NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie Alonso Martínez scored a goal in each half and Matt Freese had three saves to lead New York City FC to a 2-0 victory over CF Montreal on Wednesday night.

Martínez took a pass from fellow rookie Hannes Wolf in the 9th minute and connected with a right-footed shot from the center of the box for the only goal Freese would need on the way to his fourth clean sheet of the season for New York City (11-8-2).

Martínez netted his eighth goal of the campaign — in the 56th minute — with assists from Wolf and James Sands. Wolf has six assists on the season, while Sands' helper was his second and the fourth of his career.

Martínez had not scored since he subbed in and finished with a hat trick in a 5-1 road victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on the last day of May. It was the seventh start and 14th appearance for Martínez, who did not have a goal contribution in three appearances covering 30 minutes last season.

Jonathan Sirois saved five shots in goal for Montreal (5-9-7).

NYCFC leads the all-time series 12-2-5. Montreal last earned a point against NYCFC in a scoreless draw at Yankee Stadium on April 6, 2019.

Montreal has won just twice in its last 11 road matches, going 0-4-2 in the last six. The club has been outscored 15-3 in the four losses.

NYCFC hits the road for its next four matches after improving to 8-3-1 at home this season.

Montreal returns home to play the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. New York City travels to play Austin FC on Saturday.

{allcanada} Toronto FC can't hold onto early lead against Orlando, fall to fifth straight loss

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TORONTO — John Herdman had a blunt message after Toronto FC slumped to its fifth straight loss and saw its winless slide stretch to eight games (0-6-2).

"This has to be a turning point for the club tonight. I said that to the players after the game," Herdman said after watching Orlando City SC rally from an early deficit Wednesday to dispatch TFC 2-1. "It has to be the turning point.

"There's got to be some hard conversations in the next two days. Starting with all of us looking at ourselves in the mirror."

Derrick Etienne Jr. scored for Toronto, which led after five minutes but went into halftime trailing 2-1. Martin Ojeda scored for Orlando, which also benefited from an own goal by Toronto defender Nicksoen Gomis.

Herdman was left wondering about a 20-minute period in the first half that saw Toronto's drive diminish, allowing Orlando back into the game and hand Toronto its fifth defeat in its last six home league matches.

"It's the story of TFC this season," he lamented. "These 20-minute periods, where, for whatever reason, whether we're playing at home or away, there's just not that desire or intensity."

TFC, outscored 13-4 during the losing streak, launched 13 shots Wednesday but managed just one shot on target. Orlando managed just three on target.

It doesn't get any easier with an away game Saturday at reigning champion Columbus. And Etienne hobbled off in the 67th minute with what could be the latest in a line of TFC hamstring injuries.

While Toronto pressed hard late in the game, it couldn't pull even with Herdman saying the team will be looking for help when the transfer window opens again.

The victory pulled Orlando (6-9-6) even on points with Toronto (7-12-3) with a game in hand.

Orlando arrived with its own problems, coming off a 4-2 loss at New York City FC and having won just one of its previous seven outings (1-4-2).

It was a game short on entertainment for the announced crowd of 23,877 at BMO Field but with a fair degree of niggle, especially in the second half, with seven yellow cards (with four going to TFC).

Despite a string of early giveaways, Toronto went ahead in the fifth minute through Etienne. Federico Bernardeschi, named to the MLS all-star game earlier in the week, found fellow wingback Raoul Petretta with a long ball at the back post. Petretta headed the ball back across goal and Etienne, with the Orlando defence in disarray, hammered it home from close range for his second goal in Toronto colours.

Orlando, with Ojeda pulling the strings, began to find its footing and tied the game in the 27th minute. Facundo Torres slipped the ball to Colombian Ivan Angulo, who beat Bernardeschi to send in a fine cross that an unmarked Ojeda, a designated player from Argentina, headed home for his second of the season.

Lorenzo Insigne, starved of the ball, finally got his chance in the 39th minute, bending a shot from distance just wide of the Orlando goalpost. But the Italian star was a bystander for long stretches of the half.

Orlando kept probing and went ahead in the 45th minute when Torres's cross deflected off Gomis's leg past goalkeeper Sean Johnson. It took just two Orlando passes to cover the Toronto half of the field with seven defenders in the Toronto penalty box when the goal was scored.

Ojeda was substituted in the 69th minute and did not look happy about it. Toronto midfielder Deybi Flores was cautioned two minutes later, earning a suspension for yellow card accumulation.

Kosi Thompson had a chance to tie the game in stoppage time but his shot rattled off the crossbar. Luis Muriel then shot wide at the other end.

