{allcanada} Ward's late field goal lifts Redblacks past winless Tiger-Cats

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Redblacks' post-game fireworks couldn't have come at a better time considering the team had plenty to celebrate following an exciting 24-22 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday night.

The game came down to the final play when Lewis Ward connected on a 46-yard field goal as time expired to hand the hapless Tiger-Cats (0-4) their fourth straight CFL setback.

Ward, who had missed a convert earlier in the game, admitted his confidence "was pretty low after that first extra kick miss" but increased after connecting on three field goals from 34, 36 and 42 yards out.

Despite coming up with the late-game heroics, the 31-year-old Ward appeared unfazed, but when asked admitted he'd had some time to settle down.

"I've had about 20 minutes now to decompress, but my throat is a little sore from yelling and talking and stuff," said Ward. "But (a walk-off kick) will never get old. That's something that's always exciting, always nerve-racking and hopefully we don't have too many of those."

The victory marked Ottawa's (2-1) first against an East Division opponent at TD Place since a 24-9 win over the Toronto Argonauts on Nov. 2, 2018 and snapped Hamilton's 10-game winning streak over Ottawa.

For Hamilton it will be back to the drawing board after another disappointing finish.

"It's frustrating to lose any game, but that's two now that we've kind of lost that way," said Tiger-Cats head coach Scott Milanovich. "I just told the guys I wish I could yell and scream at them, but they're giving nothing but effort. There's total buy-in, they're working hard every day and we've just got to keep at it."

As far as entertainment this one left fans wanting through the first three quarters but more than made up for it in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter.

Ottawa trailed 16-15 when DeVonte Dedmon, who made an impact all night long, had a 30-yard punt return to put Ottawa on Hamilton's 54-yard line.

A couple big runs by Ryquell Armstead put Ottawa at the 15 and then quarterback Dru Brown, who was 24-for-39 for 265 yards and one TD, was able to find Justin Hardy in the end zone for a TD, but the Redblacks failed on their two-point convert, making it 21-16.

A determined Bo Levi Mitchell — who was 30-for-45 for 322 yards and two touchdowns — drove his Tiger-Cats downfield for a big comeback of his own culminating with a four-yard TD pass to Shemar Bridges to take a 22-21 lead. They failed on their two-point convert.

"To be completely honest, I just didn't think I played a good enough game," said Mitchell. "I know we had the last drive there, but I just feel like this offence is so good and I just missed a couple reads tonight that took us off the field."

With time winding down the Redblacks were able to get into field goal range to set up Ward for the win.

"I had the utmost confidence that (Ward) was going to hit it because I know (Lewis)," said head coach Bob Dyce. "That's the type of guy he (Lewis) is."

Trailing 12-9 to start the second half, Hamilton was able to take a 16-12 lead off 35- and 42-yard Marc Liegghio field goals.

Ward brought Ottawa back within one, 16-15, with a 42-yard field goal with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Ottawa got off to a rough start with Dedmon fumbling the kick return on the opening play putting Hamilton on the Redblacks' 30. Two plays later Mitchell connected with Tim White for a 25-yard TD to take a 7-0 lead.

Dedmon redeemed himself on the next return setting Ottawa up at midfield. Brown then produced a five-play drive to put Ottawa on the one-yard line where Dustin Crum punched in the touchdown. Ward had a rare miss on the convert kicking wide to trail 7-6.

Dyce talked about his team's resiliency and ability to bounce back from early missteps.

"I'm so proud of those guys," Dyce said. "Throughout the whole game there was never a time where anyone was quiet … The belief that they all had in each other, just very proud of these guys to have the resilience, yeah, just very proud."

Ottawa took the lead late in the first quarter on a 34-yard Ward field goal but it was short-lived after Liegghio connected on a 38-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

The Redblacks closed out the opening half with the lead after Ward hit a 36-yard field goal to make it 12-10 Ottawa.

The Vancouver Canucks signed defenceman Jett Woo to a one-year, two-way contract on Sunday.

Woo had 31 points (seven goals, 24 assists) and 93 penalty minutes across 62 games in 2023-24 with Vancouver's American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks.

The 23-year-old's assists and points totals were career highs, while his goal total tied his career-best mark.

In 200 career AHL games split between Abbotsford and the Utica Comets, Woo has 65 points (19 goals, 46 assists) and 242 penalty minutes.

The Winnipeg product has also appeared in eight career Calder Cup playoff games, all with Abbotsford.

