{allcanada} Kyle Connor has a goal, 2 assists to lead Jets to 5-3 win over Blues for 3-2 series lead

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Kyle Connor had a goal and two assists and the Winnpeg Jets beat the St. Louis Blues 5-3 on Wednesday night to take a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

The teams play Game 6 on Friday in St. Louis, where the Blues won the two previous games while extending their home record to 14 consecutive victories.

The Jets were without star centre Mark Scheifele after the first period after he was crushed into the boards by Brayden Schenn early in the opening period.

Vladislav Namestnikov, who replaced Scheifele on the top line, had a goal and an assist. Nino Niederreiter also had a goal and assist. Dylan DeMelo and Adam Lowry had goals while Mason Appleton had three assists.

Connor Hellebuyck made 16 saves for Winnipeg, which had top-line winger Gabriel Vilardi back in action after missing 15 games with an upper-body injury.

Nathan Walker scored twice and rookie Jimmy Snuggerud also had a goal for the Blues. Jordan Binnington stopped 21 shots.

After being outscored 12-3 in two losses in St. Louis, the Jets jumped to a 1-0 lead 1:23 into the first period.

Scheifele sent the puck from behind the net out to Connor, who snapped it past Binnington.

The Blues responded when Walker stayed in front of Hellebuyck and tipped in a point shot from Colton Parayko at 3:42.

St. Louis defenseman Cam Fowler also picked up an assist, extending his point streak to five games with one goal and eight assists.

Winnipeg got the game's first power play after Schenn crushed Scheifele into the boards. He was called for interference and then roughing after Jets forward Brandon Tanev defended his teammate.

Twenty-seven seconds after Schenn's extra penalty expired, Niederreiter went net front and tipped in Dylan Samberg's shot at 8:39.

Both teams took four penalties, and had 17 hits each, as the temperatures rose during the opening period.

After the Jets only got one shot on goal in their second power play, Snuggerud scored his second goal of the playoffs with a low shot that went between Hellebuyck's left pad and the post at 6:06.

DeMelo scored Winnipeg's first second-period goal of the series when his point shot went off the back of Parayko and into the net at 11:05.

Connor sent a backhand pass across the front of the net to a rushing Namestnikov, who made it 4-2 with 1:09 remaining in the second.

{allcanada} Brunette, McCarthy join Evason, Huska on Men's Worlds staff

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Team Canada finalized its coaching staff for the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship on Wednesday.

After TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported Columbus Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason will lead Canada with Calgary Flames bench boss Ryan Huska serving as an assistant, Canada officially announced those appointments, plus two other assistant coach designations for next month's tournament in Sweden and Denmark.

Nashville Predators coach Andrew Brunette will serve as an assistant in addition to Steve McCarthy, who works as an assistant under Evason in Columbus.

Hockey Canada says the group was assembled by general manager Kyle Dubas, player relations adviser Ryan Getzlaf, senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations Scott Salmond and executive director of Canada's national men's team Doug Armstrong.

"Dean, Andrew, Ryan and Steve are excellent NHL coaches that bring many years of professional experience and leadership, and we are thrilled that they will lead Team Canada at the 2025 world championship," Dubas said in a news release.

"Our coaching staff will also be supported by an elite support staff that has many years of NHL experience, as well as experience at several world championships and Olympics, and we know our entire staff will create an environment for our players to succeed and wear the Maple Leaf with pride in Stockholm and Herning."

Evason led the Blue Jackets to a 40-33-9 record during the 2024-25 season, exceeding expectations and narrowly missing out on a postseason berth.

Canada lost in the semifinal to Switzerland and then were defeated by Sweden in the bronze medal game last year. Czechia won the tournament on home ice.

This year's tournament will begin on May 9 with Canada playing its first game a day later on May 10.

{allcanada} Whitecaps dispatch Inter Miami to advance to first CONCACAF Champions Cup final

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Brian White and Pedro Vite scored two minutes apart and the Vancouver Whitecaps stunned Inter Miami 3-1 in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal on Wednesday night, spoiling Lionel Messi's squad's hopes of making the tournament's final.

