Kurt Cobain's death left Neil Young deeply scarred after discovering the tragic Nirvana star quoted his idol's lyrics in his suicide note.

In his new autobiography, 'Waging Heavy Peace,' the rocker reveals he was trying to reach Cobain and offer him a some career advice in the days before his death in 1994 - and he was stunned when he learned the details of the tragedy.

The 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' singer wrote Young's line 'It's better to burn out than fade to fade away' from the rocker's hit 'Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)' before shooting himself.

In the book, Young writes, "When he died and left that note, it struck a deep chord inside of me. It f**ked with me.

"I, coincidentally, had been trying to reach him. I wanted to talk to him. Tell him only to play when he felt like it."
