Christopher Nolan's next big epic at Universal, The Odyssey, has added Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin and Samantha Morton.

For Patel, Page and Irwin, it's a reteam with the 2x Oscar-winning filmmaker. Patel starred in Nolan's 2020 Tenet, Page in 2010's Inception, and Irwin in 2014's Interstellar. For 2x Oscar nominee Morton, it's her first time working with Nolan.

The foursome join a booming ensemble that counts Matt DamonTom HollandAnne Hathaway, ZendayaRobert PattinsonLupita Nyong'o, Benny Safdie and Charlize Theron.

Nolan's mythic action epic, shot with new Imax cameras, is based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer which follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The classic explores themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning and the struggle against divine will. The tale includes iconic stories like Odysseus' encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens and the witch-goddess Circe, culminating in a reunion with his wife Penelope.

The film will of course be screened in Imax when it hits cinemas everywhere on July 17, 2026; that third weekend of July is a good luck date for Nolan where he's launched such hits as Dark Knight, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer among other titles.

Patel broke out in Universal's romcom Yesterday and starred in Don't Look Up, the HBO series Station Eleven, Netflix's Enola Holmes 2 and recently the Sundance world premiere Bubble & Squeak. The actor is repped by WME, 42 and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

Page was Oscar nominated for Juno and counts two Emmy noms in Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program for Gaycation. Credits include Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, and the movies X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: The Last Stand, Whip It and Tilda among others. Page is repped by UTA, Vie Entertainment and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman.

Irwin is a Tony Award winning actor for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? His feature credits also include Rustin, Spoiler Alert, HBO's Confirmation, Rachel Getting Married, Bastards, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Higher Ground, Igby Goes Down, Lady in the Water, Dark Matter, Raving, Across The Universe, Popeye, Eight Men Out, Silent Tongue, Illuminata, A Midsummer Night's Dream, My Blue Heaven, A New Life, Scenes from a Mall, and Stepping Out as well as HBO's The Gilded Age and Paramount+'s Star Trek: Discovery. He is repped by Innovative Artists and Viking Entertainment.

Morton was Oscar nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Sweet and Lowdown and for Best Actress in 2004's In America. Her feature credits count Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, The Whale, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Elizabeth: The Golden Age among others. {allcanada} Galarneau to open Canada’s Davis Cup qualifier against Hungary

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MONTREAL - Gabriel Diallo is back home and tasked with leading Canada once again.

With top Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov absent, Diallo headlines this weekend's squad for a Davis Cup tie against Hungary.

The 23-year-old from Montreal triumphed in his hometown a year ago with two singles wins against South Korea at the men's team tennis tournament, setting up his best season yet in 2024.

Now ranked a career-high No. 85 — nearly 50 spots higher than 12 months ago — the six-foot-eight, 198-pound Diallo is approaching this weekend with his usual calm but confident attitude.

"It feels the same whether I'm No. 1-ranked or number 50 (in Canada)," he said after Friday's draw. "I'm ready for everything, and I'm just going to do my part the best I can."

Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Que., will meet Hungary's Fabian Marozsan on Saturday to open the best-of-five first-round qualifier.

Diallo drew Marton Fucsovics in Saturday's second match. He hopes to pick up where he left off on the indoor hard court at IGA Stadium, which seats 2,000.

"Doing it here in Montreal last year was quite special, especially here for me," he said. "It's the club where I grew up playing. I don't live far from here, so seeing so many familiar faces in the crowd was quite special.

"Gives you a good momentum, especially if you manage to get the win like last year, and hopefully we can have a similar result this year."

Diallo won a Challenger event, reached an ATP 250 final and made it to the US Open's third round in 2024.

"It's been a great transformation for him," said Canada team captain Frank Dancevic. "He's improved so many areas of his game over the years, and he's grown into a serious player on tour right now, so it's great to see and he's great to have on the team."

Veteran player Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., and Calgary's Cleeve Harper round out Canada's lineup.

Pospisil and Draxl are scheduled to take on Marozsan and Mate Valkusz in Sunday's doubles match. If necessary, Diallo would meet Marozsan in a fourth matchup and Galarneau would battle Fucsovics in a fifth.

Canada is ranked third in the Davis Cup standings, while Hungary is 22nd. But No. 22 Auger-Aliassime is busy playing in a tournament in France and the 53rd-ranked Shapovalov withdrew from the competition last week, citing a back injury.

