{allcanada} Draisaitl records 3-point game, Oilers beat Jets 3-2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Leon Draisaitl had two goals and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Saturday night in a matchup of teams slowed by injury and chasing playoff spots.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the tiebreaker with 5:16 remaining and assisted on both of Draisaitl's goals as the Oilers snapped a two-game skid.

Logan Shaw and Kyle Connor scored for the Jets, who have gone 1-3-1 in their last five games.

Connor McDavid sent a backhand pass through the crease to Draisaitl, who banked his 38th goal of the season off of Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck and in at the 6:27 mark of the opening period.

It was Draisaitl's league-leading 100th point of the season, becoming the first German-born player and seventh player in Oilers franchise history to hit the century mark in consecutive seasons.

The Jets controlled the pace in the second period and were rewarded 13 minutes in when Shaw was sprung on a breakaway and beat Oilers goalie Mike Smith.

Just 44 seconds later, Blake Wheeler made a nice move to set up Connor for his 33rd goal of the season and 100th of his career.

Draisaitl deflected home a shot by McDavid on a power play with 13 seconds left in the second period to tie it up 2-all.

The Oilers surged back in front with five minutes to play in the third as Draisaitl fed Nugent-Hopkins and he picked the corner for his 19th.

Winnipeg had intense pressure with their goalie pulled for the final couple minutes, but Smith was solid to preserve the win, finishing with 38 saves.

NOTES: Defenseman Kris Russell returned to Edmonton's lineup after a lengthy absence with a concussion and forward Zack Kassian came back from serving a seven-game suspension. In addition, forward Kailer Yamamoto is back skating with the team and is expected to return from an ankle injury shortly. ... {allcanada} O'Reilly scores only goal in shootout, Blues beat Stars 4-3

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Ryan O'Reilly scored the only goal in the shootout to lead St. Louis to a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night and extend the Blues' winning streak to seven games.

David Perron, Tyler Bozak and Brayden Schenn, who scored in his fourth straight game, had goals for the Blues.

The Stars got goals from Tyler Seguin, Denis Gurianov and John Klingberg, who scored with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

The Blues and Stars are each 2-3 in shootouts this season.

Jake Allen (10-6-3) made 28 saves for the Blues and turned aside all three shootout attempts, winning for the second time in four starts - both against Dallas.

Anton Khudobin to score the shootout game-winner.' data-reactid="36">Allen had a prime view of O'Reilly going in on Stars goalie Anton Khudobin to score the shootout game-winner.

"He's got some quick hands you know. He's got a different stick but his hands are, you know, really quite probably some of the quickest in the league," Allen said. "So when he gets in those shootout situations, he's got some tricks and it was good to see. It's a great move."

Khudobin made 25 saves and lost his third straight start.

"Another good effort from (Khudobin), like you know what you're going to get, right?" Stars interim coach Rick Bowness said. "He kept us in there when the penalties were coming. Another great game. You're seeing what you expect from him every night now."

St. Louis has a seven-game winning streak for the second time this season. In addition, the Blues won eight straight in December. During their current streak, the Blues have outscored opponents 26-12.

"It's always a lot more fun when you're winning. It gives you a little bit of confidence to keep moving forward and playing better," Bozak said. "You always play better when you have that confidence. We have a lot of depth, a lot of chemistry and different guys can step up and step up on different nights. I think that's why we have the success we do."

The Stars made it 1-0 on a fluke goal at the 8:30 mark in the first period. After Seguin won a face-off to the left of Allen, John Klingberg flung the puck from inside the blue line, hitting Seguin's stick in the circle and deflecting in off the Blues' Colton Parayko. It was Seguin's 17th goal of the year.

The Blues answered just over four minutes later. Vince Dunn kept the puck in the Stars zone and fed Perron, who threw it on net to beat Khudobin for his 25th goal of the season. The goal was Perron's second in his last 14 games, with both goals coming against Dallas.

The Blues jumped ahead 2-1 on a power-play goal 4:19 into the second period. With Jamie Oleksiak in the box for tripping, Bozak deflected in a backhanded shot by Dunn. The goal was Bozak's 13th of the season and just his second in his last 17 games.

After going up 3-1 on Schenn's goal, Gurianov took advantage of a turnover and scored on a breakaway with just 4:54 remaining in the second to make it 3-2. It was Gurianov's 20th of the season.

