{allcanada} Redblacks record first win by upsetting Argonauts

TORONTO — The Ottawa Redblacks felt like it was just a matter of time before they removed the zero from the left side of the CFL standings column.

"Well it certainly breaks that 'well, you haven't won a game yet, right?'" Redblacks coach Paul LaPolice said after his club's 23-13 win against the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field on Sunday.

"We're happy to get a win and happy to survive for 24 hours and enjoy it."

Ottawa receiver Jaelon Acklin had a touchdown reception and led his team with 144 receiving yards. Caleb Evans, who has assumed starting quarterback duties since Jeremiah Masoli went down earlier in the season with a leg injury, completed 24 of 29 passing attempts and threw for 286 yards and had two touchdowns.

The Redblacks improved to one win and six losses and find themselves back in the hunt for a playoff berth in a meagre CFL East Division.

"It feels like we got a monkey off our back because we were so close. I think five of those games came down to the last few minutes," Acklin said.

The Redblacks opened scoring on their first drive of the game when kicker Lewis Ward connected on a 46-yard field goal. The field position for Ottawa was set up by a 46-yard pass from Evans to Acklin earlier in the drive.

The Argos tied the game 3-3 on their ensuing drive. Boris Bede hit a 42-yard field goal with 7:36 to play in the opening quarter.

The Redblacks reclaimed their three-point lead when Ward hit a 31-yard field goal with a second left to play. Ottawa led 6-3 going into the second quarter.

Toronto responded with the first major of the game. McLeod Bethel-Thompson found Brandon Banks for a 29-yard touchdown pass as the Argos took a 10-6 lead after Bede's successful convert kick with 7:17 left to play in the second quarter.

Bede hit his second field goal from 32 yards, giving Toronto a 13-6 lead with 55 seconds remaining until halftime.

Ottawa quickly moved the ball downfield before Evans found Acklin for a 30-yard TD catch. Ward's extra point tied the game 13-13 and that was the score heading into the second half.

"That helped us get a bit of a spark," Evans said of the late scoring play. "After that we felt like we've got to come out and keep our foot on the gas."

The reception from Acklin allowed the CFL's leader in receiving yards to eclipse 100 yards for the third consecutive game.

In the third quarter, the Redblacks reclaimed the lead on their opening drive of the half when Ward hit his third field goal to put Ottawa ahead 16-13.

In the fourth quarter things went south for Toronto in a hurry. While defending deep in their territory, Argos' defensive lineman Wynton McManis was given an objectionable conduct penalty for throwing the shoe of a Redblacks player he tackled.

With the short field position, Evans found Nate Behar for a seven-yard TD pass. Lewis's convert kick put Ottawa up 23-13 in the fourth quarter.

Toronto's Chris Edwards was also assessed an objectionable conduct penalty after the Behar touchdown.

"We've got to find a way to police ourselves," Argos head coach Ryan Dinwiddie said after the game. "The only way I know how to fix it sometimes is that sometimes someone's got to go.

"When things don't go our way we act like children and have temper tantrums and then we let our teammates down."

The Argos never recovered after the Ottawa score. Throughout the game, Toronto's offence was plagued with dropped or overthrown passes.

"We had those four balls, and that's a 34-20 win and it's not even close," Bethel-Thompson said. Toronto's pivot completed just 26 of 40 passing attempts for 340 yards and one touchdown for the Argonauts (3-3), who had their streak of wins against the Redblacks at BMO Field halted at five games.

END ZONE: In the second quarter, Bethel-Thompson eclipsed the 10,000-yard passing mark for his CFL career, becoming the fifth Argonaut to reach the milestone. … Ottawa hosts the Calgary Stampeders (4-2) on Aug. 5, while Toronto hosts the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-5) on Aug. 6.

The Montreal Alouettes have added to their offensive line, signing former Seattle Seahawk Pier-Olivier Lestage, the team announced Sunday.

Lestage, 24, was selected by the Alouettes in the second round (10th overall) in the 2021 CFL Draft. The former Université de Montréal Carabin signed as an undrafted free agent with the Seahawks following the NFL Draft in May 2021. Lestage spent over a year in the NFL on the Seahawks' practice roster, appearing in three exhibition games with them in 2021.

