Re: [SurroundSound] Converting Multichannel files to DTS?

After that we can debate hdmi 1.4 Vs hdmi 2.1?
Or hdmi Vs Display port?

Just kiddin'....

You don't plug an HDMI cable into an S/PDIF socket.  You plug it into an HDMI socket.  Which even small laptops often have these days.  Older desktops might need a soundcard upgrade to add an HDMI port (as my ancient Dell did...I picked up a used card cheap on ebay).  And you plug the other end into an AVR, where HDMI is even more common.

HDMI passes raw DTS bitstreams as easily as did the old optical or coaxial S/PDIF connectors.  It can also pass decoded (PCM) multichannel DTS, along with all the other formats in the audio jungle.  And video too.   HDMI has been able to do all this for years now.

But what would I plug it into? I challenge you to physically plug an HDMI connector into multichannel S/Pdif chassis sockets, let alone get it to convert the datastream into S/Pdif format! LoL.

"A trained ear can spot lossy straight away [ . . . ] somehow I find myself reaching for a book, instead of just listening".

I'm very glad I don't have trained ears! It must be very frustrating for you not to be able to enjoy music via less than perfect mediums. One of my favourite cassettes is a recording I did from the radio back in early 1981 on a (mono) Binatone bedside radio/cassette/clock/alarm. It was one of John Peels sessions. I bet even MP2 would wipe the floor with it for sound quality, especially considering the degradation of the tape after the hundreds of times I've listened to it since then. But I enjoy listening to the cassette just as much now as I did back then.

The Toslink limitations don't worry me, I don't need (or want) anything over 24/96. In fact the max sample rate of my Meridian Processor is 24/96. Anything above 24/96 is just willy waving IMO. (see, for example https://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html ) for a discussion.

"Anyway I have a friend who doesn't have an SACD player, and doesn't have a (simple) way to play multichannel .flac files on his surround sound system"
Yes, DTS is so simple and straightforward. Sometimes ease of use trumps ultimate sound quality. EoH has a lot of DTS encoded music on the HUB. Just download and burn the files to CD if you need to, it works really well.

I wish one had the ability to edit posts on Google Groups . . . Doesn't help that whenever I log in Google won't recognise my computer so it emails me a code to use. If it wasn't for this group my PC would be a totally Google spyware free zone.

Ali.