The six-foot, 205-pound Woo was a second-round pick (37th overall) of the Canucks in the 2018 NHL draft

The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenceman Jonathan Kovacevic to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick, it was announced Sunday.

{allcanada} Canada draws with Chile, advances to knockout stage at Copa America

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Maxime Crépeau finished with three saves to lead Canada to a scoreless draw with Chile at Inter&Co Stadium on Saturday night, sending the Canadians to the quarterfinal round of Copa America in their first appearance.

Chile was forced to play a man down after Gabriel Suazo was issued a second yellow card in the 27th minute, but Canada (1-1-1) could not take advantage. Suazo also received a yellow card in the 12th minute, leading to the red card.

Gabriel Arias saved two shots for Chile (0-1-2). Arias had both of his saves and Crépeau, the keeper for Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers, had one in the first half.

Canada advanced to the quarterfinals, which begin on Thursday, when Group A leader Argentina beat Peru 2-0. Argentina, the favorites to win the event for a second straight time, won all three of its matches in group play. Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the championship match in 2021, the last time the tournament was held. Argentina and Uruguay have both won the title 15 times.

Chile concluded its Copa America group stage without head coach Ricardo Gareca, who was handed a one-match suspension because he was late in bringing on a player at halftime in a loss to Argentina on Tuesday.

Canada beat Peru for the first time in the second match of group play.

Canada and Chile were playing for the first time in the 21st century.

Canada is trying to become the fourth team to win more than one match in its first Copa America appearance. Uruguay won twice in 1916. Mexico won twice in 1993 and Honduras notched three victories in 2001.

Chile did not score a goal in its three matches. The only other time Chile failed to score in the Copa America was in 1917.

{allcanada} Dube, Hart, McLeod and Foote set to become UFAs if not tendered qualifying offers

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

There has been no change to the NHL rights of four players charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault, Sportsnet can confirm.

As a result, Dillon Dubé of the Calgary Flames, Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers and Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils are set to become UFAs on Sunday if they do not receive a qualifying offer from their respective teams by 5 p.m. ET.

The news was first reported by The Athletic's Chris Johnston.

According to Johnston, "there were discussions between the NHL and NHLPA about potentially changing how the status of those players was treated while the legal process played out, but they ultimately decided against taking that action."

The sexual assault case involving five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team is set to return to court in August to potentially set a date for trial.

A judicial pretrial, which is closed to the public, is planned for July, and some hearings have also been scheduled for September.

The five players — Dubé, Hart, McLeod, Foote and former NHLer Alex Formenton — were charged earlier this year in connection with an alleged sexual assault at a London, Ont., hotel in 2018.

They are all charged with sexual assault, though McLeod also faces an additional charge of sexual assault for "being a party to the offence."

The players have chosen to be tried before a judge and jury.

The Montreal Canadiens have selected forward Michael Hage with the 21st overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Hage scored 31 goals and 75 points with Chicago of the USHL last season.

"He can play centre, he can play right wing," TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button said. "His offensive play is sometimes subtle, but really effective. You cannot sleep on him in a game because if you do, that's when he strikes."

The Canadiens acquired the 21st-overall pick from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for the 26th-overall pick as well as picks in the second round (57th), and seventh round (198th).

Earlier in the night , the Habs selected forward Ivan Demidov with the fifth overall pick.

{allcanada} Oilers trade up, select O'Reilly with 32nd pick in 2024 NHL Draft

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Edmonton Oilers traded into the first round at the NHL Draft on Friday, acquiring the 32nd overall pick and selecting Sam O'Reilly of the London Knights.

Edmonton traded a conditional first-round pick in 2025 or 2026 to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for the final pick of the first round.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun adds the pick in 2025 is top-12 protected. If the pick does not convey to the Flyers next year, the pick in 2026 will be unprotected. If the Oilers trade their 2026 first-round pick, the Flyers will automatically get the pick in 2025.

The 6-foot-1 winger scored 20 goals and 56 points in 68 games in the OHL last season. He was ranked 32nd on Bob McKenzie's final draft rankings.

The Montreal Canadiens selected forward Aatos Koivu, son of former captain Saku Koivu, with the 70th overall selection in the 2024 NHL Draft on Saturday.

Aatos recorded 16 goals and 31 points across 28 games in Finland's U20 SM-Sarja league and will now be a part of Montreal's plans, just as his father was when the Habs selected him 21st overall in 1993.

