Season series: The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 at Wells Fargo Center on Jan. 19, when defenseman Matt Hunwick scored with 7.5 seconds remaining in the third period. Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer made 31 saves, allowing goals to Matt Read and Shayne Gostisbehere.
Flyers team scope: Goaltender Steve Mason will start for Philadelphia, which is 1-1-1 on its five-game road trip after losing 3-2 in a shootout at the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Michal Neuvirth made 29 saves and allowed two goals on five attempts in the tiebreaker. Philadelphia is 2-6 in shootouts. "Those are important points. We know that," coach Dave Hakstol said. "If we could flip a switch and change it and turn it, we would." Gostisbehere extended his point streak to 14 games, an NHL record for rookie defensemen, with an assist on Michael Raffl's third-period goal.
Maple Leafs team scope: Goaltender Jonathan Bernier will play for the second straight game. Bernier made 16 saves in a 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday. Toronto will be without forward Leo Komarov, who was suspended for three games by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday for a hit to the head of Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh. "The kid is a good player and an honest player. It's unfortunate for us," coach Mike Babcock said of Komarov after practice. "We need Leo on the ice." Komarov leads the Maple Leafs with 18 goals and 35 points. Babcock said he's not sure whether any of his injured players, including forwards Tyler Bozak and Joffrey Lupul, will be able to return. "We're going to know more [Saturday] morning," Babcock said. "We'll see how everyone did today with practice and see the results in the morning, then we'll go from there and know more about our lineup at that time."