"Without Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov, they are a little bit weaker," said Hungary team captain Kornel Bardocz. "But I think they still have a very, very strong team, so we aren't underestimating the Canadian team, so the players prepared hard during the week, and they are ready for a fight."

Hungary, meanwhile, travelled overseas with its best.

Marozsan is ranked 58th in the world and reached as high as No. 36 last year. Fucsovics is only 96th but has flirted with the top 30 in the past.

"Hungary is certainly serious by bringing their top two players here," Dancevic said. "Fucsovics is a player with a lot of experience, he's been (No. 31) in the world, so he plays a really high level. Marozsan is younger, big game, had good results at the Australian Open, comes in with confidence.

"We're really even, in my opinion. We both have good teams and it won't be a weekend that ends after the third match, it'll go four or five."

The 25-year-old Galarneau, despite his No. 176 ranking, upset Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4 at a Challenger event in Portugal last week. Draxl, 23, is Canada's top-ranked doubles player on the roster at No. 113.

"It's a young team, with the exception of Vasek," Dancevic said, as laughs went around the press conference room.

Pospisil will play in his 35th Davis Cup tie — and knows it could be his last with retirement on the horizon.

"I just want to soak it in, enjoy it. I haven't decided," he said. "I'll be making some kind of decision this year, but there is a high chance this will be my last time, so I'm gonna try to enjoy it as best I can.

"At the same time, I'm here to do a job, and I'm gonna want to contribute to the team and get the win in doubles."

Canada and Hungary are meeting for the first time in Davis Cup action.

The winner of the two-day tie will advance to the second round of qualifiers in September. The losing team will be relegated to the World Group 1 level.

Canada has lost in the quarterfinals the last two years and won nine of its last 10 home ties.

{allcanada} Whitecaps lose midfielder Armstrong to Sheffield Wednesday

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Whitecaps have sent midfielder Stuart Armstrong to Sheffield Wednesday, a club in England's League Championship.

The club announced the transfer Friday, saying in a release that the 32-year-old Scot is returning to England with the goal of once again playing in the Premier League.

He previously played six seasons with Southampton FC, including five in the Premier League.

Vancouver did not disclose the transfer fee that came with the deal.

Armstrong joined the 'Caps as a designated player in September, signing a contract through 2026. He made just 10 appearances across all competitions for Vancouver, scoring two goals and contributing two assists.

"Although I was only in Vancouver for a short time, I am extremely grateful for the kindness I received from the club and the fans," he said in a release.

"I am also so thankful to have been a part of one of the best groups of people I have ever met. I will of course miss the beautiful city, but more importantly, I will miss the people in it. I will continue to support the team from afar and wish them nothing but success for the future."

Armstrong's departure leaves yet another hole in the Whitecaps' offence ahead of the Major League Soccer season.

The club parted ways with striker Fafa Piccault following last year's campaign. The 33-year-old Haitian international was third on the team in goals but did not see his option picked up and is set to play for Inter Miami this season.

The Whitecaps also transferred forward Deiber Caicedo to a Colombian club, and said goodbye to Canadian midfielder Ryan Raposo, Austrian midfielder Alessandro Schopf and American goalkeeper Joe Bendik.

Some of those roster spots may be filled before the season begins, hinted Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster.

"We have a talented group preparing for the new season and everyone at the club believes in the objectives we set at the start of the year," he said in a release. "We are continuing to pursue new additions and this move opens up additional possibilities to use either of the league's roster construction models, and we will use this opportunity to decide how to get the best from all available options."

The team is currently holding pre-season training in Marbella, Spain.

The Whitecaps' first game of 2024 will come on Feb. 20 when the team visits Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa to kick off a two-legged CONCACAF Champions League matchup. Vancouver will play its first MLS game of the year on Feb. 23 when it visits the Timbers before hosting Saprissa on Feb. 27. The 'Caps will hold their home opener when the L.A. Galaxy visit on March 2.

{allcanada} Poised to lead Canada at 4 Nations, Crosby eyeing Olympic return in 2026

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Sidney Crosby has a lot on his plate.

The 37-year-old superstar is trying to drag the scuffling Pittsburgh Penguins back into the playoff race. He's also set to lead Canada at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament that will pit the country against the United States, Sweden and Finland.

