{allcanada} Coyotes rally, beat Oilers in overtime

Chemistry.com Chemistry.com

GLENDALE Ariz. - Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle has endured a few sleepless nights in the days leading up to the selection of the United States' roster for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He used Tuesday night to make a final impression.

Yandle scored two goals, including the game-winner with 6.5 seconds left in overtime, and set up the game-tying goal by Mikkel Boedker with 1:10 left in regulation as the Coyotes roared by from another multi-goal deficit and beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 Tuesday night.

"I've lost a bit of sleep thinking about this. I really want to be a part of Team USA and I think I've shown I've played my best to show what I can bring to the team," said Yandle, who has 27 points in 39 games.

"Antoine Vermette said the other day, 'It's your last day to showcase.' I don't know how much of the team has been picked or whatever it is. All I can do is hope I get the call now. It would be such an honor."

The Coyotes have played a franchise-record six straight overtime games, winning for just the second time during that run. But their dominance of Edmonton continues: Phoenix is 14-1-2 in its past 17 games against the Oilers, including 3-0-0 this season.

After Phoenix killed a penalty in overtime, Yandle took the puck from Edmonton's Jordan Eberle in his own zone, raced down the ice and with the puck on edge and Anton Belov on his back, he floated a shot over ex-Coyote Ilya Bryzgalov to ring in the New Year on a happy note for an overflow crowd of 17,416 at Jobing.com Arena.

"I don't know if it worked out for my benefit to have to beat that puck down the whole way. When you get that close to the net you just want to get anything at it and I was able to get it in the air," said Yandle, who was robbed on two other occasions when he tested Bryzgalov low to the glove side. "We know what a good goalie Bryz is from his time here. He made huge saves for them and he kept their team in there early when we were all over the net."

Taylor Hall assisted on all three Edmonton goals, by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, David Perron and Justin Schultz. Bryzgalov had been 9-2-0 against the Coyotes with a 1.96 goals-against average and 2-0-0 since he left after the 2010-11 season. But his 40 saves wasn't enough this time.

"Bryz played so well for us tonight and for us to let him down like that it isn't great," Hall said. "We need to make sure when a goalie plays like that for us he ends up getting the win."

The Coyotes have 14 points this season in games where they have trailed by two or more goals, the most in the NHL. And three nights after rallying from 2-0 down in Anaheim to steal a point against the Ducks, Phoenix was back in a familiar hole down 3-1 in the second period to take the steam out of the New Year's Eve crowd.

"We would much rather win in regulation, that's for sure," said Phoenix coach Dave Tippett after his team won for just the second time in eight home games after a 9-0-1 start in Glendale. "We talk about scratching and clawing, doing everything you can to get points in the regular season. Some games are a little more character-building than others."

Struggling Phoenix goalie Mike Smith was chased after allowing three goals on 10 shots and has won three of his last 14 starts (3-6-5). Backup Thomas Greiss stopped all 15 shots he faced in relief, and was off the ice for a sixth attacker when Yandle returned a pass from Boedker to force overtime - again.

The Coyotes dominated the first period, but didn't have much to show for it. Phoenix had 10 shots in the first four minutes and 21 for the period, four shy of the franchise record. But Bryzgalov kept the Oilers in the game with a variety of saves.

"Terrible period," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "We stood around and watched them play."

Phoenix broke through at 10:59 when Yandle ran down his own errant pass, curled into the right circle and beat Bryzgalov over the blocker with a wrist shot. Yandle extended his point streak to three games.

The Coyotes kept firing away, but after going without a shot for more than 14 minutes, Edmonton got even on an innocent-looking play. Hall walked the puck out of the corner but lost it off his stick. Nugent-Hopkins picked it up and, with his back to the net, slid a backhander that trickled through Smith at 18:50 for his 11th goal.