Saku was a Canadien for 13 seasons, captaining the team for a decade between 1999 and 2009.

Becoming the first European-born captain in the franchise's history, Saku posted 641 points with Montreal before making his way to Anaheim, where he played five seasons before announcing his retirement in 2014.

{allcanada} Whyte hits game-winning field goal to give Lions victory over Elks

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

VANCOUVER — Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. says winning doesn't need to be so hard for the B.C. Lions.

Sean Whyte kicked a 42-yard field goal in the dying seconds as the Lions battled from behind to defeat the Edmonton Elks 24-21 in a back-and-forth CFL game Thursday night.

"We've got to clean it up," said Adams. "We're way better than that." We've got to make those plays early and not make such a tough game. It can be a little bit easier for us."

Edmonton had tied the game 21-21 on a 52-yard Boris Bede field goal with just over a minute left to play.

The Lions took over the ball and their final drive was aided by a face-masking call against the Elks. Whyte calmly kicked the winning points for his 28th consecutive field goal.

Rick Campbell, B.C.'s head coach and co-general manager, said Whyte did the expected.

"The cool thing about Sean Whyte is you just totally expect him to make it and it's not a big deal," said Campbell. "But I know it's a big deal. "He's money in the bank. It's comforting when you're making decisions knowing that the odds are pretty good. Get him anywhere in field-goal range and he's going to knock it through."

Whyte also connected on kicks of 29 and 24 yards. Fullback Davie Mackie made up for an earlier fumble by scoring on a one-yard plunge late in the fourth quarter to give the Lions a 19-18 lead.

The B.C. drive was aided by an Edmonton pass interference call on the Elks' five-yard line. Justin McInnis made a fingertip catch for a two-point convert to make the score 21-18.

"It shows the confidence the coaching staff has in me," said Mackie. "It's nice we got back in that situation and they had the trust to make the call again."

The win improved the Lions' record to 3-1. The Elks, playing just five days after losing in Toronto, dropped to 0-4. It was the third consecutive week Edmonton had lost a game by three points.

"Pretty damn tough," said Chris Jones, Edmonton's head coach and general manager. "It's the first time I think I've ever lost a football game on the last play."

Jones said his team is "in a hard sport" but saw positives despite the loss.

"We have to realize that we're not very far away," he said. "What we're going to do is continue to dig and keep doing the things that we did to get out of wherever we came from."

Adams, who completed 27 of 38 passes for 330 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions, didn't show the effects of the abdominal injury that caused him to miss practice Tuesday. Adams has thrown 103 passes without an interception.

The Lions have also gone three games not allowing a sack after giving up six in a season-opening loss to Toronto.

Adams believes the Lions can play better. "I'm just proud of these guys," he said. "They just keep fighting . . . but I know we can be better, especially as an offence."

Running back William Stanback also scored for B.C. on a five-yard pass, his first touchdown since joining the Lions as a free agent. Second-year receiver Ayden Eberhart had six catches for 78 yards. Edmonton quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 19 of 30 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Slotback Kurleigh Gittens Jr. had a 21-yard touchdown catch for the Elks. Bede also kicked a 39-yard field goal. Punter Jake Julien added singles of 64 and 55 yards.

The Lions looked poised to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, driving to the Edmonton 10-yard line. Mackie tried to gain some extra yards on a third-and-one gamble but fumbled. Former Lion Loucheiz Purifoy recovered the ball. The Elks took over on their own four and the following drive was aided by two B.C. roughing penalties.

Bethel-Thompson led the Elks on a nine-play, 106-yard drive, putting them on the doorstep with a seven-yard rush. Backup quarterback Dakota Prukop scored on a one-yard plunge to give Edmonton an 18-13 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.

Bethel-Thompson's two-point convert attempt was picked off in the end zone by cornerback Garry Peters. The Lions led 13-12 at halftime after a 29-yard Whyte field goal with 10 seconds left. The Lions' drive was aided by an Edmonton penalty.

UP NEXT

Edmonton: The Elks host Ottawa on July 14.

B.C.: The Lions, who play one home game over the next eight weeks, are in Hamilton on July 7.

NOTES: The Elks last defeated the Lions at BC Place on Aug. 19, 2021. …The 36 points Edmonton scored in a 39-36 loss to Toronto last week was the most points by the Elks in a loss since they lost 45-37 to Ottawa on June 25, 2016. … In their last eight games, the Lions have outscored the Elks 289-103.

