Re: [SurroundSound] Re: Re-authoring a SACD

Oh didn't want to mean that in a demeaning way if it came across like that.  I was just curious as to why one would do that when most of the same stuff is available in some form of PCM that was converted by professional engineers.  It would seem if that possibility exists that would be the superior way to go sound quality wise.

Why would you convert SACD to PCM?  Almost every SACD out there has a high res PCM equivalent either on HDtracks or some other source.  You are taking a file likely an analog PCM tape master and letting it be converted to DSD only to convert it back to PCM.  I can see no benefit to doing so.  Can someone enlighten me a bit?  Here's a good question.  I have a 24/44 of norah jones latest album from HDtracks.  I have the SACD which was mastered from analog tape transfer of said master copy.  Now if I choose to convert BACK to PCM the most common lowest bit rate for that kind of file transformation is 24/88.2.  If you have a higher end SACD player the PCM might come out as 24/176.  So my question is what do I have if I convert the sacd to PCM?  An upsampled mess??  I mean the real master is 24/44...so the lowest conversion rate that approaches transparency is actually higher than the original master.  If anyone can help me to make some sense of this please do.  The SACD is clearly the best of all the copies I have and removes all the harshness and offending digititus that plagues even the master.  So again, when you take that SACD to PCM at even the lowest sampling rates you end up with a bigger bucket than the original master.  Please explain.

I hear about extracting DSD files from a SACD ISO image file and
converting to PCM. I also hear about converting PCM files to DSD and
authoring a SACD. Are tools readily available to extract stereo DSD
files from more than one SACD ISO and then re-author a stereo only
SACD ISO image to burn to DVD+R? The idea is to combine two SHM-SACD
ISO images onto one DVD+R with no processing of the audio data.

Thanks in advance.