Edmonton looked much sharper at the start of the second period. On the first shift, Hall found Perron behind Phoenix defenseman Connor Murphy and put a 100-foot pass right on his tape. Perron beat Smith cleanly with a wrist shot to the stick side for his 17th goal of the season and fourth in three games against the Coyotes.

Hall got his third point at 6:44 when he curled inside the Phoenix blue line and hit Schultz in the slot for a shot that beat Smith between the pads for his fourth goal -- and the Oilers had the Coyotes on their heels.

Smith, who had been 7-0-1 against the Oilers since coming to the Coyotes, was pulled for Greiss.

"The first period wasn't great at all but we managed to find our game and get the lead," Hall said. "Our line is playing well, We were in their end a lot. We did a lot of good things but it's all for nothing."

The Coyotes got within 3-2 at 12:05 when Bryzgalov came off the left post just enough for Tim Kennedy's shot from beyond to goal line to bank off his skate and squeeze inside the left post.

It stayed that way until the Coyotes pulled Greiss and scored with a sixth attacker for the second straight game. Boedker pushed the puck to Yandle, who carried the puck to the goal line before passing back to Boedker, who hit an open net for his 11th goal, matching his career high.

{allcanada} Flyers wrap up 2013 by dousing Flames

Chemistry.com Chemistry.com

CALGARY -- The Philadelphia Flyers might be sorry to see the calendar flip from 2013 to 2014.

The Flyers closed out the month of December -- and their year -- with their fourth straight victory by beating the Calgary Flames 4-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday.

"It's a good stretch," goaltender Ray Emery said. "It's a good way to end the calendar year, especially after the way we started the season. To be where we're at starting the New Year, I think we'll take it."

Emery stopped 23 shots and Brayden Schenn had a goal and two assists as the Flyers closed 2013 by completing a three-game sweep through Western Canada for the first time since 1996 on the first half of a six-game trip.

"A couple big efforts," said Emery, whose Flyers are 7-1-1-1 in their past 10 New Year's Eve games. "Coming back in Edmonton and shootout wins, [Steve] Mason has a great one in Vancouver and then back-to-back against these guys, it's a tough place to come into. It's a great way to end the year off."

The Flames are 0-3-0 since the Christmas break despite giving up just eight goals -- mostly because they've scored only once in that span. It's a point of concern for captain Mark Giordano.

"I think we're playing well but we're not scoring goals and we have to find a way just to get some," Giordano said. "All of us, myself included, we're not finishing. We're getting some pretty good looks and it's not going in for whatever reason."

It did for Schenn, who broke a 1-1 tie with just 1:29 remaining in the second period. After Andrej Meszaros whiffed on his point shot, Schenn corralled the loose puck and blasted a shot past the blocker of Reto Berra for the eventual game-winner, his ninth of the season and second in as many games after going scoreless in 16 straight.

"I guess that happens to most guys," Schenn said. "They go through slumps and they get a little shot of confidence. Tonight, as a line, as a team, as a whole we worked hard and at times there we were obviously playing in our own end a bit, but that's two games in two nights. It was good to come out on top."

Schenn's goal came after Sean Monahan tied the game 1-1 at 14:30. It was Calgary's first goal in 159:35 after being shut out in back-to-back games on home ice after the Christmas break.

Paul Byron knocked down Vincent Lecavalier's neutral zone pass and sprung Monahan in 2-on-1 with Lee Stempniak. Monahan ripped a shot over Emery's glove for his 11th of the season and first in seven games to pull Calgary even.

"Putting the puck in the net gives you confidence and it's big for me to put the puck in the net, and that helps the team, but at the end of the day I want to win games," Monahan said.

Scott Hartnell gave the Flyers some breathing room at the midway mark of the third, deflecting Luke Schenn's point shot behind Berra to make it 3-1. Braydon Coburn slung the puck the length of the ice into an empty net with 1:56 remaining for a shorthanded goal after Sean Couturier won a faceoff in his own zone to finish the Flames.