{allcanada} Hughes of Canucks wins Norris Trophy as top defenseman in NHL

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LAS VEGAS — Quinn Hughes was 12 years old playing for the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League when coach Rich McLeod approached him about shifting from forward to defense.

He said yes. And the rest is history.

In fact, just 12 years later, the Vancouver Canucks captain made some history of his own by winning the James Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman. And as he stepped onto the stage during the 2024 NHL Awards at Fontainebleau Las Vegas, the 24-year-old thought about the incredible journey he's been on to get here.

"We were missing a guy on defense at the time," Hughes recalled. "I went back there and kind of fell in love with it."

He mentioned that his dad, Jim, had grown up as a defenseman, which made his own positional change more desirable. And now, here he was Thursday, having officially beaten out Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche and Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators, immediately hugging Jim, mom Ellen, and brothers Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes, teammates on the New Jersey Devils.

"It's surreal and probably hasn't sunk in yet," he said. "It was a great season for me and for our team. Took a lot of steps forward individually and as a group, so really proud of the year."

He should be.

In his first season as captain of the Canucks, Hughes led all defensemen in points with 92 (17 goals, 75 assists) and primary power-play assists with 17. He had nine games with at least three assists, something only two others at the position have done in a single season: Bobby Orr (four times) and Ray Bourque (1993-94).

Through it all, he admitted how much he's matured on and off the ice since being named the 15th captain in Canucks history on Sept. 11, 2023.

"Honestly I can't talk enough about my growth, even going back further to the past 18 months," Hughes said. "I mean, we'd been losing at the time and it was really hard seeing all these other teams have success when we weren't.

"It forced me and a bunch of the guys on the team to reevaluate what we wanted to do and what kind of team or organization you wanted to be. I think we did a great job of that, for sure. And now we're going to continue to take another step because I feel we can contend the next couple of years."

Hughes gave some of the credit for the team's turnaround to coach Rick Tocchet, who was named winner of the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's top coach on May 22. Since being hired on Jan. 22, 2023, he's led the Canucks to a regular-season record of 70-35-13.

This season alone, Vancouver went 50-23-9, won the Pacific Division and made it to the Western Conference Second Round before losing to the Edmonton Oilers in seven games. The hurt from that defeat, Hughes said, still stings, but he and his teammates have learned from it.

"I'm not going to win the Norris every year. There's too many good defensemen," he said. "But I think if I can be out there and have a year like I had this year, that would show the consistency I think I have.

"Now that we made the playoffs and have that drive, I think there's room for growth for sure. I'd say that's the next step."

Tyler Myers agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday with a $3M average annual value.

The 34-year-old defenseman had 29 points (five goals, 24 assists) in 77 regular-season games for the Canucks last season and one assist in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"Tyler has been a valued member of our organization and we are very happy to have him back with our team," said Vancouver general manager Patrik Allvin. "He brings a unique skillset to the ice and is a key member of our leadership group. Tyler is a big, strong, physical defenseman who fits in nicely on our backend."

Selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round (No. 12) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Myers has 371 points (93 goals, 278 assists) in 995 regular-season games for the Canucks, Winnipeg Jets and Sabres and 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 61 playoff games.

Myers has played the last five seasons with the Canucks, scoring 106 points (19 goals, 87 assists).

"I would love to (stay in Vancouver)," Myers said on May 23. "What we've been able to build here the last year and a half, I think it's really special to be a part of. It's an unbelievable city. Fans were quite amazing in the playoffs. It was something special stepping out for every game and I would love to be back."

Myers won the Calder Trophy as the NHL rookie of the year in 2009-10 with the Sabres when he had 48 points (11 goals, 37 assists) in 82 games.

{allcanada} Lions to have QB Adams Jr. for clash vs. Elks on TSN

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

VANCOUVER — Head coach Rich Campbell was confident Vernon Adams Jr. will start against the Edmonton Eskimos, but the B.C. Lions quarterback was a little more guarded about his health.

Adams practiced Monday, but missed Tuesday's workout with an abdominal injury. At the time his status was listed as questionable for when the Lions (2-1) face the Elks (0-3) Thursday at BC Place Stadium to open Week 4 of the CFL season.

Watch the game LIVE at 10pm ET/7pm PT on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

"He's good," Campbell said after the Lions walk-through Wednesday. "He came in this morning feeling better. He seems good to go.

"He's been playing awesome for us. We're obviously happy that VA is ready to go."

Adams, who is listed as the starter on the Lions depth chart, was more cautious.