Both teams had their starting goalkeepers back from international duty at Copa America — Johnson with the U.S. and Pedro Gallese, along with midfielder Wilder Cartagena, from Peru.

Johnson had fans' hearts in their mouth in the 12th minute when he misplayed the ball, which almost rolled into the Toronto goal. But the veteran 'keeper calmly retrieved it and then dribbled past an Orlando attacker before sending the ball up the pitch

Toronto captain/midfielder Jonathan Osorio and fullback/wingback Richie Laryea remain at Copa America with Canada advancing to the knockout round.

Herdman made three changes to the starting 11 beaten 2-1 on a freak 97th-minute goal on the weekend in Atlanta with Johnson, Thompson and Aime Mabika slotting in.

TFC's injury list includes wingback Tyrese Spicer and midfielders Alonso Coello and Brandon Servania. Centre back Kevin Long was suspended for yellow card accumulation.

Orlando is now undefeated in its last five trips to BMO Field (3-0-2), last losing there in May 2018.

{allcanada} Lions linebacker Woods suffers season-ending knee injury

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

SURREY, B.C. — A key defensive weapon for the B.C. Lions has had his season cut short by a knee injury.

Head coach and co-general manager Rick Campbell confirmed Wednesday that linebacker Josh Woods is done for the year. The 26-year-old from Ontario, Calif., went down in the first half of B.C.'s victory over the Edmonton Elks on Thursday and had to be carted off the field.

"He's going to require knee surgery and he'll be out for the year," Campbell said at the team's training facility in Surrey, B.C. "We'll fully support him. And he's going to be around here rehabbing and doing his thing, contributing in any way that he can. We will absolutely miss him."

Woods posted on social media, saying there was no need for "any pity or sympathy."

"I'm at peace and motivated," he wrote. "I've been through it before and I know I can do it again."

The six-foot-two, 234-pound athlete had a strong start to the campaign, registering 22 total tackles in B.C.'s first three games of the season. He sits among the top-10 CFL players in that category so far this year.

The Lions won't be able to completely fill Woods' hole in the lineup, Campbell said, but his teammates will come together to keep the defence strong.

"We're very lucky in the fact we have a lot of veteran linebackers here and guys that have played a lot of football," he said. "All those guys are guys that have been around the block and know how to play, so they're going to carry the load for us."

One player who will miss having Woods on the field is B.C. linebacker Ben Hladik. The duo both started with the Lions in 2021 and have steadily worked their way up the depth chart over the past three seasons.

"We've been waiting to play together for three years now," Hladik said. "We kind of came together in our first year and now we got the opportunity. But he'll be back next year. We'll get another chance to do it, hopefully."

Hladik leads the Lions with 27 total tackles, including three for a loss. He also had a big interception in B.C.'s 26-17 win over the Calgary Stampeders on June 15.

The 25-year-old Canadian credits Woods with helping him find another level to his game.

"He sets the tone out there," said the six-foot-four, 235-pound Hladik. "I see him doing it and I just want to do it too. I just want to be more physical when I see him being physical out there."

Defence has been an important part of the Lions' early season success.

B.C. has given up an average of 343 offensive yards per game, the second fewest in the CFL behind the undefeated Montreal Alouettes (332).

The defensive corps has had a knack for making plays all year, said Lions quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.

"They're all together, they're communicating on the field. They're aligned right and doing what they need to do," he said. "They're just doing what they're supposed to do, getting us the ball back and giving us the opportunity to go down and score with the ball. So shout-out to the defence."

The Lions will look to stretch a three-game win streak on Sunday when they visit the struggling Tiger-Cats (0-4) in Hamilton.

The Ticats are a team with a lot of veteran players on their secondary who know how to confuse quarterbacks, Adams said.

"That's a good team, man," he said. "Whatever their record is, it doesn't matter. They've been in every game they've played."

{allcanada} Levshunov adjusting at Blackhawks development camp

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

CHICAGO -- Artyom Levshunov strode to the lectern, the affable defenseman leaning his forearms on it while he addressed the media.

"So far, so good," the No. 2 pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft said during their development camp on Wednesday. "No, it's good. We're training, we're meeting everybody."

For the second straight summer, the Blackhawks' development camp is solely off-ice. There's no skating, practices or scrimmages. So Levshunov is taking the opportunity to get acquainted with some potential future teammates, take some cooking lessons, get in some off-ice workouts and decompress after a hectic schedule around the draft last weekend in Las Vegas.