Sebastian Berhalter also scored for Vancouver, which advanced with a 5-1 aggregate to face either Cruz Azul or Tigres UNAL in the Champions Cup final on June 1.

Miami entered Wednesday's match trailing 0-2 in aggregate after being shut out in the first leg last Thursday. That meant they needed to win by at least three goals in regulation on Wednesday to advance.

Messi was held without a goal for the fourth straight match.

In the tournament's history, four MLS clubs, including Inter Miami last week, have lost the first leg of a semifinal by a 2-0 on the road. No team has come back to advance to the final.

Those chances were dashed quickly in the second half Wednesday, when Vancouver erased a one-goal deficit minutes into the frame.

Berhalter found White for the equalizer in the 51st minute and Vite sent a deflection past Oscar Ustari in the 53rd. Berhalter, who had an assist on the first two goals, put the game away with a shot from the center of the box into the bottom left corner in the 71st.

Berhalter has accounted for all five of the Whitecaps' goals in the semis after scoring one in the opener, but he will miss the championship because of yellow card accumulation. He was shown one in the first half after a foul on Miami's Tadeo Allende.

Jordi Alba got Miami on the board with his first goal of the season nine minutes into the game on a feed from Luis Suarez. Miami couldn't capitalize on a series of chances after that.

Miami also dropped its third straight match, the first time the team has lost that many in a row in the Messi era.

{allcanada} Ovechkin scores as the Capitals eliminate the Canadiens in 5, advance to play the Hurricanes

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time in seven years, the Washington Capitals were on the smiling end of a playoff handshake line. And they got to enjoy it at home for the first time in a decade.

Alex Ovechkin scored on a laser of a shot off a faceoff, Logan Thompson made some spectacular saves among his 28 and the Capitals beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 in Game 5 of their first-round series Wednesday night to advance in the NHL playoffs.

It's the Capitals' first series win since capturing the Stanley Cup in 2018, and they clinched at home for the first time since 2015. They face the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round with a spot in the Eastern Conference final at stake.

"We won a series and we're going to enjoy it tonight and tomorrow it's a new day and it's going to be a new series," Ovechkin said. "We have to be smart and we have to move on and game by game."

Ovechkin led the way with his power-play goal 11 minutes in, setting off chants of "Ovi! Ovi!" from the juiced up crowd. Pierre-Luc Dubois delivered a perfect pass to Jakob Chychrun, who beat Jakub Dobes just over two minutes later. Tom Wilson provided a valuable insurance goal on the power play late in the second period.

Fans expressed their appreciation for Thompson with chants of "LT! LT!" when he turned aside Kaiden Guhle on a three-on-one rush and with under two minutes left when he flashed his glove to rob Nick Suzuki with Dobes pulled for an extra attacker. Brandon Duhaime sealed it with an empty-netter with 25.6 seconds left.

Much like the final minutes of Game 2, Thompson was at his best at the start when the Canadiens came out with the desperation expected from a team facing elimination and then in the third when they pressed and tilted the ice toward him.

"He's a rock," center Dylan Strome said. "He was great. I thought he did what he did all year. He kept us in it, made the big saves when we needed it."

The Capitals asserted their dominance in the East's 1 versus 8 series, a year after getting swept as the underdog in it by the New York Rangers. Banged up and without top goalie Sam Montembeault and scoring winger Patrik Laine, the Canadiens got a goal from Emil Heineman but ultimately ran out of steam after going on a tear down the stretch in the regular season to be the last team to qualify for the playoffs.

"We had a good push in the third, and I think when teams gave us a little bit of space, we were very dangerous," coach Martin St. Louis said. "If we introduced ourself to the rest of the league in this playoffs, especially being the youngest team and stuff, I think we can walk out of here with our head held high."

Up next

Carolina and Washington meet in the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

{allcanada} 'It was all consensual,' woman says in video shown at hockey players' trial

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LONDON — Holding a white towel against her body, a young woman smiles and looks into the camera.

