The Montreal Canadiens expect to know more about the injuries to forward Patrik Laine and defenceman David Reinbacher and could provide an update on Monday or Tuesday, according to TSN's Kenzie Lalonde.

Laine, 26, left Saturday's preseason loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first period after having a knee-on-knee collision with Maple Leafs forward Cedric Pare.

The 6-foot-4 winger is entering his first season with Montreal after the team acquired him from the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenceman Jordan Harris and a draft pick on Aug. 19.

Laine only appeared in 18 games last season due to injuries and a stint in the NHL/NHLPA Players' Assistance Program.

Reinbacher, 19, left Saturday's game early in the first period with a lower-body injury and did not return to the contest.

The 6-foot-3 defenceman was drafted fifth overall by the Canadiens in the 2023 draft and appeared in 11 games with the AHL's Laval Rocket, recording two goals and five points.

{allcanada} Whitecaps tie Timbers, clinch playoff berth

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

VANCOUVER — It wasn't the way the Vancouver Whitecaps wanted to clinch a playoff spot.

The Whitecaps got an early goal from attacker Brian White but missed a couple of scoring chances late in the game to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday night that assured them a spot in the Major League Soccer playoffs.

White opened the scoring in the third minute. Early in the second half he bounced a shot off the post. Midfielder Andres Cubas also hit a post in extra time.

"I think we're a little disappointed not to come away with three points," said White, who scored his 15th goal of the season, tying the career high he set last year. "We hit the post twice in the second half.

"We'll take the point, we'll move forward, but I think we're disappointed."

Portland's Jonathan Rodriguez tied the match in the 44th minute. The Timbers pressured Vancouver for much of the game.

Despite the result head coach Vannie Sartini was blunt in his assessment.

Sartini said "Portland is a big hype all around the league," and that some people believe the Timbers "can be a dark horse" come the playoffs.

"We killed them," said Sartini. "We destroyed them. I'm just (upset) that we didn't win."

The early goal might have made the Whitecaps overconfident.

"I'm frustrated because it should have been 3-0 for us," said Sartini. "We were … too soft. Subconsciously I think we thought it was going to be easier.

"We didn't go through with the killer instinct we should have."

Vancouver (13-9-8) sits seventh in the MLS Western Conference with 47 points. The Whitecaps' draw, combined with FC Dallas losing 3-1 to Orlando City SC and Austin FC drawing 2-2 with Real Salt Lake, clinched Vancouver a playoff berth for the second consecutive season and the third time in the last seven years.

Portland (12-10-9) holds the ninth and final playoff spot in the West with 45 points.

White's goal came before some of the 25,902 fans at BC Place Stadium had found their seats.

Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter sent a pass from the corner to the front of the net. Levonte Johnson let the ball pass in front of him to White, who beat Portland goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, a former Whitecap.

A good play by midfielder Santiago Moreno and some bad Vancouver luck resulted in the Timbers tying the game near the end of the opening half.

Moreno threaded Rodriquez a pass through the Whitecaps' defence. Rodriquez took a left-footed shot from the side of the net that hit the foot of defender Bjorn Inge Utvik, deflecting the ball past the outstretched hand of goaltender Yohei Takaoka.

With their playoff spot secured, the Whitecaps hope to move up the standings and claim home-field advantage.

Vancouver sits just three points back of fourth-place Colorado and five points out of third place.

"It was always the goal to make the playoffs," said White. "More importantly, we want to be as high up in the standings as we can. There's more work to do."

Sartini would like to see his team finish in the top four, but thinks the conference is up for grabs.

"In the Western Conference, the seventh (place team) can win because there's not too much different between all the teams," he said. "We're going to fight to get in the top four. I think we are setting up ourselves nicely."

NOTES

It was a busy week for the Whitecaps who defeated Toronto FC Wednesday night to win their third consecutive Canadian Championship. Last Saturday Vancouver lost 4-2 to the Galaxy in Los Angeles. … Vancouver played without captain Ryan Gauld (strained knee) and wing back Ali Ahmed (quad injury). … The clubs split their previous two meetings this season with Vancouver winning 3-2 at home March 30 then losing 2-0 in Portland on June 22. … The Whitecaps play three of their remaining four games at home. They end the season on the road against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 19.

