One reason could be so you can create your own DVD-A.
Personally I find the discs play better on my universal player than burned SACD-R from ISO.
I only have a cheap player though which may be the reason.
Additionally it means I can read the DVD-A on my PC, which I cannot do on burned SACD-R (even though it was once a DVD-R).
Also you are limited by the size of the DVD-R rather than the existing SACD-R ISO using this method.
Many SACD albums are very short, an example being Love Over Gold which is just under 41 minutes.
Authoring a DVD-A allows you to decide the content to go onto the DVD.
An example being a Beatles 24/44 album compilation in DVD-A format which I have a copy of.
I have previously used Foobar and Saracon to convert from SACD format to PCM and have not found any severe sound degradation arising from the conversion.
Purists may baulk at my departure from DSD but I am quite satisfied with this process on the couple of occasions I have converted to PCM/DVD-A.

Oh didn't want to mean that in a demeaning way if it came across like that. I was just curious as to why one would do that when most of the same stuff is available in some form of PCM that was converted by professional engineers. It would seem if that possibility exists that would be the superior way to go sound quality wise.

Why would you convert SACD to PCM? Almost every SACD out there has a high res PCM equivalent either on HDtracks or some other source. You are taking a file likely an analog PCM tape master and letting it be converted to DSD only to convert it back to PCM. I can see no benefit to doing so. Can someone enlighten me a bit? Here's a good question. I have a 24/44 of norah jones latest album from HDtracks. I have the SACD which was mastered from analog tape transfer of said master copy. Now if I choose to convert BACK to PCM the most common lowest bit rate for that kind of file transformation is 24/88.2. If you have a higher end SACD player the PCM might come out as 24/176. So my question is what do I have if I convert the sacd to PCM? An upsampled mess?? I mean the real master is 24/44...so the lowest conversion rate that approaches transparency is actually higher than the original master. If anyone can help me to make some sense of this please do. The SACD is clearly the best of all the copies I have and removes all the harshness and offending digititus that plagues even the master. So again, when you take that SACD to PCM at even the lowest sampling rates you end up with a bigger bucket than the original master. Please explain.

Never mind, found it on the web
.DST = Direct Stream Transfer
alternately, an embroidery file ;>

Thanks in advance.