"It was all consensual," she says before asking if she's being filmed.

"You are so paranoid ... I enjoyed it," she adds. "I am so sober that's why I can't do this right now."

The short video, taken at the Delta hotel in London, Ont., at 4:26 a.m. on June 19, 2018, was one of a series of clips shown in quick succession Wednesday at the trial of Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote.

The five accused, who were on Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team, have all pleaded not guilty to sexual assault. McLeod has also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.

In another video, taken about an hour earlier, someone asks the woman twice if she is "OK with this." Both times, she agrees.

Prosecutors had referred to the videos, which they said were taken by McLeod, in their opening submissions to the jury on Monday.

At the time, prosecutor Heather Donkers urged jurors to listen carefully to the complainant's testimony later in the trial regarding "what was happening before and during the recording of these videos."

Donkers added the Crown plans to argue the videos are not evidence that the complainant did, in fact, consent.

The Crown alleges the woman, who cannot be identified under a standard publication ban, felt she had no choice but to go along when a group of men she didn't know started asking her to do things inside the hotel room. They allege she was drunk, uncomfortable and just trying to get through the night.

Jurors were also shown Wednesday a screenshot of what the Crown alleges is a group chat between members of the world junior team around 2:10 a.m. that day. In it, prosecutors allege, McLeod asks if anyone wants to be in a "three-way," then follows up with his hotel room number and Hart replies, "I'm in."

Another member of the 2018 team, Taylor Raddysh, testified Wednesday that he was the one who took the screenshot but didn't remember when the message came in or when he first saw it.

Raddysh, who now plays in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, was also asked about another series of screenshots showing what he said were text messages between him and McLeod.

In one, dated June 19, 2018 at 2:15 a.m., McLeod allegedly told Raddysh to come to his room if he wanted a "gummer." Raddysh told the court he understood "gummer" to mean "oral sex." He did not appear to reply to the message.

Another screenshot dated June 26, 1:57 p.m. included two messages from Raddysh to McLeod. "Bully just called me," one said, followed by, "Said there's an investigation."

Raddysh told the court he was referring to a Hockey Canada staff member and that he understood the investigation to relate to "that night in London."

Testifying remotely from Arlington, Va., Raddysh said he recalled very little from that night, even after reviewing transcripts from interviews he had with police in 2022 and lawyers in 2018.

There had been a ring ceremony on June 18 to mark the team's gold-medal win at that year's championship, followed by a dinner, he said.

Raddysh said he didn't have any memory of going to a bar with some of his teammates after the event, but did remember having a video call with his then-girlfriend once back in his hotel room, which he said was next to McLeod's.

He said he didn't have a "full recollection" of going to McLeod's room or how that came about, but remembered seeing McLeod in the room with another teammate, Boris Katchouk, and a woman. Raddysh said he was "pretty sure" the woman was on the bed, but he couldn't remember how she was positioned or whether she was wearing clothes.

"Sitting here today, I don't remember," he said. Nor could he remember how long he stayed in the room, or why he left, he said.

Prosecutors allege the complainant went with McLeod to his hotel room after they met at a downtown bar earlier in the night. Court has heard several members of the team were there after attending a Hockey Canada gala. The Crown alleges the complainant had about eight drinks while out with a friend.

At the hotel, McLeod and the complainant had sex — an encounter that is not part of the trial, court heard.

Afterward, McLeod invited others into the room, with as many as 10 present at some point, the Crown alleges. In the hours that followed, a number of sexual acts took place without the woman's voluntary consent, the prosecution alleges.

CAUTION: The following paragraphs contain graphic content some readers may find disturbing.

The Crown alleges McLeod, Hart and Dube obtained oral sex from the complainant without her consent at some point during the night, and that Dube slapped the complainant's buttocks without her consent while she was engaged in a sexual act with someone else.

Formenton is alleged to have had vaginal sex with the complainant in the bathroom without her consent. Foote allegedly did the splits over the complainant's face while she lay on the ground, grazing his genitals over her face, without her consent.

