Let me add the basics of my method :
-- - I make the stereo into center and stereo sides with the best routine available. I tested about 40 commercial and freeware methods to do this and took the best.
- The stereo together with the sides and center is fed into Panorama to make it into B-Format
- B-Format is decoded into 5.1 with Wiggins Ambisonics Decoder (with settings that came out best with the oscilloscope !)
- If necessary I use the best limiter available . This is sometimes necessary because of too big differences in loudness between the channels.
On some albums this gives only a good soundfield comparable with a decoding from UHJ discs. (I have about 30 of those , all from Nimbus Records and decoded all, so I know how that sounds)
On other albums it gives besides a good soundfield , also good separation. There are some excellent examples. For instance some Rolling Stones tunes where you hear clearly only two different acoustic guitars in Ls and Rs......
And on other albums both soundfield and separation are not good and....... those are going in the thrashcan ;-).

For me , and I thought that was pretty obvious from some of my remarks, it's not discrete channels, but more an Ambisonics like sound !There's one issue that i believe i've never seen spoken about when 'upmixing' is discussed, and the fact the last short sentence below makes direct mention of the way we hear, i can only gather that it plays no part in your method.Phase is an essential part of how we hear, so it doesn't matter that the RMS and Peak values are the same, if their phase is not the same, then it can't be guaranteed that the sounds will sound equal in all situations.Exactly the reason why I let my method be measured through an oscilloscope to get rid of phase difference in the Ambisonics part of my method..........