That set up the late-game heroics by Klingberg, but it wasn't enough for the Stars, who finished their season series against the Blues winless, going 0-3-2.

"It was just a big goal at the right moment," Seguin said. "St. Louis is taking off, so we're just trying to stay in the mix and still hunt down first place."

NOTES: Stars D Stephen Johns missed his third straight game with an upper-body injury. He is listed as day-to-day. ... Stars F Tyler Seguin has scored three goals in his last four games. ... Khudobin lost for the first time in regulation in five career starts against the Blues. ... St. Louis F Jordan Kyrou was scratched due to an illness. Blues F Jaden Schwartz had his four-game point streak snapped. He has 20 points in 32 career games against Dallas.

{allcanada} Petry's goal in OT leads Canadiens past Hurricanes 4-3

MONTREAL (AP) -- Jeff Petry scored 52 seconds into overtime, lifting the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.

Phillip Danault, Max Domi and Brendan Gallagher scored in regulation for the Canadiens, who snapped a two-game skid despite giving up a 3-0 lead. Tomas Tatar had two assists.

''We haven't been good with leads,'' Gallagher said. ''We have to work through this and learn to play with the lead.''

It was the fifth consecutive home game in which the Canadiens failed to protect a multigoal cushion, and are 1-2-2 in those games.

''We were better tonight,'' Gallagher said. ''We were more aggressive. But at the same time, three pucks still end up in the back of our net. You have a two-goal lead or a three-goal lead, they need to be locked down.''

Charlie Lindgren made 27 saves in his first start since Feb. 4, when he won 5-4 in a shootout in New Jersey. Carey Price got the night off after playing 11 consecutive games.

''Lindgren played a good game,'' coach Claude Julien said. ''There was a lot of traffic in front of him on their goals. He made some big saves, especially in the dying seconds.

''I'm pretty sure you're going to see him again. The goal is not to ride Price into the ground. The goal, as you saw tonight, is to give Charlie the opportunity to play here. And if he plays well, why not?''

Haydn Fleury, Joel Edmundson and Justin Williams scored for the Hurricanes, who forced overtime after being down 3-0.

''We can't chase games,'' Williams said. ''Chase and chase and chase. It's exhausting. Our urgency from the start of the game just has to be better. It's just a mental thing.

''Sometimes maybe you have to trick your mind to think you're down a goal to start the game.''

Carolina's goaltending troubles continued with both James Reimer (lower body) and Petr Mrazek (concussion) injured last week in Toronto. Backup Anton Forsberg, who also played Friday, allowed three goals on 20 shots before being pulled in the second period. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 18 of 19 saves in relief.

The only goal Nedeljkovic let in was to Petry in overtime on a breakaway.

The Canadiens had blown two-goal leads in their previous four home games (0-2-2), and they again didn't make it easy on Bell Centre fans.

''It would definitely be a much different feeling in here if we were to lose in overtime, especially with the lead that late in the game,'' said Petry, who scored his 10th of the year. ''It's a sense of relief to get the win. But we have to figure out a way to end it in regulation. We have to have that killer instinct, that mentality.''

Edmundson made it 3-2 at 1:14 of the third when his wrist shot from the blue line soared into the top corner of the net. Andrei Svechnikov was screening Lindgren on the play.

After a back-and-forth third, Williams tied it for Carolina with 1:17 remaining by deflecting Edmundson's point shot.

The Canadiens were leading 8-0 in shots when Danault completed a nice passing play from linemates Tatar and Gallagher to slide the puck five-hole on Forsberg. With the assist, Tatar set a career high with 59 points.

Montreal started the second period with similar energy to the first and scored twice within 17 seconds to take a 3-0 lead.

Domi capitalized on a scramble in front of Forsberg for his fourth goal in as many games at 3:46. With fans still cheering for Domi's goal, Gallagher fired a one-timer on a rebound from Tatar at 4:03 to end Forsberg's night.

The Hurricanes got one back when Fleury threw a puck on net from the point that found its way through a couple of bodies and under Lindgren's glove at 7:45.

With Williams in the penalty box for slashing, Lindgren denied Vincent Trocheck on the short-handed breakaway with five minutes left in the second.

NOTES: The Hurricanes are one point behind Columbus for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. ... Montreal improved to 14-16-6 at home this year. ... Canadiens D Xavier Ouellet returned after missing three games with a concussion. ... Montreal snapped a three-game losing skid against Carolina.