The Crown alleges McLeod vaginally penetrated the complainant again at the end of the night, without her consent. It's also alleged he assisted and encouraged his teammates to engage in sexual acts with the complainant knowing she had not consented.

Also on Wednesday, court watched security video from the lobby of the hotel and from the bar where some of the players and the complainant were earlier that evening.

{allcanada} CF Montreal defeats Toronto FC in a penalty shootout in Telus Canadian Championship

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TORONTO - CF Montreal finally had something to celebrate Wednesday, defeating Toronto FC in a penalty shootout in Telus Canadian Championship preliminary-round play.

Goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois was the hero, stopping Tyrese Spicer and Ola Brynhildsen as Montreal won the shootout 3-2.

Kobe Franklin and Alonso Coello scored for Toronto in the shootout. Theo Corbeanu ballooned his kick over the crossbar.

Joel Waterman, Dante Sealy and Dominic Iankov scored for Montreal. Tom Pearce also fired high.

The game went to the shootout after it finished deadlocked at 2-2 in regulation time, thanks to Montreal substitute Giacomi Vrioni's spectacular goal in the 88th minute. The Italian-born Albanian international forward, a designated player who had seen just 22 minutes of action previously this season, went airborne in volleying a cross past Luka Gavran.

Corbeanu scored and set up a goal by Spicer for Toronto, which led 1-0 and 2-1.

Waterman also scored for Montreal, which at 0-7-3 has yet to win in MLS play in 2025. Toronto, at 1-5-4, isn't much better but had gone unbeaten in four games (1-0-3) prior to its weekend 1-0 loss to visiting New York City FC.

Montreal had not won a game since Oct. 19 when it blanked visiting NYCFC 2-0 in league play. It has been outscored 14-4 in MLS play this season and came into the game scoreless in its last three outings.

With Toronto depleted in attack due to injury, Corbeanu's offence was timely.

The shifty winger put Toronto ahead in the 29th minute, coming off his wing and leaving Waterman in his wake before hitting a shot that deflected off Samuel Piette and looped over Sirois. The goal was better than the celebration, which saw Corbeanu fall over trying to slide on his knees towards the corner flag in front of a crowd of 20,265 at BMO Field.

Montreal pulled even in the 70th minute via Waterman on a play that started with a corner. The defender knocked home a Luca Petrasso cross after Toronto forward Dekwon Barrow's attempted clearance was a swing and a miss.

Corbeanu played provider in the 74th minute, beating Waterman down the flank and then sending in a cross that eluded a sliding defender en route to Spicer, who beat Sirois.

Toronto had been blanked in three of its five previous matches and outscored 14-8 in its 10 league outings to date this season. Corbeanu's strike ended TFC's 378-minute scoring drought at BMO Field, dating back to Deandre Kerr's 11th-minute goal in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Fire on March 15.

Toronto has not won at BMO Field since Sept. 14, a 2-1 league triumph over Austin FC.

Montreal will face either the Canadian Premier League's Forge FC or Halifax Wanderers FC, who meet May 7, in the two-legged quarterfinals.

The 15-team tournament opened Tuesday with CPL champion Cavalry FC blanking League1 Alberta champion Edmonton Scottish FC 6-0 and CPL-leading Atletico Ottawa downing League1 Ontario champion Scrosoppi FC 2-0.

Defending champion Vancouver got a bye to the final eight.

The Canadian Championship winner hoists the Voyageurs Cup and earns a berth in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the elite club tournament in North and Central America and the Caribbean, as well as $50,000.

Toronto coach Robin Fraser made six changes to the lineup that lost 1-0 to NYCFC with Italian star Lorenzo Insigne returning after starting on the bench on the weekend.

But fellow Italian Federico Bernardeschi was a late scratch with a club spokesperson saying he had not recovered from a knock in Saturday's game.