Crosby can also see something lingering over the horizon that further fuels his unwavering passion — the 2026 Olympics.

"It's something that's in the back of my mind," Crosby said Friday. "It's something you have to earn. But it would be a pretty cool experience."

Crosby, who helped Canada win gold at the 2010 and 2014 Games, was named his country's captain for the 4 Nations earlier this week.

The round-robin tournament with a final, set to run Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and Boston, is expected to serve as an appetizer ahead of the league's Olympic return in 2026.

The NHL went to five straight Games between 1998 and 2014, but skipped 2018 for financial reasons before the COVID-19 pandemic scuttled 2022 plans.

The 4 Nations will be the closest hockey has seen to a best-on-best men's tournament since the 2016 World Cup, which included a 23-and-under Team North America featuring Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews. Russia is banned due to its ongoing war in Ukraine, while reigning world champion Czechia is also on the outside.

"Everybody's been hoping that this would come into fruition," said Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leafs captain poised to wear the 'C' for the U.S. "We missed out on a couple of Olympics already, which is unfortunate, but representing your country is very special.

"It's something that the players have been craving and looking forward to, and the fans as well."

Crosby and Matthews were both asked on separate video conference call with reporters how invested players will be for one-time tournament — the NHL hopes to hold a World Cup every four years beginning in 2028 — around the usual all-star break in the middle of the regular season.

"When you put guys together representing their countries, I think it brings out the best," Crosby said. "You throw in the fact that a lot of guys haven't had this opportunity, I would think it's going to be close to a World Cup."

Matthews expects the competition to be fierce.

"Missing out on two Olympics, you want to have that opportunity to play for your country and play in these kinds of environments and tournaments and situations," said the 27-year-old. "You wear your country's jersey, it always comes with a lot of pride and a lot of honour. I don't think that's gonna be lost on any of the players."

And it's all coming quick. Canada opens against Sweden on Feb. 12, while the U.S. meets Finland the following night.

"I'm excited," Crosby said. "The learning curve is quick. You've got to take in as much information as you can. Everyone's picked for a reason."

He'll be hoping for another tap on the shoulder — at the Olympics — in a year's time.

PRAISING CONNOR

Crosby was asked what he's seen from McDavid in terms of honing his game each season since the phenom first entered the league a decade ago.

"You have to constantly evolve and adapt," Crosby said of the Edmonton Oilers captain and three-time Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP. "Especially a player like him that gets so much attention (and) teams are trying to stop every night.

"That's a progression that's important if you want to continue to have success. He's been able to do that at a pretty incredibly high level."

DOUGHTY TIME?

Vegas Golden Knights defenceman Alex Pietrangelo withdrew from Canada's roster because of an undisclosed ailment. The list of potential replacements is topped by Drew Doughty, who made his season debut this week with the Los Angeles Kings following ankle surgery in October.

The 35-year-old won gold with Canada at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics to go along with a pair of Stanley Cup victories.

"He's pretty versatile back there," Crosby said. "A guy who can play in any situation."

PROVINCIAL PRIDE

Crosby will be joined at the 4 Nations by fellow Nova Scotians Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche and Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins.

The trio skate together in the off-season and could play on a line.

"We just appreciate the opportunity," Crosby said. "Seeing how they work in the summer and how much they put into it, and knowing what this means to them, that's really what it's all about."

{allcanada} Lions restructure contract with QB Rourke

--

The BC Lions have announced that they have restructured the contract of Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke.

Rourke remains signed through the next two seasons.

"Nathan's re-structured deal allows us to continue to build our roster for success this year and beyond," said general manager Ryan Rigmaiden. "We're excited to have him leading our offence and feel he'll continue to ascend to the level we've seen him perform."

After winning the CFL Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 2022 with the Lions, Rourke made a run for the NFL, making stops with the Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons before re-signing with the Lions in August of 2024.

The 26-year-old native of Victoria, B.C., struggled in his return to the CFL, throwing for 1,781 yards with four touchdowns and nine interceptions over nine games last season.

Rourke lost his job to Vernon Adams Jr. late in the season as the Lions fell to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Division semifinal.

Adam Jr. was traded to the Calgary Stampeders in November as BC signaled that Rourke will be their No. 1 pivot heading into the 2025 CFL campaign.

