CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland -- Erik Read of Calgary raced to a sixth-place finish in men's slalom at the FIS world junior ski championships Monday, one of three Canadians to finish in the top 15.

Read overcame a mistake halfway through his first run to finish in a two-run combined time of one minute 31.54 seconds.

"My first run was all right, but the conditions were pretty soft," said Read, the son of former Canadian alpine skier Ken Read. "At about halfway down I caught an edge and slid a little but I stayed up and kept going and I skied the bottom really well.

"The second run was a lot better and the conditions this afternoon were beautiful. I had to deal with the ruts and the snow conditions but fought through it and I skied really well."

Reto Schmidiger won gold in 1:28.54, while his Swiss teammate Justin Murisier was second in 1:30.08. France's Mathias Rolland took the bronze in 1:30.54.

Toronto's Philip Brown was 10th with a two-run combined time of 1:31.92.

Trevor Philp of Calgary was 11th, Dominic Garand of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was 23rd, while Calgary's Cody Pederson was 27th.

Sarah Freeman of Fernie, B.C., was the fastest Canadian in training for Tuesday's women's downhill race, finishing in ninth place.