With Kerr, Derrick Etienne Jr. and Charlie Sharp also unavailable and Brynhildsen starting on the bench after an injury absence, Toronto was low on healthy forwards. So low that it signed Barrow, a TFC II forward, to an MLS short-term agreement and started the 21-year-old from Toronto up front. Barrow has three goals in 28 appearances for Toronto's reserve side.

Things got worse in the 18th minute when Toronto lost captain Jonathan Osorio to an apparent shoulder injury after falling awkwardly in a tangle with teammate Lazar Stefanovic and Montreal's Victor Loturi. Insigne took over as captain.

Interim Montreal coach Marco Donadel made five changes from the side that lost 1-0 at the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.

Prince Owusu, who led Toronto in scoring last season but was not retained by the club, and Petrasso, another ex-TFC player, started for Montreal.

Both teams had six Canadians in their starting 11, double the minimum required under cup rules.

Toronto has won the Canadian Championship eight times — more than anyone else — and finished runner-up six times. But it has not lifted the Voyageurs Cup since 2020.

Montreal has won the tournament five times, most recently in 2021, and made the final on three other occasions.

Toronto was also missing injured defenders Richie Laryea, Zane Monlouis and Henry Wingo. Montreal was without injured midfielder Bryce Duke.

Up next, Toronto hosts the New England Revolution in league play Saturday while Montreal welcomes the Philadelphia Union.

{allcanada} Whitecaps forward White named MLS player of the month for April

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEW YORK - Vancouver Whitecaps forward Brian White has been named Major League Soccer's player of the month for April.

White scored five goals over his three MLS appearances in April for league-leading Vancouver.

His five goals were tied for the league lead with San Jose's Josef Martínez and Nashville's Sam Surridge despite playing only 270 minutes.

The American international scored four times in Vancouver's 5-1 win over Austin on April 12, becoming the 18th player in MLS history to score four goals in a single match and the first Whitecaps player to reach 50 regular-season goals.

He also scored the winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Colorado on April 5.

White also scored the game-winning goal in the Whitecaps' 2-0 first-leg semifinal victory against Inter Miami in the CONCACAF Champions Cup last Thursday in front of a crowd of 53,837 at BC Place.

The second leg was scheduled for Wednesday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The Whitecaps posted a 3-0-1 record in April to end the month five points ahead of second-place Portland in the Western Conference standings.

White becomes the fourth Whitecap to be named MLS player of the month, joining Octavio Rivero (March 2015), David Ousted (June 2015), and Camilo Sanvezzo (July and October 2013).

{allcanada} Capitals’ Taylor Raddysh testifies remotely at the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Capitals forward Taylor Raddysh on Wednesday became the first active NHL player to testify in the Hockey Canada sexual assault case taking place in London, Ontario.

Raddysh, a member of Canada's 2018 world junior team who was in London the night of the incident but not charged in the case, testified remotely from Arlington, Virginia. He was a healthy scratch for Game 5 of the Capitals' first-round playoff series against Montreal on Wednesday night.

Raddysh took part in the morning skate and extra work after, which is typical for players not expected to be in the lineup. He was the odd man out with Aliaksei Protas returning from missing more than three weeks with a skate cut to his left foot.

The court dismissed him at 4 p.m. because of the game with the plan for Raddysh to return and answer more questions Thursday morning. He was not on the ice for pregame warmups.

Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton all pleaded not guilty to sexual assault charges. McLeod has also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of being a party to the offense of sexual assault.

Jurors on Wednesday were shown a screenshot of what prosecutors allege is a group chat between members of the team around 2:10 a.m. that day. In it, prosecutors allege, McLeod asks if anyone wants to be in a "three-way," then follows up with his hotel room number and Hart replies, "I'm in."

Raddysh testified that he was the one who took the screenshot but didn't remember when the message came in or when he first saw it. He was also asked about another series of screenshots showing what he said were text messages between him and McLeod.

In one, dated June 19, 2018, at 2:15 a.m., McLeod allegedly told Raddysh to come to his room if he wanted a "gummer." Raddysh told the court he understood "gummer" to mean "oral sex." He did not appear to reply to the message.