UP NEXT

The Whitecaps host the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday at BC Place Stadium.

Portland returns home to play Austin FC on Wednesday.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed one of their young training camp standouts to an NHL deal.

General manager Patrik Allvin announced on Sunday that the Canucks and forward Vilmer Alriksson agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Alriksson, 19, had a breakout season during his first year in the OHL, tallying a personal-best in goals (17) and assists (16) in 67 games with the Guelph Storm. During the Canucks' 2024 training camp, the Swede established himself as a strong, power forward with the ability to contribute offensively.

"Vilmer had a solid training camp and continues to develop and improve," Allvin said in a statement released by the team. "We really like his size, skating ability and skillset and we will continue to monitor his progress and work with him this year to help Vilmer get ready to take another step forward in his hockey career."

The Stockholm native was selected in the fourth round, 107th overall, by the Canucks in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Edmonton Oilers goalie Calvin Pickard left at 11:58 of the first period during a 5-4 preseason win against the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Saturday, following a collision in his crease.

Oilers forward Noah Philp ran into Pickard breaking up a pass in front intended for Kraken forward Yanni Gourde from Brandon Tanev with Seattle leading 2-1.

Pickard was knocked backwards and stayed down on the ice for a few moments. He got up, was assessed by the Oilers head athletic therapist T.D. Forss and went to the dressing room, replaced by Olivier Rodrigue. Coach Kris Knoblauch said after the game that there was no update on Pickard, who was to be evaluated, and that the team hoped to know more Sunday.

Pickard is expected to back up Stuart Skinner this season. He was 12-7-1 with a 2.45 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in 23 games (20 starts) last season, and 1-1 with a 2.21 GAA and .915 save percentage in three games (two starts) in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

{allcanada} Laine leaves Canadiens preseason game with injury

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Patrik Laine left the preseason game between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs with an apparent leg injury Saturday. The Canadiens announced he would not return.

The forward was injured in a knee-on-knee collision with Toronto forward Cedric Pare at 3:49 of the first period at Bell Centre in Montreal.

Laine was the key offseason addition by the Canadiens, who have finished last in the Atlantic Division each of the past three seasons, going 30-36-16 last season. The 26-year-old forward was acquired in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Aug. 19.

Laine suffered a broken clavicle last season and played just 18 games, the last on Dec. 14. He had nine points (six goals, three assists). Laine began receiving care from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program on Jan. 28 and was cleared from the program on July 26.

Montreal coach Martin St. Louis did not have an update on Laine's condition after the game.

"If you know you can get him back to his own standards, it's pretty exciting," St. Louis said. "And I feel we've done a good job of bringing him in and he's started to feel more comfortable, so it's hard to see him go down like that today. And hopefully it's not too serious."

Selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, Laine has 388 points (204 goals, 184 assists) in 480 NHL games with the Jets and Blue Jackets, and 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He scored an NHL career-high 44 goals with the Jets in 2017-18 after scoring 36 as a rookie in 2016-17. Laine is a six-time 20-goal scorer, most recently with 22 goals in 2022-23, but because of injuries and other issues has played 129 of 246 games the past three seasons (52.4 percent).

Canadiens defenseman prospect David Reinbacher also left the game Saturday shortly after the opening face-off following a hit along the boards by Toronto's Marshall Rifai. He had to be helped to the dressing room after going to the bench. The 19-year-old was selected by Montreal with the No. 5 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

{allcanada} Mullin stepping down as Football Canada president

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Jim Mullin is stepping away from Football Canada to concentrate on his post with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

Mullin confirmed Monday that after six years as Football Canada's president, he is resigning from the post. His decision came hours before the national governing body's annual general meeting.

