningham said. "The guys in the room were essentially acting like they couldn't believe their luck. Here was a naked woman performing sex acts on anyone who wanted it. It wasn't shock and horror."

"I thought it was pretty cool," Hart answered.

Despite his memory issues, Hart testified he was certain that no one spit on E.M., slapped her, or degraded or laughed at her.

"I don't think anyone would have done anything to hurt her," Hart testified at one point. "I think if something happened that she didn't want, I would have put a stop to it. Other guys would have. I wouldn't have stayed in the room as long as I did."

E.M. has alleged that after she had consensual sex with McLeod, he surreptitiously invited his teammates to his room and that she was sexually assaulted for hours.

The Crown has alleged that Formenton had sex with E.M. in the bathroom, that McLeod, Hart and Dube received oral sex from the complainant, that Dube slapped E.M.'s naked buttocks, that Foote did the splits over E.M.'s head and "grazed" his genitals over her head, and that McLeod had sex with E.M. for a second time in the hotel room bathroom.

E.M. testified earlier that players were spitting on her and slapping her, and at one point, one of the players suggested she put golf balls in her vagina and asked aloud if she "could take" an entire golf club inside of her. E.M. testified she went into an autonomous state and did whatever she had to do to get out of the room safely.

Hart, who is 26, testified on Friday that following a Hockey Canada ring ceremony in London on June 18, 2018, he was out to party with his teammates and to also pursue a possible sexual encounter.

After dancing and drinking at Jack's bar, Hart left and began walking to Joe Kool's, another bar where Formenton and Robert Thomas were spending time with team coaches because both players were underage and had not been allowed to enter Jack's.

At 1:13 a.m., Hart sent a text message to a team group chat saying, "Rippers anyonr [sic]… I'm going."

Hart said no one responded to his message.

An hour later, McLeod sent the group a text at 2:10 a.m. that said, "Who is up for a 3 way quick… 209-mikey"

"I'm in," Hart answered at 2:19 a.m.

Hart testified he did not believe that was an invitation for the entire team to engage in sexual activity. He said he assumed it was "an agreed-upon plan" between McLeod and a woman.

"Why assume that?" Cunningham asked.

"Usually, most people don't send out a text if you have a person who is not agreeing to it," Hart testified.

"You're just assuming that he wouldn't make that invitation if it wasn't something she'd be interested in?" Cunningham asked.

"That's correct," Hart said.

Hart didn't know the woman's age, how drunk she might be, what she looked like or whether she was willing to have group sex, but still told McLeod he would accept his offer, Cunningham said.

"You were putting a lot of faith in your friend Mr. McLeod to set something up that was morally acceptable to you," Cunningham asked.

"Yes," Hart said.

Cunningham also asked Hart about Foote allegedly doing the splits overtop of E.M. Cunningham said that because everything going on in the hotel room was sexual and because the players had seen Foote do the splits countless times, it would make sense that he did splits while he was naked.

"From your perspective, there's nothing particularly exciting about seeing a fully clothed guy who everyone already knows can do the splits, do the splits, right?" Cunningham said. "What would be more exciting would be to see a guy with no pants on do the splits right over E.M.'s face... Don't you agree? That would be more exciting?"

"That's pretty weird," Hart said.

"Well, the whole night was weird, wasn't it?" Cunningham asked.

Hart agreed.

On Friday afternoon, Cunningham asked Hart about his participation in a group text on June 26, 2018, in which Dube wrote, "Let's not make her sound too crazy," and about Hart's text message asking the other 11 players on the group chat, "What should I say to Bully?"

Hart was referring to Hockey Canada executive Shawn Bullock.

"I was looking for clarification," Hart said. "Hockey Canada took those things really seriously."

Hart said he was aware of two players on Hockey Canada's U-17 national team who had been suspended for two years for bringing a girl to their hotel room.

"You were prepared to lie to Bully in order to not get into trouble, right?" Cunningham asked.