"I feel good today," he said. "I woke up feeling better.

"We're going to see how we feel tomorrow."

The 31-year-old, who is in his second season as the Lions starter, said he woke up Tuesday feeling a strain in his lower abdomen. After sitting out Tuesday he took all the reps during Wednesday's short practice and his movements didn't seem to be hindered.

"We'll see when I wake up tomorrow but feeling better today," he said.

After three games this season Adams has completed 63-of-95 passes for a CFL-leading 1,038 yards, six touchdowns and just one interception.

Former Saskatchewan Roughrider Jake Dolegala is Adams' backup.

One player expecting to see some extra attention from the Elks is Lions wide receiver Alexander Hollins.

Hollins scorched the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for 215 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches in a nail-biting 26-24 victory last week.

"Attention? I love attention," said the six-foot, 175-pound speedster from Yazoo City, Miss.

Hollins grabbed everyone's attention when he hauled in a 71-yard touchdown pass from Adams on BC's fourth offensive play of the game against Winnipeg. He later caught a 29-yeard touchdown.

A big play early fires up both the offence and defence, said Hollins.

"It helps a lot," he said. "It makes the defence work even harder to try to get the ball back.

"Everything is just high energy, cheering each other on, working hard. The more big plays everyone is making, the more plans we want to make as a unit."

After being named the CFL's top receiver for Week 3, Hollins was asked if he could rake in even more yards against the winless Elks.

"It's not a goal of mine to try to get a certain amount," he said. "I just try to get open, catch the ball, get first downs, make plays for the team."

Adams said Hollins has the ability to be where he's most needed.

"He's being him, the playmaker he is," said Adams. "When the ball finds him, he's going to make a play."

Hollins leads the league with 402 yards and three touchdowns on 23 catches. Teammate Justin McInnis is third with 17 catches for 340 yards and two touchdowns.

Running back William Stanback, who signed with the Lions this winter after helping the Montreal Alouettes win the Grey Cup last year, is the league's top rusher with 187 yards on 42 carries.

It's a quick turnaround for the Elks, who are coming off a heart-breaking 39-36 loss against the Argonauts in Toronto Saturday. It was the second time in two weeks Edmonton lost by three points.

"It's not like we've played poor football," said Chris Jones, Edmonton's head coach and general manager. "We've unfortunately lost three games and it comes down to that one or two plays that we've got to learn to make.

"When we do, we're going to have a lot of success."

Campbell said the Elks are a better than then their record.

"They are a good team," he said. "They have good players. We're not getting caught up in their record. We expect it will be a close game again."

The Lions will also be without Canadian linebacker Ben Hladik, who has a thumb injury. Hladik, who leads the CFL with 25 tackles, will be replaced by Bo Lokombo.

EDMONTON ESKIMOS (0-3) at BC Lions (2-1)

Thursday, B.C. Place

LUCKY 13: Hollins was the first Lion since Nick Moore in 2017 to have over 200 receiving yards in a game. Tyon Gray holds the franchise record for most receiving yards in a game with 270 set in 1981. Hollins' 215 yards is the 13th highest in Lions history.

ON THE ROAD: After Thursday, the Lions will play one home game over the next eight weeks. They play in Hamilton July 7, return home for a July 13 game against Saskatchewan, then travel to Calgary July 21, Winnipeg Aug. 1 and Edmonton Aug. 11 before hosting the Bombers Aug. 18.

GOING DEEP: Heading into Week 4 Adams leads the CFL in completing 14 of 29 passes for 20 or more yards, for a league-high 499 yards and five touchdowns.

{allcanada} Oilers coach: stars McDavid, Draisaitl played through injuries in playoffs

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said on Wednesday that some of the team's top stars were playing through injuries during their Stanley Cup playoff run.

The Oilers lost 2-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final to the Florida Panthers on Monday night.

"It's obviously disappointing, it's frustrating," Leon Draisaitl said. "There's only one team that can win, unfortunately. But I'm very proud of what we've been through this year."

Knoblauch said Draisaitl had injuries that left the staff questioning whether he could play, while forward Evander Kane had a sports hernia and captain Connor McDavid was also playing hurt.

"Leon battled things throughout the playoffs — ribs, hands throughout the playoffs," Knoblauch said. "At certain times it was worse than others. There were games we weren't sure he was going to play. But he fought through it and played very well in those games.

"And then Evander with the sports hernia, something that's been bothering him throughout the season. And it got to the point where it just limited his game. And unfortunately, we missed him."

