EXTREMADURA, Spain -- Canada's Melanie McQuaid win the women's title at the inaugural ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships on Sunday.
The Victoria native finished in a time of one hour 43 minutes one second.
McQuaid won despite having to use a borrowed bike for the cycling portion of the race. McQuaid bike was lost while travelling to Spain.
Christine Jeffrey of Guelph, Ont., had a 46-second lead after the one-kilometre swim, but McQuaid made her move during the 20-kilometre bike and held her lead through the six-kilometre run.
McQuaid was assessed a 15-second penalty but still finished 23 seconds ahead of Shonny Vanlandingham of the United States.
Emma Garrard of the U.S. was third while Jeffrey finished fourth.
