DENVER (AP) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist, Stuart Skinner stopped 27 shots and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Saturday night.

Kasperi Kapanen, Vasily Podkolzin and Brett Kulak also scored as Edmonton won for the fourth time in five games.

Nikolai Kovalenko scored for Colorado, and Alexandar Georgiev had 28 saves.

Kovalenko had a power-play goal at 7:02 of the first period as the Avalanche went 1 for 5 with the man advantage.

Kapanen, playing his fourth game with the Oilers since being claimed off waivers on Nov. 19, tied it less than five minutes later. Connor McDavid brought the puck around the net, attracted the attention of much of the Colorado defense and hit an open Kapanen with a backhanded, cross-crease pass for his 19th assist of the season.

Podkolzin put the Oilers ahead for good with 6:12 left in the second period, scoring a goal for the third straight game. Troy Stecher had an assist on the play, extending his streak to three games.

Kulak made it 3-1 at 3:56 of the third and Nugent-Hopkins added an empty-netter with 1:32 to go.

Avalanche: Samuel Girard, playing in his 500th career game, had an assist on Kovalenko's goal, tying Erik Johnson for sixth in franchise history with 178 assists

Oilers: Edmonton improved to 3-11-1 in their last 15 meetings with the Avalanche, including the playoffs. It also ended a six-game losing streak (0-5-1) in the regular season in Colorado.

Podkolzin's goal proved to be the winning goal and strengthened the Oilers' grip on a game they largely controlled after the opening 10 minutes of the first period.

McDavid's assist gave him 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) in 22 career games against the Avalanche.

Avalanche visit Buffalo on Tuesday, and Oilers visit Vegas.

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LOS ANGELES (AP) Anze Kopitar, Trevor Moore and Kevin Fiala each had a goal and an assist, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2 on Saturday night for their season-high third consecutive win.

Alex Laferriere and Adrian Kempe also scored for Los Angeles, and David Rittich made 20 saves.

Kopitar snapped a tie 1:37 into the third period, finding himself alone at the top of the crease before finishing for his eighth goal of the season.

Kempe added a power-play goal with 3:46 remaining after Ottawa was called for its second too many men penalty. Moore closed it out with an empty-netter.

Ottawa's Adam Gaudette scored for the third straight game. Tim Stutzle also scored, and Anton Forsberg made 22 saves.

Senators: Gaudette is up to 12 goals in 22 games, matching his career high in 59 games with the Vancouver Canucks in 2019-20.

Kings: Moore returned after sitting out a 2-1 win at Anaheim on Friday because of an illness. But veteran fourth-liner Trevor Lewis was sidelined by a lower-body injury in the first period.

Kopitar swatted in Moore's rebound early in the third. The captain added a late assist to break a tie with Peter Stastný (1,239) for 42nd on the NHL career points list.

Stutzle (three goals, five assists) and Senators winger Drake Batherson (two goals, six assists) are each on six-game point streaks.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Michael Bunting and Kris Letang each scored a power-play goal and added two assists, as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Calgary Flames 6-2 on Saturday night.

Philip Tomasino also scored on the power play as Pittsburgh has goals with the man advantage in six of its last eight games. Rickard Rakell equaled a season-long three-game goal streak with his 10th of the season, while Anthony Beauvillier and Blake Lizotte also scored. Sidney Crosby extended a four-game point streak with an assist.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 30 saves for his first win since Nov. 16 against San Jose.

Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri added a goal and assist each in the third period for Calgary, which has allowed multiple power-play goals in an NHL-high six games this season. The Flames have won just three of 13 road games this season.

Dan Vladar stopped 37 shots for Calgary.

Flames: Calgary equaled a season-long four-game losing streak. The Flames won four straight and five of six prior to their current skid.

Penguins: Pittsburgh won three straight games for the first time this season. It's the Penguins' first three-game win streak since a four-game run in April. Pittsburgh lost eight of 10 prior to its current streak.

Calgary's Martin Pospisil hit a post in the first five minutes of the game, but Nedeljkovic allowed Pittsburgh to pull away from there. He made a highlight-reel glove save on Rasmus Andersson later in the period and on the same penalty kill in the second period, denied a net-mouth scramble and made a sharp pad save without his stick.

