{allcanada} Llorente, Felix, Costa score, Atletico Madrid beats MLS

ORLANDO, Fla. — Major League Soccer's elite had no answers for Atletico Madrid.

The 10-time Spanish League champions beat the MLS All-Stars 3-0 Wednesday night, with Marcos Llorente, Joao Felix, Diego Costa scoring goals to pace the rout before a sellout crowd of 25,527.

The loss was the fourth straight for MLS in its annual All-Star game, which matches the league's top players against international competition.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone felt the game was much closer than the final score.

"It was an interesting game. It was competitive," Simeone said through an interpreter. "In the second half, we were able to do things that allowed us to win."

Llorente scored in the 43rd minute and Feliz and Costa came off the bench to score late goals in the rain-delayed match away before a sellout crowd of 25,527.

"The league has grown each day. The league will continue to grow," Simeone said. "In the second half, we saw a dynamic MLS team that could have hurt us."

The MLS's best have faced international opponents 16 times in the All-Star Game. The past two years, Italian powerhouse Juventus and Spain's Real Madrid won on penalty kicks after the teams played to 1-1 draws through 90 minutes.

Wednesday night's match at Exploria Stadium — a 25,500-seat, soccer-specific facility that opened two years ago — culminated a week of related events thrusting Orlando into the soccer spotlight. The city also hosted the MLS All-Star game in 1998, attracting a crowd of 34,416 to the Florida Citrus Bowl.

"It gives a great representation of the league," said Orlando City's James O'Connor, who coached the MLS All-Stars. "It's a challenge for some of the young players to test themselves against some of the best players in the world. I think we have some of the best players in the world in the league. When you look at the quality of the play from a few of the individuals tonight, there were some exemplary pieces and passages of play from both teams. I thought it was a very entertaining game."

Heavy rain sent fans scurrying for cover about an hour before the scheduled kickoff, which was delayed 34 minutes, and the showers continued for much of the match. Atletico controlled the tempo, outshooting MLS 12-1 in the opening half — with D.C. United's Wayne Rooney getting off the All-Stars' only attempt — a right-footed shot from outside the box that sailed over the top of the net in the 26th minute.

Llorente scored off a nifty pass from Rodrigo Riquelme, a 19-year-old midfielder who delivered the ball off his heel. Llorente finished with a shot that deflected off the hand of diving goalkeeper Andre Blake of the Philadelphia Union.

MLS had a couple of scoring chances early in the second half, however LAFC's Diego Rossi misfired on a right-footed shot from the left side of the net in the 47th minute and Atletico starting goalkeeper Antonio Adan made his only save when Seattle's Nicolas Loderio tried to score from the same area in the 55th minute. Atlanta's Ezequiel Barco was rejected on a free kick in the 80th minute and another opportunity ended with Chicago Bastian Schweinsteiger's shot on a direct free kick veering just right of the net in the 82nd.

Atletico put it out of reach in the closing minute with Felix scoring in the 85th minute and Costa in the 93rd.

"The first half I thought we had probably a 15-minute spell where we looked and played with danger. It looked like we were going to get control of the game," O'Connor said. "For me, the second half, the passages, the play, there were some good opportunities."

{allcanada} Zagidulin following Rittich's path to Flames

CALGARY -- Artyom Zagidulin saw the path David Rittich took to the Calgary Flames and hopes to follow it.

That's why the 23-year-old Russia-born goalie signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Flames on April 9.

"The offer came and I thought about it," Zagidulin said through a translator at Flames development camp in July. "I decided that it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I decided to come."

In June 2016, the Flames signed Rittich, then 23, to a one-year, two-way contract out of the Czech Extraliga. Last season, he went 27-9-5 with a 2.61 goals-against average, .911 save percentage and one shutout in 45 games for Calgary and will compete with Cam Talbot for the No. 1 job this season.

Zagidulin was 12-7-3 with a 1.96 GAA, .924 save percentage and four shutouts in 25 regular-season games as a backup with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League last season.

"I was sent a lot of video this year by (Calgary director of pro personnel) Derek MacKinnon … similar to when we found Rittich," Flames goalie coach Jordan Sigalet said. "There's a lot of positives. You see a real explosive goalie. He's good on his edges. He reads the game and play really well. Decent size (6-foot-2, 180 pounds).

"You just never know how it'll translate over to North America. With [Rittich], he adjusted to the North American game pretty easily. It's a different game for sure. It's a tough transition. We'll try to help [Zagidulin] adjust as quickly as possible."

Calgary general manager Brad Treliving is ready to take a wait-and-see approach with Zagidulin.

