[SurroundSound] Re: EoH New Shares

So after all it's a question of personal taste and gear !?
A few comments :
- it's strange you say you don't hear anything (?) from the right front because the Fl and Fr is the original stereo
- judging a complete album by only listening to track one and then quit because that song is disappointing is not quite right..... For instance Patrick Moraz's album song one has an excellent surround full of floating effects through all the speakers, but it ends on the next song.
- hearing sound from one channel in the rears instead of both : yep, a common problem in upmixes from a not equal stereo mix. Left louder than Right .... Or Right louder than left...
But those channels are equal in RMS and Peakvalues in the upmix. So actually in loudness there is no difference between Sl and Sr ! It's our ears that make the difference here !
- too loud rears ? ALL rears on my upmixes are -2 Db softer than the fronts for their RMS value. I can let you hear several retail surround where the rears are sometimes louder than the fronts. RMS from a whole song !

I fully agree with your comment and comparison about DSOTM. I also prefer a good sound field above extreme separation or discrete channels. In upmixing one of the weakest points was always distortion and artefacts. I prefer less separation above a lot of separation with bad sound.
The main reason to upmix in the first place for me is still : does it sound better than playing the original stereo on your 5.1 system ? With a setup according to the 5.1 ITU specs, the front speakers are to close to each other for good stereo ....

Luckily (or not because as upmixer with 18 years experience and more than 6000 albums done, it's still impossible to satisfy everyone) it's in the end a matter of taste. It's very rare that one of my upmixes got negative criticism because when an upmix doesn't come out good enough for my ears, I don't share it and it ends in the trashcan ๐Ÿ˜ But.... My ears and those differ from others ๐Ÿ˜

Can you shine a light on Graceland too ?
Or listen to some other upmixes I did recently to see if the problem always occurs when playing them on your system ?

Grtz and thanks for the feedback,
EoH