The Penguins are 33-2-1 in their last 36 games with three or more power-play goals. They scored three power-play goals for the first time since Jan. 24, 2023, against Florida.

The Penguins host Florida, while the Flames hosts Columbus on Tuesday.

{allcanada} Kakko's late goal lifts Rangers past Canadiens 4-3

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEW YORK (AP) Kaapo Kaako scored a power-play goal with 24 seconds left, and the New York Rangers stopped a five-game slide by topping the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Saturday.

Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Rangers, who got their first win since a 4-3 victory at Vancouver on Nov. 19. Adam Fox had two assists, and Jonathan Quick made 25 saves.

With Montreal's Kirby Dach serving a four-minute, high-sticking penalty, Kaako got his fourth goal of the season.

The Canadiens trailed 3-1 after two periods. But Cole Caufield scored his 14th goal 4:16 into the third and Nick Suzuki tied it at 14:07.

Trocheck tipped the puck past Montreal goaltender Sam Montembeault at 19:56 to put New York ahead after Panarin and Montreal's Mike Matheson scored earlier in the first.

Panarin put the Rangers ahead at 9:02, scoring on a 5-on-3 for New York's first power-play goal since Nov. 12 at home against Winnipeg.

Matheson tied it at 11:47.

Montembault made 24 saves for Montreal.

Canadiens: dropped to 3-7-1 on the road.

Rangers: Forwards Chris Kreider and Filip Chytil returned to the lineup. Kreider missed three games with an upper-body injury while Chytil was out for seven after colliding with teammate K'Andre Miller on Nov. 14. Reilly Smith and Jonny Brodzinski were scratched.

Seeking an early spark, New York captain Jacob Trouba fought Montreal's Josh Anderson 1:58 into the contest. It appeared to give the Rangers a collective jolt that was missing in recent games.

The Rangers are 11-1-0 when scoring first. It was the 1,700th home win in franchise history.

The Canadiens visit the Boston Bruins on Sunday. The Rangers host the New Jersey Devils on Monday.

{allcanada} Adebayo's triple-double leads Heat past Raptors

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MIAMI (AP) — Jimmy Butler scored 26 points, Tyler Herro added 23 and the Miami Heat beat the Toronto Raptors 121-111 on Friday night.

The Heat were 21 of 54 on 3-pointers in the game, the third-most attempts from beyond the arc in franchise history. Miami has taken 56 in a game twice.

Bam Adebayo had a triple-double for Miami — 14 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, the last of those boards coming after Butler airballed a jumper in the final seconds. Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 15 points for the Heat, who moved back over .500 at 9-8.

Scottie Barnes had a triple-double for Toronto with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. RJ Barrett scored 25 for Toronto and Jakob Poeltl — on 10-for-11 shooting — finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Takeaways

Raptors: Bruce Brown, who has yet to play this season following right knee surgery, continues conditioning toward his debut. "We don't want to rush anything. It's very important for him to get his health right, conditioning right," Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic said.

Heat: Butler is shooting 61% in his last five games — 35 for 57 in that span since he returned from a four-game absence with a sprained ankle.

Key moment

Toronto went on a 12-0 run to take a 79-77 lead. Miami immediately answered with a 19-2 run to take a 96-81 edge with 43.7 seconds left in the third quarter and never trailed again.

Key stat

It was the first game in Heat history where the team used at least 10 players and all of them took two or more shots from 3-point range. There had been three other games in club history where at least 10 Miami players took two 3s — but not everyone who played on those nights did so.

Up next

The teams face off again Sunday in Toronto.

{allcanada} Howden and Barbashev score twice as the Golden Knights beat NHL-leading Jets 4-3

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LAS VEGAS (AP) Brett Howden's second goal of the game late in third period proved to be the winner as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the NHL-leading Winnipeg Jets 4-3 on Friday night.

Howden's goal with 4:05 remaining broke a 3-all tie and came seven minutes after the Jets had tied the game.

Ivan Barbashev also had two goals, and Adin Hill made 22 saves for Vegas, which won for the fourth time in five games.