"I believe now I can leave the organization in the capable hands of executive director Kevin McDonald, board chairperson Peter Baxter and the staff," said Mullin. "I wouldn't have left unless the organization's future had leaders who could steward it to a new professional function.

"We're taking an organization from the kitchen table to the boardroom table."

Mullin will remain as IFAF's general secretary.

McDonald was named Football Canada's full-time executive director in June, while Baxter became the organization's chairperson in August.

Before joining Football Canada, McDonald spent nearly 20 years with the CFL in various positions, including its vice-president of football operations.

"Someone who has a lot of experience as a leader in the CFL is who I want on the ground operating the organization on a day-to-day basis," Mullin said of McDonald. "I think he can take it to where it needs to be as one of the (national sports organizations) and as an Olympic NSO that stand with the best of them."

Baxter served as Wilfrid Laurier University's director of athletics and recreation for over 23 years before retiring in 2022.

He'll be Football Canada's president until bylaws are updated in October.

"Peter is someone with tremendous integrity who understands the challenges of governance in this space," Mullin said. "He'll be able to respond to the new landscapes that exist in sports in Canada with its various landmines and be able to diffuse them."

Mullin's decision comes three months after Canada captured a third straight and fourth overall gold medal at the IFAF world junior football championship in Edmonton. It was the first tournament staged in six years due to the global pandemic.

There were plenty of challenges in getting the event back on the field. Football Canada also had to add a second team to replace a country that withdrew.

"Quite frankly, many nations were skittish about jumping back into international tackle competition," Mullin said. "It takes money, it takes extraordinary planning and it helps when you have partners like (executive director) Tim Enger and Football Alberta to put all of that planning into it."

The organization navigated a coaching change ahead of the tournament, promoting Warren Craney to head coach of Canada 1. He replaced Steve Sumarah, who led the program to gold in 2018.

"There were many changes we needed to put through from a Football Canada side and identifying Warren Craney to take over turned out to be the right choice," Mullin said. "I get to leave my final year with a world championship, which is pretty nice."

Mullin spent eight years with Football Canada, two on its board and six as president. He was first elected to the position in 2019 before being voted in for a second term in 2022.

Mullin is the fourth person to serve multiple stints as president in Football Canada's 142-year history. A big part of the job was trying to establish consensus on national matters within an organization that consists of multiple provincial bodies.

During his time with Football Canada and IFAF, Mullin also worked to get flag football into the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The sport's inclusion is big for football globally, he said.

Mullin also helped Football Canada modernize its operation, comply with the Canadian Sports Governance Code, establish a reserve fund and develop Indigenous football in the country.

"Something I did coming out of the gate when I was voted in was creating a larger tent for football in Canada," he said. "It wasn't just about the (provincial sports organizations), it was about the sport in general so bringing in a path for associate members was extremely important.

"Working with Indigenous leaders, over quite frankly a long period of time, to be there to help them get Indigenous Football Canada started and off the ground was very rewarding. Working with (president/CEO) Kevin Hart and then seeing him and his people deliver that and create something I believe that's sustainable over the long-term is another culture change within the sport."

However, Mullin admits he'll leave Football Canada with a regret.

"The core regret is we had to be reactive during the pandemic and that really took us away from our plan," he said. "At the same time, I wish the reforms we brought forward in the last 18 months were brought along a lot sooner because we'd be ahead on things."

{allcanada} Sources: Raptors to retire Vince Carter’s jersey on Nov. 2

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TORONTO – Nearly 26 years after scoring the first-ever basket at Scotiabank Arena, formerly Air Canada Centre, Vince Carter will become the first Toronto Raptors player to have his jersey go into the rafters.

The Raptors are planning to retire Carter's No. 15 when they host the Sacramento Kings on Nov. 2, sources tell TSN. This marks the first jersey retirement for the franchise, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary season in 2024-25.

It's part of a busy few months for the 47-year-old from Daytona Beach, Fla., who will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in October and will also have his jersey retired by the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 25.

