@MWC full agreement with you but I am trying to bring out the significance of the DSP in the circuit with all DAC types. Many people do not realise that this can have a bigger impact than the DAC itself, whatever the type.
In products such as Meridian we really do no know what they are doing, as it is proprietary but they are certainly using DSP modelling to get a certain sound, so such a thing as a transparent DAC may be not be as easy to find as we think. I have a hunch that the cheaper ones are more likely to be more transparent as they have less commercial development.

However upsampling DACs seem to be popular too, and why not set one's DAC to upsample all input to DSD128 output, or as PCM 24bit/352.8kHz if that's what floats one's boat?
