TORONTO — The Minnesota Twins homered twice in a seven-run third inning that propelled them to a 7-4 come-from-behind win against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Trevor Larnach launched a three-run home run to right field off Blue Jays starter Eric Lauer (1-2), capping off the inning that helped the Twins erase an early two-run deficit. The win levelled the series at one game apiece.

Beyond the loss, the Blue Jays suffered another blow when designated hitter George Springer exited the game with a left big toe fracture. It was not immediately clear how Springer sustained the injury.

Twins shortstop Brooks Lee opened the third inning with a solo home run to left field. Catcher Ryan Jeffers walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. Josh Bell hit a two-RBI single to centre field to give the Twins the lead before Larnach extended the cushion to five runs with his first home run of the season.

Twins starter Joe Ryan (2-1) held the Blue Jays to two earned runs on two hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and a walk.

The Blue Jays scored all their runs off the long ball. Daulton Varsho hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Blue Jays the early lead. Jesus Sanchez smacked a two-run homer in the ninth inning.

TAKEAWAYS

Blue Jays: Laurer was making his first start since recovering from a flu bug that swept through the Blue Jays’ clubhouse recently. The left-hander cruised for the first two innings before giving up seven runs on five hits and two walks in the bat-around third inning for the Twins. Lauer, however, managed to steady himself enough to pitch into the sixth inning.

Twins: Lee started the rally for the Twins with a solo shot in the third inning. He added a single in the sixth.

KEY MOMENT

Bell’s bloop single dropped in front of Varsho in centre field, scoring two and contributing to the Twins’ eventual seven-run third inning.

KEY STAT

The win improved the Twins’ road record to 3-5.

COMING UP

Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer (1-1, 3.38 earned-run average) is scheduled to start the series finale on Sunday afternoon against Twins right-hander Taj Bradley (2-0, 1.08 ERA).