Carter played for eight teams in 22 NBA seasons, setting a league record for longevity (LeBron James will match the mark this fall). He spent his prime years with the Nets in New Jersey, and his deepest playoff run came with Orlando, but he's most commonly associated with Toronto, where his legendary career began.

The Raptors acquired the University of North Carolina swingman on draft night in 1998. With his jaw-dropping dunks, Carter quickly became one of the game's most popular and dynamic young stars. Dubbed "Half-Man/Half-Amazing", he would win Rookie of the Year, lead Toronto to its first postseason appearance as a sophomore, and then to its first playoff series victory in his third campaign.

His electrifying Dunk Contest performance in Oakland – which was 25 years ago this coming February – and iconic showdown with Allen Iverson in the 2001 seven-game second-round series against Philadelphia were seminal moments for basketball fans throughout the country.

Carter's impact is widely credited for inspiring the rapid growth of the sport in Canada, as well as putting a Raptors organization that was still in its infancy on the NBA map. He's still fourth on the team's all-time scoring list (9,420 points) despite ranking 12th in games played.

Still, his legacy remains complicated. The latter half of his seven-season tenure was mired by injury and controversy, and ultimately a trade request leading to the ill-fated deal that sent him to New Jersey for pennies on the dollar.

In just a few years, Carter went from being the franchise's greatest hero to its most notorious villain. With each visit back to Toronto, he returned to relentless boos from a spurned fan base that held him responsible for the ugly breakup.

It wasn't until 2014, a decade after the trade, that the perception began to shift. Carter, then a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, was moved to tears as boos turned to cheers and eventually a standing ovation when the Raptors honoured him with a tribute video for their 20th anniversary.

He has said that he plans to represent Toronto when he is officially enshrined as a Hall of Famer the weekend of Oct. 12. The relationship between player and fanbase, or player and organization, has healed considerably in recent years – winning a title in 2019 didn't hurt – but the decision to retire Carter's jersey will be a polarizing one. Even internally, it wasn't a slam dunk.

There were high-ranking members of the organization who maintained that Kyle Lowry should be the first to receive the honour, having spent nearly a decade with the club, been the face of its most successful era, and led it to a championship.

However, Lowry is about to begin his 19th NBA season; he's in the back nine of his career, but his retirement is at least a few years off. With Carter's Hall of Fame induction coinciding with the Raptors' 30th season, the timing felt right and there was a strong push made on his behalf. It gained steam in May when the Nets announced that they would be retiring Carter's jersey.

Once the decision was made, the Raptors wanted to find a date early in the season, which would give them a monumental event to help kick off their anniversary celebrations, while also allowing them to beat Brooklyn to the punch. The Oct. 25 game against Lowry's 76ers was considered.

The Nov. 2 date checked off a few boxes. It's a Saturday night contest just two weeks and seven games into the season. The opponent, Sacramento, is one of Carter's former teams and won't draw too much attention away from the festivities (Toronto hosts James and the Lakers the night before).

It also means that DeMar DeRozan – who signed with the Kings over the summer and will one day have his No. 10 immortalized next to Carter's No. 15 and Lowry's No. 7 – will be in attendance for the ceremony.

The NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, who share the building with the Raptors, have honoured 19 players with jersey retirements. Currently, the only Raptors banners hanging atop Scotiabank Arena commemorate the franchise's inaugural season, division wins, conference title, and championship. Soon, Carter's No. 15 will join them.

{allcanada} Five WHL clubs submit bids to host 2026 Memorial Cup

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Canadian Hockey League announced Monday that five Western Hockey League clubs - the Brandon Wheat Kings, Kelowna Rockets, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers, and Spokane Chiefs - have officially submitted their formal written bids in an effort to secure the hosting rights for the 2026 Memorial Cup.

The five WHL clubs vying to host the 2026 Memorial Cup represent the largest number of CHL teams bidding for the event since six Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League franchises sought to host the 2009 Memorial Cup.

"We are excited to have received bids from five outstanding WHL franchises to host this event in 2026, said CHL president Dan MacKenzie in a statement. "Featuring the best junior hockey teams in the world, the Memorial Cup is a world-class event that provides a host city with a unique opportunity to both showcase its community and create an impactful legacy that can be felt for years after the event.