Raddysh said he recalled very little from that night, even after reviewing transcripts from interviews he had with police in 2022 and lawyers in 2018. He said he didn't have any memory of going to a bar with some of his teammates after the event but did remember having a video call with his then-girlfriend once back in his hotel room, which he said was next to McLeod's.

He said he didn't have a "full recollection" of going to McLeod's room or how that came about but remembered seeing McLeod in the room with another teammate, Boris Katchouk, and a woman. Raddysh said he was "pretty sure" the woman was on the bed, but he couldn't remember how she was positioned or whether she was wearing clothes.

"Sitting here today, I don't remember," Raddysh said, adding he could not remember how long he stayed in the room, or why he left.

{allcanada} Canada's Gabriel Diallo into quarterfinals at Madrid Open with win over Dimitrov

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MADRID — Montreal's Gabriel Diallo advanced to his first Masters-level quarterfinal with a comeback 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-4 fourth-round win over 15th-seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria at the Madrid Open on Wednesday.

Diallo won the second set in a hard-fought tiebreaker to tie the match 1-1, then made a break in the opening game of the third set stand up.

The 23-year-old Canadian won his first match point after forcing his veteran opponent into an error.

"Tennis is up and down, so you just try and manage," Diallo said. "Luckily today I managed to flip and win the match."

Dimitrov used his big serve to his advantage in the hotly contested second set, firing seven aces over his last three service games and another in the tiebreaker.

But Diallo fought off three match points and won two points on return to go up 8-7 before taking the second set with an ace.

"I honestly thought I was going home," Diallo said. "I thought the margins were so thin.

"It might be the best serving performance I've ever displayed in my whole life. I was lucky I got the point at 4-6 with (his) loose error, and then I was really confident at 5-6 behind my serve. Then I saved another match point."

The pivotal moment of the first set came in Game 11, when Diallo alternated two double-faults with two aces before Dimitrov prevailed to score the only break of the set at a crucial time.

Both players were strong on serve, with just two breaks in the entire match. Diallo faced just one break point while Dimitrov faced four.

Dimitrov had 14 total aces to Diallo's eight — an impressive total between the players on the ball-deadening clay surface.

Diallo will next face 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in Thursday's quarterfinals.

Diallo's best-ever run at an ATP 1000 tournament has come with a couple of big breaks. He advanced to the main draw as a lucky loser after coming up short in qualifying and avoided a huge hurdle when Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from their second-round match with an injury.

But he has been full value on the court, beating Belgium's Zizou Bergs, Poland's Kamil Majchrzak, former world No. 8 Cameron Norrie of Britain and now Dimitrov.

Diallo entered the tournament with a career-high ATP Tour ranking of 78. His win over Dimitrov will move him up to No. 54, according to the tour's live rankings.

{allcanada} Elks draft pick Newell receives year-long ban for doping violations

TORONTO - Edmonton Elks  draft pick Darien Newell has been given a year-long ban by the CFL for a series of doping infractions.

The Queen's defensive lineman was Edmonton's second-round pick in Tuesday night's draft.

All nine CFL teams were made aware of Newell's situation before the draft and that he had a hearing pending with an arbitrator on the matter.

The Elks didn't have a first-round pick Tuesday night but took the six-foot-two, 289-pound Newell with the second selection of the second round, 10th overall. Newell, of Brampton, Ont., was regarded as a blue-chip CFL prospect and was the top-ranked U Sports player on the CFL scouting bureau's top-20 list released Monday.

"The Edmonton Elks organization was aware of Darien Newell's impending suspension before selecting him Tuesday night," Ed Hervey, Edmonton's vice-president of football operations and general manager, said in a statement. "Throughout the draft process, we completed our due diligence on Darien and came away satisfied with both the person and the player.

"The organization is committed to supporting Darien throughout this process, and we look forward to when he can join the Green and Gold."

According to the CFL, Newell was selected for a random test March 19 while participating in the league's national combine. His sample tested positive for nine banned substances, including Boldenone, Nandrolone, Drostanolone and Norclostebol, all forms of steroids.

