Promise David will have surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his hip on Friday, but the Canadian striker is not ruling himself out of the World Cup, sources tell TSN.
David suffered the injury last weekend in the second half of Union Saint-Gilloise's 2-1 win over Royal Antwerp. David collided awkwardly in the penalty box with an Antwerp player and was stretchered off the field.
Following surgery, David's rehabilitation is expected to take three to five months.
Canada's opening game of the World Cup is 107 days away on June 12. Before that, the team is expected to begin its pre-tournament training camp in mid-May with pre-tournament friendlies against Uzbekistan in Edmonton on June 1 and in Montreal against Ireland on June 5.
Those close to David say the 24-year-old now is completely focused on his rehabilitation and getting back in time for the World Cup.
Anyone who has been around the men's national team knows of David's determined journey through Croatia, Malta, and Estonia as he pursued his professional career, as well as the Brampton, Ont.'s native's dream of playing at the 2026 World Cup.While playing in Estonia a few years ago, David wrote "2026" inside his locker.
Regardless of his drive to return, this is still a big setback for a player who was making a strong a case this season to be Jonathan David's starting strike partner for Canada.
David is tied for second in the Belgian League scoring with nine goals, and had scored 15 goals in 37 matches across all competitions. David's efforts have helped Union Saint-Gilloise stay atop the table in Belgium as they look to repeat as league champions, and his goals have also helped USG advance to May's Belgium Cup.
In two seasons in Belgium, David has 39 goals in 78 appearances. His imposing 6-foot-5 frame and instinctive scoring touch made many think he might be a goal-poaching substitute for Canada from June's tournament.
However, David has worked with USG to increase his playing time, and before the weekend, he was regularly finishing full 90-minute matches in a bid to convince Marsch he could start for Canada at the World Cup.
Attention now turns to which forwards Marsch might select for Canada's March camp.
If David's World Cup is in jeopardy, it would turn attention to Canada's other attacking options, specifically Theo Bair, Daniel Jebbison, Cyle Larin, and Tani Oluwaseyi, as well as newest attacking recruit Marcelo Flores.
