The Vancouver Canucks announced Wednesday that former goaltender Roberto Luongo will be inducted into the club's Ring of Honour next season.

Luongo was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 14, after an NHL career where he appeared in 1,044 games with a career save percentage of .919 and 2.52 goals-against average with a 489-392-33-91 record.

Originally drafted fourth overall by the New York Islanders at the 1997 NHL Draft, Luongo had two stints with the Florida Panthers (2000-06, 2014-19) and spent eight years in Vancouver, where he is the franchise leader in wins (252), shutouts (38), save percentage (.919) and GAA (2.36) and is second in regular-season games (448)

A six-time NHL All-Star, the Montreal, Que., product took home the William M. Jennings trophy in 2011 alongside then-Canucks teammate Cory Schneider.

Internationally, he backstopped Canada to gold at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and won a second gold at the Sochi Games in 2014. He is a two-time gold medallist at the World Championships (2003, 2004) and won the World Cup of Hockey in 2004.

Luongo is set to become the eighth player to be inducted into the Ring of Honour and only the second goaltender, joining Kirk McLean. The Canucks Ring of Honour currently includes McLean, Orland Kurtenbach, Thomas Gradin, Harold Snepsts, Pat Quinn, Mattias Ohlund, and Alex Burrows.

"We are proud to welcome Roberto to the prestigious list of Canucks Ring of Honour inductees," said Canucks president Jim Rutherford. "Roberto experienced many of his career highlights as a Vancouver Canuck and is deservingly viewed as one of the best goaltenders our game has ever seen thanks to those moments. He was a fierce competitor and a tremendous leader for this team, and we are honoured to be able to acknowledge his contributions to this organization and city."

"Roberto is one of the greatest Canucks of all time and we are thrilled to be able to officially congratulate him and celebrate all his accomplishments with this franchise," said Francesco Aquilini, chairman of Canucks Sports & Entertainment. "For eight years, he amazed and entertained us, brought us to our feet, and made us believe. He was a true professional who led by example, both on and off the ice, and we look forward to permanently recognizing him in the Ring of Honour alongside other Vancouver Canucks legends."

{allcanada} Blue Bombers, head coach O’Shea agree to three-year extension

--

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and head coach Mike O'Shea have agreed to a three-year contract extension, TSN Football Insider Farhan Lalji reported on Tuesday night.

O'Shea said last week he was not in a rush to get a deal worked out after leading the Blue Bombers to a third straight Grey Cup appearance.

O'Shea also said he was focused on concluding exit interviews with the team's players following their loss to the Toronto Argonauts in the final on Nov. 20 in Regina.

Blue Bombers general manager Kyle Walters said prior to the Grey Cup he expected O'Shea to remain with the team.

"This is what Mike does," Walters said. "We sign him to a term, he works the term of that contract and then we sign him to a new one.

"I fully expect that will be the case again this year. I don't really worry about it because it's nothing new."

The native of North Bay, Ont., was named CFL Coach of the Year after guiding Winnipeg to a league-best 15-3 record this season and a second straight first-place finish in the West Division. The Blue Bombers won the Grey Cup under O'Shea in 2019 and 2021.

{allcanada} Redblacks narrow down head coach search

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Ottawa Redblacks have narrowed their list of candidates for their vacant head coaching position to three, per TSN's Farhan Lalji.

Mark Washington, Corey Mace and Bob Dyce are the three candidates named by Lalji in a tweet posted on Tuesday night.

Washington, 49, is the defensive coordinator for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and has held that position since the 2019 season. He has also served as defensive coordinator for the BC Lions from 2014-18.

He also spent 11 seasons in the CFL as a player; he was a defensive back for the Montreal Alouettes (1997-2002) and the Lions (2003-07). He won two Grey Cups as a player, in 2002 and 2006.

Mace, 36, is the defensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts, a position he took over before the 2022 season. The Argos generated the most turnovers in the CFL this season, and they held the league's top offence (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) to just 23 points in a Grey Cup victory on November 20.

Dyce took over as the interim head coach of the Redblacks after Paul LaPolice was fired, and led the team to a 1-3 record in his four games at the helm. He was also the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2015, and went 3-6 in his nine games at the helm in the back half of the season.

The candidates are expected to arrive in Ottawa later this week for in-person interviews, and Lalji reports a decision is expected by Monday, Dec. 5.

{allcanada} Kahkonen stops 28 shots, Sharks blank Canadiens 4-0

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MONTREAL (AP) Kaapo Kahkonen stopped 28 shots for his first shutout for San Jose and the Sharks beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 on Tuesday night.

''It's great, but it also tells how we've played as a team,'' Kahkonen said. ''Huge blocks, huge (penalty) kills, good sticks on the PK and boxing out guys so I could see pucks, so huge thanks to the guys in front of me.''