"Not to lie, just to make sure," Hart said. "I wasn't sure exactly what to say to him regarding just the hockey aspect of things."

"You were afraid if you told him the truth, you'd get into trouble, right?" Cunningham asked.

"That we were partying late, yes," Hart answered.

Cunningham kept pressing Hart on his messages in the group chat asking whether he had obtained specific consent for oral sex and asked E.M. whether she was okay with everything that was going on.

"I suggest that's because you had concerns about whether E.M. was actually consenting to everything that happened in that room?" Cunningham asked.

"No," Hart answered.

"She's naked in the room with 10 or so young men...The specific things that you can recall her saying in the room are, 'Somebody come f--k me' and 'If no one is going to come f--k me, I'm just going to leave.'...You believed that by saying those things, EM was essentially communicating to you that she was consenting to pretty much any sexual act with any guy in the room..." Cunningham suggested.

"I did think that it seemed like she was consenting to people," Hart said. "She was putting that offer to everybody in the room."

Cunningham reminded Hart that he previously testified that he was open to taking her up on "one of her offers."

"You'd agree with me that at the time you put your penis in her mouth, you haven't actually heard her offer oral sex, right?" Cunningham asked.

"At the time she had offered for somebody to f--k her," Hart answered.

"And putting your penis in her mouth is not f--king her, is it?" Cunnigham asked.

"No," Hart answered.

Formenton's lawyer, Daniel Brown, ended the day saying he would take the weekend to consider if his client will testify next week.

{allcanada} Canadian Victoria Mboko's French Open run halted by China's Zheng in third round

Canada's hopes of a French Open title are over.

Teenager Victoria Mboko fell 6-3, 6-4 to reigning Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng of China in the third round on Friday at Roland-Garros, making her the last of five Canadians to be eliminated in singles.

Mboko, 18, had previously won 10 consecutive sets at the second Grand Slam of the season, including three qualifying matches.

But the eighth-seeded Zheng proved too much to overcome for the Canadian in her major debut.

Afterward, Zheng was full of praise for the Canadian.

"For sure she will be one of the best players in the future," she told reporters, per the WTA Tour. "I'm 100 per cent sure because she already got the strength, the game. There is nothing more I can say. I'm just really happy to win such a great player like her. She's really young. She has big potential ... She hits the ball really hard, and then she had a great serve. She had huge power. She moves on the court really well.

Mboko, of Toronto, failed to record an ace while double-faulting three times. Meanwhile, Zheng took advantage of all four break-point opportunities she had, while Mboko converted on just two of eight.

Zheng, who won Olympic gold at Roland-Garros, will next face 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia.

Still, Mboko outlasted all four of her fellow Canadians. Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez fell in the first round, while Denis Shapovalov and Gabriel Diallo were eliminated in the second round.

Mboko currently is projected to rise to No. 89 in the world rankings, up 31 spots from before the French Open. That likely will be enough to get her into the main draw at Wimbledon next month.

Later Friday, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva fell 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 to Slovakia's Tereza Mihalíková and Great Britain's Olivia Nicholls.

Fernandez and Putintseva converted six of nine break chances but managed to save just one of six against them in the second-round women's doubles match.

Montreal's Gabriel Diallo and Great Britain's Jacob Fearnley lost in second-round men's doubles action.

The pair fell 6-2, 6-3 to second-seeded Henry Patten of Great Britain and Harri Heliovaara of Finland.

Patten and Heliovaara committed just six unforced errors to Diallo and Fearnley's 16, converted four of six break-point chances and saved both of their opponents'.

TORONTO - The CFL and its nine member clubs invested over $4.5 million into amateur football last year.

The league announced Friday that it and the nine franchises combined to donate $4,518,900 to grassroots football initiatives, projects and programs throughout Canada in 2024.