"There are obviously similarities (with Rittich)," Treliving said. "The similarities are they're European guys that went undrafted. David has put in the work. David is three years (in) now, time in the minors. Let's pump the brakes a little bit, but certainly there's a historical perspective of saying, 'Hey, there's similar pasts.' [Zagidulin] put up good numbers in the KHL and that's a good league. We'll see."

Rittich has been helping Zagidulin with the transition, but it'll take some time to find out whether the two will be NHL teammates. Zagidulin, like Rittich did, is expected to start with Stockton of the American Hockey League.

"My agent was giving me the example of David, and I was at a camp (in the Czech Republic) for two weeks and we were training together for a little bit," Zagidulin said. "We got to know each other a little bit."

{allcanada} Neal's history with Oilers coach fuels optimism following trade

EDMONTON -- Dave Tippett has a history with James Neal, and it is one reason the new Edmonton Oilers coach believes the newly acquired forward will rebound this season.

"I've talked to James Neal since we traded for him," Tippett said at a charity golf tournament Wednesday. "I had James as a young player in Dallas and know him pretty well, and he's excited to have a bounce-back year. ... I know James has had a real good offseason, he's worked hard."

Neal played for Tippett with the Dallas Stars as an NHL rookie in 2008-09 and scored 37 points (24 goals, 13 assists) in 77 games. It was the first of 10 straight 20-goal seasons for Neal, who was acquired by the Oilers in a trade with the Calgary Flames for forward Milan Lucic on July 19.

"He's had a great summer," Tippett said. "I'm going to go out and see him next week and spend some time with him. He's excited to be an Oiler and I think he'll fit well in our lineup. The two or three times I've talked to him so far, [his motivation] is very high."

Neal, who turns 32 on Sept. 3, had 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists), the fewest of his 11-season NHL career, in 63 games with Calgary last season. In 2017-18, Neal had 44 points (25 goals, 19 assists) for the Vegas Golden Knights.

"I think it's probably a combination of two things," Tippett said of Neal's struggles last season. "He didn't play well enough for the coach to put him in those key situations he wanted to be. He ran through a couple of injury situations, and once you lose that confidence and lose where you are it's tough to get it back. They were a good team all year, I think it was probably less about him and probably more about other players playing above him."

Neal has four years remaining on a five-year, $28.75 million contract (average annual value of $5.575 million) he signed with Calgary on July 2, 2018.

"I've watched a lot of James' games, not as many from last year but more from his success in Vegas," Tippett said. "I think he'll be a good player on our team."

Selected by Dallas in the second round (No. 33) of the 2005 NHL Draft, Neal has 514 points (270 goals, 244 assists) in 766 games with the Flames, Golden Knights, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins and Stars.

"Adding Neal to our lineup gives us another top-six guy," said Tippett, who was hired by the Oilers on May 28, replacing Ken Hitchcock three weeks after Edmonton named Ken Holland general manager. "That just gives us a little more balance there."

Neal reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2017 with the Predators and in 2018 with the Golden Knights.

"The two years prior he's gone to the Final both years," Tippett said. "He wanted to let his body heal up and didn't feel like he was able to work out to the extent he normally did."

{allcanada} Stampeders quarterback Mitchell ready to test throwing arm

Calgary Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell says he's ready to throw the football again.

The CFL's Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup MVP in 2018 hasn't played since injuring the pectoral muscle in his throwing arm on June 29.

He was placed on Calgary's six-game injured list the following week.

"Everything is kind of healed up," Mitchell said Wednesday. "I'll start throwing Friday.

"Take it slow in practice and see how I feel. Depending on how everything goes down these next couple weeks, should be ready to go."

Mitchell says he's targeting an Aug. 17 return when Calgary hosts the Montreal Alouettes.

Calgary (4-2) is at home to the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday.

Mitchell left the June 29 game against the B.C. Lions with about three minutes left. He said his arm was troubling him during the game and he felt pain on his final two passes.

"The second-to-last throw I felt a little bit of a jerk in my pec," Mitchell said. "I figured 'hey, I'll try one more throw' . . . and that's when my pec told me 'no.'"

Backup Nick Arbuckle helped engineer Calgary's 36-32 come-from-behind victory at McMahon.

The Stampeders have gone 3-1 with Arbuckle as starting QB.

Mitchell reached 25,000 passing yards for his career before he was sidelined.

The two-time CFL MOP owns a pair of Grey Cup rings (2014, 2018).

"This is not a knee, a hip or ankle," Mitchell said. "This is my money-maker.

"This is what needs to last my entire career, so try to make sure I do it properly so I come back strong the rest of the season and strengthen it that much more in the off-season."

