{allcanada} Justin Bieber Poses With Fake Gun, Sparks Real Controversy

Justin Bieber, Twit Pic Twitter

Justin Bieber's hindsight is probably 20/20 on this one.

In a photo taken by an actor on the set of Selena Gomez's upcoming flick Feed the Dog, the Biebs was snapped posing with a fake gun and pointing it at the actor's dad.

And Gomez was right there for the photo op, smiling in the pic.

After the photos were posted to the Twitter account @HechosSMGomez, the "Girlfriend" crooner received a slew of criticism for the gun pose-off, with folks around the web saying the snaps were "irresponsible," among other things, in light of the recent mass shootings at the Empire State Building and the Dark Knight Rises screening in Colorado.

"Guns are on everyone's mind as a serious crisis in Canada and the United States. Everyone, that is, except maybe Justin Bieber," a writer from Canada's Globe and Mail wrote.

"Justin, whether you like it or not, you're a role model. And millions of fans, 27 million on Twitter, are following your every move. You have power in this industry, and holding a gun in jest is just plain foolish," a writer at Hollywood Life declared.

Reps for Bieber have not yet responded to requests for comment.

So, tell us…what do you think? Was Bieber just having fun? Or did his gun-posing pics go too far?

{allcanada} TORONTO FC LOOKS FOR REDEMPTION AGAINST SPORTING KANSAS CITY

Without leaving our galaxy, get 15% off Star Trek gear. Use code LIVELONG to prosper.

TORONTO -- Two weeks after a devastating loss to Sporting Kansas City, the memories were still painful for Toronto FC.

Kansas City won 1-0 on a Kei Kamara free kick in the 83rd minute that was deflected at the wall before going in off the fingers of goalkeeper Milos Kocic.

"The last Kansas game left a sour taste in our mouth," said Canadian international midfielder Terry Dunfield. "For sure, I think that was a nil-niller all day. Someone leaves the wall and all of a sudden they score on a deflected free kick and you get beat 1-0 at home. That was tough to swallow."

The Reds (5-15-6) will have a chance at redemption on Saturday at Livestrong Sporting Park when they play Kansas City for the third time in this Major League Soccer season. Kansas City won 2-0 at home on June 16 in TFC's first match under Paul Mariner after he took over as head coach from Aron Winter.

Kansas City (14-7-5) will be without speedy forward Teal Bunbury who had season-ending knee surgery and defender Aurelien Collin who is suspended for the game.

"They've got massive depth," TFC defender Richard Eckersley said. "Whoever steps in is going to be a threat. We're not going to have a day off by any means. We've just got to be on our game and on our front foot constantly."

Toronto forward Eric Hassli has a rib injury and won't play Saturday. The injury forced him from the 3-1 loss to Santos Laguna of Mexico in a CONCACAF Champions League match at BMO Field on Tuesday.

That was another disappointing result for Toronto. The Reds had tied the game in the 68th minute on a goal by Quincy Amarikwa and they felt they played well enough for a draw. But a familiar theme for their season played out when Santos scored in the 90th and 92nd minutes.

"Over the past month we've been getting real close without getting past the finish line, seeing the games off," Dunfield said. "I think 1-1 was probably a fair result the other night. I don't think it was a 3-1 game.

"I think it's lots of little mistakes that are leading to goals right now. We're making poor decisions, especially when it counts in the last five minutes. In general we're making naive mistakes maybe. Mistakes that shouldn't be made when you've put in 85 minutes of hard work). It seems like we can't get away with anything, we really are being punished."

Dunfield feels there have been positives.

"We're keeping the ball better now, we're creating chances and I always feel we've got a goal in us," he said.

Toronto worked on ironing out the kinks during Thursday's session at Downsview Park.

"Possession, out of possession, in possession," Mariner said. "Determination to get it back. Tempo. If in doubt get it out, it's such an old adage.

"When you watch Brazil, Argentina, Barcelona, all the great teams, all the highlight reels show the attacking play. You never see them when they're under real pressure, they just put it up the field. There's no shame in that, it's just a way of winning football matches or keeping yourself in football matches."

