Just examine the ESS range and how they are now lower power, both PCM and DSD supporting and low cost. And now support 356/384 sampling. When I get back I can always get you the data sheets.

upsampling has been common in DACs for decades now (where it's been implemented as 'oversampling')

It's true, but not a reason to condemn DSD, it's part of it's design, so you can't really knock the use of filters when they were always part of the way DSD DACs work.

It's true too that both PCM & DSD DAC design has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years. The end price has come down too. I think it's great we have such a range of affordable DACs to choose from nowadays. DACs can have a signature sound that will appeal to some and not others; personally I look for a DAC that is as transparent and true to the input sound as possible. However upsampling DACs seem to be popular too, and why not set one's DAC to upsample all input to DSD128 output, or as PCM 24bit/352.8kHz if that's what floats one's boat?