{allcanada} Canucks agree to trade forward J.T. Miller to Rangers

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The never-ending trade saga with the Vancouver Canucks has come to an end with the team agreeing to deal J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Centre Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini and a conditional first-round pick will go from the Rangers to the Canucks in the trade, according to ESPN's Emily Kaplan. Defencemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom will go with Miller to New York.

Friedman reports the first-round pick is top 13 protected for the 2025 NHL Draft. If it falls inside the top 13 slots, the Canucks will receive an unprotected first-round pick in 2026 instead.

The Canucks decided to move the 31-year-old Miller amid off-ice drama and sub-standard on-ice production.

This comes as the beginning of the end to a months-long narrative between Miller and Elias Pettersson, during which the rumoured rift between the Canucks' top two centremen has been affecting the team, both on-ice and off.

Friedman had previously reported that all solutions were on the table, including trading one, both or neither. Team president Jim Rutherford added further flames to the fire earlier this week when he told Gary Mason of The Glove and Mail that "it certainly appears like there's not a good solution that would keep this group together."

Miller hit career-highs in goals (37) and points (103) last season to lead the Canucks to a Pacific Division title but the East Palestine, Ohio, native has suffered a turbulent 2024-25. Miller had 16 points in the first 17 games of the season (six goals, 11 assists) before taking a 10-game leave of absence for personal reasons.

After his return, he went pointless for five games but eventually broke through for points in five of Vancouver's last six contests.

On the season, he has nine goals, 35 points and a minus-4 rating.

Miller began his career with the Rangers and played six seasons in New York before being traded to Tampa Bay in 2018. Miller is in the second year of a seven-year, $56 million contract and had to waive his no-trade clause to allow this deal to be completed.

Chytil is in his seventh full NHL season and will take over Miller's spot as a top-six centre on the Canucks. The 25-year-old Czech native has dealt with concussions throughout his career and has scored 75 goals and 164 points in 375 career games.

Mancini, 22, is in his second pro season and made his NHL debut with the Rangers earlier this year, appearing in 15 games.

Brannstrom, 25, has appeared in 28 games for the Canucks and eight more at the AHL level this season. Dorrington, 20, was a sixth-round pick by the Canucks in 2022 and is currently in his junior season at Northeastern.

{allcanada} NHL salary cap expected to jump to $95.5M next season; rise to $113.5M in 2027-28

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The National Hockey League salary cap is expected to rise significantly over the next three seasons, according to projections released by the league and the NHLPA on Friday.

The salary is expected to jump by $7.5 million to $95.5 million in 2025-26, with a rise to $104 million the following season and $113.5 million in 2027-28.

"Both Clubs and Players have sought a certain level of predictability with respect to Payroll ranges from year to year and over time for advance planning capabilities," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. "In reviewing our numbers with the Players' Association as part of our collective bargaining, we finally felt like we were in a position to give them that.

"It's not 'absolute certainty,' but maybe it's the next best thing.''

The forecast comes with several big-name players currently slated to become unrestricted free agents this summer, including newly acquired Carolina Hurricanes star Mikko Rantanen. Toronto Maple Leafs forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares are also playing on expiring deals, along with Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets and Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand.

The salary cap for this season sits at $88 million after rising $4.5 million from the previous $83.5 million mark.

The salary cap for the 2022-23 season was $82.5 million, marking the first time the cap increased in three years due to the pandemic as it remained at $81.5 million from the 2019-20 campaign through 2021-22.

{allcanada} Toronto FC gives up late goal in pre-season draw with Norway's Fredrikstad FK

MARBELLA - Toronto FC gave up a late goal and had to settle for a 1-1 draw Thursday with Norway's Fredrikstad FK in the MLS team's first game of the pre-season.

The contest was played in four 30-minute halves with TFC giving two different starting lineups 60 minutes each at La Quinta Football Center.

Canadian international winger Theo Corbeanu scored on his Toronto debut, curling a low free kick around the wall and past the goalkeeper in the 47th minute. Former Guinea youth international Mai Traore replied for Fredrikstad in the 119th minute when, left along in front of goal, he deflected a cross past Luka Gavran.

"The game was hectic early on, which I kind of expected. It's the first time we're actually playing against opposition," said Toronto coach Robin Fraser. "As the game wore on, I thought the first group grew more and more comfortable. And looked more cohesive than the second group.

"But we saw some good things. We saw a lot of promise. Good combinations up front. Theo did well."

