Montreal Canadiens prospect Blake Geoffrion required surgery on his head Friday night after he was checked in a Hamilton (Ontario) Bulldogs game, the Montreal Gazette reported.
The grandson of Canadiens legend Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion was hit by Jean-Philippe Cote in the American Hockey League and the skate of the Syracuse (N.Y.) Crunch defender might have hit Geoffrion in the head as he hit the ice, the newspaper reported.
Geoffrion, who was bleeding, skated off to the dressing room. Mike Blunden fought Cote after the hit.
"To be honest, I didn't even really see the hit," Blunden told the Canadian Press. "I was yelling, 'Heads up, Boomer!' and then when I saw he got smoked I just went after the guy.
"We're a team and we stick together and Boomer's been a big part of our team. It's unfortunate what happened and hopefully he gets well soon."
Coach Sylvain Lefebvre said after the game that Geoffrion's injury wasn't life-threatening and that Geoffrion's parents were with him at the hospital.