Knoblauch declined to comment on McDavid's undisclosed injury, saying he didn't have much information on the ailment.

McDavid led the playoffs with eight goals and 34 assists and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs.

"There were lots of happy moments throughout these playoffs, for sure," he said. "A lot of great moments that I'll remember for the rest of my life."

The postseason's top four scorers were all Oilers — including Draisaitl, Zach Hyman and defenseman Evan Bouchard.

"You often get defined on winning and winning that last game," Knoblauch said. "We were so close to winning it. I think there were so many positives throughout the season that we should be happy about."

The game capped a roller-coaster season that had Edmonton start with a 3-9-1 record, fire head coach Jay Woodcroft and install Knoblauch in his place.

Under the new bench boss, the Oilers went on a 16-game win streak and finished second in the Pacific Division with a 49-27-6 record.

"It was going to turn around no matter what. We had too good of players in that room to not score more goals and win more games," forward Mattias Janmark said. "But I think, also, to become the team that we thought we were and that we needed to be, we needed to start doing things a little bit better, too."

Several players hit major milestones, including McDavid, who had 100 assists, and Hyman, who scored 54 goals.

There are 10 unrestricted free agents on Edmonton's roster, while the Oilers also have decisions to make on a pair of restricted free agents.

The club will also be able to sign extensions with some high-profile players starting Monday, including Draisaitl. But the German star said he hasn't thought extensively about his future.

"I'm obviously going to sit down with my agent here, talk to the Oilers, see what their plan is, see what my plan is and go from there," he said.

"I love being an Oiler more than anything."

For now, Draisaitl and his teammates are simply taking time to process the highs and lows of their season.

The Oilers may not have won the Stanley Cup, but the team now believes they can get there, McDavid said.

"We've sat up here before and told you how bad we want to win and, looking back, we were miles away from it. And now we're one shot away from it," the captain said. "The belief has never been higher, not only within (Draisaitl and I), but within that room, within everybody."

{allcanada} Draisaitl on looming contract situation: 'I love being an Oiler more than anything'

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

As the Edmonton Oilers sort through the disappointment of losing in the Stanley Cup Final to the Florida Panthers, the status of Leon Draisaitl's future with the team is one of the top questions heading into the off-season.

Draisaitl has one season remaining on his eight-year, $68 million contract before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer. He is eligible to sign an extension starting on July 1.

"I'm going to give you the most boring answer here," said Draisaitl of his contract status during the Oilers' end of season press conference Wednesday. "I'm obviously going to sit down with my agents here and talk to the Oilers and see what their plan is, see what our plan is, and go from there."

The 25-year-old had 41 goals and 106 points in 81 regular season games and added 10 goals and 31 points in the playoffs. However, in the Stanley Cup Final, he had just three assists.

Since being drafted third overall by Edmonton in 2014, Draisaitl has won the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award along with five NHL All-Star nods.

The German has 347 goals and 850 points in 719 career NHL games.

The Oilers have 10 unrestricted free agents this summer, including Warren Foegele and Adam Henrique, and two restricted free agents in Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg

"It's something going to take a little bit of time [to think about] what I want, what the Oilers want and what everyone wants and go from there," said Draisaitl. "Edmonton has the only chance to sign me, so I guess they are first. I'll leave it at that. Obviously I love being an Oiler more than anything."

{allcanada} Crude awakening: Edmonton Oilers fans coping with Stanley Cup loss

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The hearts of Edmonton Oilers fans shattered Monday night as the team lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final.

On Tuesday, many were still trying to put the pieces back together.

"I wore all black to work. I'm in mourning," said Jamie Cessford, an Oilers fan who lives in Vancouver. "I'm definitely still reeling a bit."

Cessford was clad in an orange Jordan Eberle jersey Monday night as he sat in a bar in downtown Seattle watching the Florida Panthers edge the Oilers 2-1 to capture the championship.

He and his friend were silent for much of the third period as Edmonton pressed, trying in vain to tie the game. After the final horn sounded, they walked to a concert nearby and Cessford thought back to the last time he'd cheered Edmonton on in a Stanley Cup final.

That was 2006, when the Oilers lost to the Carolina Hurricanes.

"I was just like, 'Man, this doesn't get any easier as you age,'" Cessford said. "The sports pain is still real as you reach your mid-to-late 30s."

Samantha Woj turned to canvas to process her feelings on Tuesday.

