{allcanada} Higuain scores late winner to spoil TFC's final home game of season

TORONTO — Gonzalo Higuaín came through at just the right time as his 86th minute goal lifted Inter Miami CF to a 1-0 win to spoil Toronto FC's final home game of the season on Friday.

Higuaín's goal was the culmination of a very strong second half by Miami (13-13-6), which was in desperate need of a victory having entered the game holding onto the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by way of a tiebreaker.

Miami controlled the ball throughout the game, finishing with 59 per cent possession. However, Toronto (9-17-7) was able to hang with the visitors, especially in the first half.

TFC had the majority of the quality scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes, most of which came from the feet of Federico Bernardeschi. The Italian star was the architect of several strong challenges from the Toronto side, but Miami's defence matched even his best efforts.

Miami came out for the second half with a renewed energy, turning their game-long possession advantage into serious threats against Toronto goalkeeper Quentin Westberg, who made two saves in the opening half.

His strong play was an encouraging sign for the Reds, despite the loss. TFC had allowed four goals in each of their last three contests entering Friday night.

Westberg's best effort came in the 73rd minute as Miami forward Ariel Lassiter came through the defence on a near breakaway, only to be stopped cold. Toronto defender Richie Laryea was able to clear the follow-up attempt.

Despite earning several quality scoring chances throughout the game, both sides had trouble converting them into goals.

After a tentative opening 10 minutes, both sides began to open up as play started to flow more smoothly. A Michael Bradley steal set up the first great scoring chance of the game, but a staunch defensive effort from Miami prevented Toronto from getting off a quality shot.

The action continued from there, as the two sides began to trade opportunities throughout the first half.

Both 'keepers had their moments to shine in the opening 45 minutes, as Miami's Drake Callender made several strong saves, including one in the 36th minute on Bernardeschi. The Toronto forward took a strong shot that deflected off a Miami defender and looked set to be the match's first goal, but Callender made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

TFC was able to threaten Callender with more chances after Higuaín's goal, but none of them materialized into a game-tying goal.

The loss marks the end of Toronto's home schedule for 2022, as the team will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season. TFC will play the Philadelphia Union on Oct. 9 in its final outing of the regular season.

Long snapper Jake Reinhart is retiring after eight CFL seasons, the Toronto Argonauts announced on Friday.

The 32-year-old was the longest-serving player in the Argos' organiation, joining the team prior to the 2014 season.

Reinhart is currently out for the season with an elbow injury, the same elbow injury that cut his 2021 season short. For his career, the Guelph, Ont., native has appeared in 117 regular season games, two playoff games and one Grey Cup.

"Today is the worst, good day of the year as Jake Reinhart, our longest serving player is officially retired," said Argos general manager Michael Clemons in a news release. "If you don't recognize the name, that is a good thing because long snappers only get noticed when something goes wrong. {allcanada} Dahlstrom out six months for Maple Leafs with shoulder injury

Remove Android Pattern, PIN, Password and Fingerprints in 5 minutes.

TORONTO -- Carl Dahlstrom is expected to be out six months for the Toronto Maple Leafs because of shoulder surgery.

The defenseman was injured during a 3-0 preseason win against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, when he was cross-checked by Canadiens forward Rem Pitlick along the boards and left at 15:07 of the first period.

"Carl is going to require surgery," Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said Friday. "It's going to be a six-month recovery, so bad news on that front."

Keefe also said forward Mitchell Marner, who had 97 points (35 goals, 62 assists) last season, could be used as a defenseman during the regular season.

Dahlstrom, who began the game on a defense pair with Victor Mete, had two assists in three games with the Maple Leafs last season and 14 assists in 49 games with Toronto of the American Hockey League.

In 67 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto, he has 12 assists.

"I haven't seen him yet or spoken to [Dahlstrom] myself so I'm not quite sure (how he's taken the news)," Keefe said. "There's never a good time for such a thing but particularly when you've come off a summer of training and preparation and you are competing for a spot in the NHL, you get that news, it's difficult and of course it takes a shot at our depth as well, so that's not one you like to see."

Defenseman Jordie Benn, who began the game on a pair with Morgan Rielly, sustained a groin injury against the Canadiens on Wednesday and is expected to miss at least three weeks.

The 35-year old left the game at 9:13 of the first period.

"For Benn, he's going to be a minimum of three weeks so I guess we can look at that as positive news in the sense it is not as bad as initially thought," Keefe said, "but it's going to require some time to recover."