"The community involvement of the CFL, its clubs and players is something that sets us apart from other leagues," said CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston. "To be able, among all of the clubs in the league, to donate over $4.5 million is encouraging participation and exposure to the game and ultimately having kids fall in love with the sport.

"That's wonderful for a number of reasons, one of which is the game of football teaches such great skills that can be applied to life."

The CFL said it made 2,019 appearances last year, including 1,023 school visits, with players and staff spending 11,457 hours in communities and reaching more than 84,000 youth.

"Ultimately, football players become football fans," Johnston said. "We think we're going to be seeing them at the stadium cheering on their teams as well as watching at home on TV.

"It's a great strategy for us to be involved in the community, be great corporate citizens and develop new fans."

Two of the CFL's initiatives included the Women in Football Program -- which provides a platform for participants to develop skills at the professional level -- and its partnership with Blackhawk Tires that raised $40,000 through the Touchdowns for Communities, a strategy that provides funding for provincial football organizations to grow female programs across Canada.

Among the team initiatives

- The Montreal Alouettes supported 50 charitable initiatives and organizations, including amateur football and flag teams.

- The Ottawa Redblacks expanded to eight events with six to eight players attending each one to serve as guest coaches at the local minor football level.

- The Toronto Argonauts partnered with Football Toronto to create the Argos' equipment bank, a program that recertifies and safeties helmets for their entire 10-year lifespan, and loans them free of charge to high schools across the city. The club also awarded a $50,000 grant to the Ontario Women's Intercollegiate Football Association.

- The Hamilton Tiger-Cats' Play It Forward program provides Indigenous youth with opportunities centred around the game of football. The First On the Field Flag Football initiative allows youth from local schools to participate in flag football games at Hamilton Stadium.

- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers' football academy welcomed over 800 participants at no cost to develop skills and grow their football IQ. The team's Girls High School Flag Football League returned for a second season, expanding from 18 to 28 schools and over 300 participants with the franchise providing all the necessary equipment.

- The Saskatchewan Roughriders' North Sask Football Jamboree incorporates youth teams from across the province for a weekend of competition and skills development. The club's Grow the Game program involves grassroots football across Saskatchewan and introduces the game to non-traditional football communities.

- The Calgary Stampeders' rookie class hosts the Jr Stamps Camp for 500 youth at McMahon Stadium. And its Football 101 program features players travelling to school across the city during the off-season.

- The Edmonton Elks' Junior High Flag Football League included 29 girls teams and 43 boys teams in association with Metro Athletics. The league ran for five weeks, and eight teams were ultimately showcased at halftime of a preseason game.

- The B.C. Lions introduced a new women's flag program, which included two clinics for women and girls aged 12 years and older. And in association with B.C. High School Football, community coaches worked with members of the Lions coaching staff.

{allcanada} McDavid and Oilers going back to Stanley Cup Final after 6-3 win over Stars in Game 5

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

DALLAS (AP) Connor McDavid had a breakaway goal and an assist, 40-year-old Corey Perry scored again and the Edmonton Oilers are going to their second Stanley Cup Final in a row after beating the Dallas Stars 6-3 on Thursday night in Game 5 to wrap up the Western Conference final.

Edmonton scored on its first two shots, and jumped ahead 3-0 in the first 8:07 on way to eliminating the Stars in the West final for the second year in a row.

The Oilers now get another rematch, against defending Stanley Cup champion Florida after a seven-game series last June. Game 1 is Wednesday night in Edmonton.

Mattias Janmark, Jeff Skinner, Evander Kane and Kasperi Kapanen also had goals for Edmonton, the last being an empty-netter in the closing seconds. Leon Draisaitl and Jake Walman each had two assists.

Jason Robertson scored twice and Roope Hintz had a goal for the Stars, who ended their season in the West final for the third year in a row. Wyatt Johnston and Thomas Harley each had two assists.

