Alistair Johnston has suffered another setback in his recovery from a right hamstring injury, Celtic manager Martin O'Neill revealed on Friday.
Johnston, who has been out since October while recovering from hamstring surgery, suffered the setback on his final day of training with the Canadian men's national team during the international break, according to O'Neill.
"[Johnston] went away with the Canadian national side, was doing some running and had a bit of a setback on his final day of training, which was really disconcerting for us," said the Celtic boss.
"We were hoping to have him in a couple of weeks, maybe having played some bounce games. That will just have to be parked and put to the side for the moment. It's a shame."
O'Neill added that Johnston has a "fairly good chance" to play for Celtic before the end of the season in the Scottish Premiership.
Johnston, 27, last appeared for Canada during the CONCACAF Gold Cup last June.
He is among a large list of Canadian national team players currently sidelined with injury.
Alphonso Davies (hamstring), Promise David (hip), Stephen Eustaquio (blood clot), and Moise Bombito (tibia fracture) all did not feature in Jesse Marsch's squad during the international window, in which they drew both Iceland and Tunisia at BMO Field.
In the latest edition of TSN's FanDuel Race for the Roster, Johnston is projected as one of eight locks for Canada's starting XI in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup later this summer.
The Vancouver native has been capped 56 times since making his debut with the senior national team in 2021.