"I'm actually so sad today and I'm like 'I just need to do a painting,'" Woj, an artist who uses sports equipment to paint, said in a phone interview, a football in her hand. "Art is pretty much my way to channel my emotions."

A video of Woj using a hockey stick to paint a portrait of Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner drew praise during the playoffs.

Edmonton's post-season success is bittersweet, she said, because though it ended in disappointment, cheering brought people together.

"You can't be too mad, be too upset," Woj said. "It hurts, but you can't be too upset because everyone's being so welcoming and so nice."

For Oilers fan Craig Baird, the disappointment was accompanied by a serious sugar crash.

Before each game Edmonton played during the playoffs, Baird bought Oilers-themed doughnuts to enjoy while watching, sharing photos of the treats on social media. He had seven for Monday's Game 7 — plus one Edmonton Elks-themed doughnut for some extra good luck.

"It has no real bearing on the game whatsoever, but you feel like you're part of it in a way," he said.

Baird watched the game at home, filled with nerves and anticipation.

"It was a lot of walking around," he said. "I wasn't really able to sit there and watch the game, especially in the third period when we were down one goal. And obviously the massive amount of sugar probably played a role."

The result wasn't what Baird and other Oilers fans wanted to see, but he's keeping the playoff run in perspective.

"Obviously there's disappointment, because we want the Oilers to win the Cup, we want to bring the Cup back to Canada. But in the end, I'm proud of the team," he said.

That's the right approach to take, said Ben Schellenberg, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Manitoba.

"One of the things to remember is that (the disappointment) will go away," said Schellenberg, who studies the psychology of sports fandom. "The beauty of sport is there's always a new season around the corner. And I guess the Edmonton Oilers have a pretty good team, so there's always next year."

For many fans, cheering for a team becomes part of their identity. There are social benefits to fandom, Schellenberg said, such as connecting with like-minded people and feeling a sense of belonging.

For some, though, being a fan can have negative impacts when they can't let the outcome of a game go.

There's some evidence that shows fans with "high levels of obsessive passion" aren't fulfilled in other parts of their life, Schellenberg said.

"That's sort of a dangerous recipe, because then you're gonna kind of latch on to being an Oilers fan. And that's going to kind of consume you," he said.

"Basically, the recommendation is to kind of have a balanced life, to make sure you're being fulfilled in multiple areas of your life."

Robert Vallerand, a psychology professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal, said sports fandom is much like any other passion — with one important distinction.

People's identities get tied up with their team. When a super-fan's team loses, it's like they've lost, too.

And because the Oilers were part of a de facto competition between Canada and the United States, he said, it may have made things all the tougher for fans.

"People may have lost twice," Vallerand said. "Both as an Oilers fan and as a Canadian."

{allcanada} David's strike leads Canada past 10-man Peru for first-ever win at Copa America

--

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Jonathan David scored in the 74th minute, and Canada beat Peru 1-0 on Tuesday night in the Copa America for its first victory over a South American opponent in 24 years.

Peru played a man short after Miguel Araujo was given a red card in the 59th minute for a studs-up tackle on Jacob Shaffelburg, a call made after a video review.

Canada got its first win in four matches under Jesse Marsch, the American hired as coach last month, and beat a South American team for the first time since a 2-0 victory over Colombia in the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup final.

David's goal, his 27th for Canada, ended the national team's 391-minute scoreless streak. Twenty-six of his goals have come in competitive matches.

The game was paused in first-half stoppage time when an assistant referee running on the non-shaded part of the stadium collapsed and needed medical attention. He got to his feet briefly and was taken off the field in a stretcher. He had been running down the line on the non-shaded part of the stadium.

Canada (1-1), in its first Copa America, rebounded from an opening 2-0 loss to defending champion Argentina, and Peru began with a 0-0 draw against Chile. The Canadians close Group A on Saturday against Chile at Orlando, Florida, the same day Peru (0-1-1) faces Argentina at Miami Gardens, Florida. The top two teams advance to the quarterfinals.

Peru reached the semifinals in 2021 before losing to Brazil. It had failed to score in nine of its last 12 matches.

David scored after Cyle Larin made a long outlet pass to Shaffelburg, who crossed. David took two touches and beat goalkeeper Pedro Gallese from near the penalty spot, sending the ball in off the far post. David is two behind Larin, Canada's career scoring leader.

Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau made a diving save in second-half stoppage time, then punched away a free kick.