"With five bidding WHL cities, it is clear the interest is high in hosting this one-of-a-kind tournament and we can't wait to identify which WHL team will have that privilege in 2026."

All five franchises from the WHL were required to submit their bid documents ahead of last Friday's deadline. They will now be asked to formally present their bid before a selection committee in the weeks to come. Each of the bids will be evaluated based on four categories: business operations, local atmosphere/community engagement, event logistics, and hockey operations. Following the evaluation process, the winning bid is tentatively scheduled to be announced by the end of December.

"The WHL is excited to have five Clubs vying for the opportunity to host the 2026 Memorial Cup, said WHL commissioner Dan Near in a statement. "The tremendous interest from our five Clubs is indicative of competitive balance on and off the ice within the WHL. Memorial Cups hosted by WHL Clubs are some of the most memorable and entertaining in recent memory and we are eager to deliver that same western hospitality once again in 2026. We look forward to the bid review process and wish the best of luck to the Brandon Wheat Kings, Kelowna Rockets, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers, and Spokane Chiefs."

Next year's 2025 Memorial Cup will take place in Rimouski, Québec from May 22 to June 1, 2025 - the return of the CHL's championship event to the province of Québec for what will be the first time in 10 years.

Nathan Rourke will remain the starting quarterback for the BC Lions, according to TSN's Farhan Lalji. Rourke was benched at halftime of the team's 33-17 loss to the Toronto Argonauts in Week 15 after completing 6-of-12 passes for 110 yards and rushing for a nine-yard touchdown.

Vernon Adams Jr. came on for the second half and completed 4-of-7 passes for 75 yards and an interception.

The Lions will take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday coming off their Week 16 bye.

The Lions re-signed Rourke in early August while Adams was recovering from the injury.

Rourke, 26, has played five game since returning from his stint in the NFL, passing for 1,099 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions. He spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons in his season-and-a-half of exploring NFL options.

EDMONTON -- Scott Arniel has transitioned nicely as coach of the Winnipeg Jets.

Arniel was promoted to replace Rick Bowness on May 24 after he was Winnipeg's associate coach for two seasons. Bowness, 69, retired shortly after the Jets were eliminated in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference First Round by the Colorado Avalanche in five games. Bowness coached Winnipeg for two seasons and worked in the NHL for 38 seasons.

"I'm starting to bring my own ideas and thoughts in," Arniel said Sunday. "We've been building something here for the last couple of years and I'm able to continue to move forward with that. 'Bones' was great for me in the sense that he gave me a lot of responsibility the last couple of years, so the transition and all that has been pretty smooth."

Arniel stepped in on three occasions over those two seasons for Bowness, who had to take leave for health and family reasons. The Jets went 15-7-3 over that time, including 10-5-2 last season when Bowness had to leave after his wife, Judy, suffered a seizure and was hospitalized.

Winnipeg finished second in the Central Division last season (52-24-6).

"I got to be able to coach when Rick was away, which was unfortunate, but I got to be behind the bench, so the players know me," said Arniel, who turned 62 on Sept. 17. "So, I [have] a relationship, so it's not like I'm coming into an organization where I don't know anybody."

Arniel has worked as an assistant in the NHL since joining the Buffalo Sabres in 2002. He was hired as coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2010 and had a 34-35-13 record in his first season and was fired after 41 games of his second season after going 11-25-5.

Since then, Arniel has worked in the Vancouver Canucks organization as their American Hockey League coach in Chicago, and as an assistant with the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals.

"With Bones retiring, it was a great, natural progression for 'Arnie,'" Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said this summer. "Having said that, he had to earn that right and went through a different kind of interview process that we did with Bones, but we went through an interview process. Arnie had the lead because of all the relationships he had built, so we're excited about that."

As a Jets associate, Arniel was often the go-between for players and Bowness. He is comfortable now as coach and will have assistants Marty Johnston, Davis Payne, Dean Chynoweth and Wade Flaherty to lean on.