{allcanada} Anisimov scores shootout winner in Sens' win over Detroit

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) -- Artem Anisimov scored twice in regulation and added the shootout winner as the Ottawa Senators beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Saturday night.

Scott Sabourin also scored in regulation for the Senators, who earned their first shootout win of the season. Marcus Hogberg made 25 saves for his fifth win.

Anisimov's goals won't count as a hat trick, but the forward is labeling it one.

''The puck crossed three times the goal line,'' Anisimov said with a laugh.

It was a career night for the 31-year-old, who had 10 shots on goal.

''I always want to shoot the puck in games, but sometimes you see better opportunity and you pass, but the pass (is not) connected and it's a turnover,'' Anisimov said. ''I decided why not shoot the puck and the puck was around me always and I just needed to shoot it.''

Frans Nielsen, Dylan Larkin and Sam Gagner scored for the Red Wings, who have lost nine of 10. Jonathan Bernier stopped 36 shots.

''I thought we did some good and some bad,'' Red Wings coach Steve Yzerman said. ''Better than the last couple outings for sure. I thought we dug in better and I liked the fact we scored a power-play goal after we gave up the lead. Don't like the fact that we gave up the lead. I thought both were preventable plays.''

The Red Wings were coming off an embarrassing 7-1 loss to Minnesota on Thursday and had talked about giving a better effort.

''As a group we felt ashamed a little bit,'' Jonathan Bernier said. ''We're professionals, obviously it's a tough season, but you've just got to compete and come in every night and give your best and that's all you can do. Obviously we put ourselves in this position, but you've just got to compete until the end.''

The Senators tied the game 2-2 just 1:48 into the third period as Sabourin scored his first since the season opener.

Anisimov gave Ottawa the lead with his second goal of the game when he took a pass and scored over Bernier.

The Red Wings came right back and tied the game with a power-play goal. Gagner tipped Filip Hronek's point shot and handcuffed Hogberg on the redirection.

Detroit extended its lead to 2-0 early in the period as Tyler Bertuzzi dropped a pass to Larkin, who fired a wrist shot and beat Hogberg to the glove side.

The Senators cut the lead in half with a power-play goal late in the period. With Nick Paul screening Bernier, Anisomov got it through a crowd for his 14th of the season.

The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the first period on Nielsen's fourth of the year.

The Senators had a number of chances on the power play, but Bernier came up with a couple of big saves.

Shortly after, Adam Erne pushed his way to the net, but the puck trickled off his stick to Nielsen, who put it behind Hogberg.

NOTES: Ottawa's Thomas Chabot played his 200th NHL career game. ... Colin White and Anthony Duclair missed their third straight game due to injury. ... This was the final meeting between the teams. Ottawa won the season series 2-0-1.

{allcanada} Marincin gets rare goal, Maple Leafs beat Canucks 4-2

TORONTO (AP) -- Martin Marincin picked a great time to get on the scoresheet.

After being the odd-man out on Toronto's blue line in most games this season, Marincin scored a rare goal to put Toronto ahead in the third period, and the Maple Leafs beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 on Saturday night.

Marincin, who entered the night with four career goals in 223 games, got his first of the season and only his second since 2016-17 just 18 seconds into the third.

''I was so, so happy. First goal this season, so I was excited for that,'' said the 28-year-old playing in his 23rd game of the season. ''It's not my role (to score) but I like it. I can do it. I have to be more active.''

He grabbed his own rebound off the end boards and beat Demko glove side to put Toronto up 3-2.

''It's not every night you see a guy who's 6-foot-5 who plays a shutdown role do something like that,'' said Toronto's Auston Matthews, who also scored. ''I've seen it before, yeah. You don't see it often, but when he brings it out it's usually a treat.''

Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe, who also coached Marincin with Toronto of the AHL, wasn't as surprised as many in the Scotiabank Arena to see him score.

''Got to love the initiative of Marty to finish it,'' Keefe said. ''He takes a lot of heat around here, up and down (to the minors) but when you call upon him he gives you everything he has and it's all you can ask for.''

Frederik Gauthier and Zach Hyman also scored to help the Maple Leafs win for the fourth time in five games. Frederik Andersen stopped 25 shots in his seventh straight start as Toronto increased its lead to five points on Florida -- which lost to Chicago in a shootout -- for third place in the Atlantic Division.

