Toronto FC is closing on a deal to sign Norwich City striker Josh Sargent on a fee in the region of $22 million for one of the expensive transfers in Major League Soccer history, The Athletic's Tom Bogert reports.

The move would end months of speculation around Sargent's future.

Bogert reported last month that the United States forward had a heated exchange with manager Philippe Clement and sporting director Ben Knapper amid the St. Louis native's push to join TFC that resulted in the conclusion thathe'd "played his last game for the club."

Sargent, 25, had already been demoted from the first team after failing to make himself available for an FA Cup match with Walsall earlier this month. Bogert notes that Sargent has been clear in his desire to move to TFC after the recent birth of his third child. While there has been interest in the player from both Premier League teams and teams across Europe, Sargent reportedly only had eyes for Toronto.

There were multiple reports in January that TFC made an $18 million bid for Sargent that was rejected by Norwich. The two teams remain in contact.

Prior to the demotion, Sargent notched seven goals in 22 Championship games this season. He has 53 goals in 146 league appearances for the Canaries across five seasons. Sargent is a product of the Werder Bremen academy and made his senior debut for the side in 2018.

Internationally, Sargent has made 29 appearances for the USMNT, scoring five goals. He was a member of the squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