Benn, who signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Maple Leafs on July 14, had eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 39 games with the Minnesota Wild last season and has 135 points (25 goals, 110 assists) in 595 NHL games with the Dallas Stars, Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks and Wild.

{allcanada} Marner could be used as defenseman for Maple Leafs, Keefe says

Wondershare PDFelement 8 for Windows

TORONTO -- Mitchell Marner could be used as a defenseman during the regular season, Toronto Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said on Thursday.

"Throughout camp, he has been taking some reps on the back end, and he and I have been talking about it since before camp began," Keefe said.

In addition to playing right wing on a line with center Auston Matthews and left wing Michael Bunting at practice, Marner spent some time playing on a pair with defenseman Morgan Rielly.

Keefe stressed, though, that Marner's use in that role would only be situational.

"There could be opportunities in games where we might want to give him a look on defense, whether we are trying to score a goal or playing from behind, whatever the case might be, that we might give him some opportunity there to see what that looks like," Keefe said.

"That's something we will continue to look at through the preseason and make a determination from there on how we might use it."

Keefe said he was intrigued by the possibility of getting another offensive player on the ice, provided they could handle the defensive responsibilities. Marner had 97 points (35 goals, 62 assists) in 72 games last season.

"Mitch is a right shot, a highly offensive player that can help us, and it allows us to put on another high impact forward like [William] Nylander in that case, so it's something worth looking at for us I think," Keefe said.

On Wednesday, the Maple Leafs spent the final 40 minutes of their 3-0 preseason win against the Montreal Canadiens using forwards Alexander Kerfoot and Calle Jarnkrok on the back end after defensemen Jordie Benn (groin) and Carl Dahlstrom (shoulder) each sustained injuries in the first period.

"Last night was, we hope, a one-off and we don't have to resort to something like that, but players move around now and forwards end up having to cover and play on defense far more frequently probably than in the history of our game," Keefe said.

"Having those skill sets are important, so I think naturally players younger and younger are going to come up with those type of skill sets, plus we see a lot more forwards converted to defensemen at younger ages. You look at the way Cale Makar (defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche) plays the game, there's a lot of young kids growing up who are going to want to look like that."

Although having two forwards cover on the back end was more out of necessity on Wednesday, Keefe thinks Marner has the ability to excel at defenseman in the right situations during a regular-season game.

"To me, the more and more I watch how we move around in the offensive zone, Mitch spends a lot of time (up at the blue line)," Keefe said. "Obviously on the power play he's up there quite a bit, so it was just a little more natural for me to consider that.

"The more and more I watch the clips, that's what stands out. So for me, it's knowing Mitch's skill set, and I've got a pretty good library of clips where he is actually playing defense. Even though he is a forward on that shift, he is in the defense spot, quarterbacking things and, at times, even defending, so that's sort of why we came to that conclusion."

{allcanada} WHL teams up with Orange Shirt Society before National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

WHL Truth and Reconciliation logo

CALGARY — The Western Hockey League and the Orange Shirt Society announced a new partnership on Thursday with initiatives to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools.

Orange Shirt Day, formally called National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is a statutory holiday that will be held on Friday. The WHL says its commissioned a special WHL Truth and Reconciliation logo, designed by Métis artist Kim Vizi-Carmen of Pinerock Graphics that will be worn as a helmet decal by all WHL players and officials from Friday through to Oct. 9.

"This partnership will help raise awareness and education about the impacts of residential schools," said Phyllis Webstad, founder of Orange Shirt Day and Ambassador for the Orange Shirt Society. "It is also building a bridge and creating relationships between the WHL and Indigenous communities — an important step toward reconciliation."

The WHL Truth and Reconciliation logo features the WHL logo anchored by the traditional Medicine Wheel, which represents the four directions of North, East, South, and West. Those four directions are also representative of spirituality in its various forms — mental, emotional, and physical; as well as elders, parents, youth, and children.

There are also four stars across the top of the logo, which represent the four major junior hockey league's four divisions — East, Central, B.C. and U.S. — along with the players and talent of the WHL.

The top of the WHL Truth and Reconciliation logo features two feathers representing honesty, truth and wisdom. At the base of the logo are antlers representing courage and strength. Where the antlers meet one will find the sun and the moon. The inclusion of the sun brings warmth, healing, and peace, while the moon serves as our protector, guardian spirit, and transformation.