"I was [nervous]. It was a lot of work for me, getting drafted the past month, it was a little bit of a busy time for me, but it was fun," he said. "We were in Vegas, you know? It was at Sphere, it was amazing. It was unforgettable moment for me, and it was a good time."

Levshunov was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year and was also on the All-Big Ten First Team and All-Freshman Team for Michigan State. He was the third-youngest player in men's college hockey, ranked second nationally among freshmen at his position and tied for 10th among all defensemen with 35 points (nine goals, 26 assists) in 38 games.

A right-handed shot, Levshunov led the Big Ten with a plus-27 rating while playing a top defense pair all season.

Blackhawks assistant general manager of player development Mark Eaton watched Levshunov quite a bit at Michigan State.

"Good size, great skater, and he has that 'it' factor where he wants the puck, he wants to be a difference maker, he wants to be out there in the most important times of games," he said.

"And he's not a liability defensively. I think that's a key for defensemen, that he has that 200-foot game. So, nothing but everything to like about him."

Artyom Levshunov drafted by Chicago Blackhawks

Levshunov is already familiar with a couple of other Blackhawks prospects with Big 10 hockey ties. That includes center Oliver Moore, the No. 19 pick by Chicago at the 2023 NHL Draft and defenseman Sam Rinzel, their No. 22 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. Both play for the University of Minnesota.

"He's big, he's mobile, he's a two-way defenseman," Rinzel said. "You've got to be aware on the ice obviously when we play them. He likes to be sneaky, so wherever he is, you've got to play attention. Especially wingers or forwards, they've got to be dialed in wherever he's at, all over the ice."

Moore said Levshunov's offensive mindedness is what you first notice about him.

"In our pre-scouts and stuff, that's what we had on him: really offensive, jumps in the play but he's smart with it," Moore said. "Obviously, his skating ability and how big he is, he can close really well. He's an all-around player and I think the Blackhawks are pumped to have him, for sure."

Will the Blackhawks have him this season, either in Chicago or Rockford, their American Hockey League affiliate? Levshunov reiterated on Wednesday that he hasn't decided if he's going back to Michigan State. He needs to talk with his family, the Blackhawks and his agent.

Eaton said there would be an advantage to having Levhsunov in Rockford.

"Obviously being able to be hands-on every single day is a huge bonus," he said. "That is the line that we walk with our amateur prospects, is the realization that they all play for other coaches. They all play in different systems.

"So if we have the ability to have him in house and our great staff in Rockford, our development staff working with him on a daily basis, to start to close that gap between where he is and where he needs to go, I think it's only a bonus."

Where Levshunov ends up in the fall remains to be seen, but until decisions are made, he'll enjoy his week at development camp.

"We try to know each other better, try to meet with each other," he said of his fellow prospects. "It's a good experience for me, more of a learning week here, so it's good for our development."

{allcanada} UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals lead into Canada vs. Venezuela Friday on TSN

--

The biggest day yet of TSN's Summer of Soccer will take place Friday as UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals begin and lead into Canada's first-ever knockout game at the Copa America tournament.

Play begins at Noon ET/9 a.m. PT as hosts Germany face powerhouse Spain in the first quarter-final at the European championships.

Germany went 2-1-0 in the group round before dispatching Denmark with a 2-0 victory in the Round of 16 on Saturday. Spain has won each of their four games at the tournament so far and rolled past Georgia 4-1 after trailing early in their first knockout-round match.

The match pins the two highest-scoring teams at the tournament against each other. Leading with 10 goals, Germany's numbers are buoyed by a 5-1 victory over Scotland in their opener, while Spain thrashed Croatia 3-0 before settling 1-0 wins over Italy and Albania to sit at nine goals through four games.

Watch Germany vs. Spain at Noon ET/9 a.m. PT Friday on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

Portugal and France will meet in the next quarter-final on Friday at 3 p.m. ET/Noon PT with two superstar strikers going head-to-head.

Kylian Mbappe will go up against Cristiano Ronaldo in what could be the 39-year-old's last ever game at a European championship.

"It is, without doubt, my last European Championship," Ronaldo said Tuesday. "But I'm not emotional about that. I'm moved by all that football means - by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm for seeing my supporters, my family, the affection people have for me."

Ronaldo, who helped Portugal win the tournament in 2016, is yet to score through four games this year. He had a penalty stopped in extra time against Slovenia before later converting his attempt in penalties as Portugal survived a scare from the 57th-ranked side in the world.

Mbappe, who suffered a broken nose in France's opening game against Austria, has scored once in three games but continues to be troubled by the protective face mask.