{allcanada} Blue Bombers WR Schoen appears headed for six-game injured list

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Winnipeg Blue Bombers wide receiver Dalton Schoen appears headed for the six-game injured list, TSN's Farhan Lalji reports.

The injury is latest blow for the winless Blue Bombers, who have struggled to get their offence clicking this season.

Schoen, 27, had five catches for 54 yards in last week's 26-24 loss to the B.C. Lions. He has 14 catches for 159 yards this season.

The three-year CFL veteran had 71 catches for 1,222 yards and 10 touchdowns last season after a breakout 2022 campaign in which he caught 70 passes for 1,441 and 16 touchdowns.

The Blue Bombers visit the Calgary Stampeders this weekend as the team continues to search for their first win of 2024.

{allcanada} 3 Keys: Oilers at Panthers, Game 7 of Stanley Cup Final

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

(2P) Oilers at (1A) Panthers

Stanley Cup Final, Game 7

8 p.m. ET; ABC, ESPN+, SN, TVAS, CBC

Best-of-7 series tied 3-3

SUNRISE, Fla. -- History will be made in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final at Amarant Bank Arena on Monday. The question is whether the Florida Panthers or Edmonton Oilers will be the ones making it.

If the Panthers win, it will be the first Cup championship in their history.

If the Oilers win, it will be their first Cup championship since 1990. They could also become the first team to climb out of a 3-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup since the Toronto Maple Leafs did it against the Detroit Red Wings in 1942.

Edmonton would also become the first team from Canada to claim the Cup since the Montreal Canadiens won it in 1993.

The Oilers defeated the Panthers 5-1 in Game 6 at Rogers Place on Saturday, their third consecutive win after three defeats to force Game 7. Edmonton has outscored Florida 18-5 in the past three games.

"You have to prepare just like you always do," Oilers captain Connor McDavid said. "Obviously it's not your ordinary game. Everybody understands that. But you've got to make it as ordinary as possible in your head. I think part of that is just sticking to your routine. Our room has done a great job of being at our best in these big moments, and I would expect no different (in Game 7)."

The Panthers have struggled to get much going in any department the past three games. Forward Evan Rodrigues said Florida had "probably one of the hardest-working practices I've seen out of our group" on Sunday to prepare for Game 7.

"Game 7, at home. How could you not be so jacked up?" forward Matthew Tkachuk said. "This is an absolutely incredible, incredible opportunity. So, yes, you want to recognize or remember some of the good things that helped you beat these guys earlier in the series, but I'm trying to forget all of it too. Just go in there and win one game. This is what it comes down to."

Panthers coach Paul Maurice is 4-0 in his career (with the Carolina Hurricanes, Winnipeg Jets and Panthers) in Game 7s. Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch is 1-0 in his only career Stanley Cup Playoff Game 7, a 3-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference Second Round.

Here are 3 keys for Game 7:

1. Spark up the power play

This one is for the Panthers, who are 1-for-19 and have allowed two short-handed goals with the man-advantage in the Cup Final. They made a change at practice Sunday, moving forward Vladimir Tarasenko to the first power-play unit in place of Carter Verhaeghe, who took Tarasenko's spot on the second unit. Now to see if it can generate some much-needed offense.

"We've talked a lot about it," Florida captain Aleksander Barkov said. "Of course, their penalty kill dialed in. They're playing really well. They played really good against Dallas and now they're doing the same thing to us.

Obviously, we have to recognize that, and we've been talking about it and working on it. So ... like I said, just like everything else in our game, we just need to come out and play our best so whether it's 5-on-5 or power play or penalty kill."

2. Staying the course

Pretty much everything has been working well for the Oilers the past three games, from the power play to the penalty kill to defense to offense. This is not the time to experiment, Knoblauch said.

"We're not going to do anything differently," he said. "We've always had little adjustments for whoever we're playing, lineup tweaks, maybe emphasis on some things in our system. We didn't do anything drastic. We're playing a very big game and it'll be very much the same as we've done throughout the playoffs."

3. Speed it up

After the Panthers lost Game 6, coach Paul Maurice said they were "lacking speed." Florida didn't get a shot from a forward in that game until midway through the second period, and it was a big part of what hurt them.

If they want to hoist the Cup, they need to get that speed going immediately.

"You utilize time and space," forward Sam Reinhart said. "Sometimes you think you have less than you actually do, so I think it's guys driving the play a little bit more and hang onto pucks a little bit more."

Oilers projected lineup

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins -- Connor McDavid -- Zach Hyman