"In support of the WHL's ongoing commitment to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I am proud to share this visual image for the helmet decal," said Vizi-Carmen. "The image is meant to honour survivors and communities by incorporating meaningful elements that represent the land, the strength of its peoples, and the greater spirit within us all."

The WHL said it will also participate in the Orange Jersey Project in February.

That initiative was created by the Orange Shirt Society and it aims to use the power of sport to educate young athletes about the history of the Indian Residential school system and strengthening the path toward truth and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

{allcanada} Maple Leafs defencemen Benn, Dahlstrom to miss time with injuries

Toronto Maple Leafs defencemen Jordie Benn and Carl Dahlstrom will both miss time after leaving Wednesday's preseason win over the Montreal Canadiens with injuries.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed after the game that Benn is dealing with a groin injury while Dahlstrom has a shoulder injury. The timeline for their return to action will come after additional evaluation.

The 35-year-old Benn signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Leafs in July.

Benn scored one goal and added seven assists over 39 games with the Minnesota Wild in 2021-22, his 11th season in the NHL.

The 27-year-old Dahlstrom, who is also on a one-year, $750,00 deal, appeared in three games with the Maple Leafs last season and recorded two assists. He had 14 assists over 49 games with the AHL's Marlies.

{allcanada} NHL Training Camp Buzz: Vancouver Canucks

Ilya Mikheyev is week to week for the Canucks because of a lower-body injury.

The forward did not practice Tuesday after he was injured during a 3-2 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames in a preseason game Sunday. Mikheyev had no shots on goal in 7:31 of ice time and left after getting hit into the boards 4:17 into the second period.

Mikheyev was playing on a line with center Elias Pettersson and wing Andrei Kuzmenko. He was replaced by forward Nils Hoglander.

Forward Conor Garland moved onto the top line with center J.T. Miller in place of Brock Boeser, who will miss 3-4 weeks after having hand surgery Monday. Kuzmenko moved onto the top power-play unit.

"When you don't have two of your top six guys, you're shuffling the lines a bit," Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "When one guy goes down another guy has got to step up. If they're good enough they'll make it tough on anybody that returns. That's the way I would look at it if I was the player. What a great opportunity."

Defenseman Travis Dermott was helped off the bench after leaving practice early Tuesday.

"He looked like he got hit there and just feeling a little woozy and we just ... if you're feeling feel a little woozy, just take the rest of the day off," Boudreau said. "We don't need anybody else getting hurt."

Vancouver opens the regular season against the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 12.

Jake Muzzin practiced with the Maple Leafs on Wednesday for the first time since training camp began.

The defenseman was held out of practice Thursday and Friday last week because of back discomfort and skated on his own away from the main group on Monday and Tuesday.

Muzzin, who skated on a pair with Justin Holl, departed halfway through the practice, though coach Sheldon Keefe said Tuesday that Muzzin likely would not partake in the full session.

Muzzin was limited to 47 regular-season games, because of two separate concussions and an undisclosed injury in April last season. He had 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in the regular season and three points (two goals, one assist) in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders announced Wednesday that both teams will wear orange jerseys for Friday's game on National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Having missed the past four months with an ankle injury, Montreal Alouettes running back William Stanback fielded questions from the media Tuesday with palpable excitement after his first practice back with the team.

"Bunch of excitement, emotions running through my head, being out there with my teammates once again: I miss it," said Stanback

The 27-year-old returned to his team after suffering an ankle injury in the Alouettes' season-opening loss to the Calgary Stampeders.

"It's been about three-and-a-half, four months. (The) last time I been on the field was June ninth, and just sitting at home, I was in a mental state where it was really hard for me to get through each day because right now, my life is nothing but football and family."

Having been absent from the backfield for so long, Stanback admitted the isolation and rehab process weighed on him.

"Not being able to participate in practices and travel with my guys and to go out there and face opponents every weekend, it kind of hurt."

Of those that helped him remain positive through his healing process, Stanback credited his family the most.

"Just being on the phone with my wife, talking on facetime with my kids every day, seeing the smiles on their faces, seeing how excited they are to see my name being brought up on TSN or RDS... me seeing them happy just always made me happy and helped me to continue every day."

As for how his ankle feels, Stanback said that while his ankle feels great, there's still some work to be done on his conditioning, comfort and getting back into rhythm

"I'm prepared to continue to work and make sure that I get my conditioning back up to par so when I do get back out there on the field, I  hit the ground running."

Alouettes head coach Danny Maciocia disclosed to reporters earlier that the plan is for the reigning East Division's Most Outstanding Player to dress on October 10th when the Als take on the Ottawa Redblacks, which Stanback believes he'll be ready for.