Notes: Dunfield and defender Ashtone Morgan have will play for Canada in World Cup qualifying matches against Panama Sept. 7-11. ...After Saturday's game, centre back Darren O'Day will join the Republic of Ireland for a World Cup qualifier at Kazakhstan on Sept. 7 but will be miss Ireland's next game, a friendly, so that he can play in Toronto's game against Chicago at BMO Field on Sept. 12. ... Hassli picked up the rib injury in the 2-1 loss at Columbus on Aug. 22. He also had back spasms, which cleared up but the rib injury persisted. ....TFC defender Jeremy Hall was at Rogers Centre Thursday to renew acquaintances with Tampa Bay Rays' bench coach Dave Martinez. Hall, who is from Tampa, played soccer and baseball with Martinez's son Josh. ...TFC had a short workout Friday before departing for Kansas City.

{allcanada} WHITECAPS SET TO TAKE ON GALAXY IN LOS ANGELES ON TSN2

Without leaving our galaxy, get 15% off Star Trek gear. Use code LIVELONG to prosper.

BURNABY, B.C. -- After months of waiting, it looks like Russell Teibert will finally get a chance to start for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Watch the game live, Saturday on TSN2 and TSN Mobile TV at 10pm et/7pm pt.

The 19-year-old Niagara Falls, Ont., native is expected to make his first start of the season Saturday in a key road game against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"I've been looking forward to it all year," said Teibert, who played left wing with expected starters Friday in practice. "I'm very excited to get the chance to get back on the field."

The struggling Whitecaps (10-10-7) have lost three straight and are winless in their past five road contests. With a victory, the Caps can move into a tie with fourth-place L.A. (12-11-4) and further secure their hopes of grabbing one of just five available Western Conference playoff berths.

Teibert's insertion is one of many expected Vancouver lineup changes as a result of injuries, suspension, and coach Martin Rennie's desire to rest players during the stretch drive of the regular season. The most notable absentee will be top scorer Darren Mattocks, who is serving a one-game suspension for a high elbow that resulted in a red card in last weekend's 2-1 loss away to the Portland Timbers.

Teibert, an emerging player in Canada's national senior men's program, rose up to MLS through the Whitecaps' residency program after beginning in Toronto FC's youth system. He started Vancouver's first-ever MLS game in March 2011, earning an assist in a 4-2 victory over Toronto.

He made five starts as a rookie, but has not done so since June 2011. His sit-down coincided with the firing of former coach Teitur Thordarson two days after the same game.

So much time has elapsed that Teibert, who was sidelined for part of 2011 with a toe injury, could not remember his last start. This season, he has logged only 20 minutes while appearing in two games.

"It's been a challenging season," said Teibert. "It's time for me to grow as a player and an an individual and progress."

Growth has been evident in recent weeks. Teibert has dressed for more games and seen action as a substitute lately.

"He's starting to contribute for us," said Rennie. "He's doing well in training, he's done well in the games where he's come on, so he's getting closer and closer now, which is good for everyone."

He also played a prominent role for Canada's under-23 team in its Olympic qualifying attempt, and was called up to the senior men's side for the first time for a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago.

"He brings a lot of energy," said Rennie. "He gets up and down the field. He's the fittest player that I think I've worked with. He can run all day, and I think that's a good attribute for any player to have.

"But he's also got good quality. He's a good passer of the ball, he can go past people one-(on)-one, he's got good pace, so I think he's going to be a good player."

One of Teibert's key roles Saturday will be to feed the ball to Kenny Miller, who will start at striker in place of Mattocks. The 32-year-old captain of Scotland's national team is starting to feel more comfortable with the Caps after first suiting up for them in July.

"It's getting better, obviously," said Miller. "I've been disappointed in the last three results. ... We're still in a strong position to finish off the season strongly and make the playoffs, and then after that anything can happen."

Meanwhile, Rennie said John Thorrington, usually a midfielder, will start at right back in place of Young-Pyo Lee, who is being rested after playing every minute of Vancouver's MLS games thus far.

"I think he can do well there," said Rennie. "I think he's got all the attributes to actually be a really good right back. He's a good defender, he's good one-(on)-one, he's very athletic. He's also good getting forward."

Other changes are anticipated on Vancouver's back line as Andy O'Brien deals with a groin injury and Alain Rochat battles fatigue. Rennie was also contemplating a change in goal to Brad Knighton from Joe Cannon after the starter let a shot go through his hands in Portland.

Captain Jay DeMerit hopes Teibert and the other additions can provide an infusion of energy and desire. DeMerit said the Caps have simply not played well lately.