{allcanada} Argos acquire QB Collaros from Riders

Zach Collaros is returning to Toronto.

The Argonauts have acquired the 30-year-old quarterback in a trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for a conditional 2020 fourth-round draft pick.

TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor notes that the pick could be upgraded to a second rounder based around contract extension and playing time clauses.

The native of Steubenville, OH spent two seasons with the Boatmen in 2012 - winning the Grey Cup in 2012 as a backup to Ricky Ray - and 2013 before being released by the team in January of 2014 when he subsequently signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Cincinnati product is in his eighth CFL season and was in his second year with the Green Riders.

He appeared in 14 games last season for the team, throwing for 2,999 yards on 234-for-382 passing and nine touchdowns.

Collaros was placed on the six-game injured list with a concussion following a hard hit by Ticats linebacker Simoni Lawrence in the team's season opener. Lawrence received a two-game suspension for the hit. Collaros has been cleared to return to practice.

Cody Fajardo has emerged in Collaros's absence as Riders starter.

Re: [SurroundSound] Editing dts.wav or dts.flac

Yes, you would need to decode. And I wouldn't bother re-encoding.   Just leave it as PCM (wav).  Shrink it with flac if you want to. (Or re-encode in a *lossless* flavor DTS/Dolby if for some reason you insist on it being DTS/Dolby.)

In general it's risky to send something through lossy compression more than once.

{allcanada} Sogaard embracing competition to make Senators

OTTAWA -- Mads Sogaard is welcoming the challenge of competing for a job with the Ottawa Senators.

"I think it's pretty exciting, honestly. It's a good battle," the 18-year-old goalie said during Senators development camp in June. "For all of us, we're good friends, we get along well, so it's just a friendly competition. Obviously, we all want to make it and we all want to play for the Ottawa Senators, but you just take it day by day and try to focus on yourself and be the best player you can be."

Selected by Ottawa in the second round (No. 37) of the 2019 NHL Draft, Sogaard is the latest addition to a goaltending group that includes Craig Anderson and Anders Nilsson, and four other legitimate prospects: Marcus Hogberg, Filip Gustavsson, Joey Daccord and Kevin Mandolese.

"Goaltending depth, there's plenty of it right now," Senators chief amateur scout Trent Mann said during the 2019 draft in Vancouver. "I don't know the history of all the goaltending of the Ottawa Senators over all the years, but at this point in time, I don't know if there would be a better group of prospects in the system for the Senators than there [is] right now."

Although Sogaard (6-foot-7, 196 pounds) possesses great size for a goalie, he knows he has to improve his mobility in order to make the NHL.

"Honestly, I'm just working on being fast, [having] quick feet, and being able to snap down into my butterfly real fast," Sogaard said. "I think for a big guy, if he has good feet or if he's very good at coming across the crease and stuff like that, I think that's a really good goaltender."

His frame was a major selling point for the Senators.

"We honestly believe he's got a chance to play in the National Hockey League," Ottawa amateur scout Don Boyd said. "He's got North American experience now (Medicine Hat in Western Hockey League). He's a prototypical NHL-sized goaltender in today's game. The goaltenders are getting bigger and, in many cases, are the biggest guys on the team, really."

Last season, Sogaard split time with Jordan Hollett with Medicine Hat, going 19-8-2 with a 2.64 goals-against average and .921 save percentage in 37 regular-season games. Sogaard was named the starter for the playoffs and went 2-4 with a 3.16 GAA and .919 save percentage.

He will return to Medicine Hat this season but hopes it won't be for very long.

"I feel like I've recently found a home in Medicine Hat. I really enjoy that," Sogaard said. "But one day, I want to make Ottawa my home."

{allcanada} Broberg plots course from Sweden to Oilers

Ebates.ca - Amazon.com - Classmates - Wal-Mart - GameStop - Work From Home

Philip Broberg is looking to become the next in a long line of talented NHL defensemen from Sweden.

The 18-year-old was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round (No. 8) of the 2019 NHL Draft. He will return to Sweden to play with Skelleftea this upcoming season.

"I think Sweden has a lot of good defensemen in the NHL and many young kids look up to them and they want to be like them," Broberg said in July. "Then they go and put in the hard work and hopefully one day, you can be an idol for the next young guys."

Broberg grew up idolizing Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman. At 6-foot-3, 198 pounds, Broberg attempts to model his game after him.

"I like how he plays the game," Broberg said. "He's a big defenseman that can really skate and plays a two-way game as well. I'm a two-way defenseman that can skate the puck and pass it as well. I have a good shot and like to join the rush and score goals."

Broberg played with AIK in Sweden last season and had nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 41 games. He also played for Sweden in the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship and when it won the Under-18 World Championship.

