(2P) Oilers at (1C) Stars

Western Conference Final, Game 5

8:30 p.m. ET; MAX, truTV, TNT, SN, TVAS

Best-of-7 series tied 2-2

DALLAS -- It comes down to a best-of-3 in the Western Conference Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars, beginning with Game 5 at American Airlines Center on Friday.

The Oilers return to Dallas following their 5-2 win in Game 4, when they came back with five unanswered goals after falling behind 2-0 early in the first period. Their won't-say-die mentality is something they'd like to bring into Game 5.

"Obviously the first eight minutes (of Game 4) weren't good," Edmonton forward Zach Hyman said, "but the consistency throughout the final 52 (minutes) or so, whatever it was, was what we want to take away.

"Being able to sustain that pressure throughout the whole game, being down by two, tying it and then going up by two and being able to hold onto the lead in the third. Just being able to maintain our pace and play throughout the whole game."

For the Stars, they've got home-ice advantage the rest of the way and are hopeful one of their big pieces is available. Defenseman Chris Tanev, who left Game 4 midway through the second period after blocking a shot off his right foot, is a game-time decision, and Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said he was optimistic Tanev would play.

As far as the Stars' overall game, it has to be better.

"I liked our start," DeBoer said. "I thought obviously they were better for longer periods of time. A lot of time in the NHL you get what you deserve. Not many nights you win, and you don't deserve to win, or the teams are even. The better team won (Wednesday). The games we've won, we've been the better team. We have to up our game here in Game 5."

Here are 3 keys for Game 5:

1. Handle the swings

After coming back from a 2-0 deficit in Game 3, Dallas was on the other side of that in Game 4. The Stars couldn't carry the dominance of their first few minutes throughout the whole game. Though it's tough to string together a full 60 minutes, they want to deal with momentum swings better than they did in Game 4.

"No lead is safe, that's for sure," Dallas captain Jamie Benn said. "But it's just trying to do the right things every time you go out here on the ice. Big shifts after you score a goal or big shifts after they score a goal and trying to get that momentum back."

2. Learn from last Game 5

The Oilers enter this game exactly as they did during the Western second round, tied 2-2 against the Vancouver Canucks. They lost 3-2 in that Game 5, when Canucks center J.T. Miller scored with 33 seconds remaining in the third period. Edmonton came back to win the next two games to eliminate Vancouver, but wants to apply that experience again here.

"We played a decent game," Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm said, "but that's the name of the game right now: You can't play decent, you can't play good, you have to play great, and you have to do it for a longer period of time than the opposing team is doing.

"I thought we came out of Game 6, Game 7 of that series and showed we had learned some of those lessons and I think sometimes you hit a road bump, you're going to test your team. You see what you're made of and I thought that series, that helped us a lot knowing we had to win two straight to move on. Now we're here again."

3. Keep on killin'

The penalty kill for each team has dominated the spotlight, especially for Edmonton, which leads all playoff teams in that department at 93.2 percent (the Florida Panthers are next at 88 percent). The Oilers also got the first special-teams goal of this series in Game 4, which proved to be the winning goal when forward Mattias Janmark scored short-handed to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead at 14:31 of the second period.

Each team will look to keep the other's power play off the score sheet. So far, the Oilers are 0-for-6 in the series on the man-advantage and the Stars are 0-for-9.

"I think both PKs have been great," Dallas defenseman Alexander Petrovic said. "Just getting pressure, knowing what to expect and guys are very focused when it's their turn to go out there. (They're) reading off what the good players are doing and I think everyone's just doing their job really well, the 'D' and the forwards. Both teams are doing a good job on the PK."

Oilers projected lineup

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins -- Connor McDavid -- Zach Hyman

Ryan McLeod -- Leon Draisaitl -- Corey Perry

Evander Kane -- Adam Henrique -- Dylan Holloway

Mattias Janmark -- Sam Carrick -- Connor Brown

Mattias Ekholm -- Evan Bouchard

Darnell Nurse -- Brett Kulak

Scratched: Lian Bichsel, Mavrik Bourque, Nils Lundkvist, Derrick Pouliot, Craig Smith

Status report

The Oilers are expected to dress the same lineup they used in a 5-2 win in Game 4 on Wednesday. ... The Stars held an optional morning skate Friday. … If Tanev cannot play, Bichsel, a defenseman, could make his NHL debut.

{allcanada} Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov and Fernandez move into third round at French Open

Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov and Leylah Fernandez have advanced to the third round of the French Open.

Montreal's Auger-Aliassime, the men's No. 21 seed, defeated German qualifier Henri Squire 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in second-round action Thursday at the clay-court tennis Grand Slam.

Auger-Aliassime fired 12 aces in the match, including one to set up match point.

He took a commanding 4-1 lead in the fourth set with a break. After Squire broke in the following game, Auger-Aliassime restored his lead with his seventh break of the match then served out for the victory.

Auger-Aliassime will next face the winner of a match between Japan's Kei Nishikori and 15th seed Ben Shelton of the United States.

Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., rallied past No. 25 seed Frances Tiafoe of the United States 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Shapovalov used an overpowering serve — he had 21 aces to Tiafoe's one — and picked up a key break to go up 5-4 in the fourth set.

The Canadian will next face eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland. Hurkacz is 4-1 in his career against Shapovalov, with all five matches contested on hard court.

Both Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov had to wait out delays as rain in Paris continued to affect play on the outdoor courts at Roland-Garros.

Fernandez, seeded 31st in the women's draw, downed China's Xiyu Wang 6-3, 6-4.

The match was completed after being suspended Wednesday due to rain with Fernandez up 5-3.

Fernandez defended five of the six break points she faced while breaking Wang three times on five chances. The Canadian scored the only break of the second set to go up 4-3, then overcame double break point and break point to take the match.

Fernandez will next face eighth seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. Jabeur has won all three of her previous matches against Fernandez, most recently at this year's Madrid Open.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., was scheduled to face No. 23 seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia later Thursday.

{allcanada} TFC, Union play to scoreless draw

--

CHESTER, Pa. — Toronto FC celebrated a baby and Sean Johnson's 100th regular-season clean sheet in a scoreless draw with the Philadelphia Union in MLS play Wednesday.

Toronto also surpassed its entire points total for last season.

Toronto (7-7-2) has 23 points, with 54 still on the table during the regular season. TFC finished with 22 points last year when it finished bottom of the league at 4-20-10.

Toronto was without Italian star Lorenzo Insigne, who was back in Italy for the birth of Mattia, his third son. Coach John Herdman said the absence was planned.

"It's another Insigne hopefully that wants to play for Toronto in the near future," Herdman joked.

Herdman said there was no definitive word yet on whether Insigne will be back for Saturday's game at D.C. United. But given the team has a two-week break after that, it would not be surprising to see him get some more time in Naples.

"Sometimes family has to come before football," said Herdman.

It was a poised, professional performance on the road for Toronto, which had been challenged by Herdman to batten down the defensive hatches.

After conceding 14 goals in its first 11 league games, TFC had leaked 10 in its previous four outings (1-0-3). That dropped the Toronto defence to 21st in the league, conceding an average 1.60 goals a game.

"We wanted to put defending as a priority, but at the same time bring our attacking identity and continue to be brave," said Herdman. "And I thought tonight we just got the balance right."

"That's our sixth clean sheet of the season and a good point on the road. And disappointed not to take three (points)," he added.

Italian Federico Bernardeschi, returning from a one-game ban for yellow card accumulation, had Toronto's best chances of the night. But scoring chances for both sides were not that plentiful.

Bernardeschi missed a glorious chance in the 42nd minute, firing a shot off the crossbar from close range after a deft setup by Derrick Etienne Jr. and Jonathan Osorio following an errant Philadelphia clearance. The Italian sank to his knees in disbelief after the miss.

Bernardeschi came close again in the 49th minute in the rain, poking the ball just wide of the far post after another Union giveaway.

Toronto outshot Philadelphia 11-10 (3-1 in shots on target). And Johnson was up to the challenge on the Union's one dangerous chance, making a fine reflex save to block Alejandro Bedoya's header in the 51st minute.

Johnson is just the fourth goalkeeper in MLS history to record at least 100 regular-season clean sheets. The 16-year veteran, who also has three playoff shutouts, was making his 401st MLS appearance, including regular season (386) and playoff (15) matches.

"He's starting to become, I think, a bit of an MLS legend," said Herdman.

It was a third straight shutout for Philadelphia (4-4-7) but also more dropped points at Subaru Park.

"Overall not dangerous enough on the night, not scary enough," said Philadelphia coach Jim Curtin. "Obviously it's a positive to keep a clean sheet. We've been leaking a lot of goals at home. But at the same time we have to find a balance of being a little bit more brave."

"A tie feels like a loss when we're at home," he added.

Philadelphia has done better on the road (3-0-5) this season than at home (1-4-2) where it had lost a club-record four straight prior to Toronto's arrival. The Union lost just one league game at Subaru Park the past two seasons (22-1-6).

Toronto went into mid-week play in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, two places and four points ahead of Philadelphia.

Despite recent bumps in the road, TFC had won seven of its previous 10 matches in all competitions (7-3-0).

Philadelphia had just one win in its last seven outings (1-4-2) after going unbeaten in the first seven league games (3-0-4) of the season.

Herdman made five chances to his starting lineup with Bernardeschi, Etienne, Deandre Kerr, Kevin Long and Alonso Coello slotting in.

Philadelphia was without two of its stars in goalkeeper Andre Blake and forward Julian Carranza, one of the team's designated players.

Blake, the three-time MLS goalkeeper of the year who has not played since April 30, is recovering from meniscus surgery. Carranza has an ankle injury.

Philadelphia hosts CF Montreal on Saturday.

{allcanada} Lassiter, Ibrahim help Montreal end skid with win over D.C.

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MONTREAL — CF Montreal's winless skid may be over, but head coach Laurent Courtois wants his squad to remember what it felt like.