"It's opportunities like this that can change people's careers and change people's jobs," said DeMerit. "And, I think that hunger and that competitiveness is something that we need more of here."

Notes: This is the third and final regular-season meeting between the teams. L.A. took the first game and overturned a 2-0 deficit to forge a 2-2 tie in the second. ... Galaxy stiker Landon Donovan is expected to miss the game with a hamstring injury. ... Whitecaps winger Omar Salgado, recovering from a broken foot, has resumed training on his own and hopes to get back to action with the reserve squad Sept. 10.

{allcanada} IMPACT, CREW, MEET IN MATCHUP WITH PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS

Without leaving our galaxy, get 15% off Star Trek gear. Use code LIVELONG to prosper.

MONTREAL -- Two of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer will battle for playoff positioning when the Montreal Impact visit the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

The two clubs are tied in the Eastern Conference standings with 39 points apiece and are just two points shy of fourth-place D.C. United and fifth-place Chicago.

The Impact (12-13-3) enter the match on a five-game winning streak, extended last week with a 3-0 victory over D.C. United. Four of those have come in the cozy confines of Saputo Stadium, where Montreal has recorded 10 of its wins.

On the road, however, success has been much harder to come by for the MLS expansion club. In 13 games on opposing pitches, the Impact is just 2-10-1. Still, the team doesn't expect its game plan to differ from what's worked for them at home.

"I don't know if we're going to want to change too much about the way we've been doing things the past month or so. We've had some good results," Impact captain Davy Arnaud said. "Obviously a lot of our wins lately have come at home but we also won a big game on the road last time out against New England. That game is a good model for us in terms of how we want to approach the game."

The Impact, who haven't lost an MLS game since July 21, have outscored their opponents 12-3 during their current run while recording three shutouts.

"Our team's in a place where we feel confident going on the road and getting results," said Impact coach Jesse Marsch. "But we also want to be smart about our overall approach and make sure that we're ready to be organized and disciplined, knowing that if we defensively take care of things that in every game we still manage to find our chances."

Midfielder Patrice Bernier factored into every Impact goal against D.C., scoring twice and assisting on Marco Di Vaio's third of the season. With his pair, Bernier became the first Impact player this season to score twice in one game.

With the season's stretch run in full swing, the Crew (11-8-6) have enjoyed a successful run of their own. The club won its third straight on Wednesday when midfielder Eddie Gaven's stoppage-time goal delivered a 2-1 triumph over Philadelphia. It marked the first time since May 8-23, 2010 (four straight) that the Columbus has won three in a row.

With the win, the Columbus tied the Impact in points and extended its unbeaten streak to five games. It's part of a run that has seen the club go 6-1-2 since July 21.

Like D.C. a week ago, Columbus enters the match in the midst of a busy schedule. Saturday's game will be its fourth in 10 days.

"They've got to figure out how they're going to manage minutes," Marsch said. "We've been there so it's not like we feel sorry for these teams. We have to be prepared for different players and what it might look like and address that but, again, make sure that we have ourselves ready."

The Impact will be facing a Columbus squad that has been strong on its own pitch. The Crew is 7-3-2 at Crew Stadium and has not lost in six straight home matches.

Montreal and Columbus have split the two previous meetings, with each side winning at home.

{allcanada} SIERRA USES BAT, ARM TO LEAD BLUE JAYS OVER RAYS

Without leaving our galaxy, get 15% off Star Trek gear. Use code LIVELONG to prosper.

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays had their outfielders put in some extra time before the game to work on throwing. The results paid off in a big way.

Right-fielder Moises Sierra gunned down the potential tying run to end the game as Toronto won its second straight over the Tampa Bay Rays with a 2-1 victory on Friday night.

In the second inning left-fielder Rajai Davis threw out a runner at home as well, as the Jays won three in a row for the first time since July 26-28..

"It was really awesome how the day shaped up," said catcher Jeff Mathis, who blocked the plate expertly both times.

"Because before the game they were out there working on their throws, every outfielder, and tonight we gun two guys down at the plate. Two good throws by both of those guys saved the game for us."

Sierra hit his third home run since being called up from triple-A Las Vegas last month, while Edwin Encarnacion also homered as Toronto made the most of four hits against Tampa Bay right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.

Brandon Morrow pitched 6 2/3 innings to pick up his first win since June 6, when he shutout the Chicago White Sox. He was making his second start since coming off the disabled list last Saturday and allowed eight hits with the only run coming on a homer by Desmond Jennings.