"I think Broberg came as advertised; he's an excellent skater and I was impressed with his puck polish too," Jay Woodcroft, coach of the Edmonton's American Hockey League affiliate in Bakersfield, said at Oilers development camp in June. "He did some nice things with the puck. He's got a large frame that you know is going to have some time to fill that out."

The Oilers are looking for Broberg to develop into a top-four defenseman and are willing to be patient with him.

"I like that he's talented, I like that he's 6-foot-3, I like that he can skate and he can move the puck and he can transport the puck," Oilers general manager Ken Holland said at the 2019 draft in June. "I think if you're going to have a good team in the National Hockey League, you have to have a good defense. Those teams that go for long playoff runs, have good defense, deep defense, big defense. We're going to build a good, deep defense."

Broberg said he hopes playing another year professionally in Sweden will expedite his development. He had the option of coming to North America to play junior hockey but came to an agreement with Edmonton to stay in Sweden for at least another season.

"That will help because I've played against men and practiced against men the whole year and I think it's a lot different playing against pros than it is juniors for sure," Broberg said. "I know I need to get stronger and get more physically mature. Hopefully I'm going to work on that in Skelleftea next year and be more prepared to get in to the NHL."

{allcanada} Calgary city council approves arena deal with NHL’s Flames

Calgary is going to build a new arena for its NHL team despite financial challenges facing the city.

Council voted 11-4 on Tuesday approving a financial agreement with the owners of the Calgary Flames to build an event centre and replace the 36-year-old Saddledome.

The city and Calgary Sports and Entertainment announced last week a tentative agreement that equally splits the cost of a $550-million sports and entertainment centre.

The 35-year agreement keeps the Flames in Calgary for that term, with options to extend the agreement.

"The most fun will be proving to the city of Calgary we can exceed their expectations," CSEC vice-chair Ken King said outside council chambers. "This really is a great deal and we'll overachieve."

Talks broke off two years ago when the arena became a fractious civic election issue. The mayor was among those voting in favour of the deal Tuesday.

"We always need to continue building the things that make this city work and the things that make this city work for everyone," Nenshi said.

"It was important on this particular deal that we had a great financial deal and I think we did. It was also important for us to think about the intangibles that we're investing in, those things that make a city work.

"I wanted to make sure we had a great balance of social and financial return and I think we've accomplished that here."

The arena is part of a revitalization plan for the east side of downtown.

A depressed oil and gas economy in Alberta has contributed to a downtown commercial vacancy rate of 25 per cent. Council voted for $60 million in budget cuts just last week.

Members of the business community in the gallery applauded after council's vote Tuesday.

Coun. Jeff Davison, who headed an events centre committee, said the goal is to get shovels in the ground in 2021 following design consultations.

"Obviously there's 18 to 24 months worth of work we've now got to go and do in order to make that happen," he said.

"It's incumbent on us to build that public trust and that investor confidence back in our city and I think this project will achieve that."

The city vows municipal property taxes will not increase to pay for the event centre.

King estimated it will likely take three to four years to complete the arena once construction starts.

He speaks for Flames owners Murray Edwards, Alvin Libin, Allan Markin and Jeff McCaig.

"What we like is four men with a vision for the city who are prepared in this day and age to put up $275 million dollars to participate in a really important segment of our city," King said. "That's what we're proud of."

The city says the return to Calgarians will be is $400.3 million over the course of 35 years.

That figure incorporates revenues from ticket sales, a portion of naming rights, retail property taxes in the building, CSEC donations to amateur sports programming and tax generation in the district where it will be built.

But a net loss of $47 million over the 35 years on the project is also projected.

"The critical question we have to ask ourselves, are the thing we can't count, the intangible benefits — and every economist agrees there are intangible benefits to this kind of thing — are those intangible benefits worth $47 million in today's money for over a 35-year period? I am satisfied that they are," the mayor said prior to the vote.

CSEC is putting up the same amount of up-front cash it was prepared to give two years ago — $275 million.

One major difference in the current deal is the Flames will not pay property tax as the city proposed two years ago. The city will own the building.

CSEC, which also owns the WHL's Hitmen, CFL's Stampeders and NLL's Roughnecks, initially didn't want to give the city any ticket revenue.

The corporation has agreed to hand over 2 per cent from every ticket sold at the event centre to the city as a facility fee, which is estimated to bring in $155.1 million over 35 years.

All revenues generated by the event centre go to CSEC, minus its commitment to the city and the sharing of parking revenues with the Calgary Stampede board which is a third party in the agreement.

The Flames will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and day-to-day repairs of the event centre.