Corbeanu is on a season-long loan from Spain's Granada CF, with an option to make the move permanent.

Sean Johnson started in goal for the first group behind Kevin Long, Sigurd Rosted, Raoul Petretta, Kobe Franklin, Matty Longstaff, captain Jonathan Osorio, Corbeanu, Federico Bernardeschi, Deandre Kerr and former Colorado Rapids midfielder Jack Price, on trial with the club.

Gavran took over in goal for the second half of the contest, behind Lazar Stefanovic, Adam Pearlman, Kosi Thompson, Nate Edwards, Tyrese Spicer, Deybi Flores, Alonso Coello, Markus Cimermancic, Lorenzo Insigne and Hugo Mbongue.

Bernardeschi exited some 12 minutes into the game, holding his back.

"He's had back stiffness for the last, maybe, 48 hours," said Fraser. "He wanted to give it a try and he went in. It just didn't make sense to push it at this point. Not with (the season opener) a couple of weeks away.

The Italian was replaced by Cimermancic, a Toronto FC 2 midfielder who is in camp in Spain.

"I thought he put in a really solid shift. He had some very good moments," Fraser said of the 20-year-old.

Johnson was largely untroubled in his 60-minute stint. Garvran made a diving acrobatic save to deny a goal.

Insigne did not have much of an impact in his time on the field.

Fredrikstad finished sixth in the Norwegian top flight last season at 14-7-9.

Toronto takes on Sweden's BK Hacken on Monday, leaving later that day for Toronto. The team will then head south to continue camp in Florida before opening the season Feb. 22 at D.C. United.

{allcanada} Crosby named Team Canada captain for 4 Nations Face-Off

--

Sidney Crosby was named captain of Team Canada for the 4 Nations Face-Off on Tuesday, giving him the chance to lead his country to a fourth international championship.

"I am excited for the opportunity to once again represent Canada on the international stage, and it is an honor to be named captain for the 4 Nations Face-Off on a team with so many great players who are leaders on their NHL teams," Crosby said.

Crosby, who has been the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins since May 31, 2007, has captained Canada to wins at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the 2015 World Championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

The 37-year-old center will be joined on Team Canada's leadership group by Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar, who will be alternate captains.

"I look forward to serving on the leadership group with Connor and Cale, as they are both excellent leaders and are deserving of this honor. I know the leadership group and our entire team is excited to wear the Maple Leaf, and we look forward to kicking off the 4 Nations Face-Off in front of Canadian fans."

The 4 Nations Face-Off is an international tournament featuring teams made up of only NHL players from Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States.

The teams will play each other once in a round-robin format starting on Feb. 12 at Bell Centre in Montreal. The final day of the round robin is Feb. 17 at TD Garden in Boston, with the two top teams advancing to the championship game on Feb. 20 in Boston.

Canada opens the tournament against Sweden on Feb. 12 in Montreal (8 p.m. ET; MAX, truTV, TNT, SN, TVAS).

"I would like to congratulate Sidney, Connor and Cale for being named captains for the 4 Nations Face-Off. All three possess exceptional leadership qualities, a determination to be the best and a desire to win, as well as elite skill," said Canada general manager Don Sweeney who holds the same role with the Boston Bruins. "We are fortunate to have incredible leadership on our team, and we know this group of players will lead Canada with pride while playing an important role in helping us accomplish our ultimate goal of winning the 4 Nations Face-Off."

When asked in October who should be the Canada captain, McDavid didn't hesitate.

"It should be Sid. It should be Sid for sure, that's not even a question," McDavid said. "It's just how it should be. He's Sidney Crosby and he's been there so many times and he's the guy. It's not like I thought about it a lot, it's just such a no-brainer."

Said Crosby: "I appreciate that. I think that being a little more experienced he's giving me that. He's obviously a great leader and he's done so much for the team here and for Canada as well. I think anytime you're looked to wear a letter, whether it's a 'C' or an 'A' and be a part of Team Canada, it's a great honor regardless. But I appreciate that."