The struggling Rays (71-61) have lost six of their past seven games.

Casey Janssen pitched the ninth to pick up his 19th save despite giving up two hits.

The game-ending play came when pinch-runner Elliot Johnson tried to score from second on a single to right by pinch-hitter Carlos Pena.

Sierra fielded the ball and fired home to Mathis who blocked the plate and Johnson was out to end the game.

"Jeff makes an incredible block on a bang-bang play," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said.

First base coach Torey Lovullo, who works with the outfielders, had them out before a game working on throws.

He says the raw talent is there with Sierra. It's just a matter of refining it.

"It was just fine-tuning," Lovullo said. "He was just probably trying to throw the ball too hard and too aggressively. It's been a work in progress for the last couple of weeks and we've seen glimpse of it, but all came together in one great moment."

Mathis, who absorbed a crushing charge from Johnson, says he's never been involved in a play like that that ended a game.

"It doesn't hurt as bad when you come out a winner," Mathis said. "I was just trying to do anything I could to get in front of the plate.

"I saw where Mo's throw was going to be and it was perfect so it allowed me to get my body in a position to block the plate."

Even Pena was impressed with Sierra's throw.

"That was an unbelievable throw," Pena said. "He had to jump to get that hop on a bounce and then set and throw. I was very surprised when he threw him out. I knew it was going to be close so I just kept going to second, trying to draw a throw."

Another key play from the outfield came in the second inning when Davis threw out Matt Joyce at the plate to keep the Rays off the board for the 11 consecutive innings in the series.

Jennings led off the third with his 11th homer of the season and the seventh of his career against the Blue Jays. B.J. Upton followed with a single but Morrow retired the next three hitters.

Hellickson retired his first six hitters of the game, but Sierra led off the third with a home run. Encarnacion hit his 35th of the season with one out in the fourth to put Toronto into a 2-1 lead.

Morrow did his best to hold the lead. Roberts hit a two-out double in the fourth but Jose Molina fouled out.

Keppinger hit a two-out double in the sixth when Davis made an ill-advised dive instead of keeping the ball in front of him for a single. But Scott struck out.

The Rays had another two-out double in the seventh by Jennings and that was Morrow's final batter. Steve Delabar took over to retire Upton on a grounder to second and then struck out the side in the eighth.

"I felt good the whole way," Morrow said. "After the first couple of innings my pitch count was climbing and I settled in and was locating better with the off-speed stuff and staying ahead of guys and that carried me through."

Morrow injured his left oblique muscle nine pitches into his start against the Washington Nationals on June 11.

Notes: Attendance at Rogers Centre was 20,158. ... The Rays obtained outfielder Ben Francisco for a player to be named from Houston in a trade announced during Friday's game. ...When the Blue Jays defeated the Rays 2-0 on Thursday it was their second consecutive win, the first time they had won back-to-back games since Aug. 12-13. ...Morrow's three shutouts are second in the majors to Seattle's Felix Hernandez who has four. ....Right-hander Henderson Alvarez (7-11, 4.97 earned-run average) will start Saturday for Toronto against right-hander Jeff Niemann (2-3, 3.38 ERA)....Niemann will make his first start since he suffered a fractured right fibula on May 14 at Rogers Centre when he was struck by a liner from Adam Lind.

{allcanada} CALVILLO AND WHITAKER LEAD ALOUETTES PAST LIONS IN THRILLER

Without leaving our galaxy, get 15% off Star Trek gear. Use code LIVELONG to prosper.

MONTREAL -- Another career milestone for Anthony Calvillo helped Montreal emerge victorious in a game between the CFL's two best teams.

Calvillo threw over 300 yards for a league-record eighth straight game and Brandon Whitaker had three touchdowns as the Alouettes held on to defeat the B.C. Lions 30-25 on Friday night.

The 40-year-old Calvillo completed 19 of 31 passes for 321 yards to break the record he shared with Doug Flutie.

"That's pretty cool to just say that there's only one on top," Calvillo said. "At the end of the day, it's something that I'm always going to reflect on but it's just fun to get this huge victory."

Whitaker put the Alouettes ahead for good on a two-yard run at 3:57 of the fourth quarter after catching a pair of touchdown passes from Calvillo earlier in the game.

