Season series: The Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins face each other for the first time this season. Pittsburgh swept the 2013-14 season series, outscoring the Jets 10-7.

Penguins team scope: Executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford announced Wednesday that the Penguins have re-signed goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a four-year, $23 million contract extension. The contract will have an average annual value of $5.75 million and begin at the start of the 2015-16 season. Fleury, 29, has a 7-2-0 record, 1.89 goals-against average and .931 save percentage this season. His three shutouts are tied for the NHL lead, and he has back-to-back shutouts in his past two starts for the first time in his career. Pittsburgh won 4-1 Tuesday at the Minnesota Wild. Fleury's backup, Thomas Greiss, won his first game with the Penguins, who had their shutout streak ended at 205:28. Pittsburgh had scored 18 unanswered goals, the longest such NHL streak since the 2000-01 season. Defenseman Rob Scuderi had his first two assists of the season Tuesday. Pittsburgh's overall power play (41.3 percent) and road power play (42.9 percent) lead the League. The Penguins five-game road trip continues Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Jets team scope: The Jets are on a 5-0-1 streak after a 3-1 win Tuesday against the Nashville Predators. With a stretch of nine of 11 games on the road, the Jets held an optional practice Wednesday at MTS Centre. Coach Paul Maurice said Wednesday that left wing Anthony Peluso (upper body) has been cleared to play. The Jets franchise-record shutout streak ended at 161:17 against Nashville. Opponents have scored two goals in the Jets past four games, and Winnipeg has allowed 2.00 goals per game this season after allowing 2.82 goals per game last season. Goaltender Ondrej Pavelec has a 2.01 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage, and he leads the League with 12 appearances, 11 of them starts. Winnipeg's power play scored two goals Tuesday after having scored three goals in the first 12 games of the season. After the game Thursday, the Jets begin a five-game road trip Saturday against the Ottawa Senators.