Cole Perfetti scored twice and Neal Pionk added a goal for Winnipeg, which lost for the third time in four games. Eric Comrie made 26 saves.

Jets: Perfetti and Pionk snapped extended goal droughts and helped keep Winnipeg in the game with their goals. Pefetti snapped an 11-game goal drought, while Pionk ended a 13-game span without a goal.

Golden Knights: Barbashev, who has at least one goal in three of the last four games, extended his point streak to five games. During the five-game stretch, Barbashev has four goals and six assists. He's tied with Pavel Dorofeyev for the team lead with 12 goals.

Just before Howden's go-ahead goal, William Karlsson took a pass in the neutral zone, and rather than push the puck ahead, skated cross ice into the offensive zone and shifted to the right side before passing to Howden. It was Karlsson's patience in holding the puck before his perfect no-look, backhand pass through the slot that led Howden to the one-timer.

Now in his 11th season, Karlsson played in his 700th career game. The 31-year-old Swedish-born skater is an original member of the Golden Knights, who entered the league in 2017. He has now played in 517 games for Vegas, ranking second in franchise history.

Winnipeg visits Dallas on Sunday, while Vegas host Utah on Saturday.

{allcanada} Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scores in OT to lift Oilers to 4-3 win over Utah

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored 1:18 into overtime and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Utah Hockey Club 4-3 on Friday night.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each tallied a goal and an assist, and Vasily Podkolzin also scored for the Oilers. Calvin Pickard stopped 28 shots.

Alexander Kerfoot and Logan Cooley scored in the first period for Utah, and Lawson Crouse tied the score in the third period. Karel Vejmelka had 28 saves.

Edmonton fell behind 2-0 late in the first before scoring three straight goals to take the lead. Podkolzin blasted the puck from 30 feet out to put Edmonton on board midway through the second, before Draisaitl and McDavid scored on power play goals 2 1/2 minutes apart to put the Oilers up 3-2 with 3:38 remaining in the middle period.

Crouse tied it for Utah at 3:42 of the third after snapping the puck over Pickard's shoulder.

Oilers: Edmonton didn't create a ton of scoring chances before the third period, but the Oilers were efficient in finding the right spots to attack during a pivotal second.

Utah: After struggling to stop two second-period power plays, Utah came through with a pivotal penalty kill in the final three minutes of regulation to force overtime.

Edmonton's offense recovered from a sluggish start late in the second when Draisaitl and McDavid both scored on power plays.

The Oilers generated three goals off a total of seven shots on goal in the second period.

Edmonton visits Colorado on Saturday to continue a three-game trip, and Utah visits Vegas.

{allcanada} Canada, Iceland draw in women's international soccer friendly in Spain

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MURCIA, Spain — Canada and Iceland played to a scoreless draw in a women's international soccer friendly Friday.

The sixth-ranked Canadian women now turn their attention to No. 19 South Korea on Tuesday, also at the Pinatar Arena.

Neither side produced much offence Friday in a game short on entertainment value. The few shots that were on target offered little challenge.

Canada outshot Iceland 14-10 (4-4 in shots on target) and had 57 per cent possession.

Interim Canada coach Cindy Tye saw positives in the first half and welcomed the clean sheet, saying Iceland came as advertised — "very physical and in transition."

"I thought we dealt with that well," she said.

Canada had more of the ball and territory in the first half, with Vanessa Gilles and Jayde Riviere providing some accurate passes from the Canadian backline, but that superiority did not lead to scoring chances.

Thirteenth-ranked Iceland looked to defend and counterattack, creating a good chance in the 20th minute only to see Canadian 'keeper Sabrina D'Angelo get to the ball first before colliding with Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir in front of goal. D'Angelo needed treatment on her leg later in the half because of the collision.

Canada had 55 per cent possession and outshot Iceland 5-3 (1-1 in shots on target) in the first half. But Iceland came on as the first half progressed.

Lysianne Proulx took over in goal to start the second half, earning her first senior cap. And the Juventus 'keeper was forced into an acrobatic leg save to deny Vilhjalmsdottir after an errant clearance in the 53rd minute.