Dallas was down 3-2 when Harley had a one-timer blocked by Mattias Ekholm, the Oilers defenseman playing for the first time this postseason. Oilers captain McDavid gathered the long ricochet well past center ice and beat goalie Casey DeSmith with 5:32 left in the second period.

DeSmith had taken over in net after starting goalie Jake Oettinger was pulled following Janmark's goal that made it 2-0 only 7:09 into the game.

Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner had 14 saves. DeSmith, who hadn't played since April 26 in Game 1 of the first round against Colorado, stopped 17 of 20 shots.

Perry scored on a power play, assisted by McDavid and Draisaitl, only 2:31 in the game. His seven goals are the most by any player age 39 or older in a single postseason, and the 2007 Stanley Cup champion with Anaheim when he was 22 is now going to his fifth Final in the past six seasons.

That was McDavid's 100th assist in 90 playoff games, the second-fastest player in NHL history to reach that mark. Wayne Gretzky had 100 assists in his first 70 playoff games, and no other player has reached the mark in fewer than 125 games.

Robertson scored a minute into the third period to get the Stars within a goal again. Kane then scored on a shot that went off the skate of Dallas defenseman Esa Lindell and past DeSmith.

Jeff Skinner, the 33-year-old forward ho has played 1,078 regular-season games over 15 years with three teams, scored his first career postseason goal. His playoff debut was in the first-round opener against Los Angeles on April 21, but he didn't play again until Thursday when the Oilers were without injured forwards Zach Hyman and Connor Brown.

{allcanada} CanMNT's David still undecided on next club

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Jonathan David is still weeks away from choosing his new destination, despite reports in Italy the 25 year-old is finalizing a deal to join Serie A champions Napoli.

Two weeks ago, TSN reported David was 2-3 weeks away from his final decision. Those close to the Ottawa, Ont. native now say David has not yet chosen his next club because he is still considering multiple offers.

While Napoli's recent interest has been well documented, David and his camp have long laid out a list of factors that will influence David's decision: contract and salary structure, David's potential role and playing time, and the club's trophy ambitions and status in European competitions.

Two weeks ago, David finished his five-year contract with Ligue 1 side Lille, finishing his time in northern France with 109 goals over 232 appearances.

In the wake of their second Serie A title in three seasons, and additional reports linking the Italian club to outgoing Manchester City talisman Kevin De Bruyne, Napoli's own ambitions certainly check plenty of David's boxes.

But as the last few years have brought a number high profile, headline-making suitors into David's orbit, David and his camp have always maintained his decision will not be impulsive. David's immediate future is the biggest story hovering over Canada's men's national team.

Not only will David's decision draw more attention to Canada's men's all-time leading scorer and the team ahead of next year's World Cup, but in the immediate term, it could affect Jesse Marsch's squad selection ahead of June's Canadian Shield invitational friendlies against Ukraine and Ivory Coast, as well as Canada's preparations for the Gold Cup that follows immediately after.

Marsch included David in Canada's preliminary Canadian Shield and Gold Cup squads, but all that is very much subject to change depending on the preseason obligations of David's new team. For example, if the new team were to be playing in this summer's FIFA Club World Cup or set for UEFA qualification playoffs or obligated to preseason tour friendlies, David's participation would be likely ruled out.

His impending decision notwithstanding, Marsch has told TSN David is keen to represent Canada this summer.

David is currently on vacation following his departure from Lille. Last weekend, while vacationing in Guadeloupe, David met with Canada's U-16 boys' team who were training for a friendly tournament.

{allcanada} Hyman loss 'extremely disappointing' for Oilers heading to Game 5 at Stars

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

DALLAS -- Zach Hyman vowed the Edmonton Oilers would be back in the Stanley Cup Final in an emotional locker room speech following their Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers a year ago.

Unfortunately for the forward, he will not be part of it if the Oilers advance to the Cup Final again. Hyman is likely out for the rest of the playoffs after sustaining an upper-body injury as the result of a collision with Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment at 9:17 of the first period of a 4-1 win in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final on Tuesday.