"B.C.'s got a great defensive line and I've got the best offensive line in the game, so it was a battle and we got just enough yards to get where we needed to go," Whitaker said. "As long as we got a W on our record, that's all that matters."

Montreal's Billy Parker batted down B.C. quarterback Travis Lulay's third-down pass attempt from the 10-yard line as time expired in the final quarter.

"We've had two or three games like that, that come down to the end of the game," Whitaker said. "It's stressful, but that's the CFL for you. And when you've got two good teams playing against each other, that's what you should expect."

Montreal won its fourth in a row to improve to 6-3, first in the East Division. The Lions, who lead the West at 6-3, ended a four-game winning streak.

B.C. will host the Alouettes next Saturday at BC Place.

"Any time you lose to a team you always want to get right back out on the field and redeem yourself," Lulay said. "You don't often get that opportunity and we do this week. So that's how we have to view it, as an opportunity to go home and get right back in the saddle and find a way to overcome the play that we didn't make tonight."

Arland Bruce III caught his second touchdown pass of the game to put the Lions up 25-24 at 6:28 of the fourth quarter.

Lulay found Bruce alone in the back of the end zone for a seven-yard strike to cap a 56-yard drive that gave B.C. its first lead of the game.

"You know it's going to be a hard-fought game and you almost expect it to come down to the wire like that," Lulay said. "I think it was a great job by us. We were down at half-time and we came back to take the lead and make it a new football game. You've got to believe that if you get three chances inside the 10-yard line you've got to find a way to get that done, and that's not to discredit them. That's just what you have to believe as an offence."

Lulay finished the game with 275 yards passing and two TDs. His first touchdown pass to Bruce late in the first quarter extended his streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass to 20.

"Any time you do something like that, obviously you're not doing that by yourself," Lulay said. "That's a reflection of some pretty consistent offence over a period of time, being able to score at least one touchdown in every game, let alone it being a passing touchdown.

"So that is a positive sign but we're fighting to win football games. It's not like we're trying to keep the streak alive. That's a streak that is kind of a byproduct of just trying to put points on the board."

Victor Anderson scored on a five-yard run late in the third quarter for Montreal.

Lions slotback Geroy Simon left the game with a hamstring injury. He did not return for the second half.

The reigning Grey Cup champions stomped Montreal 43-1 in the last meeting between the two teams. The Lions sacked Calvillo four times in the lopsided Oct. 29 contest in Vancouver.

B.C.'s Paul McCallum kicked three field goals on Friday, including a pair in the third quarter to draw the Lions even at 17-17.

Calvillo completed four passes in a row to account for all 75 yards on the Alouettes' opening scoring drive. S.J. Green helped rack up 50 of those yards when he caught Calvillo's short pass and broke downfield. Calvillo and Whitaker connected on a 12-yard passing play for the opening touchdown 2:16 in.

Bruce scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass to tie it at 7 late in the first quarter. It was Lulay's 20th consecutive game with a touchdown pass.

Whitaker's second touchdown reception of the game 10:10 into the second quarter was his fifth as a receiver this season.

NOTES: Lions general manager Wally Buono joined three of his former Alouettes teammates during a pre-game ceremony honouring Montreal's 1977 Grey Cup champions. Gordon Judges, Glen Weir and Gabriel Gregoire were also on hand wearing throwback Alouettes jerseys.

{allcanada} Ex-Lion Boden jailed 1-year for sex crimes

VANCOUVER -- A former BC Lion convicted of sex crimes at Vancouver SkyTrain stations will spend another six months behind bars.

Josh Boden has been sentenced to a year in jail, but has already spent six-months in custody, which will count as time served.

The former CFL wide receiver was convicted in December of two counts of sexual assault and one count each of obstruction of justice and assault on a police officer dating back to 2009.

Crown lawyer Michaela Donnelly said it took four officers, one civilian and a police dog to subdue Boden during his arrest after one of the sexual assaults.

After his release, Boden will be placed on probation for three years.

Friday brought the arrival of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds to Italy's Queen of the Adriatic, as the couple showed up at the 2012 Venice Film Festival.

Local reports said they made a low-key arrival in an SUV before boarding a boat to wend their way through the city on the water.

Last week, the duo, whose one-year anniversary together is coming up, got an early start on the Gossip Girl's 25th birthday with a sweet celebration at Manhattan's Serendipity 3 restaurant.

Prior to that, they were spotted at the gym together.