Tomas Hertl scored twice in the third period, including an empty-netter. Matt Nieto and Logan Couture also scored as the Sharks opened a four-game set against Eastern Conference teams by snapping a three-game losing streak.

Kahkonen re-signed with the Sharks in the summer after playing 36 games last season for Minnesota and San Jose. After a convincing 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 21, he had allowed four or more goals in four of his last five games. Filling in for injured starter James Reimer, Kahkonen recorded his first shutout since March 16, 2021.

''I think he's really confident because he's building off the game in Ottawa,'' Sharks coach David Quinn said. ''He played OK in Seattle, but to come back and play the way he did today, I think it's just another step in the right direction for him. And it was a big step tonight.''

''Honestly, I feel so happy for him,'' added Sharks forward Tomas Hertl. ''He was great and that's kind of what we need from him in the back. He looked confident and that he made good plays on PK and it wasn't easy because we gave up some chances but it was a really, really strong game from him.''

Jake Allen made 20 saves for Montreal, which was 0 for 6 on the power play against San Jose's league-leading penalty kill unit.

''It's a bit of everything,'' said Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis. ''We'll look at the video and we'll learn lessons for this game, (the power play) was the difference tonight.''

''Maybe we just had to be in better spots for the low plays, I think we had a few chances to try and take it to the net,'' added Montreal forward Nick Suzuki. ''I kept watching it on the iPad, trying to figure out things during the game. I mean, I don't know how many chances we had on the power play but we had enough for us to score for sure.''

The Sharks opened the scoring at 1:33 of the first period when winger Alexander Barabanov attempted a wraparound and Nieto zoomed into the crease and tapped the puck in off a rebound.

Montreal coach Martin St. Louis challenged the play for offside, but video review confirmed that Barabanov was onside in the lead-up and the goal stood.

In the second, Canadiens forward Christian Dvorak appeared to beat Kahkonen to tie the game, but the goal was called off. The referee indicated that Montreal winger Evgenii Dadonov took an interference penalty on the play when he checked defenseman Nick Cicek in San Jose's net.

The Canadiens started the third period on a 5-on-3 power play due to a late delay-of-game call, but the Sharks successfully killed the penalty and countered with three goals.

Hertl redirected a Kevin Labanc pass into the back of the net at 2:29 of the third. Just over a minute later, defenseman Matt Benning located Couture with a pass and the Sharks' captain beat Allen on a breakaway to give the Canadiens a 3-0 advantage.

Hertl iced the game at 17:46 of the period by scoring into an empty net.

{allcanada} Samsonov full participant at Maple Leafs practice

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Ilya Samsonov
was a full participant in practice for the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

The goalie has missed the past 12 games with a knee injury he sustained in a 2-1 win against the Boston Bruins on Nov. 5.

"I'm happy to be back, it's really important for me," Samsonov said. "Last couple days, I feel no pain. I'm so excited and am ready to play."

Coach Sheldon Keefe said Samsonov remains day to day and will be reevaluated on Wednesday prior to Toronto's game against the San Jose Sharks (7 p.m. ET; SN, NBCSCA, ESPN+, SN NOW).

"It seems like he is feeling good," Keefe said. "He's got a lot of good work in both on the road and again here today. Today was a big step for him. It wasn't an overly extensive practice for us today, but he was still able to get some work in a team setting with a little bit of 5-on-5 in front of him, so that's part of his progression. In terms of where he goes from here, we will just call him day to day at this point. Any player recovering, [the medical staff] always wants to see how he is the day after he pushes it, so we will get a better sense (Wednesday) maybe of what the next step looks like."

Samsonov is 6-2-0 with a 2.23 goals-against average and .921 save percentage this season.

Matt Murray, who has started six of the past eight games for the Maple Leafs, is 5-1-1 with a 2.44 GAA and .927 save percentage.

{allcanada} McDavid using voice, skill to be true leader for Oilers

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEW YORK -- Connor McDavid's brilliance on the ice isn't lost on Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft.

"I'm aware that we're witnessing something special, a generational superstar playing in the prime of his career," Woodcroft said.

But Woodcroft also wants people to know about the McDavid the hockey world doesn't see or hear.

It's the McDavid who is using his skill and his voice to become a true leader for the Oilers.

"You get to see the final product and I get to see the work that goes into that final product," Woodcroft said. "I see somebody who is driven by team success. Where I've seen a lot of growth in him, and I've been around him at different points for the last eight years, I see growth in driving a team with his leadership, not just in setting an example but in holding teammates to a certain standard and holding people to account. I have seen a lot of growth in that area for him."

McDavid hinted at that growth in September during the NHL North American Player Media Tour in Las Vegas.

"I think just being a little bit more comfortable, more comfortable with being captain, comfortable in the room, comfortable doing media stuff," McDavid said on the "NHL @TheRink" podcast.