The Flyers, riding the momentum of back-to-back shootout wins in Edmonton and Vancouver to start their six-game road trip, struck early. Mark Streit opened the scoring for a second straight game, firing a seeing-eye wrist shot through a screen in front that beat an unsuspecting Berra at 3:15 to put Philadelphia up 1-0.

He thought he had another near the midway mark of the period. On a seemingly identical play, Streit fired through traffic in front and beat Berra but struck the post. Schenn did sneak another over the goal line, but it was waived off after Hartnell impeded Berra in the crease.

The Flames didn't give Berra any support after 20 minutes, extending their scoring drought to seven periods plus a five-minute overtime. But it wasn't from a lack of chances.

Monahan knocked a blocked shot out of midair and launched it on the Flyers goaltender six minutes in, but Emery managed to get his body in front of it. He did the same on Mike Cammalleri's deflection with 5:19 remaining. At 19:52, he trapped David Jones' snap shot off the rush to temporarily extend Calgary's scoring woes.

The first wasn't all good news for the Flyers, though; they lost Matt Read after just seven shifts with an upper-body injury. The team didn't have an update on Read's status after the game.

{allcanada} Toronto could host Winter Classic in 2017

Chemistry.com Chemistry.com

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A complicated and costly deal is in the works that would see Toronto's BMO Field significantly expanded in time for the Maple Leafs to host the Winter Classic in their centennial season, Sportsnet has learned.

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment has held high-level discussions with the municipal, provincial and federal government and believes that they are all on board with renovating the six-year-old stadium, according to president and CEO Tim Leiweke. The driving force behind the proposed expansion is a desire to hold major events like the Winter Classic and NHL sources indicate that Toronto is in line to land the signature outdoor game should the building's capacity be increased.

Leiweke insists that won't be an issue if the league is committed to bringing the game to a Canadian city for the first time ever – likely in concert with the Maple Leafs' 100th anniversary season in 2016-17.

"I think if the league liked that idea we can 100 per cent get a deal done with the various government agencies and then do the renovation so we'd be ready," Leiweke said in an exclusive interview on Tuesday. "A lot of it will be what the league wants. If they came to us and said `We want to shoot for that, we'd be ready for that."'

The biggest issue to be worked out for the project is determining how it is financed. BMO Field was built in 2007 for a little more than $60-million and Leiweke acknowledged that the cost of expanding it would likely end up being at least twice that much.

"It's big money, huge money," he said.

The building is owned by the City of Toronto and Leiweke indicated that all three levels of government would likely kick in for the upgrade. The current capacity is about 22,000 for soccer and it would need to be almost doubled to make it feasible to hold a Winter Classic.

Even though Wednesday's outdoor game between the Leafs and Detroit Red Wings is expected to draw more than 105,000 fans to the Big House, previous versions of the event at Boston's Fenway Park, Chicago's Wrigley Field and Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park were all in the 40,000-seat range. In Leiweke's mind, an expanded BMO Field could also be used to attract a number of big events including the Grey Cup and MLS all-star game, among other things.

"It fits a lot of needs," he said. "It renovates it for TFC, it certainly renovates it for the Pan Am Games, it renovates it for rugby. The Grey Cup would be phenomenal in an outdoor setting in Toronto on the lake, but (the Winter Classic is) clearly one of the things we put on the wishlist.

"The city, the province and the feds have all told us it's important to them from an economic stimulus standpoint because we see what it's doing to the economy in Detroit now – imagine what would happen in Toronto."

The NHL seems to have established a pattern of having visiting teams in the Winter Classic eventually serve as host of the game. That isn't likely to change even though the Leafs will become the first Canadian team to even participate on Wednesday.

John Collins, the NHL's chief operating officer, is enthusiastic about the possibility of bringing the event to Toronto.