Tyler Motte and Tanner Pearson had goals for Vancouver, which came in six points behind first-place Vegas in the Pacific Division. Thatcher Demko finished with 26 saves.

''We're still good in standings but we got to win games, got to get points,'' said Canucks star Elias Pettersson, who was held scoreless with no shots on net in 21 minutes of ice time. ''I'm not playing my best hockey right now. I want to be better. ... We like to score goals. We just have to find a way to win.''

Kasperi Kapanen nearly put the game away for the Maple Leafs with just over eight minutes to go, but Demko went post to post to rob him with his left pad and keep it a one-goal game.

Andersen made his biggest stop of the night with 4:50 remaining when he got a pad down on J.T. Miller off a rebound.

Canucks coach Travis Green felt his team deserved a better fate.

''We played a good road game, battled back,'' said Green. ''Bit of an unlucky goal, the third one. And it was a good response from our team coming into a tough building against a good team. Quite easily could have gone the other way.''

Hyman followed soon after with an empty-netter, his career-high 21st goal of the season, to seal the win.

Both goalies had rough starts by combining to allow four goals on seven shots in the first 10 minutes of the game before settling in.

Gauthier opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game on Toronto's first shot, taking a pass from Rasmus Sandin and snapping it blocker side on Demko from the top of the right face-off circle.

Motte responded for Vancouver at 5:28 after a strong forecheck. Jay Beagle won a puck battle behind the net and put a pass out front to Brandon Sutter, who slid the puck over to Motte at the side of an open net for an easy tap in.

Matthews restored the lead for the Maple Leafs only 57 seconds later when he cruised down the left wing and snapped it five-hole on Demko from a bad angle. It was Matthews' 47th, moving him two behind Boston's David Pastrnak for the league lead.

Pearson drew the Canucks even again with 8:58 to go in the first, putting home a rebound from the side of the crease.

Toronto's William Nylander had the best scoring chance of the second period when he got a step on Vancouver's Quinn Hughes for a half break before the rookie defenseman forced him to lose control of the puck and slide into the post.

NOTES: The Canucks scratched Jordie Benn, Zack MacEwen, Micheal Ferland (concussion), Josh Leivo (knee), Tyler Graovac (lower-body), Brock Boeser (rib), Jacob Markstrom (lower-body). ... Toronto scratched Timothy Liljegren, Ilya Mikheyev (wrist laceration), Morgan Rielly (fractured foot), Cody Ceci (ankle), Andreas Johnsson (meniscus), Jake Muzzin (broken hand).

{allcanada} Sporting KC beats Whitecaps in season opener

VANCOUVER — Alan Pulido and Gadi Kinda each scored their first Major League Soccer goals as Sporting Kansas City defeated the Whitecaps 3-1 on Saturday at B.C. Place.

Former Whitecap Erik Hurtado added a third goal in extra time as Sporting KC began its season with a win.

Pulido signed with Kansas City in December having spent the first 12 seasons of his career in Mexico and Greece.

Kinda was loaned to Sporting KC in January by Israeli Premier League club Beitar Jerusalem.

Jake Nerwinski replied for Vancouver, which saw its record in home openers drop to 5-4-1 in the team's 10-year history in MLS.

After a last-place finish in the Western Conference in 2019, the Whitecaps opened their 10th season in MLS with 13 new players on their roster, and with original Whitecap Russell Teibert wearing the captain's armband.

Marquee striker Lucas Cavallini was acquired by the Whitecaps in the off-season to help ignite their offence. After scoring four goals in pre-season, Cavallini was held off the scoresheet in his regular-season debut but showed fans his offensive instinct several times during the match. He rang the ball off the goalpost late in the first half and had a shot smothered from in close by opposing goalkeeper Tim Melia in the 88th minute.

Sporting Kansas City dominated possession in the early going. In the 17th minute, Sporting KC's new striker Pulido opened the scoring, heading the ball past the outstretched right hand of Crepeau for his first MLS goal after Ilie Sanchez earned a free kick from a dangerous spot just outside the box.

The Whitecaps tied the score 1-1 in the 28th minute. Another newcomer, David Milinkovic, ran the ball along the goal line before feeding it to the sliding defender Nerwinski, who tapped it into the open net from close range for his first career goal at B.C. Place.