"You've got the sweat aspect, and we know sweat can get in his eyes. He's getting used to it, but it can affect his vision," coach Didier Deschamps said. "Everything in front of him is fine, but there's a delay with his peripheral vision."

Watch Portugal vs. France LIVE at 3 p.m. ET/Noon PT Friday on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

With the winners of Germany-Spain and Portugal-France awaiting each other in the semifinals, England has moved into the betting favourite at the tournament, according to FanDuel. England will face Switzerland on Saturday, with Netherlands facing Turkiye later in the day to determine to other semifinal.

Canada faces Venezuela at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on TSN

Playing in the Copa America tournament for the first time, Canada clinched second in Group A with a 1-0 win over Peru and a goalless draw against Chile after falling 2-0 to Argentina in their opener.

Canada had the benefit of playing a man up against both Peru and Chile as both picked up red cards during their matches. Venezuela took advantage of a 10-man Ecuador side to earn a 2-1 win in their opening game before defeating Mexico 1-0 and Jamaica 3-0 to close out the group round with a perfect record.

Venezuela has never won the Copa America and entered the tournament at No. 52 in the FIFA rankings, behind Canada at No. 48.

Watch Canada vs. Venezuela at the 2024 Copa America Friday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

The Canadians will be without Tajon Buchanan for the quarter-final after he suffered a broken tibia in practice on Tuesday. The Inter Milan midfielder started Canada's opening game before entering as a sub against both Peru and Chile.

While the injury provided a shock for the team, defender Alistair Johnston pushed Canada to use the injury as a rallying point ahead of Friday's match.

"He'd be the first one to say 'Look guys, do this for me. Focus on the game, you know we've made it this far and we want to keep going.' So, it's given us an extra set of motivation in a way just to do this for Tajon," Johnston said. "We know that he would have played a massive part in this game coming up and obviously whatever games in the future ideally in this tournament."

Finding offence will be a key focus for Canada after Jonathan David provided the team's lone goal of the group round against Peru. The low-scoring Group A saw a total of just six goals, with five belonging to Argentina. Venezuela is one of three teams tied for second at the tournament with six goals, behind Uruguay who scored nine.

Argentina will face Ecuador in the opening quarter-final at the Copa America on Thursday night (LIVE on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

{allcanada} Lions QB Adams Jr. named CFL's top offensive player for June

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TORONTO — B.C. Lions quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. was named the CFL's offensive player for the month of June on Wednesday.

Adams received a grade of 93.9 in helping B.C. (3-1) enjoy a solid start to the season. Adams completed 90-of-133 passes (67.7 per cent) for a league-high 1,369 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception for a 115.8 efficiency rating.

The CFL weekly and monthly honour rolls highlight players in nine positions based on data points registered and compiled by Pro Football Focus, a sports analytics company.

Teammate Alexander Hollins (27 catches, CFL-best 457 yards, three TDs) also topped league receivers with an 82.4 grade.

Toronto defensive lineman Jared Brinkman earned top defensive honours with a 90.5 grade. In three games, Brinkman has six tackles (one for loss), two sacks and a forced fumble in 115 total defensive snaps and earned a 91.1 grade over 30 run-defence snaps.

Toronto's offensive line took top honours in its class with a 72.7 overall grade. The top-three performers were Isiah Cage (75.7), Dejon Allen (75.4) and Ryan Hunter (65.6), with Cage also earning the top individual score.

The other individual honourees included Toronto running back Ka'Deem Carey (83.0), Saskatchewan linebacker Jameer Thurman (81.1), Montreal defensive back Nafees Lyon (80.7). Ottawa Redblacks returner DeVonte Dedmon (80.8), Calgary kicker Rene Paredes (93.4) and Roughriders special-teams player Rolan Milligan Jr.

{allcanada} Patterson to make first CFL start when Riders host Argonauts

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

It will now be up to Shea Patterson to keep the Saskatchewan Roughriders on their winning path.

Patterson makes his first career CFL start Thursday night when Saskatchewan (3-0) hosts the Toronto Argonauts (2-1). Patterson has at least had time to prepare as the Riders are coming off the bye week.

Harris, 38, went on the six-game injured list with a knee ailment. Last season, Saskatchewan won three of its first four regular-season games before Harris suffered a season-ending tibial plateau fracture in his right leg that required surgery.

The good news this time around is head coach Corey Mace has said Harris suffered a moderate MCL sprain.

Harris was injured in Saskatchewan's 36-20 home win over Hamilton on June 23. Patterson saw action in that game, completing four-of-10 passes for 41 yards while also running for a Riders' TD.

