Evander Kane missed the Winnipeg Jets' practice to have an injury re-evaluated by team doctors, head coach Paul Maurice told reporters on Thursday.
Maurice confirmed that Kane has been playing with an unspecified injury all season, but has not made a decision on whether or not Kane will play against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday even if he's cleared.
Kane's absence Thursday added another storyline to a week already dominated by news of the 23-year-old winger.
In a surprising move, Kane was made a healthy scratch in his hometown of Vancouver against the Canucks on Tuesday night. Gary Lawless of TSN Radio 1290 and the Winnipeg Free Press initally reported that he was put in the press box due to a violation of the team's dress code policy after arriving at the rink for a meeting in a track suit instead of a proper suit.
On Thursday afternoon, TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported it was 'highly unlikely' that the dress code violation was the main reason he was scratched and that Kane was either 'pranked or tormented' by a teammate or teammates for his attire. That wasn't well received by Kane, who later in the day was not on the team bus to the rink. McKenzie added that the sense was that Kane indicated to the Jets he was injured and would not be available to play that night.
"I'm sure you've got rules in your household, and if the kids don't stick to them they've got to be disciplined," Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien said earlier in the day before McKenzie's story was posted.
When asked if he thought Kane's removal from the line-up was appropriate punishment for breaking team rules, Byfuglien referred the matter to management. "That's not our call," he explained. "That's up top. We control what goes on in this room.
"What they do over on the other end, the upper, general manager's [level] that's theirs, not ours."
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported on Twitter Thursday that while there are some medical issues to be concerned about with regards to Kane, teams are still very interested in acquiring him. "Teams are calling and (the) Jets are listening…hard," Dreger wrote.
Kane has missed two stretches this season - eight games in October with a knee injury and another five through December and January with a lower body injury.