McDavid has always been comfortable on the ice, winning the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer four times and the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP twice.

The 25-year-old leads the NHL this season with 39 points (17 goals, 22 assists), including a goal and two assists in Edmonton's 4-3 overtime win against the Florida Panthers on Monday.

It was a second straight win for the Oilers (12-10-0), who play the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center on Wednesday (9:30 p.m. ET; SN360, SNW, TVAS).

Woodcroft, along with McDavid's teammates who have been with him the longest, see that comfort manifesting in his ability to lead the Oilers, by example and with his voice.

"He's become more vocal, I think," Edmonton defenseman Darnell Nurse said.

Nurse has been McDavid's teammate since the Oilers selected the center with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. They were roommates at one time.

"First and foremost, he's a leader by example and goes out and sets the work ethic not only on the ice but off the ice also," said Nurse, who was drafted No. 7 by Oilers in the 2013 NHL Draft. "And he's gotten more and more comfortable with speaking up when something needs to be said. He's got a good pulse of the room, a good pulse of everybody."

Darnell Nurse #25 and Connor McDavid #97 of the Edmonton Oilers talk against the Seattle Kraken during the third period at Climate Pledge Arena

Nurse remembers McDavid early in his career when he was barely audible.

"He probably didn't want to [speak up]," Nurse said. "There's a lot of pressure that comes along with it."

McDavid himself said he always felt "super awkward" when forced to use his voice either in the room or in the media earlier in his career.

"I'm sure it was like pulling teeth," he said.

Now it's not.

"Now he doesn't really care, he just says what's on his mind," Nurse said.

Forward Leon Draisaitl also said McDavid has developed his voice over the past few seasons.

"He's naturally not the loudest guy and obviously he does a lot of his leadership in terms of his work ethic and the way he leads on the ice, but over the last couple years he's really developed a vocal type of leadership in the room," Draisaitl said.

Draisaitl, also McDavid's teammate since 2015, said he has seen what Woodcroft has noticed.

"That's how you build a culture, right," Draisaitl said. "That's how you create something special, by holding guys accountable and he does that. It doesn't really matter who it is, he does it to anybody and he does it the right way."

Woodcroft called that type of leadership "priceless."

"I think that resonates," Woodcroft said. "I can walk in the room and say, 'This is the standard.' But when your best player and the best player in the game lives it on an everyday basis, I think the next generation of Edmonton Oilers have no choice but to fall in line."

Like Dylan Holloway, the Oilers' 21-year-old forward who was a selected No. 14 in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Holloway is learning the inner workings of McDavid the captain this season. Like everyone else, he already knew about McDavid the player.

"Nothing he asks out of us he's not willing to do himself," Holloway said. "That's the biggest thing. Whenever we need a little spark or anything, he'll be the first guy to get in on the forecheck, first guy to go make a play, make things happen.

"As a kid growing up I was watching him and now that I'm able to witness it firsthand in practice and from the bench, it's just pretty cool to see how he does it. He asks a lot of the guys, but it's nothing that he doesn't hold himself to already."

Much of what the Oilers are saying about McDavid is what Nathan MacKinnon's teammates were saying about him before he led the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup championship last season.

The Oilers believe the arc with McDavid will eventually be the same.

"I've been involved in some international tournaments with [MacKinnon] and I saw what he did to us in the playoffs last year," Woodcroft said. "Certainly a top player at the top of his game who helped their team get to where they wanted to get to. I see Connor McDavid as being not only an elite player and an elite person, but somebody growing into that leadership role.

"He wants the Edmonton Oilers to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a Stanley Cup and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get that done."

{allcanada} Bouchard, Draisaitl help Oilers beat Panthers 4-3 in OT

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Evan Bouchard scored the tying goal with 5 seconds remaining in the third period and Leon Draisaitl got the winner 22 seconds into overtime as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 on Monday night.

Bouchard took a desperate shot from the slot late in regulation and beat Panthers goalie Spencer Knight stick side for his third of the season to tie it. Early in the extra period, Draisaitl took a pass from Connor McDavid and scored his 13th for the win. The 27-second gap marked the shortest time between a team scoring a regulation goal and an OT goal in NHL history.

McDavid finished with a goal and two assists, Tyson Barrie also scored and Zach Hyman had three assists for the Oilers, who have won two straight. Stuart Skinner stopped 25 shots.

Matthew Tkachuk, Anton Lundell and Brandon Montour scored for the Panthers, who have lost five of their last six games. Knight finished with 36 saves.

Tkachuk opened the scoring 3:49 into the game as he took a pass that deflected off the skate of Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse and put it past Skinner after taking a couple of whacks at the puck for his 10th of the season.