Newell had appealed the positive test and the case was passed on to an independent arbitrator. Newell withdrew his appeal Wednesday, incurring an anti-doping rule violation and one-year sanction.

Last season, Newell had 33 tackles (17 solo, eight for loss), five sacks and a forced fumble. He was a perennial All-Canadian, registering 92 tackles (56 solo, 27.5 for loss), 17 sacks and a forced fumble at Queen's.

{allcanada} Oilers defense coming together at right time heading to Game 6 vs. Kings

--

LOS ANGELES -- In the span of five days, the atmosphere has turned from gloomy to glorious for the Edmonton Oilers, thanks in part to an increase in offensive production, but solidifying their play in the defensive zone as well.

The timing for such synergy could not be better heading into Game 6 of the Western Conference First Round against the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Thursday (10 p.m. ET; CBC, SN, TVAS2, ESPN, FDSNW).

Despite the loss of defenseman Mattias Ekholm for at least the rest of the opening round with an undisclosed injury, the Oilers have three healthy defense pairs humming, a big reason Edmonton was able to turn a 2-0 series deficit into a 3-2 series lead. Thanks to a 3-1 win at Crypto.com Arena in Game 5 on Tuesday, The Oilers are one victory from dispatching the Kings for the fourth consecutive postseason.

"I don't think we're ever going to replace Ekholm, he gives us so much, but the group we have right now are doing a tremendous job stepping up in his absence," Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said Wednesday. "We're fortunate to have that depth that we have."

Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard, Brett Kulak, Jake Walman, John Klingberg and Ty Emberson are collectively making up for the loss of Ekholm, and Troy Stecher also is ready to return after overcoming an undisclosed injury.

The 22:12 of average ice time Ekholm recorded through 65 regular-season games is being distributed among the group; through the first five games of the series, Bouchard leads all Oilers defenseman in average ice time (25:59), followed by Nurse (24:53), Kulak (24:15), Walman (20:37), Klingberg (20:20) and Emberson (11:29).

"Obviously [Ekholm] is a big hole that we're missing," Walman said. "But there's guys here that can step up and kind of fill that void. It's just a goal that we're setting for ourselves to keep the score down and play good defense. We have such skilled guys up front that the more we can play in the [offensive] zone, the better off for us."

Acquired by Edmonton in a trade with the San Jose Sharks on March 7, Walman missed the last six games of the season with an undisclosed injury before returning for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. His ice time has steadily increased and he has found chemistry on a pair with Klingberg, who returned in Game 2 after sitting out the 20 of the last 21 games of the regular season with the injury.

"Thinking back to the trade deadline, we're thinking, 'What do we need?' " Knoblauch said. "We were thinking maybe a top-line forward or a depth defenseman. Certainly with the injury to Ekholm, we're very fortunate the right move was to trade for a guy like Walman, and in fact, Walman has been a great fit for us."

Klingberg is starting to fit in as well. He signed a one-year free-agent contract with Edmonton on Jan. 17, not having played since undergoing season-ending hip surgery in December 2023, as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Klingberg made his debut with Edmonton in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Jan. 30, and played 10 of 11 games before sitting out the next 10 games. He returned for a 6-1 loss at the Seattle Kraken on March. 27, but was injured blocking a shot, which forced him to miss the last 10 games of the season. His ankle developed an infection, keeping him out of the lineup longer than expected.

"I feel good, this is the best I've moved so far on the ice," Klingberg said prior to Game 5. "I think the time off with my ankle and the meds probably helped my hips a little bit, so it's been good and I'm just going to keep building on that."

Klingberg was an effective two-way defenseman for the Dallas Stars prior to developing issues with each hip; he had an NHL career-best 67 points (eight goals, 59 assists) in 82 games for Dallas in 2017-18.