In the 39th minute, Sporting KC re-took the lead when their new midfielder, Kinda, converted a pass from Luis Martins with a curling kick into the top corner of the net.

There was no scoring in the second half until Hurtado beat Crepeau in dying seconds of added time. Attendance at B.C. Place was 22,120.

The Whitecaps' next game will be on the road, against the L.A. Galaxy. They'll return to B.C. Place on Mar. 14 to host the Colorado Rapids.

NOTES: The Whitecaps debuted their new Wave jerseys, inspired by the city of Vancouver and the surrounding water … Cavallini, a native of Toronto, held his two young children in his arms during the singing of the national anthems … Erik Godoy remains sidelined with a left calf strain … The Whitecaps acquired centre midfielder Janio Bikel from CSKA Sofia of the Bulgarian league on Friday. {allcanada} Urruti's winner leads Impact to season opening win over Revolution

Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Classmates - HideOut.tv - GameStop - SnoreX

MONTREAL — A late wonder goal from Maximiliano Urruti handed Thierry Henry a victory in his Major League Soccer coaching debut.

Urruti scored the winner from distance in the 80th minute as the Montreal Impact came from behind to defeat the New England Revolution 2-1 in their MLS season opener on Saturday afternoon.

"Maxi, I'm so happy for him," said Henry. "People keep on asking me if he can score. He did. Hopefully that can be a long streak of goals for him. He worked so hard, like everybody else.

"He scored on a play we've been practising a lot. And what a finish. He could have scored three goals today. He got one, and it was the winning goal."

With the game tied 1-1, Saphir Taider sent a deep ball from his own half toward a streaking Urruti. The Argentine forward took the ball in stride and let it bounce once before lobbing it over goalkeeper Matt Turner from just outside the penalty area. Turner allowed two goals on three shots.

The entire Impact team mobbed Urruti to congratulate him as the 21,006 fans at Olympic Stadium cheered.

"For me, the best was the celebration," said Urruti, who scored four goals in 31 games last year. "I'm very happy. My first goal this year. The most important thing is the team. We played very well, 100 per cent of the game."

The goal came seven minutes after New England appeared to have taken a 2-1 lead. Substitute Wilfried Zahibo put the ball past Clement Diop in the 73rd following a free kick. Referee Chris Penso went to the video replay and determined Zahibo was offside.

The Revolution could not recover from that turn of events. New England has not won a season opener since 2013.

"After the VAR, it slowed the game down," said New England defender Henry Kessler. "It's no excuse but it was tough. But that's part of the modern game. It's something that you have to deal with and you have to be ready for — whether you're 2-1 up or it's still 1-1. It's just part of it."

New England (0-1-0) had one more chance to equalize but Tajon Buchanan headed a ball off the post in the 87th minute as Montreal (1-0-0) held on to improve to 5-1-3 in home openers.

First-year coach Henry gave Diop the start between the uprights over Evan Bush, possibly signalling a new era in Montreal. Bush had been the team's regular starter since 2014. Diop made five saves.

Despite playing two CONCACAF Champions League matches to start the year, the Impact looked out of synch to begin their ninth MLS campaign. Their first touches were heavy, through balls did not connect and passes were errant.

The miscommunication was evident when the Revs scored in the 13th minute off a corner taken short. Cristian Penilla sent a cross into the box and Teal Bunbury was left completely unmarked — poor coverage by Luis Binks — for the perfect volley.

The Impact also struggled on set pieces last season.

"We have to work on (set pieces) again," said Henry. "We have to work on a lot of stuff, in all fairness. But, it's a process."

With long-term injuries to captain Jukka Raitala (fibula) and Rudy Camacho (knee), central defenders Binks and Joel Waterman made their first MLS starts.

Things picked up offensively for Montreal and Waterman played a key role in the 37th-minute equalizer when he headed Urruti's corner across the face of goal to Romell Quioto, whose header flew past a diving Turner.

Zachary Brault-Guillard was an important piece of Montreal's offensive strategy. The defender's offensive contribution nearly led to a goal in the 64th when he connected with Urruti in the six-yard box. Urruti's shot squeaked through Turner's legs but the Revs goalkeeper got a small piece of it.

Notes: It was Montreal's first season opener on home soil. … New England's Carles Gil, last year's MLS newcomer of the year, missed the game with a foot injury. … Polish designated player Adam Buksa made his MLS debut for the Revs.
