Gabriel Diallo showcased some resiliency as his promising start to the 2025 season continued on Tuesday.

The Canadian rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain in the first round of the Hong Kong Open.

Diallo, the world No. 82, earned a spot in the ATP Tour 250 event by winning a pair of qualifying matches.

The Montrealer will next face No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the round of 16.

Diallo, 23, made strides in 2024. A runner-up showing at the Almaty Open in October followed a run to the third round at the U.S. Open.

Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., lost 6-2, 6-3 to Kei Nishikori of Japan in the opening round in Hong Kong.

Shapovalov tweeted afterward he has been battling a virus and couldn't play to his potential in his season opener.

{allcanada} Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski reveals how she beat breast cancer

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Canadian tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski revealed Tuesday that she underwent two surgeries to treat breast cancer following a diagnosis in April.

The three-time Grand Slam doubles champion shared her story on social media, disclosing that she played through her diagnosis in a year she won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

"I know this will come as a shock to many, but I am OK and I will be OK," Dabrowski wrote in an Instagram post. "Early detection saves lives. I can wholeheartedly agree with this."

Dabrowski kept the diagnosis private for months because she wasn't ready to expose herself to the ensuing questions and attention.

The 32-year-old from Ottawa said she started to recognize she was part of "something much bigger than myself," sharing posts about the importance of early detection and a healthy lifestyle during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Dabrowski said she now has a better grasp of her treatment, the side-effects and how to manage them.

By telling her story, Dabrowski said she wanted to emphasize the quality of life a person can maintain when cancer is detected early.

"Early on in my diagnosis I was afraid of cancer becoming part of my identity forever. I don't feel that way anymore," she said. "It is a privilege to be able to call myself a survivor."

Dabrowski first felt a lump in her left breast during a self-exam in the spring of 2023, but a doctor told her a few months later not to worry about it.

A year later, she felt the lump get bigger and a WTA doctor told her to get it scanned after a physical.

Dabrowski then underwent a series of examinations before a radiologist said the lump looked concerning and called her in for a biopsy the following morning.

"The preliminary results came back that day: cancer," she said. "These are words you never expect to hear, and in an instant your life or the life of a loved one turns upside down."

Dabrowski didn't let cancer affect her on-court performance.

She had a three-month layoff after losing the Miami Open doubles final in late March, but she returned to compete in June at the Nottingham Open, which she won alongside partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand.

Two weeks earlier, she couldn't lift her arm high enough to serve, needing help from a coach to toss the ball.

Dabrowski also had a slight delay in her treatment so she could compete at Wimbledon in July and the Paris Olympics in August.

She teamed with Routliffe to reach the final at Wimbledon before claiming the Olympic bronze alongside Montreal's Félix Auger-Aliassime in mixed doubles. Dabrowski also won the doubles title at the season-ending WTA Finals with Routliffe.

"A great reminder that you have no idea what people are going through," Routliffe wrote on Instagram. "Here's to more smiling in 2025."

Dabrowski said the experience has shifted her perspective on life and her career.

"When the threat of losing everything I'd worked for my entire life became a real possibility, only then did I begin to authentically appreciate what I had," she said. "Loving parents and friends, amazing coaches, a doubles partner who stuck by me, a real team, access to health-care experts, and to play a game for a living

"My mindset shifted from 'I have to do this (play tennis and not waste my skills)' to 'I get to do this.' Through this lens, I find it so much easier to find joy in areas of my life I previously viewed as a heavy weight."

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Sacramento State is set to hire former CFL star Geroy Simon as their new general manager, according to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

Simon was most recently the interim general manager of the Edmonton Elks prior to Ed Hervey taking the role in November.

The 6-foot-2 wide receiver played 15 seasons in the CFL, winning two Grey Cups with the BC Lions in 2006 and 2011, and once with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2013 in his final year in the league.

Simon was a six-time CFL All-Star and was named the league's Most Outstanding Player in 2006 after recording 1,856 receiving yards with 15 touchdowns as a member of the Lions.