"I feel that if I had to play anytime sooner, I feel that I can play, just maybe be limited or something like that...I feel really good, I feel confident."

{allcanada} NHL says it's monitoring Aquilini situation

The National Hockey League released a statement Wednesday, saying that it is continuing to monitor a family situation involving Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini.

Aquilini has been accused of abuse by three of his adult children, a revelation made in a Vancouver courtroom on Tuesday by the lawyer of the 53-year-old Aqulini's ex-wife, Tali'ah Aquilini, who has applied to have the three continue to be declared children of the marriage for child support purposes.

Aquilini, who purchased his stake in the Canucks in 2004, has denied the allegations.

"We are aware of the allegations that have been made in the Family Court proceeding in Vancouver and have been in touch with Mr. Aquilini and his lawyers regarding same," the league's statement read. "Clearly, the parties have been involved in a most contentious divorce.  Mr. Aquilini has advised us that he categorically denies the allegations. We plan to continue to monitor the situation and, if necessary, will respond as we learn more as events unfold."

All three of the children still reside with their mother and are currently pursuing higher education. Tali'ah Aquilini alleges child support payments ended in September of 2021.

"It's really disappointing that I have to keep coming back to court in order to try to enforce Francesco's obligation to pay child support for the children," Tali'ah Aquilini told reporters outside the courtroom on Tuesday afternoon. "These are really amazing children. They are very intelligent, they are of good character, and they've worked hard in really vigorous programs."

A statement of denial was released on Aqulini's behalf later on Tuesday.

"The couple were divorced and reached a settlement in 2013," the statement read. "Mr. Aquilini has met and will continue to meet any child support obligations required by the law, but he has concerns about the veracity of the information provided in support of financial demands. It is unfortunate that allegations without merit are brought forward for a collateral purpose. He will have nothing further to say at this time as the matter is before the courts."

Aquilini was not present in the courtroom on Tuesday.

{allcanada} Uruguay tops Canada in final tune-up ahead of Qatar

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Nicolas De La Cruz and Darwin Nunez set the tone in the first half with a goal apiece as 13th-ranked Uruguay topped Canada 2-0 in a men's soccer friendly on Tuesday.

De La Cruz scored on a free kick from the left side just outside of the box in the sixth minute, and scored by the near-side post as goalkeeper Milan Borjan could not get enough on the ball to stop it.

Following a close miss on a volley shot from a Luis Suarez cross five minutes earlier, Nunez made up for it with a header goal in the 33rd minute off a cross from Suarez to put his side up 2-0.

It's one of the last World Cup tune-up matches for the 43rd-ranked Canadians before they take the field in Qatar in November. The national team takes on No. 24 Japan on Nov. 17 before taking the pitch Nov. 23 against Belgium in World Cup action.

Canada was coming off a 2-0 win over Qatar last week.

Despite conceding the two goals, Canada dominated possession in the first half (59 per cent to 41 for Uruguay) and was not short on scoring opportunities.

Alistair Johnston was just off on a header from a cross sent by Alphonso Davies in the 12th minute. A dozen minutes later, Cyle Larin found an opening, taking a pass from Davies, but his left-footed shot was saved.

In the 39th minute, Davies drew the attention of multiple defenders outside of the box before sliding a pass to an open Larin inside the box. With the ball bouncing in front of the Brampton, Ont., native, he had his shot blocked after attempting to get it set properly.

Larin missed again one minute later on a header following a cross from Samuel Adekugbe. In the 41st minute, Davies once again pulled the eyes of multiple Uruguay defenders and sliced a through ball to send a streaking Jonathan David into the box but his shot was stopped.

After a quiet start to the second half for both sides, Canada pressed again with eyes on closing the gap.

In the 63rd minute, Davies corralled the ball after a Canada cross was knocked away and found David driving towards the box. David turned around and shot from just inside the box but Sergio Rochet saved it leading to a corner.

After Davies' corner was cleared out of bounds, Uruguay handed the Canadians a free kick with a foul in the 64th. Stephen Eustaquio sent a pretty cross into the box, but Kamal Miller headed the ball just over the net.

Despite consistently being in Uruguay's end for much of the second half, Canada did not come any closer to putting the ball in the back of the net.

Canada finished the match having outshot Uruguay 11-6 (3-2 on target), controlling 56 per cent possession for the match and taking seven corner kicks.