Tye said D'Angelo came off because of the knock.

Jessie Fleming and Olivia Smith offered a spark for Canada when they came on in the 67th minute.

"We're going to see more of them in the next game," said Tye.

Deanne Rose followed off the bench, firing a shot over the Iceland crossbar in the 75th minute. Smith, a 20-year-old who plays her club football in England for Liverpool, shot just wide in the 84th minute.

The Canadian women tied No. 3 Spain 1-1 in the October international window, their first outing since exiting the Paris Olympics at the quarterfinal stage in early August. Iceland was coming off a pair of 2-1 defeats to the top-ranked United States, in Austin, Texas, and Nashville.

Iceland posted a 4-1-1 record in qualifying for the 2025 UEFA Women's Championship, finishing runner-up to fourth-ranked Germany in a group that also featured No. 17 Austria and No. 32 Poland. That included a 3-0 win over the visiting Germans which marked the first time Germany has been beaten by three goals in a competitive game since Brazil in the 2008 Olympic semifinals.

Canada's starting 11 went into the match with a combined 772 caps.

Fullback Ashley Lawrence, centre back Shelina Zadorsky and forwards Janine Beckie, Nichelle Prince and Adriana Leon accounted for 572 of the Canadian caps. Lawrence, earning her 140th cap, captained the side for the first time with Fleming starting on the bench.

Marie-Yasmine Alidou, who scored her first goal for Canada off the bench in the draw with Spain, started in the midfield and earned her fourth cap. The 29-year-old plays in Portugal for Benfica.

The Iceland starting 11 included players with Italy's Inter Milan, Germany's Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg, the Netherlands' Fortuna Sittard, Norway's Valerenga Fotball and Sweden's FC Rosengard.

Captain Glodís Perla Viggosdottir, who is also skipper of Bayern Munich, is the first Iceland player to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or.

Canada had played Iceland twice before, both at the Algarve Cup, with the teams playing to a scoreless draw in February 2019 and Canada winning 1-0 in March 2016.

The Canadian women are 8-0-7 this year, with three of those draws turning into penalty shootout losses to Germany (in the Paris Olympics quarterfinal) and the top-ranked United States (in the SheBelieves Cup final and the CONCACAF W Gold Cup semifinal).

Another draw produced a shootout win over Brazil (in the SheBelieves Cup semifinal).

Tye, who coaches the Canadian under-20 women, is in charge for the November friendlies while Canada Soccer searches for a permanent head coach.

The governing body has said head coach Bev Priestman will not be returning in the wake of the recent independent report into the Olympic drone-spying scandal. Priestman, assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joey Lombardi are currently serving one-year suspensions from FIFA, with Lombardi having already resigned his Canada Soccer position.

Canada is missing a handful of veterans in Spain.

Kadeisha Buchanan, Sydney Collins, Cloe Lacasse, Evelyne Viens, Jade Rose and Quinn are out injured with Jordyn Huitema unavailable due to personal reasons.

Fans were quick to send waves of congratulatory comments. The photo itself quickly earned more than 30,000 likes. But some of Auger-Aliassime's fellow tennis players also chimed in with some praise, too.

"Congratulations!" said ATP tennis player Hubert Hurkacz, in a short-and-sweet post.

"Finally, someone to share a Netflix password with forever," wrote Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas. "Congratulations Felix!"

Auger-Aliassime and Ghaib, 24, have been together since March 2019, around the start of his momentous career. He is still one of Canada's biggest tennis stars and currently stands ranked at No. 29 in the ATP. Ghaibi is an athlete, too. According to her numerous Instagram posts, she's an equestrian who has adored horses since her childhood. She's also competed in global equestrian events, including the 2017 Morrocan Royal Tour, an international showjumping competition.

The French Canadian pro and Ghaibi have kept a relatively low profile when it comes to their romantic relationship, so not much is known about them beyond the the occasional romantic posts they decide to share on social media. But the couple has made their fair share of notable public appearances throughout the years. They attended their first Met Gala in 2021, and Ghaibi has been by Auger-Aliassime's side at numerous events. She's also been a regular fixture at all of her now-fiancé's tennis matches and the two have also been featured in Netflix's tennis docuseries, Break Point.