CSEC has also committed to upping its contribution to local sport groups, which the city states amounts to $75 million over the course of the 35-year term.

Calgary follows other large prairie cities investing in sports infrastructure over the last 15 years.

Winnipeg's new football stadium opened in 2013 and the downtown arena completed in 2004 became the home of the NHL's Jets, which returned in 2011.

The Edmonton Oilers moved into Rogers Place in 2016. Another edition of Mosaic Stadium opened in Regina a 2017 for the CFL's Roughriders.

{allcanada} With contract in hand Bennett retreats, recharges for season to come

When it comes to one of his favourite hobbies, Sam Bennett is by no means fishing for compliments.

When it comes to one of his favourite hobbies, Sam Bennett is by no means fishing for compliments.

Moments before he took his best shot at winning this year's Smashfest charity ping-pong title (that honour would go to five-time champ Patrick Eaves), Bennett took a few minutes to talk about his summer, specifically, how he's spending some of his down time.

"One of the main things I like to do in the summer is golf," said the 23-year-old native of Holland Landing, Ontario. "I'm a big golfer and I love to do that. The other thing I like to do is going up to my cottage [in Haliburton, Ontario], going out on the water, and doing some boating and fishing."

Bennett, who recently signed a two-year contract with an average annual value of $2.55 million (US) with the Calgary Flames, somewhat sheepishly admitted his golf and fishing games are both somewhat lacking.

Which one is he more proficient at?

"Neither," grinned Bennett.

That being said, the fourth overall pick of the Flames in 2014 does have at least one memorable fishing tale he can boast of.

"I think the biggest fish I've caught in my lake was an eight-pound bass," offered Bennett. "It was a pretty good-sized bass. Recently, I've haven't had much success. The last couple years, I don't have any good fishing stories to talk about. It was a pretty good tussle with that bass though. I think I was 14 when I caught it made me work for it. It was a good battle, for sure. Definitely happy with the outcome."

The forward is hoping for the same scenario for Calgary in 2019-20. The Flames, who topped the Western Conference standings last season with 107 points, were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round courtesy of the Colorado Avalanche.

Bennett and his teammates will face the Avalanche October 3 for the first regular-season games for both clubs.

Hockey is definitely on his radar these days.

"Where our cottage is, there's no cell service at all. Your phone is completely shut off and you're shut off from the rest of the world. Sometimes that's nice for a little while. For the most part, you try and use the summer not to think about hockey too much. But the moment you start skating and working out, you start thinking about the little things you want to improve upon and then you get that adrenaline going for the upcoming season."

Ahead of the Flames' date in Denver, Bennett will have some more opportunity to cast a line and perhaps have a happy fishing story to share in the locker room.

"I'd be good with that," said Bennett. "I've still got some time to see if we can get one. I'll give it my best shot."

As for which celebrity he'd like to hit the lake with, the former Kingston Frontenacs star picked a Hollywood comedy legend. "I think someone funny, like Will Ferrell, would be great. Even if you didn't catch anything, you'd definitely have a good laugh the whole time."

{allcanada} Callahan traded to Senators by Lightning for Condon

Ryan Callahan was traded to the Ottawa Senators with a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday for goalie Mike Condon and a sixth-round pick in the 2020 draft.

Callahan had 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 52 games with the Lightning last season, missing time because of a degenerative back condition. The 34-year-old forward, who has one season remaining on a six-year contract he signed with Tampa Bay on June 24, 2014, was placed on long-term injured reserve June 20.

"I don't think a year off or two years off is going to help it to be honest with you," Callahan told the Lightning website in June. "From what the doctors have said and the way I feel, it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to come back. ... If it wasn't for my back, I'd be playing next year ... wherever that may be. I wanted to be with the Lightning."

Selected by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (No. 127) of the 2004 NHL Draft, Callahan has 386 points (186 goals, 200 assists) in 757 games in 13 seasons with the Rangers and Lightning, and 39 points (20 goals, 19 assists) in 121 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"I would like to thank Ryan Callahan, who worked with us to make this trade happen, but also for all the great years that he's provided for our team, the leadership he brought to our team, the on-ice play he brought to our team," Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois said. "And his contributions to the community, his family raised significant amounts of money for pediatric cancer and for families going through situations with pediatric cancer. I appreciate everything he's done for our organization."

Condon was 0-2-0 with a 6.40 goals-against average and .800 save percentage in two starts for Ottawa in 2018-19; The 29-year-old missed most of last season because of a hip injury.

