KINGSTON, Ont. - Robbie Czarnik scored twice, including the overtime winner, as the Plymouth Whalers toppled the Kingston Frontenacs 6-5 in Ontario Hockey League action Sunday afternoon.
Stefan Noesen had two goals and one assist for Plymouth (3-4-1), while Scott Wedgewood made 32 saves. Tyler Brown and Austin Levi added singles for the Whalers. Czarnik also had two assists.
Alan Quine struck twice for Kingston (3-3-1) and Michael Fine had a goal and two assists. Charles Sarault and Ethan Werek had markers as well. Philipp Grubauer made 35 saves for the Frontenacs.
Czarnik netted the winner with just 16 seconds left to play in overtime.
Kingston applied pressure throughout the first, out-shooting Plymouth 11-5, but it was the Whalers who escaped the opening period with a 2-1 lead after Brown and Noesen tallied.
In the second period, Czarnik, Levi and Noesen scored in a five-minute span, for Plymouth to take a 5-1 lead.
The Frontenacs got their act together late in the period with three goals of their own in a six-minute span. Quine and Werek got things rolling before Fine scored on a 5-on-3 power play.
In the last period, Quine tallied on the power play for his second of the game and to force overtime.
Plymouth was 3-for-7 on the power play while Kingston went 2-for-6.
Taylor Beck had the eventual winner as the Guelph Storm held off the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for a 2-1 victory in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday night.
Carter Sandlak had the other goal for Guelph (4-3-1), while Brandon Foote made 38 saves.
Egor Omelyanenko was the only scorer for Sault Ste. Marie (3-5-0), while Bryce O'Hagan stopped 29 shots.
Beck's score came at the 13:56 mark of the second period. The Greyhounds pelted Foote with 14 shots in the third but they never cracked the goalie.
The Storm were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Greyhounds went 0-for-2.