"I think it would be great," Collins told Sportsnet. "Frankly, I think the commissioner's vision has been that the league's centennial and the Toronto Maple Leafs centennial would be a good time to do something like this if they had a venue that would be appropriate."

The Leafs are actually vying for all of the league's major events. They are hoping to host the draft, all-star game and Winter Classic at some point during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

However, the expansion of BMO Field seems to be at the heart of the entire plan. The hope is that the stadium would be built up with more permanent seating while also leaving some room for temporary seating that could be brought in for major events in addition to that.

The NHL and MLSE have held a number of discussions recently and are likely to formalize a plan after Wednesday's game at the University of Michigan.

"This is their game and we'd be honoured to host it," said Leiweke. "I think at the end of the day we've got to follow their lead. What we're doing now is working hard and trying to figure out what kind of capacity they want and when best to do it.

"Look, there's other things we want to host – we'd like all-star games and drafts to be part of the bigger picture. There's an awful lot going on between us and the league."

What exactly a Winter Classic would look like in Toronto remains to be seen.

Leiweke hinted that the Leafs are hoping to expand the event to include even more ancillary activities than there are already. He believes that everything from the number of hotel rooms in the city to the various transportation options to the open space around the stadium make it an ideal location.

"It's not iconic like Fenway and it's not iconic like Wrigley, but on the other side of it is there a more important place to play the game than Toronto?" said Leiweke. "I think if we can find a way from a location standpoint a way to host a Winter Classic where it's right in downtown, right connected to where all the other events are going to be (it would be special).

"You have the ability of not only integrating but also doing a massive public celebration right there in Ontario Place or Exhibition Place and then I think you're dealing with an even bigger Winter Classic than anything they've ever had."

The only thing that seems to stand between seeing that dream become a reality is getting BMO Field expanded in a timely fashion. However, the MLSE boss sounded motivated by the NHL's clear interest in bringing the Winter Classic north of the border.

"We know what we've got to do and we've seen some designs already that would work," said Leiweke. "We have a pretty good idea how to take the capacity and get it to one level for permanent and expand it for things like this.

"We have a path – now we're just trying to figure it out."

{allcanada} VALANCIUNAS HAS 15 POINTS TO LEAD RAPTORS TO WIN OVER BULLS

Chemistry.com Chemistry.com

Days of Our Lives 2013

CHICAGO -- Jonas Valanciunas scored 15 points and the Toronto Raptors mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Chicago Bulls 85-79 on Tuesday night.

He made two big free throws to seal the game in the final minute after Toronto had missed three of four from the line down the stretch.

Greivis Vasquez hit a 3-pointer two minutes into the fourth to give Toronto (14-15) its first lead of the second half, and the Raptors didn't look back. Vasquez scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter, and also had two assists and a blocked shot in the final quarter as Toronto overcame the tenacious Bulls defence.

Luol Deng led Chicago (12-18) with 16 points in his return to the court after missing five games due to a sore left Achilles tendon.

Toronto shot 37 per cent through the first three quarters, but turned it up in the fourth making 10 of its 17 shots. Meanwhile, the Bulls went 4-for-24 from the field in the fourth quarter, falling to 1-6 at the United Center after starting the season 6-1.

Coming off of season-highs with 32 points and 11 assists Saturday against the Knicks, Kyle Lowry had a modest 12 and six against Chicago.

The 27-year-old averaged 22.4 points over his last five games coming in, including 14-for-30 from 3-point range despite dealing with trade rumours. Lowry took an early breather after being whistled for a pair of fouls within the first five minutes. He didn't score until seven minutes into the second quarter when he knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing.

He connected again from deep on the following possession.

Following his season-high 26-point performance Monday at Memphis, Jimmy Butler poured in 15 for Chicago (12-18). He completed a three-point play to pull the Bulls back within five with two minutes left, but they couldn't complete the comeback.

Carlos Boozer missed his first seven shots and didn't find the scoring column until midway through the third quarter.