Hyman underwent surgery for the injury Wednesday and will not play when Edmonton tries to close out Dallas in Game 5 at American Airlines enter on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; ESPN+, ESPN, SN, TVAS, CBC), with the Oilers holding a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series.

"Obviously it's extremely disappointing to lose [Hyman], devastated for him," Edmonton captain Connor McDavid said Thursday morning. "He wants to be out there, wants to make a difference and so we'll miss him a lot."

Hyman had 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 15 games for the Oilers this postseason. He has also been a one-man wrecking ball, leading the playoffs with 111 hits, 15 short of the all-time postseason record of 126, set by Blake Coleman of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020.

"His physical presence has been very noticeable," Edmonton forward Corey Perry said. "He's a dog on a bone on the puck. He hunts the puck, gets in on the forecheck and protects the puck. There's things he does in the lineup that can't be replaced, but there are certainly guys that can come in and help fill that void."

Hyman is also a big part of the Oilers power play, which is connecting at 29 percent (11-for-38) in the playoffs.

Even the Dallas players acknowledge Hyman will be a big loss for Edmonton.

"He's a great player, he was playing very physically, which I think the defensemen noticed," Stars defenseman Thomas Harley said. "Even when he's not scoring, he'd be affecting the game that way, so I'm happy he's not playing. Obviously injuries [stink], he's a good player and when he's not on their team they're a little bit worse."

{allcanada} Hart takes the stand after Crown rests at London hockey trial

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LONDON, ONT. – Carter Hart testified Thursday morning that he asked E.M. for oral sex when he and his teammates were in Michael McLeod's hotel room during the early morning hours of June 19, 2018, because he was intoxicated, excited and single.

Hart, 26, began testifying in person in his own defence in the sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team.

Hart's testimony came after Michael McLeod declined the opportunity to testify in the case.

The court has heard testimony that McLeod sent a group text message to all of the Team Canada players at 2:10 a.m. that morning that said "Who is up for a 3 way quick… 209-mikey"

Hart testified McLeod also phoned him to invite him to his room.

"The gist was Mike was with a girl back at the hotel who wanted to have sex with some of the boys," Hart testified about the call. "I was open to sexual encounters. A single guy, I was having a good time that weekend. I was open to it."

Hart told the trial that by that point in the evening he was "probably pretty drunk," after having consumed a number of drinks of champagne, vodka sodas and beer earlier.

McLeod, Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube, and Callan Foote are accused of sexually assaulting a then-20-year-old woman in McLeod's hotel room in the early morning hours of June 19, 2018. McLeod is facing a second charge as being a party to the act. The players have all pleaded not guilty.

The woman, whose identity is protected by a publication ban and is referred to as E.M. in court documents, has alleged that after she had consensual sex with McLeod, he surreptitiously invited his teammates to his room and that she was sexually assaulted for hours.

E.M. previously testified that while she was in McLeod's room, players spit on her, slapped her hard, laughed at her, and asked if she "could take" a golf club inside her vagina.

Hart testified that his first memory of E.M. in the room was seeing her laying on the floor masturbating in front of seven players.

"She seemed to be enjoying it," Hart testified. "She seemed to be enjoying that players were watching her do that. I remember her moaning."

"How were you feeling?" Hart's lawyer, Megan Savard, asked.

"Pretty excited," Hart answered. "I'm 19 years old and there's a naked girl in the room doing these things willingly. It was something I'd never seen before."

Hart testified that E.M. then asked the players to have sex with her.

"Guys were looking at each other like, is this real?" Hart said. "It was kind of crazy. Guys were saying to each other, 'You do it,' or 'You do it.' Most of the guys in the room had girlfriends… I was single at the time… I was the one standing closest next to her so I said, 'Can I get a blowie?' meaning blow job… She said 'Yeah' or 'Sure' or something along those lines."