Crosby, the longest-tenured captain in the NHL, is the Penguins' all-time leader in games (1,324) and assists (1,042) and is second in goals (607) and points (1,649) to Mario Lemieux (690 goals, 1,723 points). Voted among the 100 Greatest NHL Players as part of the League's Centennial celebration in 2017, Crosby is a three-time Stanley Cup champion (2009, 2016, 2017) and two-time Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP (2016, 2017). He has also won the Art Ross Trophy as scoring champion twice, the Hart Trophy as League MVP twice, the "Rocket" Richard Trophy as top goal scorer twice and the Ted Lindsay Award as MVP as chosen by the NHL Players' Association three times.

{allcanada} Matthews to captain US. Canada, Finland and Sweden have injury questions for 4 Nations Face-Off

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Auston Matthews will serve as captain for the United States in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off, and his team is the only one involved without a glaring injury question to answer.

Canada, which will have Sidney Crosby as captain for yet another international tournament, must choose a replacement for two-time Stanley Cup champion and 2014 Olympic gold medalist Alex Pietrangelo.

Victor Hedman will captain Sweden, which already selected an injury replacement in goal and might need two more for skaters.

And Aleksander Barkov will wear the "C" for Finland, which will not have top defenseman Miro Heiskanen after he was injured earlier this week.

U.S.

Matthews as captain felt automatic, especially after he was given that role with the Toronto Maple Leafs prior to this season.

Matthew Tkachuk, who won the Cup with Barkov and the Florida Panthers last year, and Boston's Charlie McAvoy are the alternates.

U.S. general manager Bill Guerin said, "They all bring leadership skills in different ways and together represent the drive, desire and passion we need in not only representing our country but in helping achieve our ultimate goal."

The previous time the U.S. won an international competition featuring the best players in the world was the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

Canada

Crosby was captain when Canada won Olympic gold in 2010 and '14 and then the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Even Connor McDavid, who has surpassed the Pittsburgh Penguins center as the best player in the league, has said that job should still belong to Crosby.

McDavid, Edmonton's captain, and Colorado's Cale Makar, will be the alternate captains.

"Sidney, Connor and Cale all possess exceptional leadership qualities, a determination to be the best and a burning desire to win," coach Jon Cooper said. "We are fortunate to have incredible leadership on our team. These players will lead Canada with pride as we set out to accomplish our goal of winning."

That took a shot when Pietrangelo withdrew "to tend to an ailment and prepare for the remainder of the regular season with Vegas," the Golden Knights said.

Among the options to replace him is Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, who on Wednesday made his season debut after breaking his left ankle during an exhibition game in September. Doughty was teammates with Crosby in '10, '14 and '16.

Sweden

Like Matthews, Hedman is new being a captain in the NHL, succeeding Steven Stamkos in the role with the Tampa Bay Lightning for this season. This is a different kind of challenge for the 2021 playoff MVP, who was somewhat mystifying left of Sweden's roster for the Sochi Olympics 11 years ago.

"This is obviously a short tournament, so you've got to hit the ground running from the start and it's not just going to be the guys wearing the letters," Hedman said. "It's going to be on the whole team to get together right way and try and find our identity as a team. We're just fortunate to have a lot of great leaders and great hockey players, and we are super excited to get together and get this thing going."

Sweden on Wednesday selected Philadelphia's Sam Ersson as the replacement for injured New Jersey goaltender Jacob Markstrom. General manager Josef Boumedienne and coach Sam Hallam might also need to get another forward if Vegas' William Karlsson can't play and another defenseman if Minnesota's Jonas Brodin is unavailable.

A night after scouting Ersson during a Flyers game earlier this month, they were in Washington and spoke with Capitals defenseman Rasmus Sandin afterward. It's unclear how far down the list of possibilities Sandin might be.

Finland

The Finnish Ice Hockey Association announced Heiskanen is out after getting injured in Dallas' game against Vegas earlier this week. That decision was made after GM Jere Lehtinen spoke with Stars management and Heiskanen.

"This is really sad news, first and foremost for Miro himself, but of course also for the Finnish 4 Nations Face-Off team and Dallas," Finland coach Antti Pennanen said. "We don't know the details of the injury yet, but we hope that Miro will be back in playing condition as soon as possible."

Lehtinen said a replacement for Heiskanen, one of the sport's top all-around players at the position, will be announced before the team gathers in Montreal and practices for the first time on Feb. 10.

"He's that type of player that any team in the world would love to have," Barkov said. "He is a leader defensively and really good offensively, so he's a huge part of Team Finland's success. ... All the best and try and get back as soon as possible and as healthy as possible. Health is the most important thing."
