The Montreal Canadiens will be without defenceman Noah Dobson after he sustained an upper-body injury during the team’s 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.
Dobson will be re-evaluated in two weeks as the NHL playoffs are set to begin on April 18.
The 24-year-old blueliner left Saturday’s game in the second period after taking a slapshot to his left hand from Blue Jackets star defenceman Zach Werenski. He had 12:57 of ice time with a minus-2 rating prior to his exit.
Dobson will likely end his first regular season in Montreal with 12 goals and 47 points in 80 games while averaging 22:29 of ice time with a plus-5 rating.
He sits first in the NHL with 188 blocked shots entering Sunday’s action, just one ahead of Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jake McCabe.
The 26-year-old defenceman was acquired by Montreal in the off-season from the New York Islanders in exchange for forward Emil Heineman and two draft picks.
Montreal then signed him to an eight-year, $76 million contract as a restricted free agent.
Drafted 12th overall by the Islanders in 2018, Dobson has 62 goals and 277 points in 468 career games split between the Islanders and Canadiens.
The Canadiens have recalled defenceman David Reinbacher from the AHL’s Laval Rocket in a corresponding move.
Reinbacher, 21, was drafted fifth overall by the Canadiens in 2023.
The 6-foot-3, right-shot blueliner has five goals and 24 points in 57 AHL games this season and could make his NHL debut on Sunday against the Islanders.
Montreal has a 47-23-10 record this season and is tied for second in the Atlantic Division with the Tampa Bay Lightning. They are also only two points behind the Buffalo Sabres for top spot in the division with two games remaining in the regular season.
The Canadiens wrap up the season on the road against the Islanders on Sunday and the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