"Scotty is a lot younger than Bones, and I think he probably learned a lot from Bones over the last few years," Jets forward Nino Niederreiter said at the NHL European Players Media Tour in Prague, Czechia. "He knows the team very well, when Bones had to leave for a little bit, he took over and I think he did a very good job with it."

Expectations will be high for Arniel and the Jets this season. They will be looking to build on a strong 2023-24 regular season, when Winnipeg briefly held first place in the NHL standings for the first time in franchise history.

"It's a tough league and you have to eliminate eight teams in the West, and that's a tough task every year -- it doesn't matter what team you are," Arniel said. "Our division has gotten stronger, there are teams that have certainly made some big improvements, so you have to put the work in. What we did last year, our 82 games [were] pretty rewarding, we didn't like what happened in the playoffs, but we bought in to how we had to play especially without the puck and the last two years we've really improved our defending.

"We have a great goalie (Connor Hellebuyck) that's helped us, and we have a great group that's played together for a while and now we have some young guys that will step in and probably a be a part of that mix. We have to make sure we do all the right things early on in the year to make sure we get off to a good start."

The Jets lost their first two preseason games, 5-2 against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday and 3-2 in overtime at the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. Arniel used a young, inexperienced lineup in each but will begin utilizing his veterans as the preseason continues, perhaps as early as Wednesday against the Oilers at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg (8 p.m. ET).

"It's been awesome, I know the guys love him," Jets forward Dominic Toninato said. "He stepped in last year for a bit and did heck of a job. We kind of knew what to expect with that. The guys love him, and it should be a good year.

"It's been a smooth transition. I think he's been doing a great job so far, and we're only going to continue to keep building and hope we have a great season."

Kirby Dach will play his first game in nearly a year when the Canadiens host the Philadelphia Flyers at Bell Centre in Montreal on Monday (7 p.m. ET).

The 23-year-old center sustained a season-ending knee injury in the Canadiens' second game last season on Oct. 14, 2023, against the Chicago Blackhawks. Dach will play on a line with Patrik Laine and Alex Newhook.

"I'm definitely looking still to take steps personally and making sure that I feel good and confident in my game," Dach said, "and can get it back to a place where I felt it was last year and keep taking steps from that.

"As a line, I think just building chemistry and working together and being in these games now against other teams you're going to start to find spacing with each other and where each other is going to be on the ice."

The No. 3 pick at the 2019 NHL Draft by the Blackhawks, Dach has 99 points (33 goals, 66 assists) in 212 regular-season games with Montreal and Chicago, and six points (one goal, five assists) in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Montreal's Félix Auger-Aliassime will lead the Canadian team into the Davis Cup Final 8, with Frank Dancevic returning as captain.

Auger-Aliassime will once again be joined by Denis Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., Montreal's Gabriel Diallo, Alexis Galarneau, of Laval, Que., and Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., in the event taking place, Nov. 19-24 in Malaga, Spain.

It's the same squad that posted a 7-2 match record during the tournament's group stage in Manchester, England, earlier this month.

Canada, which won the tournament in 2022, will meet three-time champion Germany in the quarterfinals in Spain.

Defending champion Italy will play Argentina, the United States will meet Australia and Spain will take on the Netherlands.

"This group has shown time and again that it can compete at the highest level," Dancevic said. "It's the same five players that brought home the Davis Cup trophy for the very first time in 2022 and enjoyed a great week in Manchester to seal our place in this year's quarterfinals. So, we will head to Malaga knowing we have tough matches ahead of us, but with confidence that we can reach our goal."

Auger-Aliassime, ranked 21st in the world by the ATP, will represent Canada for the eighth time in the Davis Cup, where he boasts a career record of 13 wins and 4 losses.

Shapovalov will make his 11th appearance in the Davis Cup, with a record of 18 wins and 10 losses.

Diallo, the youngest team member at 22, will participate in the Davis Cup for the seventh time, while Galarneau, 25, has been named to the Canadian team for the eighth time.