"Klingberg, him not playing for about a year then coming back and playing a handful of games, then getting hurt again and then playing a couple of games, it's not easy for anybody to do," Knoblauch said. "I think he has been a strong addition to our team, and he's been great back there. He tells us this is the best he's felt. When he came back there was maybe a little glitch (with his hips), maybe not 100 percent and playing through it ,and he needed to get stronger and need some time off."

The 32-year-old displayed his offensive attributes in Game 5, setting up forward Evander Kane for the tying goal. Klingberg made a good play to fend off Kings defenseman Drew Doughty coming out of the penalty box and slid the puck over to Kane in the slot. His shot bounced off the skate of defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov and up over goalie Darcy Kuemper to knot it 1-1 at 6:16 of the second period.

Forward Mattias Janmark scored the winning goal at 7:12 of the third period and center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored an empty-net goal at 19:02 with Kuemper on the bench for an extra attacker.

"Whether it's the treatments or whatever it was, he's now feeling the way he wants to feel," Knoblauch said of Klingberg. "Anytime a player feels comfortable with their body, their surroundings, their partner, whatever it is, ultimately they're going to play better, and I think right now he feels comfortable with what he's doing."

{allcanada} Laine, Montembeault remain out for Canadiens

Patrik Laine will miss his third straight game because of an undisclosed injury when the Canadiens visit the Washington Capitals in Game 5 at Washington on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; MNMT, ESPN, SNP, SNO, SNE, TVAS, CBC).

The forward and defenseman Alexandre Carrier traveled with the team, and it is unclear if Carrier will play.

Carrier, who did not practice Tuesday, is day to day after he was injured on a hit by Tom Wilson in Game 4 on Sunday. Carrier left the game with 6:35 remaining in the third period. Jayden Struble is expected to replace him in the lineup if he can not play.

Montreal trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 Eastern Conference First Round series.

Goalie Sam Montembeault will not play after an undisclosed injury forced him to leave midway through Montreal's 6-3 win in Game 3 on Friday. He is day to day.

Jakub Dobes will start and Cayden Primeau will be the backup goalie for a second straight game.

{allcanada} Mattias Janmark's goal sends dominant Oilers past Kings 3-1. They take a 3-2 series lead to Edmonton

LOS ANGELES (AP) Mattias Janmark scored the tiebreaking goal at 7:12 of the third period, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 Tuesday night for their third consecutive victory and a 3-2 lead in their first-round series.

Evander Kane and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored and Calvin Pickard made 20 saves for the defending Western Conference champion Oilers, who can advance with a win in Game 6 in Edmonton on Thursday.

Edmonton was finally rewarded for dominating possession and shots throughout Game 5 when Janmark converted a rebound of Viktor Arvidsson's shot.

After some fraught final moments, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added an empty-net goal to finish the Oilers' franchise-record third consecutive comeback playoff victory.

Andrei Kuzmenko scored and Darcy Kuemper stopped 43 shots for the second-seeded Kings, who are one loss away from their fourth consecutive first-round playoff exit at Edmonton's hands despite winning the first two games of this series at home and blowing third-period leads in the next two.

The home teams won the first four games in this series, but the Kings then faltered badly in the building where they had the NHL's best home record this season. Los Angeles also led in the final minute of Game 4 before losing in overtime, allowing Edmonton back into the series.

After mounting a third-period comeback to take Game 3, the Oilers have tilted the series decidedly in their favor since midway through Game 4, utterly dominating possession and shots. Edmonton has outshot the Kings 79-34 since the start of the third period of Game 4.

But Kuemper made 19 saves in the first period of Game 5 to keep it scoreless, and Los Angeles went ahead early in the second when Kuzmenko tipped home captain Anze Kopitar's shot during a power play. Kuzmenko recorded his sixth point of the postseason and his 23rd point in 27 games since joining the Kings less than two months ago.

The Oilers answered less than three minutes later with Kane's second goal of the series from the slot. Kane went unpunished later in the period for a knee-on-knee hit on Kings scoring leader Adrian Kempe.

Edmonton's 33 shots in the first two periods were the most allowed all season by Los Angeles, which was shut down after scoring 19 goals in the first four games of the series.