The six-foot-two, 202-pound Patterson is in his third CFL season, second with Saskatchewan. But in 21 career regular-season games, he has completed eight-of-16 passes for 73 yards with no TDs or interceptions.

The 27-year-old American has run 29 times for 61 yards and four TDs.

Patterson played collegiately at Mississippi and Michigan, passing for 8,800 yards, 68 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He began his CFL career with the Montreal Alouettes in 2021 before joining the Riders last season.

Toronto is coming off a 30-20 home loss to the Montreal Alouettes. This is the Argos' first road game this season.

Starter Cameron Dukes was 22-of-32 passing for 199 yards but threw his first interception of the season. Backup Bryan Scott came in late and provided Toronto its only TD of the night, a 40-yard scoring strike to Makai Polk.

But Toronto didn't do itself any favours with 11 penalties for 120 yards.

The contest features an interesting family twist involving Saskatchewan defensive line coach Phillip Daniels and his son, Toronto receiver DaVaris Daniels. The elder Daniels is in his first season as a CFL coach but served as a defensive line coach with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles (2016-19) and earned a Super Bowl ring following a 15-year career as a defensive lineman with Seattle, Chicago and Washington.

DaVaris Daniels is in his eighth CFL season, fourth with Toronto. The league's top rookie in 2018 with Calgary, the junior Daniels is a two-time Grey Cup champion ('18, '22).

Saskatchewan is looking to go 4-0 for the first time since 2013 when it last won the Grey Cup. The Riders currently sit atop the West Division but the B.C. Lions (3-1) are close behind.

The Riders will also be minus American receiver Shawn Bane Jr., who had three TDs in their season-opening 29-21 win over Edmonton. However, running back A.J. Ouellette, a former Argo, had a season-high 98 yards rushing on 20 carries versus Hamilton.

Toronto leads the CFL in rushing (136.3 yards per game) while Saskatchewan (57.7) ranks last. Both defences have been very solid against the run with the Riders tops (32.7 per game) and Toronto second (40 yards).

Each unit is allowing a league-low 2.9 yards per rushing attempt.

Pick: Toronto.

Ottawa Redblacks versus Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Friday night)

At Winnipeg, Zach Collaros (thorax) is expected to start for the Bombers (0-4). He was hurt in last week's 22-19 overtime loss to Calgary and didn't practise Tuesday. The Bombers' losses have been by a combined 24 points but the last three have been by just nine points. One was a 22-19 road loss in Ottawa (2-1) on June 13 to former Bomber quarterback Dru Brown, who threw for 265 yards and a TD in last week's 26-24 home win over Hamilton.

Pick: Winnipeg.

Calgary Stampeders versus Montreal Alouettes (Saturday night)

At Montreal, the Alouettes (4-0) play just their second home game but come off a solid 30-20 road win in Toronto. Cody Fajardo threw for 284 yards and a TD while backup Caleb Evans had a touchdown pass and rushing score. Canadian rookie Geoffrey Cantin-Arkin had two sacks in the Als' solid defensive performance. Linebacker Cam Judge and cornerback Demerio Houston had seven tackles each for Calgary (2-1) last week against Winnipeg, adding a sack and interception, respectively.

Pick: Montreal.

B.C. Lions versus Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Sunday night)

At Hamilton, B.C. (3-1) makes its second trek East after its season-opening 35-27 loss in Toronto but last played June 27 in a 24-21 home win over Edmonton. Vernon Adams Jr. has a CFL-best 1,369 passing yards with seven TDs and one interception while Alexander Hollins has 27 catches for a league-leading 457 yards with three TDs. The Ticats (0-4) led 24-19 late last week in Ottawa but couldn't hold on as Lewis Ward's game-ending 46-yard field goal sealed the Redblacks' win.

Pick: B.C.

Last week: 4-0.

Overall: 9-7.

TORONTO — B.C. Lions quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., Toronto Argonauts defensive back Jonathan Edouard and the Edmonton Elks' offensive line were among the top performers on the CFL's honour roll for Week 4 of the season.

Adams was 27-of-38 passing for 331 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions in the Lions' 24-21 win over Edmonton on Thursday to earn a player grade of 89.5.

Edouard had a defensive tackle, an interception and a knockdown in Toronto's 30-20 loss to Montreal on Friday to earn a 90.2 rating.

The Elks line earned a 66.4 rating. It allowed one sack and allowed Edmonton to put up 98 rushing yards on 15 carries, an average of 6.5 yards per attempt, in the loss to B.C.

The league's weekly honour roll highlights players in nine positions based on data points registered and compiled by PFF, a sports analytics company.