The 34-year-old Pospisil, the second most prolific Canadian in Davis Cup history, will represent the country for the 28th time, entering Malaga with a record of 32 wins and 27 losses in 34 career ties.

{allcanada} Bianca Andreescu: Push for gender equity in tennis 'a beautiful thing'

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Bianca Andreescu knows a significant part of her job takes place away from the tennis court, in moments she may not even have a racket in her hand.

Whether she's signing a ball or writing a book for kids, the Canadian tennis star wants to be an inspiration for the next generation and help make her sport better for the girls who'll follow.

The push for gender equity in tennis — particularly in terms of what athletes are paid — is a "beautiful thing," Andreescu said.

"In my experience, obviously, I haven't got paid in many tournaments just like the men, but I know that it's getting better," said the former U.S. Open winner.

"We do have to thank Billie Jean King for that, because she's the one that paved the way. And I think our responsibility as athletes now, men or women, it's just to get that to, I guess, perfection."

It's been more than 50 years since tennis legend and feminist icon King trounced Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes exhibition match, but disparities between men's and women's funding and accessibility still reign through many sports.

"There will always be work to do in this space because it's not even just for women and for girls, it's other equity-deserving groups that need accessibility to sport," said Eva Havaris, a senior vice-president with Tennis Canada. "So this work will just always be ongoing."

Andreescu's latest push for change comes in the form of a Tennis Canada campaign on gender equity.

The new video talks about colours in the sport, from traditional tennis whites to whether a ball is green or yellow. Images then shift to a lilac purple colour — the colour many groups have previously used to showcase their support for gender equity — and talk turns to how women athletes still earn less than their male counterparts.

On the screen, Andreescu sits in a purple umpires chair, flexing.

The scene was filmed during last summer's National Bank Open in Toronto, where Tennis Canada and the tournament organizers opted to paint the chairs in an effort to create conversation around gender equity.

"People were super interested by it. It created a lot of conversation," Havaris said. "Certainly in tennis, a lot of things are sort of white. So when people saw this, it was like, 'Oh, what's that about?' It prompted people to talk about it."

Andreescu was just finishing up practice when a film crew nearby asked if she wanted to take part.

"I said, 'Of course.' I mean something like this, this is what I stand for," said the 24-year-old from Mississauga, Ont. "So it turned out very beautifully, and I think it's done really well."

The National Bank Open is one of the tournaments working to pay equity between athletes on the men's and women's sides.

In 2025, the tournament's WTA prize money is set to reach nearly 60 per cent of the ATP pot as both events expand to 12-day main draw formats. And in 2027, the women's winner will take home as much as the men's.

The total WTA prize money at the NBO in 2027 is expected to be at least US$10 million — a 350 per cent increase over the award in 2023.

"It's definitely taken a while," said Andreescu, who won the tournament in 2019. "But I mean, the more that we can just continue, creating initiatives like (the current campaign) and speaking up about it, it'll be amazing to witness that. So I'm very grateful."

Tennis Canada's latest push for gender equity comes at a time when women's sports are gaining new ground — and eyeballs — across the world.

The Professional Women's Hockey League set multiple records for attendance in its inaugural season, and the WNBA announced in May that it is expanding to Toronto.

"I think even just people showing up for women's sport now, and the sizes of the audience and the viewership, it just tells you so much about its facts," Havaris said. "The sports speak for themselves, the athletes speak for themselves and their ability. And now it's a lot more accessible and a lot more visible."

Andreescu has been soaking up women's sports, too. She went to her first WNBA game in New York recently and was amazed by the play of Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu.

The tennis sensation said she's had opportunities to meet women play at the highest levels in their sports, including Canadian hockey great Marie-Philip Poulin, and has always found their conversations about the similarities and challenges they face to be enlightening.

Having those talks is crucial to the continued growth of women's sports, Andreescu said.

"Only us women in sport can truly, truly relate to one another," she said. "So it's nice to have that kind of connection."