Ariel Lassiter had a goal and two assists and Sunusi Ibrahim scored twice as Montreal won its first game since April 13 with a 4-2 victory over D.C. United in Major League Soccer play Wednesday night.

The victory ended a nine-game winless run in all competitions. The skid included a 5-1 loss to archrival Toronto FC in MLS and being knocked out of the Canadian Championship by lower-tier Forge FC.

With those results in mind, Courtois told his players to suppress their celebrations post-game.

"I still feel like (crap) about what happened against Toronto and Forge," Courtois said. "That was my message.

"The Toronto and Forge experience was really hurtful for a lot of people and I made sure that the guys don't forget."

Lassiter echoed his coach's words but didn't downplay the effect winning has on the team's morale.

"Winning changes everything, winning changes the outlook of a locker room and the mentality," he said. "It's the victory, the three points that we need to go into Philadelphia (on Saturday) to get points there and then to finish before the international break on a high."

Lassiter opened the scoring in the sixth minute to get the home side on the front foot before an announced crowd of 19,619 at Saputo Stadium. Mathieu Choiniere also scored for Montreal (4-7-4).

Belgium international Christian Benteke scored both goals for D.C. (4-6-6) in its fourth straight game without a victory.

The six-foot-three Benteke entered the match tied for second in league scoring. The 33-year-old has scored 13 of United's 23 goals this season.

"He's a beast," Montreal captain Samuel Piette said. "Even though he's big and tall, you know the quality that he has with his feet is real too. For me he's the perfect striker. And someone obviously that I would love in my team."

D.C. defeated Montreal 1-0 in Washington on March 30 courtesy of a late winner from Pedro Santos.

On Wednesday, the score was 3-2 for Montreal after a thrilling first half that saw D.C. go down to 10 men as defender Matti Peltola picked up two yellow cards.

Montreal's Jules-Anthony Vilsaint picked off a costly giveaway from Peltola to go on a partial break. He then laid the ball across the box to Lassiter, who beat goalkeeper Alex Bono between the legs for his third of the season to kick things off.

After his hot start, Vilsaint exited in the 19th minute when he appeared to injure his leg while running on the counterattack and walked off the pitch in distress.

"Not great for Jules, we haven't been able to get a consistent run in and he was in good form again," Courtois said. "It's tough for him, it's tough for us."

Benteke evened the score in the 29th minute while Montreal's Gabriele Corbo was on the ground injured in the middle of the box.

Benteke, who had pushed Piette into Corbo, took full advantage by tipping a volley over Jonathan Sirois.

Montreal responded with back-to-back goals. Ibrahim, who came on for Vilsaint, connected on a curling cross from Ruan in the 34th minute.

Choiniere followed it up in the 38th by blasting a shot into the bottom corner after Lassiter teed him up on a set piece at the edge of the box.

Benteke brought one back when he hammered a half-volley over Sirois in the 40th minute.

He became the second player in United history with four multi-goal games in his first 15 games of a campaign. Jaime Moreno, in 1997, was the other.

Peltola put D.C. down a man three minutes into first-half injury time when he appeared to elbow Ruan on the break to receive a red card.

"The red card helped, especially that we're always in the lead," Lassiter said. "We knew that D.C. was going to be a very physical team, very direct team.

"The red card helped us out a bit and we have to take advantage in moments like that."

Montreal controlled most of the play in the second half and finally doubled its lead in the 73rd minute with Ibrahim's second of the night.

Lassiter juked out D.C.'s Lucas Bartlett before slotting a pass through United's box to find Ibrahim at the back door.

D.C. failed to test Sirois with a quality chance as Montreal had the edge in possession through the rest of the match.

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts have signed returner Janarion Grant, who won two Grey Cup titles with Winnipeg.

He was named a CFL all-star in 2022 when he led the league with 817 punt return yards, taking two punts back for touchdowns.

He also had 782 yards and a touchdown on kick returns that season.

Grant returned a punt 102 yards for a touchdown in the 2022 Grey Cup, which the Blue Bombers lost 24-23 to Toronto.

The five-foot-10, 173-pound returner played just eight games in 2023 due to injury but still managed 472 punt return yards, including a 92-yard touchdown , and 427 kick return yards.

The Argonauts also added American offensive lineman Dare Rosenthal and released American receiver Xavier Malone and American defensive back Kary Vincent Jr.

Canadian offensive lineman Edouard Paradis was moved to the retired list.

Lions sign defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor

KAMLOOPS, B.C. -- The B.C. Lions have signed American defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor.

The six-foot-one, 295-pound lineman from Miami spent most of 2022 on the Detroit Lions' practice roster after signing as a non-drafted free agent that April.

He was waived by the team in May 2023.

Collegiately, Taylor played 65 games at Appalachian State from 2017-21 and recorded 137 total tackles (67 solo, 70 assisted), 46 tackles for a loss, 26.5 sacks, 10 knockdowns, a pair of fumble recoveries and one interception.
