It's a truly good question (one that science can be applied to).

But as it appears that some can hear *everything*, it must be nonsense.

(OK, that's an exaggeration of the 'golden ear' position...just as 'it appears no one can tell the difference between lossy and lossless' is an exaggeration of the skeptic stance.)

Cannot imagine easier or cheaper way (starting at 10 USD) to avoid encoding. Plug in, select output. Connect HDMI cable. Play.