"We are very pleased with this addition. There is no doubt that Pier-Olivier will solidify our offensive line," said Alouettes General Manager Danny Maciocia in a statement. "We believed that his selection was a calculated risk because of the NFL, but we now realize that this choice could pay off for us."

The Saint-Eustache, QC., native played three seasons with the Carabins, including time under Maciocia during his time at the collegiate level.

In 2019, Lestage was named a RSEQ first team All-Star and second team All-Canadian. Two years later, Lestage participated in the Tropical Bowl in Florida and the Gridiron College Showcase in Texas.

In addition, the Alouettes added American defensive tackle Mustafa Johnson and Canadian linebacker Eric Mezzalira to the practice roster.

{allcanada} Toronto FC draws with Revolution for rare road point

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The learning curve in Major League Soccer continues for Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi.

The Italian stars played their first three games for Toronto FC, including two on artificial turf, and travelled more than 8,000 kilometres this week as the team went from BMO Field to Vancouver and back before flying to Boston.

Goalkeeper Alex Bono called it a "trial by fire" for the two new designated players.

"I'd like to tell them they've seen some of the toughest conditions, with the flights and the fields," added Bono, who marked his 150th appearance in all competitions from Toronto. "I want to tell them it gets better. So just stick with it."

Toronto returns home after picking up a rare point on the road Saturday with a 0-0 draw against the New England Revolution. TFC had a shot at the win but was foiled when Djordje Petrovic stopped Insigne from the penalty spot in the 81st minute.

The six-foot-four Serbian goalkeeper dove to his right, getting one hand on the ball.

"A great save," said Bono. "He was at full stretch. He read it right. Lorenzo put it on target and he made a save. What are you going to do?"

The result made for a 1-1-1 week for TFC following a 5-3 penalty shootout loss Tuesday in Vancouver to the Whitecaps in the Canadian Championship final and a 4-0 league romp over visiting Charlotte FC last Saturday that saw Insigne and Bernardeschi turn heads in their MLS debut.

Bernardeschi had a goal and an assist while Insigne had an assist in the Charlotte win.

Toronto (6-12-5) remains winless away from home in league play this season (0-7-4), with just four points out of a possible 33. On a positive note, Saturday marked a second straight clean sheet for Toronto which ended a string of 29 league games without a shutout when it blanked Charlotte.

New England (6-7-9) saw its winless run grow to six (0-2-4) while extending its unbeaten streak at home to eight games (3-0-5). The Revs last went six or more consecutive matches (0-6-3) without a victory from July to September 2018 under former coach Brad Friedel.

Referee Ismir Pekmic pointed to the penalty spot in the 75th minute after Toronto substitute Deandre Kerr went down as Matt Polster challenged for the ball just inside the box. Insigne waited to take the kick as Canadian video assistant referee Carol Anne Chenard checked the play.

Pekmic was summoned to the pitch-side monitor but did not change his mind, much to New England's displeasure.

Newly signed Revs designated player Giacomo Vrioni, making his home debut off the bench, had a chance to win it in stoppage time but his deflection from in-close flashed wide.

Toronto outshot New England 15-13 (3-2 in shots on target) and had nine corners to the Revs' three. Insigne had six of Toronto's shots, including all three on target.

Both teams appeared off their game in the opening half, with passes going astray and final touches lacking.

Going into weekend play, 13th-place Toronto was three places and four points below New England in the Eastern Conference — and six points out of a playoff position.

Insigne, Bernardeschi and fellow Italian Domenico Criscito all started for Toronto. Insigne and Bernardeschi showed flashes of their skills on the artificial turf at Gillette Stadium but overall it was a frustrating evening for the star duo.

Still Bernardeschi showed his class in the 58th minute, with a left-footed long-range shot out of nowhere that rattled the goalpost as Petrovic looked on.

Insigne also came close in the 44th minute but his shot from close range was stopped by Petrovic after Bernardeschi found his countryman in the penalty box with a nice diagonal ball. It was Toronto's lone shot on target in the half.

Bernardeschi exited in the 68th minute. Four minutes later, Insigne's swerving shot from outside the box forced an acrobatic one-handed save from Petrovic.

Toronto coach Bob Bradley believes Insigne and Bernardeschi are doing just fine, given the circumstances.

"It's just so important to keep reminding everyone that for both Lorenzo and for Federico, this is still like pre-season," he said. "There's been so few training sessions -- regular full training sessions -- that we've had. The day before the game or a recovery day (after a game), those aren't real training sessions.