Back on March 22, 2021, Auger-Aliassime marked the couple's two-year anniversary, with a carousel of romantic photos with Ghaibi on Instagram. "Well, I'm pretty happy our paths crossed two years ago 😘," he said in the post. "Two years of love and happiness. To many more in the future 🥰❤️."

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Conor Garland scored twice including the winning goal 3:59 into overtime to lead the Vancouver Canucks in a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

Garland also had an assist in the comeback victory. Quinn Hughes and Brock Boeser each had two assists. Boeser's pass set up Garland's go-ahead goal on a power play at 5:15 into the third.

Pius Suter added a goal in the third period and assisted on Jake DeBrusk's tying goal late in the second. Kevin Lankinen made 31 saves for the Canucks.

Dylan Cozens and Alex Tuch scored in a span of 1:39 late in the third period to bring the Sabres back from a 3-1 deficit. Bowen Byram also scored, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 18 shots.

Top-pair defenseman Filip Hronek did not play for Vancouver. He is being evaluated for an upper-body injury sustained during Wednesday night's loss at Pittsburgh, coach Rick Tocchet said.

Canucks: Vancouver has started 3-1-0 on a six-game road trip, improving to 9-2-0 away from home this season.

Sabres: Buffalo lost consecutive home games after winning three in a row on the road, but earned a point for the eighth time in 11 games.

Garland backhanded the winning goal past Luukkonen, gathering the rebound from Hughes' shot while kneeling at the right edge of the crease.

Garland has points in each of his past seven games, tying him for the longest active streak in the NHL. He has five goals and six assists during that stretch.

Sabres conclude back-to-back Saturday night at the New York Islanders, and the Canucks continue their road trip Sunday in Detroit.

{allcanada} Blue Jackets extend points streak to 5 games with a chippy 5-2 win over the Flames

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Adam Fantilli scored twice and the Columbus Blue Jackets extended their points streak to five games with a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames in a chippy game that included six fighting majors.

Kirill Marchenko had a goal and two assists, Zach Werenski scored his fourth goal in four games and had an assist, and Kent Johnson added a goal for Columbus (10-9-3), which has four straight wins over Calgary dating to last season. Dimitri Voronkhov contributed two assists, and Elvis Merzlikins made 27 stops.

Blake Coleman scored and Nazem Kadri added Calgary's first power-play goal against Columbus since Nov. 2, 2019. Dustin Wolf made 29 saves and picked up an assist on Kadri's goal.

The Flames (12-8-4) have lost three straight games overall and six in a row on the road.

Flames: In their first trip to Columbus since Johnny Gaudreau's death, an emotional Flames team came out fighting - literally and figuratively - but could not match the Blue Jackets' intensity or scoring.

Columbus: After a slow start in a loss Wednesday to Montreal, the Blue Jackets picked up their intensity from the opening drop and never looked back, scoring three unanswered goals.

Fantilli ended up in the penalty box at 2:47 of the third period after Merzlikins took a slashing penalty defending himself in the crease. Fantilli sprinted out of the box following Columbus' successful kill and scored nine seconds later, restoring a three-goal lead.

Werenski has points in seven consecutive games. His eight goals tie him for first among NHL defensemen this season.

The Flames visit Pittsburgh on Saturday, while the Blue Jackets travel to Chicago on Sunday.

{allcanada} Hyman hopeful to return during Oilers road trip

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Zach Hyman returned to Oilers practice Thursday and could return to the lineup at some point on an upcoming three-game road trip.

The forward has missed the past two games with an undisclosed injury, sustained in a 5-2 win at the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 19. Hyman left the game late in the second period after colliding with Senators defenseman Nick Jensen at the Ottawa blue line.

Edmonton returns from a five-day layoff when they play at the Utah Hockey Club on Friday (9 p.m. ET; Utah16, SNW, TVAS) before completing their road trip against the Colorado Avalanche (Saturday) and Vegas Golden Knights (Tuesday).

"Hyman will not be playing this weekend, and we're hopeful that he's playing in Vegas," Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said Friday.

