{allcanada} Blue Jays, Donaldson reach two-year deal

Josh Donaldson and the Toronto Blue Jays have avoided arbitration with a two-year contract worth about $29 million, according to TSN's Scott MacArthur and multiple reports.

If the third baseman and the Jays had failed to reach a deal by Feb. 15, the two sides would have had to face an arbitrator for a second consecutive year.

Jon Heyman of the MLB Network reported last month that the reigning American League MVP was asking for $11.8 million for 2016, while the Blue Jays countered with an offer for $11.35 million.

With the new deal, Donaldson is getting a significant raise from last season. He earned $4.3 million in 2015 after losing an arbitration hearing against the Jays a year ago - where the third baseman asked for $5.75 million.

In 2014, Donaldson earned the major league minimum $500,000 with the Oakland Athletics.

The 30-year-old hit .297 with 41 home runs and 123 RBIs in the 2015 season, his first in Toronto. Along with winning the AL MVP, he helped the Blue Jays reach the playoffs for the first time since 1993.