"These guys are trying to jump in, understand the league, get a feel for things, travel, different kind of surfaces. It's not easy," he added. "I really appreciate the way these guys go about it. I think they see what we're trying to do and they feel good about it. Those are things we want to build on."

The 35-year-old Criscito has also lived up to his billing, providing a steady presence at left fullback.

Toronto also got fine performances from centre back Lukas MacNaughton and captain Michael Bradley, Bob's son.

Saturday's matchup featured two of the league's most successful coaches in New England's Bruce Arena and Toronto's Bradley, who came into the game with 246 and 188 regular-season wins, respectively.

The two go back. Bradley served as an assistant coach under Arena at the University of Virginia in 1983-84 and assisted Arena at D.C. United in 1996-97. They also worked together with the U.S. Olympic team.

Chris Mavinga and Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty slotted in for Toronto, replacing Shane O'Neill and Kosi Thompson. Toronto was without injured goalkeeper Quentin Westberg and midfielders Mark-Anthony Kaye and Noble Okello.

New England star striker Gustavo Bou, an Argentine designated player who leads the team with seven goals, was out with a leg injury.

New England midfielder Emmanuel Boateng came on in the 69th minute, making his 150th MLS regular-season appearance.

Former Toronto striker Jozy Altidore, who signed with New England after his contract was bought out by TFC in February, joined Mexico's Puebla this week on loan until January.

TFC, which had won its previous two visits to Foxborough, now has a 4-10-6 record at Gillette Stadium.

{allcanada} Lions come back to defeat Roughriders, match best start since 2007

REGINA — The B.C. Lions are off to their best start since 2007 following a 32-17 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday.

The Lions overcame a 17-4 second quarter deficit in the win as they climb to 5-1, matching their start from 2007. The Lions finished first in the West Division that year, with a 14-3-1 record before getting upset by the Riders 26-17 in the West final.

The Riders drop to 4-4 with the loss as they head into a bye week.

Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke, in his first season as a starter, continued to live up to the hype, completing 27 of 33 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 1,941 yards on 153-of-193 passing, with 16 touchdowns.

The Lions got touchdowns from Rourke on a one-yard run along with a 15-yard reception from Jevon Cottoy, and a 14-yard catch by Dominique Rhymes. Kicker Sean Whyte hit field goals of 16 and 39 yards and added a single on a miss from 46 yards. Stefan Flintoft had two singles on kickoffs. The Lions also got a safety when Marcus Sayles tackled Riders running back Jamal Morrow in the end zone in the second quarter.

Fajardo, on a one-yard run, and Tevin Jones, on an eight-yard reception, both scored touchdowns for Saskatchewan. Brett Lauther added a 28-yard field goal.

{allcanada} Blue Bombers' Jeffcoat (hip), Ellingson (hip) out, Demski returns vs. Stampeders

Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat and wide receiver Greg Ellingson are to miss a second consecutive game with hip injuries while Nic Demski returns on Saturday when the Bombers take on the Calgary Stampeders, according to the team's official depth chart.

The 31-year-old former Texas Longhorn is coming off his best season in 2021, where he recorded career highs in sacks (9) and forced fumbles (4) on top of racking up 26 tackles. Jeffcoat's efforts earned him a spot on the West Division and CFL All-Star Teams for the first time in his career. His talents adjacent to Willie Jefferson's allowed the Bombers to have the best fourth-quarter defence in the CFL and capture back-to-back Grey Cup titles.

In five games played this season, Jeffcoat has recorded seven tackles, an interception and a fumble.

Ellingson, 33, will also miss his second consecutive game after being sidelined last week in his return to Commonwealth Stadium against the Edmonton Elks.

Through six games played, Ellingson leads the Blue Bombers in receiving yards (518) and touchdowns (three).

Demski, 28, returns to the Bombers' lineup after spending time on the six-game injured list, missing the last four games with an ankle injury he suffered in Week 3 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Winnipeg native ranked second on the 2021 Bombers in receiving  yards (654), third in touchdowns (four) and receptions (48). Demski hauled in four receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown to lift the Bombers over the hometown Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field during the 2021 Grey Cup.

Through three games played in the 2022 campaign Demski has recorded 11 receptions for 126 yards prior to his injury.