Boozer, Joakim Noah and Kirk Hinrich combined to go 4-for-27 from the field.

Noah had seven points and 16 rebounds.

Taj Gibson was the only player in double-figures when Chicago took a 42-36 lead into halftime. He finished with 12 points - two in the second half. Mike Dunleavy added 13 for Chicago, which had won three of its last four.

Toronto has won two of the three meetings this season, the road team coming out on top each time.

Notes: Bulls G D.J. Augustin, who was released by the Raptors on December 9, had six points and three assists on 3-of-4 shooting. Augustin shot just 1 for 7 from the floor against his former team on Dec. 14, a 99-77 loss. . Raptors F Amir Johnson was taken out in the second quarter due to a right knee injury, but returned minutes later after going to the locker room for treatment. He finished with nine points and six rebounds.

{allcanada} Hurricanes rally for OT win vs. Canadiens

Chemistry.com Chemistry.com

Days of Our Lives 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Carolina Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin scored on a snap shot from the left faceoff circle with 1:33 remaining in overtime to cap a dramatic 5-4 comeback win against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.

The Canadiens seemed to be on their way to an easy win, leading 3-0 after two periods, but Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner scored a pair of power-play goals 37 seconds apart before setting up Eric Staal for the tying goal less than two minutes later.

Manny Malhotra scored at 8:16 to give the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead, but P.K. Subban answered two minutes later to even the score at 4-4.

The Hurricanes killed off a double minor for boarding against Staal at the end of the third period and early in overtime before Semin's game-winner.

Skinner put the Hurricanes on the board at 1:38 with a nice move in the left faceoff circle to beat Canadiens goalie Carey Price to the far post; he scored again from the right circle at 2:15.

When Staal finished on a loose puck in front at 4:07, it completed a three-goal comeback in a span of 2:29.

Until the wild third period, Montreal had controlled the game, despite killing 10:14 of Carolina power-play time through two periods.

Lars Eller's ninth goal of the season put the Canadiens on the board 1:20 into the game. Alex Galchenyuk forced a turnover behind the net then pushed a pass to Eller, who slipped the puck past Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward on the backhand.

Pacioretty made it 2-0 at 7:46 when he redirected a pass from David Desharnais from the right circle. The goal came on an abbreviated power play after the teams had skated 4-on-4 for 1:20.

Montreal didn't show much discipline in the first 20 minutes, taking four minor penalties. Price was sharp though, especially during a 37-second sequence of 5-on-3 when he stopped scoring bids by Semin and Jordan Staal.

The penalty-box traffic continued in the second period for Montreal. A bench minor for too many men on the ice quickly followed a slashing penalty by Galchenyuk, leaving Carolina with 1:45 of a two-man advantage. But Montreal was equal to the task, blocking shots and keeping the Hurricanes away from the crease.

Pacioretty's second goal of the night at 14:24 pushed the Montreal lead to 3-0.

Desharnais earned his second assist of the night by winning the faceoff, and Subban stickhandled from the left point to the goal line before laying a backhand pass to Pacioretty at the top of the crease.

Hurricanes forward Riley Nash left the game in the first period with a lower-body injury and did not return.

Carolina outshot Montreal 42-25, including by 30-12 over the final two periods.

WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Jets needed some redemption against the Buffalo Sabres, and they earned it with a 3-0 win Tuesday at MTS Centre.

The Sabres defeated the Jets 4-2 loss at Buffalo on Dec. 17, one of several losses this season against a team at or near the bottom of the NHL standings.

In the rematch, Keaton Ellerby and Jacob Trouba scored for the Jets before Anthony Peluso finished off the Sabres with an empty-net goal with 1:28 left. Goaltender Al Montoya picked up his second shutout of the season with 27 saves.