He is the second goalie acquired by Tampa Bay this offseason; the Lightning signed Curtis McElhinney to a two-year, $2.6 million contract (average annual value $1.3 million) July 1. Tampa Bay also signed Andrei Vasilevskiy, who was voted the Vezina Trophy winner last season as the NHL's best goalie, to an eight-year, $76 million contract extension (average annual value $9.5 million) Monday.

"I know it looks like we've got the goaltender market cornered," BriseBois said. "The reality is this is something we're going to have to manage. ... But I'd rather be managing too many goalies than not enough goalies. The reality is the plan stays the same. Andrei Vasilevskiy is our No. 1 goalie. Curtis McElhinney will be our backup in Tampa. I'm still working on finding a new organization for Louis Domingue. Scott Wedgewood we signed to be our call-up goaltender and start the season in (the AHL with) Syracuse [and] is still in that chair. Mike Condon will also be in Syracuse. Mike had a very promising career before it kind of got derailed a little bit by injuries. He was a good prospect. ... He's going to be a positive presence in Syracuse."

Originally signed as a free agent by the Montreal Canadiens on May 8, 2013, Condon is 45-58-17 with a 2.79 GAA, .905 save percentage and six shutouts in 129 games (117 starts) in four NHL seasons with the Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Senators.

{allcanada} TFC signs winger Benezet from French club side Guingamp

Toronto FC has signed French winger Nicolas Benezet.

A club spokesman confirmed the acquisition of the 28-year-old midfielder on Monday.

Benezet's Guingamp team was relegated to the French second tier after finishing at the bottom of Ligue 1 last season with a 5-21-12 record.

The French winger started with the youth academy of his native Montpellier before joining Nimes in 2010. He moved to Evian in 2013 with a loan spell at Caen before signing with Guingamp in July 2015.

The former France under-20 player is good in dead-ball situations, can find open teammates and score himself.

Toronto has already used the summer transfer window to bring in Venezuelan winger Erickson Gallardo, whose MLS debut had been delayed by a quad strain. Veteran U.S. international centre back Omar Gonzalez also joined the team during the window and has already cemented himself at the heart of the Toronto defence.

Also Monday, TFC confirmed the departure of backup forward Terrence Boyd by mutual consent.

{allcanada} July 30: Crosby taken No. 1 by Penguins in 2005 NHL Draft

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: July 30

2005: Sidney Crosby officially becomes a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins when he's taken with the No. 1 pick at the 2005 NHL Draft in Ottawa.

The Penguins select Crosby, a center from Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League billed as a once-in-a-generation player, eight days after winning a special draft lottery. With the 2004-05 season canceled, the NHL puts all 30 teams into a weighted lottery; the Penguins, last in the standings in 2003-04, are one of four teams to have three balls in the lottery and get the No. 1 pick.

Four years later, at 21, Crosby becomes the youngest captain in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup. He wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2016 and again in 2017 after helping the Penguins become the first team since the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998 to win back-to-back championships.

The 2005 draft also produces such future stars as goalie Carey Price (No. 5, Montreal Canadiens) and center Anze Kopitar (No. 11, Los Angeles Kings). The last pick in the draft, No. 230, is used by the Nashville Predators to take Patric Hornqvist, a forward from Sweden who scores 30 goals as a rookie in 2009-10 and later helps Crosby and the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017.

MORE MOMENTS

1973: Markus Naslund, a three-time First Team NHL All-Star, is born in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. The Penguins take Naslund No. 16 in the 1991 NHL Draft, but his career doesn't take off until after he's traded to the Vancouver Canucks on March 20, 1996. He scores 41 goals for the first of three consecutive 40-goal seasons in 2000-01 and is named to the NHL All-Star First Team in 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04. Naslund retires in 2009 after one season with the New York Rangers. Of his 395 goals in 1,117 NHL games, 346 come with the Canucks, who retire his No. 19 on Dec. 11, 2010.

1998: Kevin Lowe, a six-time Stanley Cup winner, retires after 19 seasons as a player and is named an assistant on the coaching staff of the Edmonton Oilers. Lowe, the first player drafted by the Oilers after they join the NHL from the World Hockey Association in 1979, plays on all five of Edmonton's championship teams from 1984-90. The Rangers acquire him in 1992, and he's a regular on New York's Cup-winning team in 1994. Lowe becomes Edmonton's coach in 1999, is promoted to general manager in 2000 and to president of hockey operations in 2008. In 2015, he is named vice chair and alternate governor of Oilers Entertainment Group.

