{allcanada} Harper scores twice to lead Otters over Petes

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- Oscar Dansk made 47 saves to lead the Erie Otters to a 5-1 road win over the Peterborough Petes in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday night.

Stephen Harper scored twice to lead Erie, while Jake Evans, Nick Betz and Travis Wood each scored for the Otters (1-2-0).

Trevor Murphy scored the only goal for Peterborough (1-2-0), which outshot Erie 48-30 but couldn't solve Dansk.

Harper's first came on the power play and the second at even strength four minutes apart in the middle of the first period.

Evans connected 35 seconds after Harper's second goal to give Erie a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Otters got the only goal of the second period when Betz buried one with 15 seconds to go in the frame.

Murphy snuck in from the point to tap home a back door pass for Peterborough at the 2:45 mark of the third.

Wood rounded out the scoring, banging a big rebound into the open net in the final minute of the game.

Peterborough went 0-for-8 on the power play, including three two-man advantages.

SAGINAW 5, SUDBURY 0

SAGINAW, Mich. (CP) -- Goaltender Jake Paterson turned aside all 30 shots on Thursday as the Saginaw Spirit blanked the Sudbury Wolves 5-0 for their first win of the Ontario Hockey League season.

Eric Locke scored twice for Saginaw (1-1-1) and Andrey Alexeev and Vincent Trocheck had a goal and an assist to pave the way. Justin Kea also scored and Grant Webermin had a pair of assists.

Joel Vienneau stopped 26 shots for Sudbury (2-1-0).

Trocheck opened the scoring at 13:19 with a goal from the slot with assists going to Webermin and Ringuette.

Saginaw increased their lead to 2-0, scoring the only goal of the second period as Russian import Alexeev scored his first OHL goal from the top of the face-off circle, after receiving a pass from the half wall from Garrett Ross.

The Spirit had three power-play goals in the third period.

Locke scored twice at 3:33 and added the second goal at 17:50, finishing a three-way passing play from Alexeev and Webermin.

Kea scored with Sudbury two men short at 4:43 in between the two Locke goals.

The game featured lots of rough stuff as the two teams combined for 14 minor and two major penalties.

BARRIE 4, OWEN SOUND 3

BARRIE, Ont. (CP) -- Josh MacDonald scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Barrie Colts defeated the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday night.

Winnipeg Jets prospect Mark Scheifele and Zach Hall each had a goal and an assist for Barrie (2-2-0).

MacDonald had the other marker while Steven Beyers chipped in with a pair of assists.

Daniel Catenacci, Daniel Zweep and Zach Nastasiuk replied for the Attack (2-0-1), who lost their first game this season.

Owen Sound had a 3-2 lead late in the third period, but with the goalie pulled, Hall threw the puck on net and scored for Barrie with just 30.3 seconds remaining.

Both teams struck with the man advantage. Barrie went 2-for-9 on the power play while the Attack finished at 1-for-6.

Mathias Niederberger turned aside 21 pucks for the victory.

Owen Sound's Jordan Binnington stopped 36 shots in a losing cause.