Edmonton had a great chance a few minutes later when forward Mattias Janmark tipped a shot by Barrie through Knight's legs, but the puck ran out of steam before crossing the goal line and Knight was able to plop down on it.

The Oilers looked to have tied the score seven minutes into the second period as Hyman put his own rebound past Knight in tight, but the goal was waved off after officials determined he had kicked the puck into the net following a quick review.

Hyman helped make up for it shortly after on the power play, sending a pass more than half the length of the ice to spring McDavid on a breakaway. He beat Knight with a backhand shot following a deke for his 17th of the season with 9:25 left in the middle period.

Edmonton took the lead 5:18 into the third as Brett Kulak's shot took a lucky bounce off Hyman right to the stick of a pinching Barrie, who netted his fourth.

Florida tied it 2-2 about 5 1/2 minutes later as Lundell finished off a nice three-way passing play by deflecting Sam Reinhart's pass home, pushing his goal streak to three games.

The Panthers regained the lead with 4:44 remaining after a mad scramble in front on the power play saw the puck come back to Montour, who fired it into the top corner. Edmonton challenged the play, saying Tkachuk knocked the puck down with a high stick on the play, but the goal stood.

NOTES

The Oilers have allowed six goals in the first three minutes of a game this season, the most of any team in the NHL. ... Undrafted forward James Hamblin made his NHL debut for the Oilers after being called up from Bakersfield of the AHL. ... The Oilers were without injured forwards Kailer Yamamoto (undisclosed), Evander Kane (wrist surgery), Warren Foegele (undisclosed) and Ryan McLeod (undisclosed). ... The Panters were missing star forward Aleksander Barkov (illness) and Anthony Duclair (torn Achilles). Recent call-up Alexsi Heponiemi took Barkov's roster spot.

{allcanada} Former Canucks employee says she was discriminated against; team denies allegations

A former Vancouver Canucks employee says she was subject to discrimination during her time with the organization, and alleges her "sex and physical and mental disabilities played a role in the termination of her employment."

Rachel Doerrie, former analyst and assistant to the video coach with the Canucks, shared a document via Twitter Sunday evening which details her account of her time with the franchise and the circumstances around her dismissal. In the six-page document, with her counsel listed as Peter A. Gall, it is alleged she was "'subject to compound discrimination, as a result of the combined disadvantaging effect of a number of prohibited grounds', in this case, her sex and physical and mental disabilities."

Doerrie, who was hired as an analyst with the Canucks on Jan. 20, 2022, points to a series of interactions with Canucks assistant general manager Emilie Castonguay -- hired four days after Doerrie, and to whom Doerrie reported directly -- that she believes led to the termination of her employment without cause by Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin on Sept. 27.

Both the Canucks and Castonguay denied all allegations made within the document.

Castonguay released the following statement in response to the complaint:

"I take a lot of pride in my work with the Vancouver Canucks, being a good leader, a person of high moral character, and always respecting and putting my co-workers first. These allegations by Ms. Doerrie are absolutely not true and her allegations of what I said to her are false and inaccurate. At no time was Ms. Doerrie treated differently due to gender, a mental disability, or a physical condition. As this is a legal matter, I will not make any further comments and will respect the process."

Canucks Sports & Entertainment also released a statement, saying they as an organization "strongly disagree" with the allegations:

"We strongly disagree with the allegations brought forth by Ms. Doerrie. Our organization provided Ms. Doerrie with all the necessary resources, support and opportunities to succeed in her role. We acted in good faith and abided by our contractual obligations, both during and after Ms. Doerrie's employment with the organization. As this is a legal matter, we will respond accordingly at the proper time."

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Andrei Kuzmenko scored at 1:12 of overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday night.

Kyle Burroughs and Ilya Mikheyev also scored for the Canucks, and Thatcher Demko made 32 saves.

''It's a big one,'' Demko said ''That's one of the ones that we probably haven't gotten yet this year where, you know, we maybe did some things wrong but stuck together as a group and found a way to win.''

Luke Kunin scored twice, and Logan Couture also connected for San Jose. Kaapo Kahkonen stopped 16 shots for the Sharks.

''Obviously, very frustrating not to win this game. Totally winnable game for us,'' Kahkonen said.

Kunin forced overtime, tying it off a pass from Erik Karlsson with 5:15 to go.

''That was courage and character,'' Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said. ''I mean, you know, we were obviously tired. We were obviously getting outplayed in the third period. But, you know, we found ways to bounce back twice was great.''

Couture gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead on a power play at 7:05 of the third period, scoring his 12th of the season. Mikheyev tied it 1:09 later, and Pettersson put the Canucks up 3-2 on a tip-in with 9:16 left.

''I liked the tempo, for the most part, all night long,'' Sharks coach David Quinn said. ''Listen, that's a good hockey team. I know what their record is but look at that lineup. They've got a lot of good hockey players.''