The 49-year-old is the CFL's all-time receiving yard record holder at 16,352 and is fifth all-time with 104 career touchdowns. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

After retiring in 2013, Simon joined the Roughriders in a front office role and then returned to BC in 2015 where he was the team's director of global scouting and a U.S. Regional Scout.

Simon joined the Elks in 2021 as an assistant to then-general manager Chris Jones, before being named interim general manager earlier this year when Jones was relieved of his duties.

Sacramento State went 1-7 in Big Sky conference play this season and 3-9 overall.

NEW YORK -- Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" presented by GEICO for the week ending Dec. 29.

FIRST STAR – MARK SCHEIFELE, C, WINNIPEG JETS

Scheifele registered 4-2—6 in two games to lift the Jets (26-10-1, 53 points) to a perfect week and an 8-2-1 record in their past 11 contests dating to Dec. 5. He posted 3-1—4, including his 10th career hat trick (all w/ WPG) and sixth game-winning goal of the season, in a 5-2 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs Dec. 23. Scheifele became the second player in franchise history to accumulate at least 10 career hat tricks, following Ilya Kovalchuk (11), as well as the fifth different Jets/Thrashers player to score three goals in a single period (doing so in the final frame). He followed that with 1-1—2, his 13th multi-point performance of 2024-25 through 37 total appearances, in a 4-2 triumph over the Ottawa Senators Dec. 28. The 31-year-old Scheifele has compiled 22-22—44 overall this season, placing among the League leaders in game-winning goals (t-2nd; 6), shooting percentage (minimum: 1 SOG/GP – 5th; 25.9%), goals (t-5th; 22) and points (14th; 44). He and the Jets will face the Nashville Predators tonight on "Prime Monday Night Hockey" (7:30 p.m. ET, Prime, FDSNSO).

SECOND STAR – RASMUS DAHLIN, D, BUFFALO SABRES

Dahlin shared the League lead in assists and points with 0-7—7 in three appearances to power the Sabres (14-19-4, 32 points) to an unblemished week. He set a career high with four helpers in a 7-1 win versus the New York Islanders Dec. 23. Only four other defensemen in Buffalo history have recorded as many assists in a single game: Bill Hajt (Nov. 13, 1976 at NYR), Phil Housley (Dec. 23, 1989 at QUE), Brian Campbell (Oct. 13, 2007 vs. WSH) and Toni Lydman (Feb. 27, 2008 vs. NSH). Dahlin then helped the Sabres pick up victories against the two participants in this Tuesday's Discover NHL Winter Classic (5 p.m. ET, TNT, truTV, MAX, SN, TVAS), notching two helpers in a 6-2 triumph against the Chicago Blackhawks Dec. 27 and one assist in a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues Dec. 29. The 24-year-old Dahlin, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2018 NHL Draft, sits fifth among defensemen (minimum: 10 GP) with 0.90 points per game this season and 11th overall with 6-20—26 despite missing eight of Buffalo's 37 total contests (29 GP).

THIRD STAR – ZACH WERENSKI, D, COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

Werenski matched Dahlin with 0-7—7 in three games as the Blue Jackets (15-16-6, 36 points) won two of their three contests to move within four points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. He notched three assists, including a helper on Kirill Marchenko's tiebreaking goal with 2:12 remaining in regulation, in a 5-4 triumph versus the Montreal Canadiens Dec. 23. Werenski then recorded his second career four-assist performance (also Nov. 22, 2023 vs. CHI: 0-4—4), doing so in a 6‑2 victory against the Boston Bruins Dec. 27, before being held off the score sheet in a 4-0 loss to the Bruins Dec. 28. The 27-year-old Werenski has appeared in 37 total games this season (11-28—39), ranking among the top NHL defensemen in average time on ice (1st; 26:18), total time on ice (1st; 972:58), goals (t-1st; 11), power-play goals (2nd; 5), points (3rd; 39), power-play points (3rd; 17), game-winning goals (t-3rd; 2), assists (4th; 28) and power-play assists (t-5th; 12).

