What a difference a few days makes.
After losing its tournament opener in disappointing fashion, Canada rebounded with a command performance Friday night in defeating Nicaragua 5-1 at the CONCACAF U-20 Men's Championship in Puebla, Mexico.
Nicaragua played most of the match a man down against a Canadian side that only needed only draw in order to finish second in its round robin group and thereby advance to the quarter-finals. A loss would have eliminated the Reds.
Caleb Clarke led the way with a pair of goals for Canada, who finished behind Cuba (six points) and ahead of pointless Nicaragua in Group B.
The four semifinalists at this 12-nation CONCACAF competition automatically qualify for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey this June.
Canada meets the United States in the quarter-finals on Feb. 26 for the right to compete at the World Cup. The Americans defeated Costa Rica 1-0 on Friday to finish first place in Group A and set up their knockout round contest with the Canadians.
Canada lost 2-1 to Cuba on Monday, a game that saw the Reds struggle defensively and lacking in midfield creativity. But on Friday, Canada looked like an entirely different team, even before Nicaragua had a man sent off, as it kept its defensive shape, dominated in midfield and attacked with a cutting edge in the final third.