2018: Jarome Iginla ends his NHL career by announcing his retirement in Calgary, the city where he becomes the face of a franchise. Iginla spends 16 of his 20 seasons with the Calgary Flames after being acquired from the Dallas Stars in a trade on Dec. 19, 1995, and goes on to become the Calgary/Atlanta Flames all-time leader in goals (525) and points (1,095). He spends a decade as captain. Iginla helps the Flames reach Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2004, though they lose 2-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He finishes his career with 1,300 points (625 goals, 675 assists) in in 1,554 NHL games

{allcanada} Canada’s Brayden Schnur, Eugenie Bouchard ousted from Citi Open

WASHINGTON — Canada's Brayden Schnur was bounced from the Citi Open on Monday, falling in the first round against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in straight sets.

The 24-year-old from Pickering Ont., hung around, but Tsonga and his serve were too much for Schnur as the Frenchman took the match 6-4, 7-6(2).

The veteran Tsonga smashed 18 aces, compared to Schnur's two, in a match that went one hour 28 minutes.

Schnur got into the ATP 500 tournament in Washington as a qualifier.

Meanwhile, Canadian Eugenie Bouchard suffered her latest defeat after being dropped in straight sets by American Lauren Davis.

Davis only needed 59 minutes to beat the Westmount, Que., native 6-1, 6-2.

The 25-year-old Bouchard, ranked No. 114, has lost eight matches in a row and hasn't won since the opening round of the Dubai tennis championship back in February.

Schnur became the fourth Canadian man to enter the top 100 rankings in mid-July, jumping 15 spots to No. 97 after making the final of the Winnipeg Challenger event. He entered Washington No. 99.

Canadians Milos Raonic and Felix Auger-Aliassime are also scheduled to play in the Citi Open. They received first-round byes.

{allcanada} July 29: Hall of Famer Lindsay born in Ontario

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: July 29

1925: Ted Lindsay, the left wing on the Detroit Red Wings' "Production Line" and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, is born in Renfrew, Ontario.

Lindsay makes the Red Wings as a 19-year-old in 1944; by the late 1940s, Lindsay, center Sid Abel and right wing Gordie Howe form one of the most famous trios in NHL history. Though Lindsay is listed at 5-foot-8, 165 pounds, he also earns the nickname "Terrible Ted" for his willingness to do anything to win.

Lindsay is a First-Team NHL All-Star in 1947-48, when he leads the League with 33 goals. He begins a streak of five consecutive seasons as a First-Team All-Star in 1949-50, when he wins the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's top scorer, and is again a First-Team All-Star in 1955-56 and 1956-57, when he has an NHL career-high 85 points.

But Detroit general manager Jack Adams, angered by Lindsay's efforts to help form a players union, trades him to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1957; he plays three seasons with Chicago before retiring. However, after four years off the ice, he returns to the Red Wings for the 1964-65 season and finishes with 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists) at age 39.

Lindsay finishes his NHL career with 851 points (379 goals, 472 assists) in 1,068 games and plays on four Stanley Cup-winning teams. He is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966. The award given to the most outstanding player as voted by the NHL Players' Association is renamed the Ted Lindsay Award in 2010. He dies at age 93 on March 4, 2019.

MORE MOMENTS

1994: The Los Angeles Kings trade left wing Luc Robitaille to the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Rick Tocchet and a second-round pick in the 1995 NHL Draft. The Kings make the trade although Robitaille has scored at least 44 goals in each of his first eight NHL seasons; however, his 44 goals in 1993-94 are 19 fewer than he scores in 1992-93. Robitaille returns to the Kings in 1997, spends four seasons with Los Angeles, and then plays two seasons with the Red Wings before returning to the Kings again in 2003 and spending his last two NHL seasons with Los Angeles.

2005: The New York Rangers announce the signing of goalie Henrik Lundqvist to an entry-level contract, five years after they select him in the seventh round (No. 205) of the 2000 NHL Draft. To the surprise of many, Lundqvist makes the Rangers at training camp a few weeks later and wins the starting job early in the 2005-06 season. He goes on to win at least 30 games in each of his first 11 full seasons in the NHL. Lundqvist becomes the first goalie to win 400 games with the Rangers when New York defeats the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 on Feb. 11, 2017.

{allcanada} Ticats expected to bring in QB Watford after Masoli injury

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are bringing in former Saskatchewan Roughriders backup quarterback David Watford following the season-ending injury to Jeremiah Masoli, according to TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor.

The 26-year-old appeared in four games with the Riders last season, throwing for 168 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

According to TSN's Matthew Scianitti, there is no timetable yet for when Masoli will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL.

Scianitti adds that Ticats head coach Orlondo Steinauer would not indulge any possibility the incoming QB could be a veteran like the recently retired Kevin Glenn. Despite the ailment, Masoli is expected to be active helping in the team's offence for the rest of the season.