Hyman has eight points (three goals, five assists) in 20 games this season. He had a career-best 77 points (54 goals, 23 assists) last season.

"I'm feeling alright," Hyman said following practice Thursday. "I'm obviously not playing right now so I'm getting better every day and just trying to get back out there. I don't really have a timeline, I'm going on the trip and taking it day by day."

Edmonton is 1-1-0 without Hyman, including a 6-2 win against the New York Rangers last Saturday.

"Like any player, I don't like missing games, I love playing hockey so I love being out there with the guys," Hyman said. "It helps when we win and it's more frustrating when we lose. It's out of my control and hoping to get better day-by-day."

{allcanada} Canucks' D Hronek being evaluated for undisclosed injury

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Vancouver Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek has been sidelined by an undisclosed injury.

Head coach Rick Tocchet says the Czech blue liner is still being evaluated for an after he went into the endboards hard late in Vancouver's 5-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.

Tocchet says he doesn't know how long Hronek will be missing from the lineup, but he won't be available for Friday's game against the Sabres in Buffalo.

The Canucks (11-7-3) recalled defenceman Mark Friedman from the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Canucks on Friday. Forward Arshdeep Bains was sent down in a corresponding move.

Hronek, 27, has been paired with captain Quinn Hughes this season and amassed eight points (one goal, eight assists) in 21 games.

It's the latest injury for a Vancouver team that's dealt with several notable absences this season. That includes all-star goalie Thatcher Demko, who remains sidelined with a knee injury, and centre J.T. Miller, who's on an indefinite leave for personal reasons.

"I think when you play in this league long enough, whether it's as a player or as a coach, you're going to have adversity and you've got to come together as a group," Tocchet said Friday. "It's a committee thing. You can't take it upon yourself as an individual to take over the team type of thing."

{allcanada} Canada ascends to highest-ever spot in latest FIFA ranking; Argentina remains No. 1

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Canada will finish out the year at a career-high in the FIFA rankings after climbing four places to No. 31.

The Canadian men had previously been as high as No. 33, achieved in February 2022 under John Herdman after turning heads with an unbeaten run in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying and being named the "Most Improved Side" in 2021 by FIFA.

Canada's lowest ranking was No. 122 in October 2014.

The Canadian men started 2024 in 48th place, falling to No. 50 in February, and were ranked 49th in the world when Jesse Marsch took over as coach in mid-May. Since then, the team has been on a steady climb — to No. 48, No. 40, No. 38, No. 35 and now No. 31.

The Canadians, who find themselves sandwiched between Hungary and Serbia in the FIFA rankings, made the latest move after 3-0 and 1-0 wins earlier this month over Suriname in CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal play. They accounted for two of the 192 games played during the recent international window.

The top five was unchanged with Argentina No. 1, followed by France, Spain, England and Brazil although Argentina's lead over France and Spain was reduced. Portugal and the Netherlands each moved up one spot to No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, with Belgium dropping to No. 8. Italy was unchanged at No. 9 with Germany rising one place to enter the top 10.

Uruguay rose three rungs to No. 11 while Colombia fell two places to No. 12.

The United States leapfrogged Mexico, rising two places to No. 16, to top CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. Mexico fell three places to No. 19 with Canada third. Suriname slipped two spots to No. 138.

Canada is set to meet Mexico in March in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal in Inglewood, Calif.

The Canadian men finish the year on a three-game winning streak, a five-game unbeaten run (4-0-1) and a 6-3-5 overall record, with one of those draws turning into a penalty shootout loss to Uruguay in the Copa America third-place game and another into a Copa win over Venezuela.

Romania (No. 38, up five), Norway (No. 43, up five) and Scotland (No. 45, up six) also made moves in the top 50.

Niger rose nine places to No. 122 after defeating Sudan 4-0 and winning 2-1at Ghana in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying,

Zambia (No. 87, up seven), Guyana (No. 154, up seven), Kosovo (No. 99, up two) and Comoros (No. 103, up five) also had good months.

No. 44 Nigeria, No. 128 Congo and No. 129 Sierra Leone all dropped eight places.

The Canadian women are currently ranked sixth by FIFA.