Montoya started for the second game in a row after defeating the Colorado Avalanche with 33 saves Sunday. Montoya, who is challenging Ondrej Pavelec for the Jets' No. 1 job, is a strong possibility to become the first goaltender other than Pavelec to start three consecutive games since the franchise relocated to Winnipeg for the 2011-12 season. The Jets begin a three-game road trip Thursday against the Ottawa Senators.

The win gave the Jets their first three-game win streak since a four-game run Nov. 8-15 and capped an up-and-down 7-6-1 December.

The month included road losses against the Sabres, Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers, plus a winless three-game homestand against Central Division opponents. The Jets are 5-11-3 against the Central Division but have consecutive wins against the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche.

The Sabres used the win on home ice against the Jets to put together a 3-1-1 run in five games before heading here. Their two-game road trip wraps up Thursday against Minnesota. Jhonas Enroth made 23 saves.

The Jets survived Blake Wheeler's double-minor early in the first period and several in-close offensive chances for the Sabres. The Jets built a 1-0 lead at 10:42 on Ellerby's second goal of the season, a bouncing left-point shot that skipped past Enroth.

The Sabres nearly tied the game late in the first period when Marcus Foligno jammed a loose puck past Montoya as Drew Stafford crashed into the net. The officials disallowed the goal, and video review was inconclusive in determining whether the net was dislodged before the puck crossed the goal line.

Buffalo limited the Jets to 14 shots past the game's midpoint. The Jets held a 2-0 lead by the end of the second period after Trouba scored his third goal of the season on a low shot from above the right circle blocker-side past Enroth at 13:06.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock asked his players to keep their New Year's Eve revelry on pause out of respect for the 1 p.m. ET start of Wednesday's Winter Classic.

"They know there's an opportunity in our schedule for you to have a heck of a New Year's Eve Party on New Year's Day," Babcock said.

With snowfall expected, the game between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium should be the most enchanting, picturesque spectacle in NHL history.

"All of these games have been phenomenal, and this one is going to be phenomenal on a scale no one has ever seen before," said NHL chief operating officer John Collins.

Counting 105,500 tickets sold and others in the building, NHL officials are hoping for an official attendance of about 107,000. That would be a world record for hockey attendance, breaking the old mark of 104,173 set at the college game between Michigan State and Michigan at the Big House on Dec. 11, 2010.

"I got chills walking out with maybe 150 people (in the stands), so I'm sure when the building is full, it's going to be an unbelievable experience," said Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf.

The record for an NHL game is 71,217, set at the first Winter Classic game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.

According to weather.com, there's an 80% chance of snow with accumulation of one to three inches. Winds are going to be blowing 10 to 20 mph and game-time temperature will be 16.

"You notice it," Maple Leafs star Phil Kessel said after Tuesday's practice. "When the wind's blowing and you're skating into the wind, it's chilly ... There's definitely a pushback."

Babcock isn't concerned.

"I thought the snow was great today," he said. "It adds to the atmosphere. It adds to the memory. It's going to be the same for both teams."

Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said the ice quality is good. "But the puck does slide differently outdoors," he said. "That is something we will have to get used to."

Detroit winger Daniel Alfredsson (back spasms) didn't play Monday night and is day-to-day.

"I said to Alfie, you're not 20," Babcock said. "You play in tomorrow's game if you're ready for tomorrow's game. You don't play in tomorrow's game because it's an opportunity of a lifetime. That makes no sense to me. We're about winning."

Luke Glendening, who has shuttled between the American Hockey League and NHL, will play for the Red Wings, two days after he played outdoors for the AHL Grand Rapids (Mich.) Griffins outside at Comerica Park.

The Michigan native said he'll try to block out the enormity of the event. "But you can't when there is 110,000 screaming people," he said.

Babcock is enthralled to be playing in Michigan Stadium.

"If you haven't been to a football game Saturday here, then you should put it on your bucket list," he said.

He said a Michigan football game is the best sporting event he has ever attended.

"Can it transfer to hockey?" Babcock said. "I assume it can."