Masoli suffered the injury during Hamilton's 23-15 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night.

Hamilton is atop the CFL standings with a 5-1 record and will head to Regina this week to play the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday.

Dane Evans came in for Hamilton in place of Masoli under centre on Friday night.

{allcanada} Altidore gives TFC victory over expansion FC Cincinnati

TORONTO — After shuffling his roster, and seeing it stumble to a 3-1 loss to visiting Houston last time out, Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney went back to his regulars and collected three points with a 2-1 win over slumping FC Cincinnati on Saturday.

Toronto dominated the first half and saw the expansion visitors try just one shot on goal — and that 37th-minute attempt was off-target. But 60 per cent possession and an 8-1 edge in shots (2-0 in shots on target) only translated into a 1-0 lead at the half before an announced crowd of 25,765 at BMO Field.

A terrific strike by Jozy Altidore — his fourth goal in four games — in the 50th minute made it 2-0. The U.S. international capped off a counter-attack, taking a pass from Nick DeLeon and curling a terrific right-footed shot from outside the penalty box past a diving Przemyslaw Tyton.

It was Altidore's ninth goal in 13 games this season. And it seemed to spark Cincinnati, which quickly answered the bell before an announced crowd of 25,765 at BMO Field.

Emmanuel Ledesma cut the lead to 2-1 in the 58th minute with a low, hard shot that beat Quentin Westberg. But Toronto held out for the victory. With Eastern conference rivals New England and Montreal both winning, the three points were needed — even if Toronto remains one point out of the final playoff spot in the East.

"Things are getting real tight and every point is vital," said captain Michael Bradley.

Vanney was happy with the result but thought his team, which finished with just three shots on target in total, could have made it easier on itself.

"We should have taken more out of the first half," he said.

Cincinnati made changes in the second half, man-marking holding midfielder Michael Bradley and pushing players high. It worked, with the visitors outshooting Toronto 10-2 in the second half (4-1 in shots on target).

Toronto eventually switched to a back three, with Chris Mavinga joining Omar Gonzalez and Drew Moor in the backline. Gonzalez continues to be force at centre back.

Nick DeLeon opened the scoring for Toronto in the 16th minute, using his head to flick home Gonzelez's header off an Alejandro Pozuelo corner past the six-foot-five Tyton. It was the fifth of the season for DeLeon.

Toronto (9-9-5) has now won three of its last four after picking up just seven of a possible 33 points in its previous 11 outings (1-6-4).

Saturday's game was the first of eight straight against Eastern opposition for Toronto.

Only Westberg, DeLeon and fullback Justin Morrow retained their place from the starting 11 beaten by Houston, which had lost its last eight road games. Pozuelo and Moor returned from injury and Vanney had the luxury of having Mavinga, Jonathan Osorio and Brazilian fullback Auro on the bench.

Vanney hinted after the game that his days of roster rotation are over.

"You won't see a lot of switching as we start to play week-to-week. There won't be a lot of interchange of guys," he said.

DeLeon called the loss to Houston "a good wakeup call."

"It was nice to have a full week of training without a midweek game to kind of get everybody on the same page," he said.

For the visitors, it was another painful night at the office. Cincinnati (5-16-2) has lost three straight, nine of its last 11 (2-9-0) and has taken just 10 of the 57 points available in its last 19 games (3-15-1). Mired at the bottom of the standings, the visitors have the worst defence in MLS having leaked 53 goals.

Cincinnati's road record fell to 2-10-1.

Change has been a constant for the expansion side. Saturday marked its 22nd different lineup of the season.

But interim coach Yoann Damet saw positives in the second-half fightback.

"I think it's a good example of what the team is capable of," he said. "The team is capable of great things like tonight. We created problems for Toronto. Playing on the road is never easy, especially Toronto is a tough place to play, so playing with the character that we showed tonight is a big satisfaction."

There was some bad blood in the 61st minute when Kendall Waston's scathing tackle felled Bradley. Waston was yellow-carded on the play. Bradley downplayed the incident afterwards, saying only "It's football."

The first-ever meeting of the clubs marked a return for Cincinnati defender Nick Hagglund, who was drafted by Toronto and spent five seasons here before being traded to his home town team in January.

There were hugs all around prior to warmup as Hagglund caught up with former teammates and Toronto officials. The 26-year-old defender did not get the start, however, with Damet giving Dutch defender Maikel van der Werff his first start, alongside Waston.

Newly signed Venezuelan winger Erickson Gallardo will have to wait for his TFC debut. Listed as questionable with a quad strain, he did not dress.

Both teams are back in action next Saturday. Toronto is at the New York Red Bulls while Cincinnati hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps.