The Winnipeg Jets have placed forward Daniel Torgersson on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating the remaining years on his contract.

Winnipeg selected Torgersson, a 22-year-old out of Sweden, in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, but he has yet to play a game in the NHL.

Torgersson has spent the last four years with the AHL's Manitoba Moose and has failed to record a point in 12 games this season in the minors.

The left winger is in the final season of a three-year entry-level contract and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent his summer.

Goalie Cayden Primeau was placed on waivers Saturday with the purpose of loaning him to Laval of the American Hockey League.

Primeau, 25, is 2-3-1 in 11 games this season (seven starts) with a 4.70 goals-against average and 836 save percentage. The seventh-round pick by Montreal in the 2017 NHL Draft is 13-24-7 with a 3.69 GAA and .884 save percentage in 55 NHL games (45 starts).

Rookie Jakub Dobes made his first NHL start against the Florda Panthers on Saturday.

Forward Patrik Laine returned Saturday after leaving a 5-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday with an upper-body injury after playing 6:15 in the first period, and had been listed as day to day.

After missing the first 24 games of the season due to a knee injury suffered in a preseason game, Laine has eight goals -- all on the power play -- with an assist in 10 games.

{allcanada} Haydn Fleury is out week to week

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Haydn Fleury is out week to week for the Jets because of a lower-body injury.

"He's going to get re-evaluated, but at the end of the day, right now, it's not good," Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel said.

Fleury sustained the injury late in the second period of a 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday after being hit by forward Connor Dewar. He finished his shift but did not return to the game.

The defenseman tried to test out the injury Friday when the Jets held their first practice following the holiday break, but Arniel said "it didn't go very good."

Through 25 games in his first season with the Jets, Fleury has six assists while averaging 17:14 of ice time.

Logan Stanley will replace Fleury in the lineup against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; TVAS, SN360, CITY, SNW).

{allcanada} Hughes, Pettersson out for Canucks against Kraken

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson will not play for the Canucks against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday (4 p.m. ET; SNP, KONG, KING 5, KHN).

Hughes, who won the Norris Trophy as the League's top defenseman last season, leads the Canucks in scoring and is second among NHL defensemen with 42 points (eight goals, 34 assists) in 34 games this season. He was listed as questionable for Vancouver's most recent game Dec. 23 against the San Jose Sharks with an undisclosed injury but played 24:45 and finished with two assists in a 4-2 win.

"Obviously Hughes is one of a kind, right?" coach Rick Tocchet said Saturday. "... You're not going to replace the guy, but as a group I'd like to see us play some solid 'D,' especially without the puck."

Pettersson scored twice late in the second period against the Sharks, ending a six-game point drought, but only played one shift in the third. Tocchet said after the game he was "banged up" but didn't "think it's too bad."

Pettersson, Vancouver's No. 1 center, is second on the team with 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 34 games.

"It's hold the fort, next man mentality, that's the way we have to think," Tocchet said Friday. "Right now more than ever, and I know we've talked about it, it's our staples. We have to play as a team, and we need five percent more from everybody. That's really what it comes down to."

The game against San Jose was Hughes' 399th in the NHL; he has 51 goals and 324 career assists, the third-most assists in NHL history before 400 games for a defenseman behind Bobby Orr (358) and Paul Coffey (326).

Defenseman Erik Brannstrom, a healthy scratch the previous three games, will enter the lineup for Hughes, but Tocchet doesn't want him to do too much.

"You're not going to replace Quinn Hughes, and I don't need him trying to do things that press the envelope," Tocchet said Friday. "He's just got to play a simple game, to be honest. Go back for a puck, if you see the guy, give it to him, if there's a chance to join the rest, join it, walking the blue line, a guy like him, I want him to shoot the puck, he doesn't have to try to create too much on the blue line."