Hart testified that E.M. helped him pull his khaki jogger pants down and gave him oral sex for between 30 and 60 seconds.

"I remember not being able to get fully erect," he said. "I was half hard, I guess… I do remember making eye contact with somebody.  It just was like, weird."

Savard asked Hart why he would agree to a public sex act and he answered that he did not have vaginal sex with her.

"I had a lot to drink that night," he said. "I was single. I was open to taking her up on one of her offers."

Hart testified that he remembered E.M. again asking players to have sex with her and then watched Formenton hold hands with E.M. and enter the bathroom together.

At about that point, Hart testified that he sent a text message to Team Canada teammate Dante Fabbro that said, "get to 209."

"Why did you invite him?" Savard asked.

"I remember most guys had girlfriends at the time," Hart answered. "Fabs was one of the only other guys on the team at the time who was single."

Hart testified that after E.M. came out of the bathroom, she lay down on the ground again and he watched as Foote did the splits overtop of her.

"Other guys in the room said, 'Do the splits,'" Hart said. "He's a big, tall dude, super flexible. It's a pretty cool thing for him to do… I don't believe he even went into a full split."

Hart testified that Foote did not make contact with E.M. and he wore a shirt and shorts.

"I remember when he did it guys thought it was pretty funny," Hart testified. "I thought it was funny, and I was standing right next to [Foote] when it happened. I looked and saw E.M. was laughing as well."

Hart, who said he was in McLeod's hotel room for about an hour, testified that he did not see E.M. have any sexual contact with Dube or McLeod.

Hart also testified Thursday about a June 26, 2018, group chat in which 11 players talked about what to say to Hockey Canada and police investigators who were probing E.M.'s complaint of sexual assault.

"We all need to say the same thing if we get interviewed," McLeod wrote to the group at 8:09 p.m. "Can't have different stories or make anything up."

Two minutes later, Jake Bean wrote: "No, boys. Like we don't need to make anything up. No one did anything wrong. We went to that room to eat. The girl came, she wanted to have sex with all of us. No one did. She gave a few guys head, and then we got out of the room when things got too crazy."

"All we have to say is someone brought the girl back to the room," Brett Howden wrote at 8:14 p.m. "We were all in there ordering food and then this girl started begging from everyone to have sex with her. Nobody would do it. But then as time went on she gave 3 guys head. Once things started to get out of hand we all left and got her out."

Hart testified on Thursday that at the time of that group text message, he was playing with the Philadelphia Flyers and was in New Jersey doing Navy SEAL training during the NHL team's development camp.

Hart testified that he first read the chat after he returned to his hotel room in New Jersey and saw 117 new text messages on his phone. After that group chat, Hart and McLeod spoke on the phone, Hart testified.

"I wanted to confirm if it was Hockey Canada or police or both who were doing an investigation," Hart said.

Hart testified that there were as many as eight men in the hotel room when E.M. was performing sexual acts on a bedsheet on the floor.

Under cross-examination from Formenton's lawyer, Hilary Dudding, Hart testified that he never saw anyone spit on E.M., laugh at her, degrade her, or treat her disrespectfully.

"Is that something that would have stood out to you?" Dudding asked.

"If something like that would have happened, I would have stopped, I would have left…" Hart answered.

Court adjourned for the day at about 2:30 p.m. ET after Crown attorney Meaghan Cunningham asked the judge for some time to prepare before her cross-examination of Hart.

Earlier on Thursday, Cunningham advised Justice Maria Carroccia that the Crown had finished presenting its case.

On Wednesday, Cunningham had told the court that she was considering calling an additional witness to testify following retired London police sergeant Stephen Newton.

Cunningham had contemplated calling Maxime Comtois, a former member of the 2018 Canadian world junior team who played this season in the KHL, a source familiar with the matter told TSN.

Comtois has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing in the case.
