After the Senators were unable to keep Daniel Alfredsson in Ottawa for his entirety of his career, it appears they won't be making the same mistake with Chris Neil.
According to a report from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun, the Senators reached out to Neil — out of respect — to see if he wanted to be dealt to a contending team before the Mar. 2 trade deadline, but the veteran forward said no.
Neil, 35, has played his entire NHL career with the Senators and is the longest-tenured player on the club. Ottawa's sixth round pick (161st overall) from the 1998 NHL Draft has played 888 career games with the Senators, registering 106 goals, 127 assists, and a franchise-leading 2,272 penalty minutes.
Neil's contract runs through the end of the 2015-16 season, carrying a salary cap hit of $1.9 million per season.
